Strategic Design
Project SGoi was commissioned by Finavia, the company running Helsinki airport. Recently the airport’s international terminal underwent an expansion to accommodate an increase in traffic between Asia and Europe via Helsinki. The aim of this project was to develop service design solutions for the new extension, incorporating the Asian passenger’s point of view. Thus my expertise on the matter became a crucial ingredient in the success of the project, generating and contributing to various improvement concept ideas.
Field Research and Service Development for Asian Passengers in Helsinki-Vantaa Airport
A comparative field study was made to leading European and Asian airports in order to assess what is it exactly that makes Asian airports the best in the world ranking? With such a question in mind, the project SGoi team embarked on a comparative field study, with the ultimate objective of discovering new service design concepts for the new extension of Helsinki airport, and presenting these to Finavia for further implementation. Implementation Many of our final ideas, totaling to 25, have been implemented by
Finavia. Our overall concept was “Experience Finland at Helsinki-Vantaa airport”. That means every passenger, even for those who stay only for connection flights, could feel Finland while inside the terminal. Airport environments are built in an “international way” and passengers rarely
feel or know about the host countries. We successfully created an original
identity for Helsinki airport that culminates Finnish atmosphere. Our concept is currently being pursued, and ideas furthered, by Finavia, with more improvements soon to follow.

Strategic Design for Finnish Company to enter Japanese Market This was a project ordered by a large Finnish paper material company, Stora Enso, who wanted to expand
into Japan. The mission was to use their technology and come up with food package ideas for Japanese
markets. My task was to research the market, summing up the curious philosophy behind Japanese food
packaging, and create ideas for new type of packages or life styles where the company’s materials could be used.

M-office Renovation Project; Increace Workers’ Communication Opportunity The aim of this project was to reform
working styles through changes in office layout. Our task was to get the workers to
communicate more with each other at the office. After going through 4 distinct phases,
Research
In order to map the current work style and its problems, three type of
research was conducted: a questionnaire, an interview and a followup research.
namely research, analysis, planning and evaluation, we accumulated very practical knowledge how to use design as a method to
change people’s behavior and feelings in the work place. The positive impact on increased
communication showed up in the evaluation. By observing others I came to many insights
on designer’s work how to notice and understand the needs and demands of the
users; things that they themselves never even realize.

Where Do You Want to Learn? Idea Development for the New Learning Environment This design research project was initiated for Aalto Executive Education Oy which is an international organization offering executive
education and leadership development. The conceptual design was created based on based on background research, field work such as observations and interviews, feasibility of possible implementation, and consideration of financial benefit for the organization.
The project was lead by me as designer and educators to rethink the traditional classroom and develop new learning environments that are conducive to creativity and innovation.
The proposal included, for example, flexible furnishing, movable walls, dynamic and playful spaces, and layouts and settings that would facilitate the sharing of ideas, and foster creative thoughts and innovation. The final report provided proposal on how such
spaces can be presented in such a way as to make learning exciting, novel, inspiring and creative, thereby improving learning opportunities.

This project was my first job in
Finland after moving there in summer 15
2008. Design Factory, which was the
first building of the newly formed Aalto University, was built with an aim to support interdisciplinary and international cooperation by parties interested in design and development.
My job was to develop the ideas on how the place might be used by
people in successive years. I drew
sketches and made 3D models as draft ideas. Through these materials we
tried to communicate about the ideal environment with as many different professional as possible, while trying to maximize the inter-disciplinary support for the layout.

Bring Greens at Work Environment
This project was conducted with eight other students, working as team
members in a product development project (PDP). The course was targeted at students with engineering, industrial design or marketing backgrounds,
that are interested in product development- or consumer goods. The task,
of developing an office divider which takes into account a need for having
greenery at work place, was commissioned by Martela, a Finnish company specialized in designing and supplying furniture for work environments and public spaces.
The overall concept was “No extra work for office
workers”. In accordance with this philosophy, our ideas ended up not only covering the product but also the service aspects as well, such as how the product’s
homepage should look like or how customers could be
steered to choose amongst them. I was in charge of both marketing the product and organizing the exhibition space for the product in PDP GALA at Design Factory.

Crepeco
This project saw its daylight in a competition
organized by the city of Kyotango, where it was awarded the first prize. The task was to conceive
an original product for Kyotango, a city renowned for its textile technology and quality of fabrics for
used in Kimonos (traditional Japanese garments) as a special local product.

Branding
Use a ´Dead´ Space as an Organization´s Resources The purpose of this project is to rethink the role of space in an organization.
Through a students´ exhibition as an applied example of the creative use of organizational unactive space, I showed how they can use the ´Dead´ space
as an opportunity to present its ideas, its organization image, its culture, and its products.
It was carried out as a collaboration with a module “Managing Innovation
and Change“ in Aalto University, which 60 Master’s program students were taking part in. They presented ways to realize `10
times more impactful leadership´. Summarizing 15 groups of students´ ideas into 4 common
themes, and visualizing those and implementing the window display (15m x 3m) at a company and evaluating the result were my responsibilities.
