FINESSING FOOD PACKAGING In the 2022 Food Packaging Design of the Year category, judges awarded two high commendations, one to Auspouch for its Frutmac Zippmatic 100% Paperboard Foodtainer, and one to Nestlé Australia for the Nestlé Easter Egg packaging range. A bronze award went to Huhtamaki Australia for its Maggi Recipe Base Mono-PP Sachet; while a silver award went to Opal for its Cadbury Roses limited edition Mother’s Day chocolate box. Caps & Closures topped the category, taking home the gold award for the ThermoShield Temperature Monitoring System for Food. ThermoShield packaging safeguards cool and cold chain products by monitoring temperature through the entire process, using thermochromic

materials designed to change colour when the temperature of a product changes. Th is is usef u l i n transport and warehousing because the ‘over temperature’ stock can be clearly seen. Traceability of any product is enhanced when temperature excursions are detected, and the level of resolution can be macro (container temperature), down to discrete (the individual product) packaging. As a smart packaging application, ThermoShield products ensure there is no overheating of perishable food and temperature-sensitive items in transit and in storage; which is a major cause of food spoilage, loss and waste. Using the locking function available, a record of overheating is permanent and will be identified after a long road or sea shipment. Stock can easily be sorted to remove damaged product prior to warehousing or stocking shelves.

BOTTLED TO SWAP Closely allied to food, the beverage category is another seeing innovation on multiple fronts. The Beverage Packaging Design of the Year award saw a high commendation go to Pact Group for the Norco

New Zealand company Synlait Milk took out the gold award for the Synlait Swappa Bottle, designed with clean lines and a retro style with broad shoulders and a large easy pour mouth featuring an embossed Synlait brand logo and ergonomic finger holds allowing optimal hand placement. The Swappa Bottle is sealed with a recyclable closure and the material of choice is food grade stainless steel, selected for its durability, cleanability and its ability to provide product protection ensuring the milk remains fresh, offering an extended shelf-life. The bottle’s physical dimensions allow it to fit refrigerator doors with finger holds positioned for ease of reach. The footprint suits industry

standardised milk crates, supply chain and manufacturing assets. Adding a smart packaging dimension, each bottle has a unique bottle identifier using a laser etched QR code protected within a recessed base. Integrated QR code functionality allows consumers to scan the code to be directed to the ‘swappabottle’ website. It tracks the bottle’s journey and displays live information on the specific bottle – where it was filled, best before date, how many times the bottle has been reused and, most importantly, how many single-use plastic bottles it has offset.

ELEGANT CRAFT In the Health, Beauty & Wellness Packaging Design category, a high commendation was awarded to Woolworths Group for its Macro Laundry Powder packaging; a bronze award went to Zipform Packaging for its Swisse Earth pack; and a silver was scooped by Ego Pharmaceuticals for its etch&ethos skin care packaging. Walking off with the gold was Production Packaging Innovations, for DSmile Box, the packaging for Australia’s first subscription based, at-home professional daily dental health kit. Intelligently designed and beautifully crafted, Dsmile’s three-step formula offers a new approach to everyday dental care. The packaging has been designed as three layers of sturdy corrugated board inserts, with thoughtful interior

folds (Corrugami) used to ensure no movement within the kit and the products arrive intact. The middle layer of the insert with productshaped cavities keeps the products in place, presenting them at one level, and maintaining a neat and tidy appearance to the eye as the customer opens the package. The middle insert keeps the products completely still in the pack during transportation, and the third insert is a layer pad with a cavity that accommodates the tray. The top and middle inserts have the D shape holes at the bottom which direct the user to lift each layer. The visual simplicity, premium look, and natural feeling of kraft (unbleached corrugated E-flute board) matched with black imprint provides a recyclable, sustainable, simple yet elegant design.

BOUQUET BOX Two high commendat ions were awarded in the Domestic & Household Packaging Design category, to Nestlé Purina Australia for Nestlé Purina Total Care (Pet Accessories) and Close the Loop Group for the Koh

Packsize was awarded a bronze for Packsize Australia and Kaboodle, while Earthwise Group received silver recognition for the Earthwise Eco Laundry Scoop Innovation. Triumphing with the gold award, and its second win, was Production Packaging Innovations for the Fig & Bloom Floral Shipper Box designed to house luxury bouquets. The bespoke, monochromatic shipper box is 100 per cent FSC-certified, made from B-flute corrugated board with white top Kraft liner, which is fully recyclable and made from a renewable resource and composed of 60 per cent recycled material. The design provides a moisture-resistant solution, allows adequate air to flow. Structurally, the design includes an additional internal fold-over flap and an insert that is easily locked. HOLOGRAPHIC BRANDING In the Labelling & Decoration Design category, which recognises the addition of content to a pack that creates a unique or innovative appearance, function or communication, a bronze award went to Result Group for its Hungry Jack’s Uno Promotion, and a silver to Billson’s for the Billson’s Christmas Gin label. Caps & Closures took out the gold for its ID-Shield Anti-Counterfeit System, designed to address the challenges Australian product manufacturers and exporters face from lookalike and counterfeit product in their markets. Creating a unique and innovative holographic branding system, ID-Shield is effective in anti-counterfeiting and brand communication. The technology is fully integrated, created in-mould as the product is manufactured, with no added materials, adhesives, inks or printing processes. The functionality of the design boosts product appeal, strengthens consumer confidence in the genuine product, and conveniently works in conjunction with all other tamperevidence devices found in modern packaging. The approach to image creation using ID-Shield means that there is now much greater freedom in a client’s choice of colours, graphics, visual effects, security measures, image position, size and shape to deliver a consumer-captivating demonstration of originality and creativity, adding value to the brand.

MISCELLANEOUS IN THE MIX The Outside of the Box Design of the Year Award has been established for miscellaneous packs and materials not included in any other category.

The judges awarded a high commendation to Close the Loop Group for Lousy Ink; a bronze award to Production Packaging Innovations for the Peter Jackson Garment Box; and two silvers – one to Result Group for its ATGA Table Grapes Project and one to Opal Group, for the Cadbury Roses limited edition Mother’s Day chocolate box. Opal went on to take the gold for the JBS & Opal Dunnage Solution, a column-like corrugated structure to limit product movement during container transportation of meat exports. The cardboard dunnage can be assembled at JBS in less than 30 seconds from a flat sheet. Chilled meat products are typically vacuum-sealed and placed in boxes that are stacked in export shipping containers. Without the necessary dunnage support, these boxes frequently moved in the containers during transportation and lead to product spoilage and food waste, which is costly for meat and food processors.

ABOVE: Gold winner, Accessible & Inclusive Packaging Design category: Glaxosmithkline Consumer Healthcare Australia’s closure for Voltaren Osteo Gel 12 Hourly. BELOW: Brownes Dairy won two gold awards for ‘Australia’s Most Sustainable Milk Cartons’ in the Marketing Design category and in the Sustainability – Renewables category.

| July – August 2022

Many of the current solutions in the market are designed to limit box movement but are constructed from expanded polystyrene (EPS) material, which is not ideal from a sustainability and recyclability perspective at point of destination. Therefore, Opal’s corrugated cardboard dunnage offers a direct replacement for the non-recyclable EPS version that JBS’s export customers can easily recycle with the rest of their used cardboard packaging. More specifically, the dunnage solution is made using corrugated cardboard that consists of 64 per cent Kraft paper and 36 per cent recycled cardboard content and is fully recyclable.

MAXIMISE MESSAGING The Marketing Design of the Year Award recognises designs that deliver eye-catching aesthetics to create emotional stimuli that ensures a brand is purchased. In t his categor y, bronze was awarded to Ego Pharmaceuticals, for its etch&ethos packaging, and a silver to Result Group for the Hungry Jack’s Uno Promotion packagingbased campaign. Brownes Dairy was crowned with gold for its marketing prowess in the positioning of Australia’s Most Sustainable Milk Cartons (Brownes Dairy). With consumers becoming ever more conscious about their impact of the environment, the Brownes Dairy 1 Litre milk in Tetra Rex Plant-Based Craft cartons. With Australian consumers concerned about sustainability and believing that brands should be most responsible for the impact on the environment, this carton and design will drive standout against the competitive set and allow consumers the opportunity to support more sustainable packaging solutions as well as the reforestation initiatives via the Trillion Trees partnership. The packaging also draws significant attention to both the sustainability credentials of the cartons, but also to the great partnership Brownes Dairy has

established with Trillion Trees, that supports the reforestration of used farmland across Western Australia. The community-based organisation has been active since 1979 in Western Australia and has planted more than 15 million trees.

ACCESSIBLE & INCLUSIVE The Accessible & Inclusive Packaging Design Special Award is designed to recognise packaging that is accessible, intuitive, easy-to-open and innovative. Bronze was awarded to Nestlé Purina Australia for its packaging of Nestlé Purina Total Care (Pet Accessories), while silver went to Caps & Closures for its EzyGrip Cap. Osteo Gel 12 Hourly, which passed Arthritis Australia’s consumer testing to be certified Easy to Open. The tamper evidence and cap can be opened in one simple action and can use larger motor movements like the palm of your hand or edge of a desk to complete the action. The flip top has a high coefficient of friction covering on the outer lid lip to facilitate the application of an upward force during opening of the lid. It has been designed with low opening force to open and close the cap, which arthritis consumers found easy to achieve during testing, and liked the audible feedback ‘click’ when the product is closed correctly. There are no opening instructions needed due to the intuitive design, with the opening point highlighted

SAVE FOOD FIRST The Save Food Packaging Design of the Year award is designed to recognise companies that are working to minimise or prevent food waste from paddock to plate – using innovative and intuitive design features that can contain and protect, preserve and extend shelf life – all the while meeting global sustainable packaging targets. GS1 Australia and Woolworths won silver in this category for 2DBarcodes by GS1, and there were two gold winners. In its third gold win of the day, Caps & Closures triumphed for the ThermoShield Temperature Monitoring System (see page 18), which also won in the food packaging category. Sealed Air NZ also took home gold, for the packaging for Inghams Waitoa Free Range Butterflied Chicken, a premarinated format that enables an easy open and easy cooking experience and that is an easy way to mitigate waste in households. Apart from cooking and storage instructions, and a best-before date, on-pack information includes a scannable QR code offers consumers each access to the Waitoa website for meal inspiration ideas. Nylon can be a nuisance for recycling streams, so a high polyethylene equivalent bag of equal gauge (65 micron) was designed to overcome recycling challenges without compromising abuse resistance and protection. The Cryovac solution incorporates 80 per cent recycled materials in this food-contact packaging application. TOP: Gold winner, Save Food Packaging Design category: Sealed Air NZ’s packaging for Inghams Waitoa Free Range Butterflied Chicken. ABOVE: Gold winner, Reuse/ Refill: Close the Loop Group’s Koh Kerbside Recyclable Spout Pouch Refill Pack.

Gold in the Reuse/Refill subcategory went to Close the Loop Group for its Koh Kerbside Recyclable Spout Pouch Refill Pack, made from 100 per cent mono-polymer PE and is Roll ‘n’ Recycle’s first ever kerbside recyclable spout pouch. The pouch can be rolled in a three-dimensional shape with a label attached to help keep the rolled tube form. The previous Roll ‘n’ Recycle concept had a semi-attached label with specifications which included sizing limitations. The new packaging sees t he label redesigned to incorporate a complete detachment from the pouch and the ability to fully roll into the tube shape. This allows for greater stability and reduces the level of stress on the label. As Koh is predominantly an e-commerce brand, the Spout Pouch packaging is lightweight. The refill pack provides a customer with five refills in one pouch for their rigid spray bottle that they can keep at home. The refill pouch provided weights 30g and can hold the same amount of volume as five 114g rigid containers.

RECYCLE/RECOVER Two silver awards were given in the Recycle/Recover category, one to Detmold Group for the Detpak RecycleMe Noodle Cup, the other to Huhtamaki Australia for the Maggi Recipe Base/ Mono-PP sachet. There were also two gold winners in this category. The first is MaCher Australia for the Royal Australian Mint Coin Packaging. This is the first-time moulded fibre has been used to create high-end, premium, collectable packaging – a packaging category that is usually dominated by a heavy use of mixed

materials, including lacquered timber, leather covered boxes and plastic components. To promote and educate the customer on the new packaging format an educational leaflet, ‘Thank you for your purchase’, was included in the pack communicating the Mint’s focus on sustainability and highlighting the environmental benefits of the new packaging. The redesigned box is made from a single material – moulded plant fibre (blend of bamboo and bagasse) – and includes one print finish for the foil logo stamped on the outer and internal lid. A significant advancement in the packaging is that the pulp box design has a weight of 49 grams compared to the previous packaging weight of 148 grams. This box is designed to be reusable, for the on-going storage of high value, collectible coins. The product is a world-first for the industry and was launched ahead of World Environment Day. The packaging design will be rolled out across The Royal Au s t r a l i a n M i nt ’s St a nd a r d P r o of nu m i s m at ic product range. The second Gold winner is Nestlé Australia for the Smarties Range Paperisation. Smarties is the first global confectionery brand to switch from plastic bag and blocks formats to paper packaging that is recyclable. The materials were selected based on their acceptability in the Australian recycling infrastructure. The use of water dispersible coating allows for separation of non-fibre materials with the fibre backing, allowing recycling in the paper recycling centres. The paper material selection took into consideration product shelf life, manufacturing and supply chain efficiencies; with the aim of matching

50

the existing plastic packaging. The Smarties product range, which is considered sensitive, has been packed in paper packaging coated with a high moisture barrier, while still maintaining water dispersible qualities. The maximum reduction in packaging weight has been achieved by reducing headspace where possible. Claims on front of pack illustrate to the consumers that the pack has now transitioned to paper packaging. paper material, the claims ‘I’m Paper’ speaks to the consumer. The front of pack also has a call to action to the consumers to ‘Recycle Me’, indicating that the paper material is recyclable. The call-out to ‘Be Smart’ is a play on words on the Smarties brand which is an effective method to further engage consumers on the sustainability message. The Australasian Recycling Label (ARL) is included on all packs to raise consumer awareness on how to recycle the packs. The transition out of plastic packaging removes 20 tonnes of virgin plastic use annually in Oceania. This change has resulted in removal of approximately 250 million plastic packs sold globally every year. continued overleaf ❯

RENEWABLE In the subcategory Renewables, Brownes Dairy won another gold for ‘Australia’s Most Sustainable Milk Cartons’. The eye-catching packaging is a natural brown colour, converted f rom f ully renewable materials and made with renewable energy. The recent move to Tetra Rex Craft Plant Based drove a further weight reduction of just under four per cent, taking further packaging out of the supply chain. Less packaging material is required to protect the same amount of milk, further enhancing the sustainability credentials of the carton. Brownes Dairy has incorporated the Australasian Recycling Label (ARL) into the pack design. The on-pack artwork provides clear information about its renewable source to aid consumer understanding and awareness of these unique cartons. This education is further amplified through the School Tours programme, which sees 10,000 primary aged school children come through Brownes Dairy’s doors each year (read more on page 20).

COMPOSTABLE BioPak reigned supreme in the Compostable sub-category, where it picked up a silver for its FSC Paper Spoon Straws, and two gold awards. The first gold was for Sugarcane Pulp Hot & Cold Cup Lids, created to match and fit the BioPak eco-friendly hot and cold paper cups already available.

The innovation ensures the lids hold onto cups firmly with a distinctive snap feel when applied to cups. The lids are certified home and industrially compostable to Australian standards (AS4738/AS5810) and made from plant-based, renewable resources and are PFAS free. The second gold was presented for the BioPak FSC Rectangle Paper Containers (BioPak). The new FSC certified rectangular paper containers have been designed to replace the plastic take-away container. They are PLA bioplastic lined to allow them to carry hot, greasy foods without spoiling or breaking. The PLA bioplastic lining is made from rapidly renewable materials. The footprint of these renewable materials is smaller than that of traditional plastics derived from fossil resources – Ingeo bioplastic for instance, has a footprint up to 80 per cent lower. An average cafe using these containers will be able to avoid 455 kg of plastic a year using these alternative BioPak FSC paper containers and lids. Industrially compostable to Australian A S 4736 s t a nd a r d s they are independently tested and verified to completely biodegrade within 120 days in a commercial compost facility, the end product is a non-toxic, nutrientrich compost.

BELOW: Gold winner, Recycled Content category: Ego Pharmaceuticals’ etch&ethos bottles. RIGHT: Gold winner, Closed Loop Collection category: Nestlé Australia’s KitKat recycled content wrapper.

Amcor flexibles Australia took home silver in the Industrial subcategory for its Amcor Ecotite R solution, while the gold went to Opal for the Opal & JBS Dunnage Solution (see page 20). The corrugated cardboard dunnage is made from 64 per cent PEFC-certified Kraft paper and 36 per cent FSC certified recycled paper, and offers a direct replacement for the non-recyclable EPS version. The Opal Dunnage Solution offers greater supply chain efficiencies for both transportation and storage. While EPS dunnage can enable 200 boxes packed per pallet, the JBS and Opal dunnage allows for 1800 per pallet. The ability to store more boxes per pallet results in less trucks on the road, resulting in lower carbon emissions.

RECYCLED CONTENT In the Recycled Content Category, a high commendation went to Pact Group for the Goodman Fielder Meadow Fresh Milk 30 per cent rHDPE Bottle, while Goodman Fielder picked up a bronze for its Praise 100 per cent rPET Bottles. Silver went to Sealed Air for Bubble Wrap 50 per cent recycled content air pillows. Ego Pharmaceuticals won gold for the new etch&ethos bottles, designed from FDA Certified 50 per cent recycled food grade HDPE and offering features for accessibility, reusability, recoverability and recyclability. The 1kg HDPE bottle is designed to refill smaller bottles, and both cap and bottle can be kerbside-recycled in Australia. The smaller 300g bottle with its pump is recyclable without the pump. Both carry the ARL. The bottle is being marketed as an at ‘home pack’ that can be refilled and should be reused multiple times at home by refilling from the larger 1kg pack. Customers can also just purchase the 1kg pack and refill their own home dispenser pack. Both bottles have QR codes that take the customer to the etch&ethos

website if they would like to reorder through Ego directly for the larger 1 kg packs. The 1Kg bottle also has a label made from non-fossil fuel PE from UPM Raflatac and the ISCC certified plastic film is produced by using sustainable resources to replace an equivalent amount of fossil resources in the production process (mass balance approach). This is the first use of this label in Australia and New Zealand.

CLOSED LOOP COLLECTION The Nespresso Curby Coffee Capsule Collection Program took out silver in this subcategory with gold going to Nestlé Australia for the KitKat prototype recycled content wrapper. The 30 per cent recycled content KitKat prototype wrapper is an Australian first, created to demonstrate

the potential for advanced recycling in Australia using Australian post-consumer soft plastics. The prototype wrapper was created by a coalition of companies in the Australian value chain who brought their individual expertise together to process collected waste soft plastic, convert it to oil, and produce Australia’s first soft plastic food wrapper made with recycled content. The coalition with a shared vision includes: 1. REDcycle and CurbCycle, who collected households’ soft plastic waste, some from REDcycle in-store bins and some from the kerbside collection trial (conducted by Nestlé, iQRenew and Curbcycle on the NSW central coast). 2. iQ Renew sorted the collected soft plastics and created a

processed engineered feedstock. 3. Licella converted the plastic to oil using their Australian-developed C a t-H T R adv a n c e d recycling technology. 4. Viva Energy Australia refined the synthetic oil. 5. LyondellBasell made food grade polypropylene. 6. Taghleef Industries created a metalised film. 7. Amcor printed and created the wrapper and finally, 8. Nestlé wrapped the KitKat – keeping it fresh and safe to eat. The KitKat prototype wrapper program has showcased what is possible collaboratively and has been supported by a call to arms to industry to get involved and on-going advocacy continuing to spread the word and build support for advanced recycling in the region. ■

‘Passionate, quiet achiever’ recognised by industry Dr Carol Kilcullen-Lawrence, sustainability consultant, UPM Raflatac has won the 2022 PIDA Industry Packaging Professional of the Year award.

A

SPECIALIST in the field of self-adhesive

labelling, Kilcullen-Lawrence has over 30 years’ experience in the packaging industry, having held various roles including technical and marketing and for the last decade, sustainability. The PIDA judges concurred that she has contributed significantly to the industry and the Australian Institute of Packaging (AIP), and is recognised as a positive, passionate, and quiet achiever for the industry. Starting her career with a role as technical services manager with Jac Australia, Kilcullen-Lawrence progressed to marketing manager where the opportunity for product development arose by working on specific technical challenges faced by customers. This led to some novel products, including adhesives for medical applications like blood donation labels. Her current role as sustainability consultant to UPM Raflatac has provided her with an opportunity to tackle some of the challenging aspects associated with label waste from a converter’s perspective, combined with responsible sourcing and the technical aspect of ensuring the label is exactly matched with the package to enhance package recyclability. With a background in Polymer Chemistry and her PhD gained at Loughborough University of Technology, UK, KilcullenLawrence has a good understanding of the science of the vast array of packaging materials – why each type may be selected to protect a product and carry vital information for the consumer, then be recoverable as a resource once discarded, plus a multitude of steps in between. Acknowledged for her significant contribution to the industry, Kilcullen-Lawrence has been awarded a Fellowship of the AIP and has served on the board as southern director and immediate past president. She is a lecturer on the University of Melbourne Master of Food and Packaging Innovation and has also attained the internationally accredited Certified Packaging Professional (CPP) designation that is recognised in over 60 countries. In September last year, she featured on the PKN Podcast with Petrina Bint, general manager labels at Wedderburn, in a

discussion on recycling label liners and in particular, original label release liner recycling service, RafCycle. Kilcullen-Lawrence takes her passion for sustainability into her personal life. Involved in surf life saving for over 10 years, patrolling and training surf rescue skills, she launched the inaugural Green Patrol this season at Hampton Life Saving Club. The event involved a beach clean by the local community, including a snorkel crew with an under-water litter pick, and presentations to the club’s nippers, demonstrating the impact of litter by the Marine Mammal Foundation. Local politicians were invited, together with Life Saving Victoria and the day was such a success that plans are underway for the next Green Patrol to be rolled out state-wide. ■

ith the 2025 National Packaging Targets and 2030 Food Waste Targets looping closer, now is the time to rethink and redesign food and beverage packaging, according to a group of panellists who spoke at the recent FoodTech Qld event. Innovation and design thinking were covered in this session, along with details on how to embed circular design practices into packaging design processes and to better understand what innovations are standing out on shelf in the region.

“And the solution must be really around the circular economy – we’ve got to try and think about ways to put it back into the true circular economy. “We’re talking about reuse, collection, and redistribution back into the actual packaging network itself. This is where we’re going to have to start working together. Industry, brand owners, supermarkets, retail chains, and the government, need to all come together because it’s not just one Abigail Ford solution that will work across all.”

Close the Loop Group CEO Joe Foster

Close the Loop Group CEO Joe Foster FAIP said design innovation not only helps a business stay ahead of its competitors and resonate with consumers, but also that these innovative and intuitive packs are more sustainable and offer a much lower environmental impact to previous designs. “The biggest challenge we’ve got within recyclability is flexible packaging itself and when we talk about the challenge around recyclability of flexible packaging, it is its end of life – the ability to try and reuse, recover, and essentially repurpose packaging material,” he said. “With the amount of soft plastic out there, the supply is certainly greater than the demand which means there’s plenty of soft plastic currently going to landfill. Until we find a solution for the end of life of soft plastics – something that’s going to be suitable for direct contact with food – that challenge will be there for certainly longer than 2025.

Pact Packaging innovation manager Anhely Millán MAIP addressed how innovation drives the circular economy and what Pact Packaging does to help its customers to achieve national and global packaging targets. She identified some findings from a recent global study commissioned by Pact, which found that consumers are driving the change towards a more sustainable future – especially following COVID. “One in four consumers support brands with social causes, 34 per cent of them use brands that support environmentally-friendly packaging, 44 per cent rate a company’s ethical supply chain as a factor nice to have and 30 per cent seek information on packaging,” she said.

“With consumers wanting to reduce their personal footprints, there needs to be an increased public awareness about the circular economy and businesses need to offer brand transparency, public education, endorse community projects and invest in R&D. “Recycled content and recyclable materials are no longer enough; we need to work on preventing waste from being created. So, co-operation and collaboration is also definitely key to achieve all the targets and everything needed for best practices. “Failure to act will be detrimental to the future success of brands. I really do encourage you to start thinking of how you’re going to achieve your 2025 targets – at least to start on something however small now and then progressively move to a more sustainable supply chain solution.”

As it can be rolled into a cylindrical 3D shape, it can be separated and sorted into the plastics stream, and therefore recycled with all the other plastic materials. “We’ve had positive feedback from our consumers around the ability to recycle the packaging as well as encouraging us to take the leap of faith and actually expanded across our entire retail range,” Carter added. As such, she said that Brookfarm will be transitioning the packaging of its entire retail range to this format by the end of the year.

Cyclpac managing director Edward Whitehead

Brookfarm head of procurement Sally Carter

Brookfarm head of procurement Sally Carter showcased the company’s award-winning packaging design that has been recognised locally and globally for standing out. Carter spoke about how the design of Brookfarm’s kerbside recyclable, high barrier stand up pouch – created in conjunction with Close the Loop Group – offers significant shifts in materials, reductions in environmental impacts, is light weighted, and includes recycled content. “From a business perspective, Brookfarm adopted sustainable practices early on – like using solar power within our facility and regeneration of the farm,” she said. “However, we had a challenge on the consumer side five years ago around what we could do as a business to have a product that can either be biodegradable, compostable, or recyclable and driven through our customers.

Cyclpac managing director Edward Whitehead spoke about the solution it created for Melbourne Coffee, which won the PIDA Sustainable Packaging Design of the Year (Recycle) gold award in 2021. The solution is a 100 per cent recyclable bag from a single source polymer group with a technical barrier to oxygen and moisture for the coffee brand. With the knowledge this will contribute to the ease of recycling, it is fully aligned with the European strategy for soft plastics recycling and a circular economy. “As packaging designers, we have an overwhelming responsibility to food safety and the preservation of food. So whatever you do in designing packaging or putting it together, make sure it serves its primary purpose, which is to arrive to the client in good condition,” Whitehead said. “And if you can do that and extend the shelf life, which should be a big focus of your solution, you must do it. One extra day of shelf life is massive for a retailer so this is something we should focus on.

“At the same time, we needed to have a premium product that ensures the right shelf life of the product, that can be manufactured with the right speed and efficiency, as well as providing a print quality on a recyclable packaging.”

“With Melbourne Coffee, we created a solution using a limited colour pallet to keep the print coverage to a minimum to support ‘end of life’ recycling but without compromise to design aesthetic and appeal. Keeping ink coverage low and using a white substrate to support artwork reduces inputs and supports ease of recycling and material composition.

The final solution created allows consumers to transform the empty, 100 per cent Polyethylene packaging into a 3D shape suitable for their home recycling bin and enabling it to be recycled.

“We also had on the package critical ‘on packaging’ calls to action, combined with clear signposting of appropriate recycling streams in both Australia and Europe provided through ARL, OPRL and Red Cycle.

come flat packed. Government legislation around the world is moving to phase this material out. And if this product is stored in warehouses, they face increased insurance premiums because it is a flammable material,” he said. In response to the challenges, Planet Protector created Woolpack, a recyclable or compostable liner with enclosed wool that is micro-perforated to allow the wool fibres to breathe and create a natural cooling system for products in a box or pouch. “The wool that we use is 100 per cent biodegradable – there is no additives or adhesives used to make the product and it comes flat-packed to save space. Woolpack liners can be reused multiple times, often more times than poly boxes which easily crush and break apart in rough transport.

Planet Protector Packaging sustainability manager Lars Ljung

Planet Protector Packaging sustainability manager Lars Ljung spoke about how the company is on a mission to eliminate polystyrene from supply chains. “Polystyrene has been in the industry for over 70 years. It’s very difficult to recycle and has basically become a bit of a ‘problem child’ in the packaging industry. Some of the other issues with polystyrene is that it is expensive to store because it does not

“Our Woolpack solutions have been tested and proven to outperform both polystyrene and alternative packaging. Clients have also found a reduced need for refrigerant as opposed to polystyrene. This saves resources and reduces freight costs. “From fresh foods to seafood, pharmaceuticals, to chocolate, Woolpack has been proven to keep contents below 5°c for well over 24 hours and between 2°c and 8°c for 72 hours and beyond.” https://propack.pro/redesigning-food-andbeverage-packaging-top-of-mind-at-foodtech-qld/

AIP Save Food Packaging FFW CRC PhD Candidate gets published

R

uby Chan AAIP, PhD Candidate, School of Design RMIT University, recently had some of her research published that focusses on improving packaging to help reduce household food waste.

Part of the solution is to encourage greater collaboration between the research community and industry; the goal of this current article is to present information that would assist. She compared packaging-related household food waste solutions recommended in the academic literature (specifically, primary consumer empirical studies) to those identified from food/ beverage–packaging industry articles. The review covered a 16-year timespan from 2006–2021, globally, to collect data on packaging functions/formats, materials, and food groups. What she observed is a ‘research–practice gap’, where research recommendations differ from industry developments. One finding is that, while most of the packaging functions/formats suggested in the empirical literature have precedence for commercial availability, many packaging solutions developed by industry are not acknowledged in the empirical literature. Other findings are presented in the article. To help provide solutions to address this ‘research–practice gap’, Ruby presented her research findings in a way that is conducive to helping both researchers and industry to identify areas of relevance to act upon. As such, she provides recommendations on combining the unique contributions of researchers and industry to create a fuller picture of HFW, to help facilitate more effective implementation of packaging solutions to help reduce HFW.

Interest is increasing among researchers and industry regarding packaging’s potential to reduce household food waste (HFW). Researchers have recommended packaging solutions and the food/beverage–packagin have developed packaging solutions; g industry are the recommendations and developmen ts related? This review paper connects academic recommendations to industry practice by identifying and comparing packaging solutions industry press-release articles to from the HFW drivers and packaging solutions identified in primary empirical studies. The review covers consumer a 16-year timespan from 2006–2021 , globally, to collect data on packaging functions/formats, materials, and food groups. The analysis shows that industry developments differ research recommendations. While from most of the packaging functions/fo rmats suggested in the empirical have precedence for commercial literature availability, many packaging solutions developed by industry are not acknowledged in the empirical literature. Combining the unique contribution s of research within and external industry creates a fuller picture of to HFW, supporting more effective implementa tion of packaging solutions to help reduce it. There is an opportunity for industry to implement a greater number of packaging formats aligned most frequently reported HFW to the drivers. Enabling greater collaboratio n between the research community industry by bringing together this and literature in a critical review is a major contribution of this paper.

1. Introduction The United Nations Sustainable Developme nt Goal (SDG) 12.3 calls for global action to halve food waste (FW) by 2030 (United Nations General Assembly, 2015). Approxima tely one-third of all the food produced for human consumption globally is discarded, bringing significant environmental, economic, and social damage (Gustavsson et al., 2011; Hanson and Mitchell, 2017). Across the world, a substantial proportion of FW occurs at the consumer level and especially in households (Flanagan et al., 2019). Household food waste (HFW) accounted for 61% of all global FW in 2019 (Forbes et al., 2021), so an effort to reduce HFW is therefore likely to contribute significant progress to the UN SDG Goal. The potential benefits of action are significant as food systems consume nearly 30% of global available energy (FAO, 2015). This contributes to the larger SDG 12 on responsible consumption and production. This comparative literature review will support the ‘act’ stage of the

Target-Measure-Act approach by providing direct information to assist the development and implement ation of packaging solutions to help reduce HFW for a more sustainable future. The Target-Measure-Act approach helps to drive action to reduce FW by setting FW reduction goals, measuring FW, and implement ing reduction strategies (Champions 12.3, 2020). Packaging plays a role in sustainable food systems as it helps to reduce FW (Verghese et al., 2012), preventing waste of the land, water, and energy resources required to produce, process, manage, and deliver food to consumers (FAO, 2013). This paper provides critically-assessed, aggregated informatio n from empirical studies and industry developments for researcher s and the food/beverage–packaging industry to take action to reduce HFW. In comparison to previous studies, the combined researcher -industry perspective links specific packaging products developed by industry to reduce HFW (from industry press releases) to the specific HFW drivers (from empirical research) these packaging address. This paper therefore facilitates

Up-Coming Virtual Courses, Webinars & Tradeshows SEPTEMBER 2022 Introduction to Packaging's Role in the Cold Supply Chain Training Course

NEW

WHEN: 15 September 2022 WHERE: Via Zoom WHAT: We need to build a better reputation of managing fresh food supply and delivery, at all levels of the cold chain. Cold chain integrity is somewhat lacking, excessive food losses are common. Improving the cold supply chain can halve food wastage by 2030. Preliminary and conservative estimates put the cost of food waste within the cold food chain at $3.8 billion at farm gate values. We need to gain an understanding of the extent and the costs of food waste in the cold chain and set up systems for opportunities for improvement. Lack of understanding of the importance of temperature is one of the main reasons for food wastage. With the greatest risks for perishable food occurring during transportation and handling between mobile and stationary refrigeration points. There are sometimes significant temperature variations between truck or trailer, loading docks and storage facilities. Become familiar with the causes of food wastage in the cold chain, to help improve Australia and New Zealand’s cold chain processes and standards. Those of us that are involved in packaging need to work towards a universally adopted code to help all cold chain practitioners lift their compliance record. OBJECTIVES: • Understand the mechanisms and need for a suitable cold supply chain. • Understand the design and implementation of a good workable cold supply chain system. • Gain insights as to why cold supply chain is important and how best to rectify current shortfalls. • Obtain an understanding of the part that packaging people play in the cold supply chain. • Into the future you will need to have knowledge of the cold supply chain so as to make the right decision to avoid huge food wastage. WHO SHOULD ATTEND: • Retailers, manufacturers, businesses interested or involved in cold supply chains. • Any business in packaging looking to enact change to avoid food wastage in the cold supply chain. • Anyone who works in Supply Chain & Logistics, Transport & Distribution, Packaging, Procurement and Operations.
