FOOD SAFETY - PACKAGING STANDARDS COURSE HEADED TO NSW
T
he AIP recently ran their new Food Safety - Packaging Standards & Regulations Half-Day Training Course in NSW where 15 attendees were made aware of the regulations and standards affecting those in the food industry. The attendees gained knowledge about the various aspects of food safety, the critical situation of food waste and what can be done, through improved packaging awareness in safety, that will go along way in helping the situation. It was encouraging to see that the majority of attendees shared their experiences and frustrations in trying to understand the requirements of the standard and how it affects them. There was plenty of class discussions which was encouraged to foster and enhance the learning aspect of the course content. Attendees were treated to a superb lunch where all the plates were left clean having just learnt about food safety and food waste. In the coming months participants will be challenged in their workplace ensuring that the standards are met and sharing with others how best to achieve this. They also all went away with a supportive contact person with whom they can directly liaise with at Food Standards Australia and New Zealand.

WPO & THE AIP CONTINUES TRAINING IN SINGAPORE
A
s part of the commitment that the World Packaging Organisation ( WPO) has made to education around the globe it continues to educate more people in the science and technology of packaging, thus ensuring better quality of life through better packaging for more people.
This training related to the needs of the Singapore industry involved seven presenters covering topics such as packaging in the supply chain, sustainable packaging, electronic smart packaging, global trends affecting the Singapore packaging industry, social responsibility in packaging and the latest in smart packaging materials.
The AIP, supported by the WPO, recently took education to Singapore by way of an interactive forum with industry leaders; a conference on the future of the packaging industry; and a series of collaborative clusters. As the Education Director for both the AIP and the WPO, Pierre Pienaar FAIP, CPP, coordinated the educational program for Singapore; which was customised to suit the regions needs, as per all of the WPO education programs.
During the collaborative cluster sessions attendees were encouraged to relate their issues that involved the topics presented and in so doing collaboratively find solutions. The 100 odd attendees were encouraged to implement into their respective workplaces aspects learnt during training. A follow up session will be encouraged so as to gather feedback regarding implementation and to start the process again making it a continuous learning experience.
Singapore is vibrant, developed with an advanced industry sector which continues to strive towards establishing and ensuring that they remain at the forefront of technology.
The Packaging Council of Singapore along with the Singapore Manufacturing Federation are to be commended on this collaborative learning approach, seeking a new future within the packaging industry in their region.

AIP PARTNERS WITH UNIVERSITY OF MELBOURNE MASTER DEGREE PROGRAM
he AIP, in collaboration with the University of Melbourne (UoM), recently completed a most interesting, fruitful and encouraging week of focussed packaging technology learning. The Food Packaging Materials and Processes unit forms part of the newly created Master Degree in Food and Packaging Innovation, which was developed by Mondelēz International, UoM and AIP. The week of learning was held at the UoM Faculty of Veterinary and Agricultural Sciences. The FOOD 90031 - Food Packaging Materials and Processes lecturing was led by Pierre Pienaar FAIP, CPP, along with seven experienced presenters from industry, specifically chosen by the AIP, to deliver the industry-based content. Dr Anneline Padayachee, the course leader from UoM, is to be commended on her professional approach and the manner in which she led and interfaced with the AIP lecturing team. The 15 students from all parts of the globe enjoyed this high-level intensive learning, some saying it gave them a completely new understanding and appreciation for packaging. Certainly some found it daunting and one student stated that, ‘It was a week of information overload’, This learning week was structured in such a way that lectures took place from 9.00 am - 5.30 pm each day, with one day being a site visit. A huge thank you must go out to Cryovac, who hosted all the students on factory tours through their Tullamarine and Fawkner manufacturing facilities. The students found the site visits most interesting as none had ever visited a factory of any nature before. A collaborative learning approach resulted in it being a thought provoking experience with many questions being asked at the end of each factory tour. The week ended with an oral exam followed a week later by the first of two assignments. The UoM and AIP have formed a unique constructive partnership between academia and industry for the betterment of our future packaging leaders in the region.

Unlocking the Chain of Custody
July-August 2015
Forest-certified papers are often described as Chain of Custody (CoC) certified papers, a term that’s widely used and plays an important role in the labelling industry. In this Q&A, Dr Carol Lawrence FAIP, environment and sustainability specialist at UPM Raflatac, provides a clear outline of what CoC means to the industry.
H
EIGHTENED consumer awareness
today of social and environmental issues is due partly to successful campaigning on the part of environmental groups, and also to developments in legislation driven by megatrends such as climate change and the desire to prevent the loss of biodiversity. Consequently, a growing number of informed consumers are choosing sustainable consumption, which in turn prompts companies large and small to provide more sustainable offerings. UPM Raflatac is one such company. Forest certified papers from UPM Raflatac are part of the company’s sustainability approach where the sustainable and legal origin of wood fibres can be verified. UPM Raflatac offers more than 700 certified label products today – in 2009 there were none.
WHAT ARE FOREST CERTIFIED PAPERS? Forest certification verifies sustainable and legal logging and that the forests are well-managed. It’s crucial to maintaining and enhancing the goods and services provided by the forest. We need to link sustainable forests to the marketplace, and that link can be provided by forestry certified papers. It’s a certification that plays an important role in ensuring the traceability of wood from its origin through the entire supply chain, and enables companies to provide third party verification of the claims they make to their customers.
WHY ARE FOREST CERTIFICATION SCHEMES IMPORTANT? In response to growing concern over global deforestation, forest certification schemes such as FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) and PEFC (the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification Schemes) aim to prevent illegal and unsustainable practices. Estimates indicate that half the world’s forests have already undergone some transformation, and it is necessary to ensure balance between using the forest as a resource and preventing its destruction.

WHEN CAN FOREST CERTIFIED PAPERS BE USED? Forest certified papers are used in a vast array of applications and the CoC of these papers can be passed along the supply chain if all entities where the paper is converted are certified – timber suppliers, paper manufacturers, printers and brand owners, for example. Only then are companies eligible to use the relevant logos on paper and other forest-derived products in their product marketing to promote responsible material sourcing.
WILL FOREST CERTIFIED PAPERS BECOME COMPULSORY?
more aware and educated about sustainability issues, and as governments introduce tighter legislation to ensure wood-based products are not illegally harvested. Since November 2014 the Australian Government has been conducting routine compliance assessments on businesses that import wood-based products, including paper, in accordance with the provisions of the Department of Agriculture Illegal Logging Prohibition Regulations. Organisations need to show that they have undertaken a due diligence process to minimise the risk of importing illegally logged timber into Australia.
Forest certification is a voluntary process, and this is at the heart of its effectiveness – it is a platform for forest owners, forest industry stakeholders and environmental organisations to come together and find solutions to improve forest management practices.
FROM A BUSINESS PERSPECTIVE, WHAT DIFFERENTIATION CAN FOREST CERTIFIED PAPERS PROVIDE?
HAVE YOU SEEN DEMAND FOR FOREST CERTIFIED PAPER PRODUCTS INCREASING IN THE MARKET?
