Whether you’re the type to maticulously plan out an outfit or just throw on whatever comes to you first, you have a style, and like your handwriting your style is completley unique to you. Regardless of an interest in fashion, from the savvy who pour over the pages of the latest issue of Vogue, to the uninterested who couldn’t care less about designers or their latest collections, we all have our own taste and preference regarding the garments we drape ourselves in.

I find personal style interesting because to me it is a form of expression. There is so much that you can say about yourself with the clothes that you wear, much like the design process there are many factors which contribute to what you are, or aren’t, saying. Depending on your taste you can make a statement, become a wallflower, seduce, offend and inspire or all of the above. You may wake up in a foul mood and subconciously go for the darkest colours in your collection, or wake up on the right side of the bed and opt for a bright floral number. My favourite part about all of this is that every person leaves a unique impression depending on their clothes, two people could walk into a room wearing
the exact same outfit and the way they look and the impact they make can be completley different and as much as the naive people of the world don’t want to believe, we do judge people based on appearance and label them according to societies standards. For example, if you saw a young man with long hair, clad in all black and a t-shirt with ‘Metallica’ plastered on you would never assume that he could be a ‘One Direction’ fan. This assumption is based on his appearance alone.

You could argue that almost every single person who buys clothes is involved with fashion, the depths vary but we are all linked to this top grossing industry in some shape or form. There is a complex and time consuming process that goes into designing the simplest of plain black shirts. With multiple choices to consider; fabric, cost, the cut of the collar, sleeves and waist, the length, buttons, pattern, the list goes on. So this plain black shirt that the guy in the coffee shop is wearing is the finished product of a number of professionals that have spent hours going over the fine details. The inspiration for coffee guy’s shirt would have originated from a piece that strolled down the runway draped on a model at Fashion Week. After it’s original design is toned down for day to day wear it will then be sold on the high street. It may then be sold in clearance stores after being on the market for a season if it was not in high demand, then live out the rest of its life in someone’s wardrobe before either being thrown out or donated to a charity shop. At which point your grandmother may pick it up and you could receive a lovely second hand shirt as a gift.

We can also express our passions and interests through our clothing. You could wear your favourite musician’s merchandise, something by your favourite designer or even something with a pattern that contains your favourite animal. First impressions are vastly important in any aspect of our lives and almost every relationship we make, be it romantic, professional or platonic, they are based on appearance and what you wear makes up a big part of that. For example, two people could spark up a conversation on a communal interest in a musician because one has the musician’s logo on their clothing, you could go for a first date and your partner shows up in pyjamas, which would more than likely deter you, but if they turned up looking presentable with an effort put into their appearance it could make the beginnings of the date more enjoyable, and you would ever turn up to a high profile job interview in a pair of joggers, or maybe some of you would but did you ever hear back? The clothes that we make a conscious decision to wear have an effect on almost every aspect of our lives.
