016 has been as busy a year as ever for the AIP! With the National Conference, training courses, technical dinners and site visits running across Australia and New Zealand over the last 12 months the Institute is extremely proud of the extensive amount of quality educational events that it has run for the wider industry.

Highlights for the year include the launch of the Save Food Packaging Awards, the launch of the Packaging & Innovation & Design Awards, our first exhibit at ProPak Asia and attending the NZ tradeshow FoodTech PackTech. The Certified Packaging Professional program has started to take momentum in Australasia and the AIP has seen an extremely high interest in the program. The ultimate goal would be to see every packaging department in Australasia have staff with the CPP designation.

SAVE FOOD PACKAGING AWARDS The Save Food Packaging Awards were developed by the World Packaging Organisation, in conjunction with Messe Dusseldorf and Interpack, and are designed to recognise companies who are developing innovative and sustainable packaging that minimises food losses and food waste, extends shelf life and improves the supply of food. A key purpose of the Save Food Packaging Awards is to raise awareness of the critical role of packaging in reducing food waste resulting in a positive overall environmental impact. The AIP believes that it is time that packaging technologists design packaging to save food and we are very proud that we were the first country in the world to establish the Save Food Packaging Awards program.

PACKAGING & INNOVATION DESIGN AWARDS The AIP and the APPMA, are pleased to advise that they have established the Packaging & Processing Innovation and Design Awards (PIDA) for Australia that will recognise companies and individuals who are making a significant difference in their field. The Packaging & Processing Innovation & Design Awards will recognise companies designing innovative packaging and processing materials and solutions, packaging and machinery/equipment within the Food, Beverage, Health, Beauty & Wellness and Domestic & Household markets. We encourage everyone in industry to nominate for these industry awards.

YEAR IN REVIEW In addition there will be two special company awards and three individual awards. The PIDA Awards are the exclusive award program for all Australian entries into the prestigious WorldStar Packaging Awards. Applications close Friday the 20th of January 2017 with winners announced at the inaugural Gala Awards Night to be held on the 8th of March at the Novotel, Sydney Olympic Park alongside AUSPACK. PROPAK ASIA 2017 ProPak Asia 2016 recorded 40,893 visitors with delegations attending from 68 countries over the four day trade show.

The AIP had the opportunity of being a part of the inaugural Australian Pavilion at ProPak Asia which was a resounding success in its first year. Exhibitors within the Australian pavilion – which was hosted by the APPMA - included Accupak, Adaptapack, Confoil, HMPS, Rhima, the AIP and the host of the pavilion the APPMA. In addition to exhibiting in the Australian Pavilion, the AIP participated in a briefing session with Austrade to better understand the growth opportunities in the Asean Region, we also had the pleasure of meeting His Excellency Paul Robilliard, the Australian Ambassador for Thailand at a networking event that was hosted in the Australian Pavilion and Pierre Pienaar was a guest speaker at not one but two seminars that were held alongside the exhibition. The AIP had an overwhelming response to their presence at the show and met with many visitors over the four days. It was evident that education and training are high on the agenda in the Asean Region. The AIP will be working on how the Institute can deliver on education within the region in the not-too-distant-future. ProPak exceeded all expectations for the Institute and we look forward to joining the Australian Pavilion again in 2017.

FOODTECH PACKTECH 2017 AIP has been a long-standing supporter and exhibitor at FTPT and the show in 2016 was the largest to date. A number of free seminars also took place at the show, and the AIP hosted a panel discussion on understanding sustainable packaging innovation and trends featuring Confoil NZ’s national sales manager James Romhany, UPM Raflatac’s Carol Lawrence FAIP, and Greenchip director, Anthony Peyton MAIP. CERTIFIED PACKAGING PROFESSIONAL (CPP) DESIGNATION Isn’t it time that you joined recognised packaging experts from around the world with the industry’s leading professional designation? Attaining the CPP® designation is an excellent investment in your professional development and the credential defines the packaging professional and allows organisations to seek out and hire the right professional based on verified knowledge, skills and industry contributions. Using the CPP® program to assess and evaluate one’s professional competency validates you as internationally proficient as a packaging professional; a cut above your peers. The Certified Packaging Professional (CPP)® designation is a registered trademark of the Institute of Packaging Professionals (IoPP) and is now internationally recognised by both IoPP and AIP. On behalf of the AIP we would like to thank all of you for your continued support of the Institute this year and to remind you that the planning for activities in 2017 is already underway and includes the 2017 National Technical Forums, the 2017 PIDA Awards and attendance at AUSPACK. Divisional activities are being worked on as we speak and you will see we already have a few events locked in for February. If you would like to host a site visit or speak at a dinner please drop us an email and let us know.

If you have any ideas on additional activities and programs please do the same as we are always looking at ways to ensure that we are offering you exactly what you need in terms of education and training. For those companies looking to show their support for the Institute there are affordable sponsorship opportunities available for the forums and the awards. Without support from industry the AIP cannot provide the quality of speakers and events as they do so we invite you to consider at least one of these programs for 2017.

EDUCATION DIRECTORS END OF YEAR REPORT Written by Pierre Pienaar (Prof ) MSc, FAIP, CPP, AIP Education Director

FORMAL EDUCATION I am comfortable in the way that both the Certificate and Diploma course activities are being undertaken and the good communication that our Education Administrator maintains on a regular basis between students and AIP office. We await the November exam results and certainly hoping for good outcomes with many smiling students. The plans that we put in place early this year in trying to grow the student numbers did not have the industry response that we were hoping for. We will need to seek alternative methods and ideas of growing these numbers where we can turn enquiries into students actually doing the courses.

EDUCATION COMMITTEE This committee which meets once a year on the Gold Coast met during February where a significant basket of ideas and discussion points all relating to some or other aspect of education were discussed. There has been an enormous amount done generally in education these past 12 months and I am of the opinion that we need to consolidate and see what has been achieved, what still needs to be done in the short term and establish how we will achieve what needs to be done in the new year. We also looked at longer term planning, which aspects to concentrate on, future strategies, ideas, covering all the facets of AIP Education and Training as well as financial aspects thereof.

SCHOLARSHIPS The AIP along with the Australian Packaging and Processing Machinery Association (APPMA) award diploma as well as certificate scholarships, and we are gearing up already for next year and have had a few encouraging enquiries. A few years ago we had some. May I encourage all those keen to study but do not have the financial means, to apply for these scholarships. If you were unsuccessful before, you may well be successful in 2016. ½ DAY TRAINING I am extremely proud what the AIP achieved in this form of education and training. All is progressing well in this area of education. The AIP has 16 short courses (half day courses) that can be delivered at any time. In 2016 we launched Accessible Design. Additional courses will come on stream in 2017.

CORPORATE PARTNERING PROGRAM Our business tailored training program focuses on specific business needs and requirements and provides a learning experience for a specific group of employees or an entire work force. This is usually based on the certificate and/or diploma course in Packaging Technology content. In the past it has worked well as it is company specific. We currently are working with two companies for 2016.

CERTIFIED PACKAGING PROFESSIONAL 2017 Through the IoPP, AIP members can sign up to take the WPO accredited qualification as a Certified Packaging Professional.

Already 6 other countries have also taken up the challenge and opportunity of gaining this global accreditation. The AIP already has six accredited CPP members and a number of others are currently thinking about taking the program.

ASIAPACK 2016 Since our business is about education and training we decided to have an AIP stand at ProPak Asia 2016 in Thailand. We had many enquiries from a variety of Asian countries but as yet have not resulted in actual student numbers growing.

MASTER’S DEGREE IN FOOD AND PACKAGING INNOVATION This year again at University of Melbourne the AIP lectured at the Masters Degree. The Food Packaging Design intensive commenced this year plus the Food Packaging Materials intensive training in its second year took place during the midyear break from 4 - 15 July 2016. I extend my thanks and appreciation to the team of lecturers for both intensives who did a splendid job in the Veterinary Science department during these intensives as it all ran like clockwork. It was a great success and the feedback from the university has been most encouraging. The UoM, together with the AIP took part in an open day promoting careers in September 2016. Next July 2017 we will see the AIP delivering again the two intensive over two weeks for the Masters course, namely the Food Packaging Design content as well as the Food Packaging Materials and Processes content.

INSTITUTE OF PACKAGING PROFESSIONALS (USA) The AIP has partnered with the Institute of Packaging Professionals (IoPP) in the United States of America to create an opportunity for our members and others to be able to study on-line the Fundamentals of Packaging in bite-size modules. This offer has just been launched and the response from industry has been encouraging. For those interested I encourage you to contact the AIP office because you are now able to study at your own place in the comforts of your home.

PACKAGING TEXT BOOKS The AIP has ensured that all Members have the opportunity to purchase at a discounted amount certain books that the AIP has supported. The AIP believes that these books helps you stay abreast or updates those wanting to know more through the medium of books in the bound format.

WPO EDUCATION AND TRAINING IN DEVELOPING COUNTRIES The AIP continues to lead from the front in assisting in training within the World Packaging Organisation (WPO).

The main focus over the past few years has been to run Packaging Technology Residential Training Programs in Asian developing countries. The good news is that Africa is back on the cards with Nigeria on the training calendar for 2017 after a 3 year layoff from those areas due to the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) outbreak in West Africa. Kenya now also comes on stream which is really encouraging.

The courses in Nigeria and Kenya will be Pharmaceutical Packaging. The intention next year will be to offer training in Indonesia, China, , Italy and Africa whilst we will be breaking new ground in Iran. We continue to exploring the possibilities of training in Bolivia, Colombia and Mexico as well as Hungary, Croatia and the Czech Republic.

GENERAL Education and Training remains the cornerstone of the AIP and I will continue to focus on just that, ensuring that we remain abreast with developments here and abroad. The AIP is educating and training over a wide front, it is exciting, demanding but most fulfilling. We will continue to serve our Members in education in the way that suits them best.

This is a newly created role for an experienced food packaging professional based in Queensland’s Garden City. Toowoomba is a rural hub which is the gateway to the Queensland Outback and has all the facilities you would expect from a major city. There are great views, exciting day trips and a true taste of the rural lifestyle while still being only two hours drive from Brisbane or the coast. This company supplies the major retailers in Australia and exports products to countries in the around the world.

This role is a very unique role and will involve the development of products in different packaging media and sizes.

Typical tasks include: • Review and rework existing products.

• Develop new packaging for products.

• Ensure product labelling is to standard.

• Conduct research and sensory evaluation.

• Lead new products to trials.

• Work with sales and marketing for product design and launch.

• Work with quality assurance and production for new products.

• Develop a pipeline of new products.

In order to be considered for this opportunity, you must meet the following criteria: • Previous experience working on new product packaging.

JUNIOR PACKAGING TECHNOLOGIST ABOUT THE BUSINESS AND THE ROLE We are a rapidly expanding, large international manufacturing company manufacturing a large range of premium, quality products. Our key brands have a strong presence both locally and in international markets and we export our products to 22 countries across the world. Substantial growth has occurred and it is envisaged to continue into the future. As such, a new opportunity has arisen for a Junior Packaging Technologist to join our Quality Control Team. The purpose of this role is to project manage packaging projects from generation stage to launch stage.

JOB TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES Working with the Packaging Technologist you will be responsible for: • Working on multiple packaging projects concurrently, meet deadlines and deal effectively with people from various functions and levels via cross functional teams.

• Working with suppliers on their abilities and limitations in both manufacturing and printing.

• Supporting and coordinating relevant trials and ensure all projects are documented and relevant systems are updated.

• Ensuring packaging meets regulatory compliance.

• Providing technical support to both the Packing Hall and Sampling teams when packaging issues arise.

• Skills and experience.

QUALIFICATIONS • Qualifications for this role require the applicant to have a minimum Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Industrial Design and ideally tertiary qualifications in Packaging Technology e.g. Diploma of Packaging with the Institute of Packing.

• The successful applicant will need to have minimum 1-2 years’ experience in a similar role within a FMCG, Pharmaceutical, Personal Care or Packaging Industries and a sound understanding of Packaging Technology in a manufacturing environment.

SPECIFIC INDUSTRY EXPERIENCE • Minimum 1-2 years’ experience in a similar role within a FMCG, Pharmaceutical, Personal Care or Packaging Industries is required.

• GMP/GLP/5S laboratory knowledge and experience is desired.

• Professional Skills as demonstrated by success/work experiences.

• Sound understanding of Packaging Technology in a manufacturing environment.

• Strong communication skills.

• Strong understanding of the requirements for good documentation practices needed for a therapeutic production environment.

BEHAVIOUR • Ability to adapt to changing environment (ie. Modify day to day duties to suit production requirements) • Tolerant – job requires communication across production and warehouse, therefore it is vital that the person can work with a variety of personnel.

• Ability to analyse own work and follow through investigations.

• Decisiveness – ability to review data and make decisions, without rashness.

he Australian Institute of Packaging (AIP) and the Australian Packaging & Processing Machinery Association (APPMA), are pleased to advise that they have established the Packaging & Processing Innovation and Design Awards (PIDA) for Australia that will recognise companies and individuals who are making a significant difference in their field.

The Design Innovation of the Year company awards will recognise organisations that have designed innovative packaging and processing materials, innovative packaging and processing machinery/equipment within each of these four manufacturing categories: 1.Food. 2.Beverage. 3.Health, Beauty & Wellness. 4.Domestic & Household.

In each of these four categories there will be an award given for: 1.Materials & Packaging and 2.Packaging Machinery/Equipment.

The Australian Institute of Packaging (AIP) and the Australian Packaging & Processing Machinery Association (APPMA) are currently at the planning stage of the 2017 National Technical Forums that will be held as a part of Packaging & Processing Week at the Sydney Showgrounds, Sydney Olympic Park on the 7th to the 9th of March 2017. Following a number of highly successful National Technical Forums over the last seven AUSPACK exhibitions, the 2017 National Technical Forum will be designed to deliver a three-day educational program that will cover a broad range of topics relating to the theme Innovation & Design.

The 2017 Packaging & Processing Week National Technical Forums will attract delegates from all facets of the packaging and processing industry of both technologist and management levels (such as design, development, marketing, production, engineering, supply chain and logistics personnel) to equipment suppliers, raw material providers, users of packaging, retailers and consumers.

LIST OF RECOMMENDED TOPICS A list of topic areas are included for your consideration. These topics should be considered from the point of view of technical, environmental and consumer issues. This list is not limiting and any additional ideas would be welcomed.

PACKAGING TECHNOLOGY TRAINING MILAN, ITALY WPO EDUCATION TRAINING PROGRAM – OCTOBER 2016 Written by Professor Pierre Pienaar (Prof ) MSc, FAIP CPP, WPO Vice President - Education

Here are the top seven students obtaining excellent marks in their oral examinations

T

his international packaging training course offered by the World Packaging Organisation (WPO), in conjunction with the Istituto Imballaggio Italiano (III) and the Australian Institute of Packaging(AIP), took place in Milan in early October 2016 with 18 attending the training in the first such training in Italy.

The aim of the training was to equip participants with greater in-depth English packaging knowledge in order for them to tackle the challenges facing the packaging industry in their current environment and to prepare them for the competitive advantages emerging in the European Economic Community market. This WPO Packaging Technology intensive training course serves to grow participants’ confidence in packaging capabilities, providing a level of insight and understanding of the packaging industry that adds real and measurable value to careers and businesses.

It was a wonderful week of learning and sharing of experiences and challenges for all participants. Once again, the desire and the need for greater knowledge and up-to-date expertise in the science and technology of packaging were clearly evident. By far the majority of the students present were graduates in some field or other but their careers had found them associated with the packaging industry where they either feel overwhelmed or under-qualified or, by their own admission after training, in a new situation where they discovered that they “never knew what they didn’t know!!”

All were enthusiastic with their new found English knowledge. They were confident that their learning would make a significant difference in their work place and in future decisions especially those that interface in English with suppliers and customers. I was duly impressed with their oral exam results on the final day where each student was presented with a technical packaging scenario and had to explain to the class what they would do in resolving the matter in their second language, English.

The participants were from varying packaging fields, such as convertors in board, paper, flexibles, rigid plastics, users in food, confectionery, pharmaceutical, packaging education and packaging consumers where they soon found how to tackle and solve practical packaging issues relating to their own workplace, especially in the field of saving food.

The on-going aim of this teaching and learning is to equip more and more people with a better understanding of the impact, the effects and the power of appropriate packaging. The ubiquitous pack can be a friend or a foe but with greater knowledge on its role from design to reuse, our world could solve many of its problems. The future of packaging and education in this field is exciting.

PACKAGING INNOVATION OF THE MONTH THE DEFINITION OF AN ABSOLUT-LY ICONIC PACKAGE

uring the past few years, more than a handful of brands across myriad end-use categories have rolled out newly redesigned packaging under the marketing hype and PR guise of “our new iconic package.”

While they shall remain nameless here, I would vehemently challenge each one by saying, “You don’t instantly create an icon simply by saying it is so.” Icons earn their stripes, their wings, their reputations over the course of years, decades and in some cases, centuries.

In actuality, few brands globally can lay claim to actually having an “iconic” package – one that consumers, not the brand owner, sees as being synonymous with its brand. Toblerone.

Kikkoman. Heinz Ketchup. Tiffany. And of course, Coca-Cola. Those brands have earned iconic packaging status. And now, to that list, I would most definitely add Absolut.

Even in its unadorned state, Absolut’s simple cylinder, soft, rounded shoulder, short neck and slightly oversized metallic cap needs no further introduction to get a shopper to pay attention to it on a crowded shelf. Yet, almost as if to bely its brand essence, Absolut has made a habit of making consumers feel less like vodka shoppers and more like a familiar and sophisticated drinking buddy. It has achieved that by delivering an occasional, consistently stunning and yet understated graphics twist over top of its iconic structure.

According to Mintel’s established Make It Mine trend, one-size-fits-all is dead. In certain categories, the assembly line approach, even to packaging, kicked the bucket a long time back, in some cases even decades ago. For example, it’s hard to remember when you couldn’t customise your car. More recently, it’s hard to fathom when you couldn’t customise your coffee. It’s the very pervasiveness of customisation that makes the Make It Mine trend what it is today: an expectation. And one that consumers simply won’t do without.

In fact, according to Mintel, 25% of luxury goods buyers say that they define luxury goods as those that offer the choice to customise or which are personalised. That proportion jumps to 38% for 18-24-year-olds.

In Absolut’s case, it has fully recognised that no two people are alike. In its Absolut Originality series a drop of cobalt blue was infused into each glass bottle. This colouring technique has been used for centuries in hand-made art glass, but never before has it been applied to create four million original bottles. Added just as the molten glass goes into the mould at 1,100°C, the drop of cobalt blue streams down inside the glass creating a unique streak of blue. At that temperature the cobalt is invisible, but as the glass cools off, a beautiful and unique blue infusion appears. On the shelf, the bottles created a family brand feel, but with each bottle being slightly different than every other.

Consumers could choose which one they could make uniquely their own.

The brand’s “Absolut Unique,” project, in which like snowflakes, no two bottles were the same, required a complete re-engineering of the company’s production plant in Sweden.

What was described as “carefully orchestrated package decoration randomness,” created 4 million bottles, each uniquely decorated, and made an equal number of consumers feel like they had “made an Absolut bottle mine.”

In a more subdued effort, Absolute Elecktrik, the venerable clear bottles were made available in metallic blue and silver. The decoration effort was a continuation of its Absolut Nights campaign, and personalised the experience for consumers by evoking a feeling of the energy of an electric light.
