PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

O

n behalf of the AIP National Board, I wish you and your family a safe holiday period and a rewarding New Year. If 2012 was a great year for us, then 2013 broke all of the records and now 2014 has just got bigger and better. It certainly has been busy and fun being President of our Institute.

Our highlights of the year commenced with formalising a Memorandum of Understanding with the APPMA to work together to create an annual ‘Packaging & Processing Week’ for the Australian packaging industry. This agreement has led to greater sponsorship of the AIP events and scholarships by the APPMA at our National Conference and Forums. The AIP will also be increasing its presence at AUSPACK through 3 days of National Technical Forums.

The National Conference was held at the Sofitel Sydney in June 2014. It is only when you attend other conferences here and around the world, do you realise how enjoyable and well organised our conference is. I was delighted with the warmth and energy of this gathering. The packaging industry is a great group of people.

Our successful relationship with Woolworths and IGD with In-Store training continued with an expanded program that include In-DC training in Shelf Friendly Packaging. This continues to grow our relationship with Woolworths in the field of education.

Our relationship with the WPO also continues to grow. My congratulations to Pierre Pienaar who has been elected to the role of Education Director of the WPO and now sits on their board. Pierre has travelled to Indonesia, Nigeria, Sri Lanka and Vietnam conducting WPO education courses.

In September, we had our annual gathering with our New Zealand members at FoodTech PackTech. The membership in New Zealand is vibrant and growing.

At the conference we launched the Ignite Packaging program for Women in the Packaging Industry. This program has exceeded all expectations. I am pleased to report this course has generated a wonderful level of bonding amongst the attendees and they have formed their own groups in Auckland, Melbourne and Sydney to meet and share outside the course. I look forward to these ladies growing further in our industry.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE cont’d Our education program continues to grow and be well -supported by industry where the half-day courses are held regularly and well-attended in Australia and New Zealand. Our Certificate in Packaging and Diploma in Packaging Technology courses continue to provide the highest level of packaging study in Australasia. This program continues to grow and we will be marketing it to a wider audience in 2015.

Mondelēz have engaged the University of Melbourne to prepare a Master Degree in Food Innovation and Packaging. The AIP will be co-ordinating the Packaging side of the course with many of our members undertaking specialised lecturing roles.

The AFGC continues to engage with the AIP for our expertise. This is underway with the packaging component of the PIF review and will shortly commence with a review of Retail Ready Packaging.

AIP Membership remains strong where many other similar organisations are shrinking. This is a reflection of your commitment. Thank you. While our focus remains in packaging education of our members, we are aware of our fortunate position in this community.

My thanks to all members who organised and ran charity events in 2014 and the sponsors who helped us. Thank you all for your efforts and support to our organisation in 2014. CHEMICAL MIGRATION FROM PACKAGING INTO FOOD

T

he issue of Chemical Migration from Packaging into Food is serious and complex. To assist you in understanding this issue and therefore appreciating the ramifications to your business, the AIP has regularly brought to your attention overseas speakers at National Technical Forums and local experts to your branch seminars. This topic is presently being reviewed by FSANZ. They have issued a Chemical migration from packaging into food – consultation paper. I encourage you to read it. A link to their document is below.

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS ON MANAGING CHEMICAL MIGRATION FROM PACKAGING INTO FOOD. Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) today released a consultation paper seeking further information on the management of the migration of chemicals from packaging into food. “Food packaging has many benefits - it allows food to be transported, prevents microbial contamination and increases shelf life providing convenience for consumers,” FSANZ Chief Executive Officer, Steve McCutcheon, said. “That said, FSANZ would like to learn more about how the migration of chemicals from packaging into food is currently being managed by industry, particularly smaller operators.”

“This paper is part of a broader Proposal which will help us determine whether current safety measures are appropriate or if further measures are required to manage chemical migration from packaging into food,” Mr McCutcheon said.

“Currently, the law requires all food to be safe and suitable. Despite this, some stakeholders continue to have concerns about chemical migration from packaging into food so we want to be sure it is being managed appropriately. “Our preliminary work with peak food industry and packaging bodies has given us a reasonably good understanding of current usage and safety measures.

The results of surveys suggest that good practices are generally being implemented.”

“However, to help us complete the picture, we are seeking further information, particularly from smaller to medium sized businesses, about the kinds of packaging they are using and measures they have in place to ensure safety.”

ARNOTTS SITE VISIT

IP NSW Branch Members had the opportunity recently to attend Arnott’s Huntingwood site. The site visit included a complete Factory Tour, including seeing the mixing of dough (automatic ingredient handling). Attendees also saw Depositing and Sheeting, Cutting and Baking. The tour also showed the secondary packaging, vertical and horizontal FFS, cartoning and case packing. As you can see from the photo everyone looks very happy at the end of the tour! A huge thank you to John Mayfield FAIP for running this tour for us and making it a great day for all!

his ECRA Toolkit provides guidance to businesses considering the use of display pallets for off-location and aisle end applications. The move to display pallets is not a standalone best practice and it can impact numerous elements of the supply chain. If not implemented with due consideration to these impacts it has the potential to increase costs and reduce efficiencies.

ECRA has been pivotal in delivering aligned positioning between major retail organisations, which in itself will not mitigate costs and complexity but should assist suppliers in avoiding costly duplication of effort.

The Toolkit provides the basis for industry standards and should be supplemented by trading partner discussions and product/category considerations. MONDELEZ INTERNATIONAL SITE VISIT

C

ollaboration…Open I nnovation…Shared knowledge…Intrapreneurship. These were just some of the phrases and methods discussed openly at the AIP’s Ringwood Site visit to Mondelēz International’s latest R&D and innovation investment with the Victorian State Government…the Mondelēz International Food Innovation Centre (FIC).

Chaired by AIP’s Victorian Chairman Michael Grima MAIP, our second visit for the year was well attended by 55 industry members, covering a broad spectrum of brand owners, packaging manufactures, material and technology suppliers, design consultants and those keenly looking for ways to collaborate with like-minded individuals for their own innovative pursuits.

The honorable David Hodgett MP officially opened the center only last month however the FIC has been a hot- bed of activity for the past year. The FIC held its inaugural SME Innovation and collaboration workshop in mid October. This was the 4th Victorian event run by the ever- busy FIC team that is looking at fostering collaboration within the food and beverage industry.

The induction tours are part of the team effort to build awareness and also future collaboration opportunities for the FIC. Angeline Achariya, General Manager of the FIC, opened proceedings with a short but and informative presentation about the jointly funded Victorian Ggovernment and Mondelēz International initiative that is the FIC. Angeline touched on the 4 major pillars of the FIC’s remit – Building innovation best practice by enabling SMEs to be Asia export ready, encouraging open innovation opportunities through its innovation and collaboration workshops; through investment in world class innovation capabilities and facilities enabling the food industry to de-risk innovation; and the leadership and development of the Australian first Masters of Food and Packaging Innovation course.

This last point has already taken its first applicants with a view to full offering in semester 1 2015 and is being developed in partnership with the University of Melbourne, the AIP’s educational arm, as well as some of Melbourne’s most prominent food and manufacturing brands.

Upon wrapping up, the guests were split off into 3 groups and ushered around the three key areas of the FIC – The Virtual store, Sensorium and the 3D print and Design lab.

Our groups first pit stop was the Virtual store. This feature showed clearly the advancement since our last tour in March.

Previously a small screen housed in a room a-joining the Design lab, this purpose built complex contained a widened amphitheater with well-spaced armchair’s befitting a Gold Class cinema housing 25 guests comfortably.

With a 9m curved screen, set well beyond peripheral view, we were presented with an impressive simulated view of the shopper experience. Mondelēz International’s Dean McKenzie took our group though the benefits of the virtual store as a way for brands to test impact new packaging ranges, adjust Planograms real-time and measure consumer behaviour scientifically by the use of Eye tracking software and heat mapping.

The rapid testing of packages extends beyond our shores with the ability to mimic convenience and big box store layouts found in major Asian cities and cane be custom built on request.

By utilising the skill set within the 3D Design lab, users of the facility can have virtual models created via photographed samples mapped to 3D models or wallpaper and tagged with GS1 details to be transferred into a virtual environment. This allows targets consumer groups to be convened to measure the impact of new packaging in the aisles real-time via the eye-tracking system.

MONDELEZ INTERNATIONAL SITE VISIT This then dovetailed into their design stage gate process of ideation, concept development, 3D CAD design and 3D Prototyping.

It’s all about speed and getting a tangible object into a users hands - to move from interpretation into a valuable insight so one can develop with confidence. As the teams motto goes – “it’s ok to fail…. just do it fast”!

This presents the food industry both SMEs and FMCG an excellent tool to fast-track development and de-risk via a ‘virtual prototype’ their designs impact at trade.

Moving on from here we entered the world of the ‘consumercentric’ mind of the company’s Hollis Ashman. Hollis presented a table with various groupings of products to focus on aspects of the packaging hierarchy, structures and how we consumers interpret and interact with them. A short video was run focusing on how consumers battled with interpreting new resalable technology used in their standard chocolate family block.

This highlighted how merely adopting cutting edge technology was not enough to improve the consumer experience unless it was clearly communicated to the target in an intuitive manner. This QMA (Qualitative Multivariate Analysis) session– a consumer centric process, puts research into a behavioural and cognitive perspective and assists designers and marketers alike to develop more intuitive ways to measure consumer needs and emotional drivers.

From here Hollis took us through to their Sensory lab – a collection of small individual private white booths with dedicated IPad’s. These booths face internally a test kitchen and the devices are used to capture consumer’s sensory feedback across various product experiences with real time feedback to the insights team.

The last stop on our tour was the 3D Print and Design lab.

Jam packed in this small space were 3 various types of 3D printing and prototyping technologies, a full size Kongsberg cutting table and a plethora of 3D Design tools mastered by the small but committed design team. The lab’s manager Caroline Francis took our tour through a short presentation touching on the value found in conducting store audits, personal profiling and symbolic research of various structures.

Caroline’s design team of Nicholas and Sam then split our group up to go through the particulars of each of the 3 prototyping processes. Variation was highlighted between the color printed plaster epoxy models; high speed Makerbot FDM (Fused Deposition Modelling) models; More durable Dimension Elite FDM models and finally the precision and flexibility of the Polyjet Objet 30 models. Their end-to-end capability was clearly shown with a brief introduction of their Australian first 3D Scanning systems and the flexibility and power of the Kongsberg cutting table that took precedence in the room.

The final wrap up was a return back to the impressive collaboration centre. This area housed not only the vVirtual theater but also a test kitchen, meeting rooms, private booths and collaboration break out areas and easily housed our guests plus visitors of Mondelēz International RD&Q team. Nicolas Georges, R&D Director of Premium Chocolate and Dairy AP, delivered a short wrap up encouraging the gathering to utilise this impressive facility to harness their own innovative agenda.

Nicolas’ vision for this centre is to assist Victoria to become the pinnacle of Food innovation for Australia and a platform for export development into the Asian sector. A compelling challenge set to all present.

Feedback from various guests was of high praise. A promising sight was to see not only the broad spectrum of industries present but the deep discussions and networking post our formal session. It’s not often to see guests still mingling well over an hour past completion.

2015 APPMA SCHOLARSHIP The Australian Packaging and Processing Machinery Association (APPMA), in conjunction with the Australian Institute of Packaging (AIP), are pleased to announce that submissions are open for the seventh annual Scholarship program which will enable a packaging engineer the opportunity to complete a Diploma in Packaging Technology to the value of $9000.

The Diploma in Packaging Technology is an internationally recognised qualification for those wishing to pursue a career in the packaging industry, or for those who are already in the industry and who wish to extend their knowledge and expertise.

Aleah not only has an interest in packaging but also the engineering process and she has had the opportunity to learn about injection technology, in-mould labelling and advanced robotic production systems.�

DOE AWARDS $2.5 MILLION TO NATUREWORKS to Transform Biogas into the Lactic Acid Building Block for Ingeo . The DOE grant supports a NatureWorks and Calysta multi-year program aimed at Ingeo™ feedstock diversification

T

he U.S. Energy Department’s Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy, Bioenergy Technologies Office announced a grant of up to $2.5 million to NatureWorks, one of the world’s leading suppliers of bioplastics, in support of an ongoing program that aims to sequester and use methane, a potent greenhouse gas, as a feedstock for the company’s Ingeo™ biopolymers and intermediates.

The grant supports an ongoing multi-year joint development program between NatureWorks and Calysta, with the specific goal of transforming, via a fermentation process, renewable biomethane into lactic acid, the building block for Ingeo. Ingeo naturally advanced bioplastics and intermediates are used worldwide in a host of consumer and industrial products.

The research and development (R&D) collaboration with Calysta addresses NatureWorks’ strategic interests in feedstock diversification and a structurally simplified, lower cost Ingeo production platform and leverages Calysta’s Biological Gasto-Chemicals® platform for biological conversion of methane to high value chemicals. For NatureWorks, methane could be an additional feedstock several generations removed from the simple plant sugars used today in a lactic acid fermentation process at the NatureWorks Blair, Nebraska, Ingeo production facility.

This June, a year after the joint development program was announced, Calysta demonstrated lab-scale production of lactic acid from methane, a major milestone in the project.

Fundamental R&D should be completed in the next two to three years, enabling pilot production in three to five years.

A greenhouse gas 20 times more harmful than carbon dioxide, methane is generated by the natural decomposition of plant materials and is a component of natural gas.

Biomethane refers specifically to renewably sourced methane produced from such activities as waste-water treatment, decomposition within landfills, farm wastes, and anaerobic digestion. If successful, the technology could directly produce lactic acid from any of these methane sources.

“If proven through this collaboration, methane to lactic acid conversion technology could be revolutionary, providing sustainable alternative feedstocks for Ingeo,” said NatureWorks Ken Williams, Program Leader for the Calysta-NatureWorks collaboration.

“When coupled with NatureWorks’ proven commercial process for lactic acid to Ingeo, the methane to lactic acid process would transform a harmful greenhouse gas into useful and in-demand consumer and industrial products. This disruptive platform could support high-value chemicals and liquid fuels. FREE ENERGY ASSESSMENTS AND IMPLEMENTATION SUPPORT

T

he Australian Food and Grocery Council’s (AFGC) empower program, funded by the Department of Industry, assists SMEs- with less than 200 employees improve energy efficiency and save costs by providing free energy assessments.

The AFGC empower program, in its last phase, provides free energy assessments for all food and grocery businesses. The assessments conducted so far have identified average savings worth 20 per cent of total energy bills. The assessment report includes: • Low-cost energy saving opportunities along with financial savings; • No-cost energy saving opportunities along with financial savings; • Financial pathways to implement these opportunities; and • Feasibility of renewable installations at your site.

The program also provides independent expert advice through the workshops. The workshop, hosted at a food manufacturing site, demonstrates application of the program tools on a site by identifying opportunities to improve energy efficiency and estimating the savings. The AFGC is seeking interest from businesses to host the workshop. A business hosting the workshop will receive: • 3-4 hours onsite technical investigation / support from Energetics (a reputed energy management firm); • Up to two hours implementation support provided after the workshop; and • Business case study.

Trade show celebrates three decades March 2015 will see biennial trade show AUSPACK head to Melbourne, providing a platform for key players in packaging, processing, materials and components to showcase their latest innovations and expertise.

C

elebrAting any anniversary is a

significant milestone, but 30 years as the leading biennial trade exhibition for packaging, processing, materials and components is a testament to the success of AUSPACK and even more reason why 24 to 27 March, 2015, should be blocked in your calendar as ‘out-of-office’.

Established in 1985 by the APPMA, AUSPACK has grown into a highly-credible processing, packaging, materials and components exhibition that is recognised on the global industry calendar. Today AUSPACK exhibitors represent the entire spectrum of the industry – from processing and packaging machinery, to filling systems, packaging films and materials, product identification solutions, materials handling, ancillary components and much more.

Positioned under the umbrella of 2015 Packaging & Processing Week, AUSPACK will bring together some 300 exhibitors from 20 countries, representing over 1000 brands, to showcase new and innovative processing and packaging machinery.

While the food, beverage, dairy and snack food industries are a strong focus, other industries such as baking, meat, seafood, confectionery, fresh produce, automotive, cosmetics and pharmaceuticals will also be represented at the exhibition.

During the four-day trade show, visitors will have the opportunity to meet with hundreds of companies and visit zones such as bioplastics, components and materials.

Following a number of highly successful National Technical Forums that the AIP has run over the last six AUSPACK exhibitions, the 2015 National Technical Forum will be designed to deliver a three-day educational program that will cover a broad range of topics relating to the theme Open Innovation & Collaboration.

The AIP and the APPMA intend to divide the National Technical Forums into breakout sessions, to ensure that a diverse range of issues and topics are covered over the three days. The AIP and the APPMA are looking for a broad range of speakers from all areas of the packaging, processing, materials and components sectors to ensure that the National Technical Forums offer something for everyone.
