With a mind full of desire toward the unknown, the traveler determined to sail across the ocean. Following the rhythm of water, sunshine, and the cycle of nature, the traveler experiences through every part of its voyage. The world was never so clear and spacious, but it was also dangerous and mysterious. While approaching the unknown, the traveler figured out that anything could happen, for good or for bad. However, the traveler is alone but not lonely; it goes with the stream but determined in will. The voyage, still full of uncertainty and charm, will always go on, and lead the traveler to somewhere full of hope.

As a traveler and a dreamer, life is like an adventure. It is anything but stability, and the goal is never stop exploring and feeling. And as an illustrator, I transfer my adventure into drawings and express my feeling in the very unique way.
Setting out a voyage is a fine but not the only way to explore new possibilities. Sometimes, it’s even more surprising to see how the result comes out by looking back to where one comes from. It not only enables one to understand self in a deeper way, but also creates new inspiration in an interesting way. Before setting out a voyage, let’s take a look at the past and make new sparkles.

See the Invisible
I figured out that there are three subjects I used to be interested in drawing: travel experience, fruit people, and shape. Out of 10 sketches surrounding with these three subjects, I decided to pick the one that related to shape. The final is a poster with different shapes of objects hiding different animals. By seeing through 3D glasses, the animals behind the objects appear.

The beginning of the voyage is to explore different possibilities. Be open-minded, and try to learn through every part of the experience no matter it is likable or not. Don’t reject the one that seems new and terrifying, but embrace it and take it as a nutrient. There’s nothing such as best, but always better.

Home Sweet Home
The first stop was a peaceful town with nice houses and happy residences. In this stop, few basic bookbinding techniques were taught, and the process is enjoyable. The reaction piece was required to use any of the technique that has been demonstrated in class. As a result, the traveler decided to do something warm, inspired by this sweet environment she had just visited.

Picnic Planet The second stop was definitely a yum yum place built out of yum yum foods, and with meadow perfect for picnic. Paper folding skills were demonstrated in class. By using those skills and combining with one’s imagination, anything could be created for the reaction piece, as long as it is made of paper. After looking at so many delicious foods, the traveler made a lunch box along with paper-folded sandwiches, snacks, and drink, and it’s ready to picnic!

Tukiye
This stop is a fun one! By using the letterpress technique, the traveler had a chance to make her own print. The Turkish culture has always inspired her after she traveled through the amazing country. So in this stop, she printed out the illustration of the interesting Turkish goods she drew.

Furniture Island
Here came the stop of laser-cutting Furniture Island. Everything here is made of wood, and all precisely cut and connected. After learning how to work with the laser-cutting machine, the traveler made a living room, where the chair, table, sofa, and shelf were all designed by herself. If you have time to come and have a cup of tea, it will always be welcome.

Hide and Seek
This is the stop where the traveler witnessed an extremely weird story. She still remembers that there’s a street with shops on one side. A girl with long hair and yellow coat was walking, and then an alligator started to follow behind her. It was an interesting scene. Every time the girl turned back trying to figure out who is following her, she failed because the alligator could always find a place to hide. While the girl thought that the follower finally disappeared, the alligator jumped onto the girl’s umbrella! The girl looked so terrified and helpless! “Oh no, the alligator must plan to swallow the girl!” the traveler guessed. However, the result was just totally opposite. The alligator was turned into the girl’s new purse… and as for it’s by how and by whom, well, the traveler just never figured out!

l e t t e r i n g

In a world full of different cells, everything is too delicate to be believed made by nature. The cell itself is arranged naturally like random patterns. So the traveler took inspiration from the appearance, shape, and regularity of different kinds of cell, and created its own version of the pattern of cell.

Rest for a W h i l e
After traveling to so many stops, the Boat seems to know itself more. It experiences through things it’d never thought it would before, and knows that it can actually do better than expected. Every stop is like a small challenge. Instead of competing with others, it’s more like competing with oneself, to keep improving and defeat the previous. Never stop achieving, but sometimes, take a rest for just a while. In Sketchbook Project, there’s no such thing as regulation. Away from computer, there’s a lot more ways to draw. It’s free and fun; it’s a space to rest.

- 1st Challenge -
Mermaid and Alphabet For the traveler that comes from the other side of the world, the first challenge is a really big challenge. The challenge is to collaborate with an author together to create a double meaning alphabet book. It would be served as a book to teach children alphabets from A to Z, but the meaning of the selected words could also be interpreted as a somehow different way that only the adult can understand. Because most of the selected words are uncommon, so to understand the meaning is one challenge. Secondly, to interpret the meaning of the words into illustration ingeniously and without being too obvious was also another challenge. While the traveler just finished visiting the Sea of Mermaid, she decided to take the colorful and fantastic images of mermaids into this project. As a result, there are all kinds of mermaids appears in this project.

Art Market
For the traveler, the biggest challenge in her first semester of travel is to make 25 things to sell at the Art Market. She had to think of things that she’s willing to make, and at the same time the customers would like to buy. Moreover, the cost of materials and labor is another thing to consider. At the end, she made 13 Laser-cut Notebook Sets, 9 Little Furniture Sets, and some postcards.

For the notebook with the cover of the boat traveling to the Color Pencil Village, the paper inside is also colorful and suitable for drawing with color pencil. For one with the cover of the boat traveling to Fountain Pen Lake, the paper inside is kraft paper that has an antique quality. And for the last notebook with the cover of the boat sailing to Chalk Cave, the paper inside is as black as chalkboard.

Words on Wheels
In this challenge, the traveler was assigned two poems written by young students in Baltimore, and was required to transfer the poems into illustrations. The most challenging part is to interpret the poem in a clever way. The illustration should be related to the poem interestingly, but not showing the words directly. It’s a challenge of understanding and feeling the words, and expressing it through illustration.
Dreams It’s hard to dream When your eyes are wide open, But if you keep them closed, You’ll never see how far you’ll actually go. Then again, maybe I’m just a dreamer And the world was never really my home. And on the outside of my mind Is the only place I belong.
