APBA OFFSHORE – CHAIRMAN’S LETTER TO MEMBERS Ladies and Gentlemen: The last few days have been very difficult. Late Sunday night, the sport, indeed, the world lost a truly wonderful human being in Steve Simon. Anyone who attended his memorial service and heard what his sisters, Lee Kimmel and Rabbi Torob had to say, knows exactly what I am talking about. Reflecting on that tragedy as well as what is truly important in life: family, friends, doing right by others, community, and being the best person you can be while you are here, is where my mind has been most of this week. Loss of a friend or loved one always changes one’s perspective, albeit usually only temporarily. I have spent the last 12 hours reading emails, posts on OSO and talking to people on the telephone. Much of what I have heard and read has been incredibly disappointing, if not downright embarrassing. Not because of the personal attacks on me as I have been the “embattled leader” of APBA Offshore since I made my first difficult and controversial decision 12 hours into my chairmanship. I knew what I was getting into when I took the job and I am as strong and determined as ever. No, the disappointment and embarrassment lies in the damage that is being done to our fans, other racers, our staff and most importantly, the community of Orange Beach, Alabama, by a few very selfish people and their hidden agendas. From a personal standpoint, Steve’s tragic passing has changed my perspective on life, hopefully for more than a fleeting moment. So now I want to share some of that perspective with you.
