WELCOME TO NEW MEMBER

The AIP would like to take this opportunity to welcome our newest Member. Q1. WHY DID YOU JOIN THE AIP? WHAT BENEFITS DO YOU BELIEVE THE AIP OFFERS ALL THEIR MEMBERS? I have had my eye on the AIP for a number of years. I was at an expo in Melbourne the first time I came across the AIP, and most recently at the AUSPACK event in Sydney. As co-owner of a family-run, food manufacturing business, I have felt my graphic design Degree alone has not been enough to help me create new packaging for both our new and existing product range. I have learnt a lot on the job in the last 8 years but I am expectant that joining the AIP will fill in the gaps in my knowledge about the more technical, practical side of packaging, connect me to a wider network of professionals in the industry and keep me in the know on the latest trends. Q2. HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN IN THE INDUSTRY? WHAT ARE YOUR AREAS OF EXPERTISE? I rejoined my father’s business in 2009. As a family business, I have been involved in nearly every facet from making the products, to packaging them ready for delivery. My main area of expertise is the designing of our packaging, everything from the polypropylene bags we use to package our golden bread to our moon cake gift box range. Sasha Truong AAIP Packaging & Design Manager Red Jade Australia

Q3. WHAT IS YOUR CURRENT JOB ROLE AND WHAT ARE YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES? I design all our packaging, labels and graphic materials. I manage our brand and make all the decisions to with the visual communication of our products. I liase with other creative professionals, digital design agencies, food photographers and packaging suppliers from within Australia and overseas.

COFFEE CUP CONUNDRUM

A

round 295 million hot and cold cups are used annually in New Zealand, with more than 90% of coffee cup brands either manufactured or sold by The Packaging Forum members, the organisation has been told from findings of a detailed survey. The industry has seen a significant growth in the volume of compostable cups and, with this, confusion as to whether, where and how they can be composted, Forum manager Lyn Mayes says. “We commissioned Beyond the Bin to assess the range of cups on the market; survey composters about whether they can process compostable cups; identify the barriers and make recommendations as to how these can be resolved. Based on the information supplied by our members, the compostable coffee cups in the New Zealand market have similar specifications and are typically certified to the EN13432 (commercial compost European standard),” she says.

A total of 27 composting facilities around New Zealand process compostable food packaging including compostable coffee cups, with 11 agreeing to be listed as accepting compostable food packaging. Seven facilities are piloting processing systems or developing the capability to accept compostable cups and other compostable packaging waste. Coverage varies with North Island facilities identified in Auckland, Waikato, Bay of Plenty, New Plymouth, Hawkes Bay and Wellington, and South Island facilities in Tasman and Kaikoura. Beyond the Bin director Kim Renshaw says the composting industry has some will and/or capacity to process food packaging, including coffee cups and in most cases, their C-PLA lids. “The barriers they face to process compostable food packaging in their existing operations are varied and significant. Contamination, lack of identification, length of processing time, volume vs weight and organic input restrictions affect a composter’s will and capacity. The Packaging Forum members can help solve these issues by creating an identification and standard for cups and innovating product design to reduce the length of processing time.” Mayes says the Forum has already initiated a change to its funding criteria for events this year, requiring applicants to provide evidence they will separate packaging waste either during the event or through post-event sortation. “Our members are working with community composting service providers such as Home Grown Waiheke Trust to provide local solutions and we see an opportunity to support standalone compost units as an option for small-scale local solutions. Work is underway to develop an agreed identification system for coffee cups which will clearly identify them as compostable or recyclable where facilities exist and a process for its use.” TO ACCESS THE FULL REPORT PLEASE CLICK HERE

AIP PROVIDES TWO WEEKS INTENSIVE LECTURING FOR MASTER OF FOOD & PACKAGING COURSE

A

s the course lecturers for both the Food Packaging Materials and Processes Unit and Food Packaging Design Unit of the Master of Food & Packaging Course at the Melbourne University, the AIP and their expert lecturers, led by Pierre Pienaar FAIP, CPP and Michael Grima MAIP, recently spent two intensive weeks with the latest intake of students in Melbourne.

37 students in all participated in the 2017 intake of the course with close to twenty industry experts providing the course content. The AIP is responsible for the course content delivery for both units and all of the course lecturers are hand-selected for their expertise by the Institute. The students were from Australia, China, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan and Thailand. Such wonderful diversity added another inspiring aspect to the intensive lecturing and learning experience.

FOOD PACKAGING MATERIALS AND PROCESSES UNIT by Prof Pierre Pienaar, FAIP, CPP, AIP Education Director

What a fantastic educational week the AIP had with the 37 students on this course! Such wonderful diversity added another inspiring aspect to the intensive lecturing and learning experience. The week was very intensive with several of the experienced AIP lecturers from industry covering a significant range of packaging technology topics. By the end of lectures each late afternoon, the students had their heads full of information which they had to digest each evening while also preparing for their poster assignment to be presented alongside their oral exam on the last day of the intensive week. The poster assignment, which formed part of their major written assignment, was based on how convenience drives food packaging innovation; as well as how environmental sustainability drives innovation in food packaging. These are really thought provoking assignments which challenged the students to contemplate what packaging is and what its impact is on society. Midweek, the students were kindly hosted by Sealed Air manufacturing facility in Tullamarine where they were able to learn and see right up close how rigid plastic containers are produced. This firsthand experience they found most enlightening. After presentations by Sealed Air, a factory tour and wonderful tasty lunch, they were off to the Sealed Air manufacturing facility in Faulkner. Here they enjoyed another factory tour but this time to see the manufacturing of flexible packaging.

AIP PROVIDES TWO WEEKS INTENSIVE LECTURING FOR MASTER OF FOOD & PACKAGING COURSE This certainly assisted the students to process the theory they had learnt. Thursday saw the students back in the lecture theatre but with a fresh mind about packaging from their previous, practical day in the factories. The involvement and questioning during lectures by the students was most encouraging to all the lecturers. Students researched their selected topics well and lecturers spent late afternoons and early evenings still answering eager questions from the students. As one student said, There is so much to remember and consider in packaging. Another said, I use packaging everyday but never thought about all that went into creating a pack. Friday saw some sleepy students that had been up in the early hours to complete their posters. The oral exam for the students was a presentation of their respective poster plus a 3-minute explanation of what they were trying to achieve by way of the poster. The two course co-ordinators then questioned them. The standard was reasonably good with some real standout students getting their message across very well. The final part of the intensive for students is a written 1000 word essay on a given topic relating to the subject. Here the students’ needs to get the message across, meet the criteria, apply the knowledge learnt both theoretically and practically, all within 1000 words.

AIP PROVIDES TWO WEEKS INTENSIVE LECTURING FOR MASTER OF FOOD & PACKAGING COURSE

FOOD PACKAGING DESIGN UNIT by Michael Grima MAIP

This year was the second delivery of the Food Packaging Design subject (Design stream). The Design stream is presented, as an elective, whereas Pierre’s unit focuses on packaging materials and processes as a mandatory core subject. The elective nature of the unit left the inaugural year in 2016 numbering only 5 students – an initial challenge to maintain commitment from the lecturers to return for 2017. Thankfully both the passion and desire by the hand-picked lecturing group, coupled with a shift in the course being made open to both 1st and 2nd year students, increased attendance to an excellent result of 32 this year. The AIP’s original vision for the Design Stream, first presented ~3 years ago to the University and Industry Advisory Group (IAG), was built on 3 key goals: 1. To provide students an overview of taking an ‘idea through to market’ with a consumer and design led focus within a FMCG company. 2. All lecturers selected were required to be commercially active in the industry and masters in their respective fields. 3. Have the ability to deliver lecture material beyond the standard theoretical Masters format and be interactive and workshop based. The over arching ethos was to: “Keep the students engaged in real world application, delivered in a boot camp format and guerrilla style, with a strong focus on designing to the consumers needs and culture.” The selection of lecturers, was grouped to deliver this ethos in 3 key areas of pipeline development present in FMCG brand owner’s business models: Insights, Design & Development and Execution. Our lecturer material proved an inspiration to many of the students with titles such as ‘Gathering consumer insights’, ‘Creating breakthrough ideas’, ‘Exporting premium products to Asia’, ‘Brand identity’, ‘Packaging Law: Unravelled & Unwrapped’; ‘Accessibility Design - Ease of use’ and ‘Private label Packaging’. All of these speciality lectures were supported by foundation design techniques in Glass, Cardboard and Plastic mediums as well as NPD implementation and Prototyping. Although many of these subjects are not core to the traditional packaging technologist toolkit, they form an important arsenal in ensuring packaging design has an enduring, valuable impact to our expanding Asian export market and is empathetic of the consumers functional needs and emotional desires. The highlights for many of the students were the team workshops and practical exercises conducted through the full week.

THE NEXT PRESIDENT OF THE WORLD PACKAGING ORGANISATION (WPO) This type of partnership relies on transparency to ensure consistency throughout from supplier to user to consumer. We know that maximum productivity and enhanced product customisation in a mass production environment are central goals of Industry 4.0. In many ways, the highly innovative packaging industry already operates according to these principles. Some filling and packaging lines already are producing products with personalised labelling and customised containers. Q: How does design thinking facilitate better packaging?

P

ierre Pienaar, Education Director of the Australian Institute of Packaging and vice president – education for the WPO, has been elected as the next president of the World Packaging Organisation (WPO). Pienaar will take office in January 2018 when current president Tom Schneider’s term ends. WhatPackaging? spoke to Pienaar shortly after the announcement... Q: Congratulations Mr Pienaar. After you take office from January, what will be your role and goal at wpo as a president? A: One of the main targets is to encourage and develop of education in some or other form of packaging. WPO understands that education can change the world and the packaging industry in a more positive way. Together with education, we will work in other areas like reduction of food water, reduction in poverty, improved lifestyle for millions, greater interest from countries to participate in this revolution, improved global participation in finding solutions and improved WPO global image. One focus with different sets of wings attached to it should lead to that main focus taking flight and lifting all the attachments with it. Q: One of the themes at interpack was packaging 4.0. How do you explain what is packaging 4.0? A: Looking at the future in a good connected factory environment, Industry 4.0 encompasses automation, communication and manufacturing technologies, which in essence is putting all in place for a new industrial revolution. We will require good networking and integration between companies.

AIP NEWSLETTER AUGUST 2017

A: Design of good packaging is the backbone to success in packaging technology. Success in all spheres, from product/pack acceptability at convertor stage, to user then to consumer, as well as all that lies in between, i.e. supply and logistics. Having just completed three years as WPO vice president of education and lecturing all around the world, I have seen and experienced all sorts of packaging from highly sophisticated packaging to simple food wrapped in banana leaves. But one aspect that remains in the forefront of my mind, and which I remind my students of, is: ‘design with the end in mind’. As an example, in design there are scientific methods which are well known by most of us since our education is based on science and its methods. But what about design-specific knowledge? Design thinking embodies methods and activities that a person applies during the process of solving a practical problem under technological and economic constraints. It is an iterative process that facilitates innovation by a succession of approximations in which building prototypes for testing is at the core. This approach is typically what is taught only to engineering and packaging students but many more could benefit from it. Q: What are the developments on the material science front that are relevant for the packaging industry? We continue our efforts in light weighting, looking at better ways of using what we have, more efficient ways of manufacturing packaging, changing designs that deliver more economical packaging at good pricing. A: But I believe we need to discover a material that gives us the required barrier property that can also be recyclable and/or biodegradable. We need to leave this planet in a good shape for our grandchildren and their children. I believe we may have the answer in nanotechnology. Fortunately, there is a substantial amount of research work being done in this technology.

THE NEXT PRESIDENT OF THE WORLD PACKAGING ORGANISATION (WPO) Q What are your views on the Indian packaging market? A: I think India has such a vibrant packaging community, where all those involved in packaging innovation are trying to do their best, but in many cases it is driven by the consumer in wanting more for less. This places a huge strain on developing packaging that can offer extended shelf life at the expense of recyclability. Currently only laminate structures can offer that requirement of shelf life extension. India is a huge market with innovative people trying to find the ultimate pack. In recent years I have found good examples of new packaging ideas coming out of India and not only in materials but in the equipment side of the packaging industry as well. I would not be surprised if someone into the future India finds the nanotechnology solution to our packaging woes. Q: How do you look at the packaging education in India vis-a-vis that in the USA and for that matter education in emerging economies? What are the shortcomings? A: This is a great question that needs some discussion. I have been involved in packaging education for the past 30 years. I am so pleased to see so many people in India wanting to become more educated in packaging. This is fantastic to witness. I have visited India a number of times and each time I am encouraged by the enthusiasm of the Indian people in them knowing that education will take them further in the development of their careers. Because of sheer numbers, India has many folks needing education and, at the same time, I am blown away when I hear of how many have post graduation degrees in packaging. There is room for so much more development and India knows this and is doing something about it. In my travels around the world where I meet Indian folk, they can certainly hold their own against anyone from any other country when it comes to packaging technology and its development opportunities. Q: Can packaging solve world hunger problem? A: Currently, somewhere between 30% and 35% of global food is wasted or lost. We have been told, from various sectors, that if we could achieve zero food wastage then no person on the planet would need to go hungry.

In many instances poor or sometimes incorrect packaging is the culprit. I believe, we in the packaging industry, can go a long way in helping less food to be wasted to ensure that less people will have to starve. In instances there is food being packed in incorrect material, in other cases the material could have been enhanced to extend the shelf life of the product. WPO has recently supported Messe Düsseldorf in their participation in the Save Food Initiative, at Interpack 2017. This is a joint initiative of the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO), the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), Messe Düsseldorf and Interpack, the leading global trade fair for packaging and processes. Q: Where do you think is packaging industry headed on these three fronts: food wastage; sustainability (recycling or biodegradable) and scope for downgauging? A: There is a constant drive by the packaging industry to improve packaging, to extend shelf life and thus help reduce food wastage. Packaging will not be able to eliminate food wastage in total but we can go a long way in assisting the reduction of food wastage. The aim is to ultimately produce a commercially acceptable material that can extend shelf life but also able to be recyclable and/or biodegradable. I think a possible key to the success could lie in nanotechnology. Q: What impressed you at interpack? A: There were many technology developments impacting packaging design, enabling the packaging designer to produce improved and more meaningful pack formats. Then there were new coding technologies invisibly embedded in on-pack graphics and activated by a smartphone app that could create new pathways for consumer engagement. I was also impressed with the advanced ink technology used in digital printing to create a more personalised experience for the consumer. And a world’s first to manufacturer a new speciality paper with a mineral oil barrier integrated directly in the paper, as well as including heat sealing properties. Lastly, there were various ideas to reduce food wastage, be that in material, design and equipment. Permission by Printweek India www.printweek.in
