Message from the AIP President Dear AIP Members, I would like to take this opportunity as we enter the holiday season at the close of 2023 to thank each and every one of you for your support this year, whether it was attending the AIP 2023 Australasian Packaging Conference, training courses, virtual site tours, webinars, in-person packaging forums, the Australasian Packaging Innovation & Design (PIDA) Awards, or the 60th celebrations.

anniversary

2023 certainly has been a very busy year and of course I personally have been delighted to take on the role of President part way through the year. 2023 was also the AIP's 60th year and we celebrated in style and shared a lot of happy memories at the function in September. Earlier in the year we also had an incredibly successful conference that was very well attended and there was a great buzz around the conference. It reminded me how strong the packaging industry is in Australia & New Zealand and with collaboration being the key buzzword of the conference we saw plenty of evidence of that. As an industry we certainly have plenty of challenges ahead as the packaging design guidelines develop and become mandated by 1st January, 2026. The AIP has never been more relevant than it is today and that in no small part is due to the work of our Executive Director supported by the teams in Education and back office functions. We always say that that the AIP punches above our weight in packaging innovation and that was evidenced again by the outstanding Australasian Packaging Innovation & Design (PIDA) Award winners and the second place ranking of Australia & New Zealand in the Worldstar Packaging Awards. I would certainly like to think we have a similarly strong showing in this next round of Worldstar Packaging Awards. At our core we are an educational Institute and 2023 was one of our biggest years with training and education provided to over 6000 people in Australia, New Zealand, Thailand and the Philippines. I am sure we can count on your support in 2024 which should prove to be another massive year in our history. Best wishes to you, your families and your colleagues for this holiday period and I look forward to seeing many of you through 2024.

SUSTAINABLE PACKAGING DESIGN

It is an honour for me to receive the GOLD award in the food category and a High Commendation in the sustainable packaging category. Winning these awards means that my research into packaging design and recyclable packaging has been validated by experts in the field, which makes me very happy. During the development of ‘Cece Chocolate Packaging’, I conducted interviews with my target audience and based my design statement on their real-life experiences. I learned that it is critical to make design adapt to the user rather than the other way around. Hongjun Qian

Prior to my journey with PIDA, back in my university days, packaging design was like a distant WINNER star in the creative galaxy – just out of reach. Winning the Gold and Bronze awards now feels like fireworks lighting up my path towards becoming an industrial designer who’s all about making the world a better place. Design isn’t just about making things look pretty; it’s about taking big problems and giving them a stylish twist. WHEN: 1 February 2024, 10.30 am to 12.30 pm WHERE: Hildago Room (Mezzanine Floor), World Trade Centre Metro Manila, Pasay City, Philippines WHAT: The introduction to Sustainable Packaging Design Guidelines will enable companies to deep-dive into their existing and new packaging development processes to ensure that the business is reducing the environmental footprint of all packaging where possible, and at the same time meeting global and local food waste and packaging waste targets. The Sustainable Packaging Guidelines (SPGs) have been established to assist the design and manufacture of packaging that meets the sometimes conflicting demands of the market, consumer protection and the environment. Sustainable Packaging ultimately ensures that the design provides the lowest possible environmental impact compared to existing or conventional packaging. Sometimes achieving the lowest possible environmental impact can be challenging, particularly when balancing various environmental criteria with other functional and commercial considerations. The Power of Collaboration: AIP and APCO Join Forces

I

n a strategic move aimed at strengthening the Australian and New Zealand packaging landscape, the Australian Institute of Packaging (AIP) and the Australian Packaging Covenant Organisation (APCO) have jointly announced a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). The agreement signifies a collaborative effort to align sustainable packaging practices throughout industry. Under this agreement, the two peak bodies have formed a strategic partnership that aims to improve packaging and sustainability knowledge in the Australia and New Zealand region. It will provide proof points for sustainability professionals regarding their packaging and sustainability credentials. This will be achieved through AIP facilitation and delivery of APCO focused educational courses which will be available to industry in 2024. The focus of the courses is on uplifting skill levels, and recognising knowledge in APCO and packaging sustainability related topics such as the Australasian Recycling Label (ARL) Program.

‘This strategic partnership is a pivotal moment for APCO, reinforcing our commitment to building capability in Australia’s packaging system to transition to a circular economy’, said APCO CEO, Chris Foley, ‘Together, we aim to elevate industry knowledge, empower our Members as well as the broader industry, and drive positive change towards a more environmentally conscious future.’

AIP NEWSLETTER DECEMBER 2023

AIP’s Executive Director, Nerida Kelton FAIP, added, ‘The AIP is excited about the transformative impact that this strengthened partnership will offer the packaging industry. After serving the industry for 60 years this agreement not only highlights our commitment to education but also signifies a pivotal step toward a more sustainable circular economy for Australasian packaging. Together, AIP and APCO aim to elevate packaging knowledge and training and improve core technical competencies across the industry. This will drive positive change and set new standards for designing better packaging for the region.’ With a history of collaboration between APCO and the AIP, the formalisation of this partnership will contribute to stronger alignment of industry and the promotion of a circular economy for packaging.

A

significant number of AIP Members headed to Sydney in November for a very long day that included the APCO AGM, the interactive Future of packaging regulatory framework workshops and then the annual APCO Awards. The AIP re-confirmed the incredibly skilled and talented Richard Smith FAIP as our industry association board Member for APCO for another term and we also congratulate another AIP Member Alan Adams MAIP for joining the board! The AIP had a high number of members also participate in the Future of packaging regulatory framework workshops and we look forward to strengthening our relationship with APCO heading into, and beyond 2025. During the APCO awards our very own Fellow Bryan McKay was recognised as Sustainability Champion of the year, which is a well-deserved award for being an outstanding packaging technologist. Bryan leads a brilliant technical packaging team at Woolworths that are working hard to meet the 2025 National Packaging Targets. We were all cheering very loud! APCO CEO Chris Foley also recognised not only the partnership that they have with the AIP on numerous occasions during the day, but he also highlighted that the AIP is the backbone of packaging wisdom and knowledge in the industry. If you are not a Member of the AIP, or you need help with any of the 2025 National Packaging Targets then please reach out as we have an amazing technically skilled education team that is here to help you and your business. Opal Fibre Packaging Wodonga officially open for business

O

pal’s world class, $140 million corrugated cardboard packaging facility in Wodonga was officially opened today, during National Recycling Week.

Opal’s Wodonga facility, which utilises the latest advanced, high-speed packaging manufacturing technology, has a total footprint of approximately 55,000 square metres. The facility will process recycled and kraft paper from Opal’s Botany Mill in Sydney and Maryvale Mill in the Latrobe Valley. Opal has invested in Australia’s newest corrugating facility, which will produce packaging for a wide range of fresh produce, food processing, FMCG and manufacturing industries across Australia. The facility also features a highly automated materials and waste handling system. Mr Fumio Manoshiro, Chairman of Nippon Paper Industries Co., Ltd, officially opened the Fibre Packaging facility by unveiling a special commemorative plaque made by the creative design team at Opal Specialty Packaging. Opal is a member of NIPPON PAPER GROUP, one of the world’s leading pulp and paper manufacturers. The Victorian Government also provided grant funding for the project, to support jobs in regional Victoria. Minister for Regional Development, Gayle Tierney, congratulated Opal on the opening of its new facility. “Our support for Opal’s new $140 million investment in Wodonga is a huge vote of confidence for creating new jobs and doing business right here in regional Victoria. “We are thrilled to extend our congratulations to Opal for the opening of its new world class site which firmly places Wodonga as a critical city for manufacturing, innovation and investment.” Over 450 direct and indirect workers were involved in the construction and machinery installation, with the majority from the local region. Aligned with Opal’s commitment to support regional employment, the site promotes a flexible work model. This is

Opal’s first site to implement this progressive way of working. Community word-of-mouth has played an important role in recruiting new team members, and the site is expected to support more than 400 direct and flow-on jobs on-going. Opal is focussed on sustainable business practices and the site incorporates: • Water harvesting. • Solar panels on the facility’s vast roof. • Condensate recovery system, which recovers and reuses steam during the manufacturing process, which will reduce the site’s reliance on gas. Mr Chris Daly, Executive General Manager, Packaging, said it was appropriate that Opal was officially opening its Fibre Packaging Wodonga site during National Recycling Week. “Our customers and the market are driving demand for cardboard packaging with recycled content, which in turn can be recycled when it has been used. “Opal’s Wodonga corrugating facility will be able to produce up to 720,000 square metres of high quality, Australian made cardboard packaging per day. That equates to approximately 100,000 tonnes of finished corrugated packaging a year. “We are delighted to share the official opening of Opal Fibre Packaging Wodonga with a number of key customers, representing some of Australia’s most recognised and iconic brands,” said Mr Daly. Opal operates an integrated value chain in recyclable cardboard packaging. Wodonga was specifically selected based on its central location to the East Coast of Australia and will play a strategic role in servicing and growing Opal’s customer base. www.opalanz.com

AIP attends WPO Board Meeting

by Nerida Kelton FAIP, Executive Director - AIP, Vice President Sustainability & Save Food - WPO

I

am proud to have represented Australia and New Zealand as the ANZ Board Member for the World Packaging Organisation meetings in November.

The week is always extremely hectic with media briefings, Executive Team Meetings, Working Group meetings and Board Meetings. In addition as Vice President for Sustainability and Save Food I hosted our working group meeting which is where we hear from all of our Members from across the globe. Added to this the AIP’s very own Education Director Prof Pierre Pienaar finished his six year term as WPO President. Pierre started his term in Australia at the Gold Coast so it was only apt that he finished in his birth country. I was so pleased I was there for both. Pierre THANK YOU for all that you have done for the WPO over the last six years and for how you elevated the organisation globally. To Luciana Pellegrino who is stepping in as the first female President for WPO firstly congratulations once again! What a unique honour for you to raise the voice globally for women in packaging. Luciana, on behalf of everyone in the ANZ region and the AIP we are here to support you on this fabulous journey you have ahead. Listening to your vision for the future of WPO this week I have no doubt you will take the organisation to an even higher level. Some other very special moments during the week… 1. Pierre was recognised as a Fellow of the Institute of Packaging South Africa for his global and significant contribution to the packaging industry over many decades. To my knowledge he is the ONLY person who has ever been President of two different peak professional bodies (AIP and IPSA) and to have Fellowships from both. I was cheering so loudly as I know how much one Fellowship means, let alone two! 2. I had the opportunity to present a Spanish translation of the World behind Recycling (Sustainability for Kids) children’s book, that was written by AIP Member Anhely Millán to the head of the packaging association in Spain Nacho Cusí. Nacho was looking forward to showing everyone the book when he returns. 3. We launched the Japanese translation of the Global Packaging Design for Recycling Guide with the Japan Packaging Institute. To Ide san, Arita san and Akieda san thank you. 4. We shared with the 61 member countries that the AIP have finalised the Save Food Packaging design guidelines, checklists, case studies and the new training course that can be rolled out across the globe.

New Consumer Recycling Report reveals opportunities & challenges at the bin-face he Australian Packaging Covenant Organisation (APCO) has published Australasian Recycling Label Consumer Insights Report 2023, its annual benchmarking survey exploring consumer recycling attitudes, beliefs, and behaviours in Australia and New Zealand.

The report reveals three quarters of Australians (74%) still believe that a trip to the recycling bin is the most impactful thing they can do for the environment. Regular recycling was voted more environmentally impactful than reusable shopping bags (61%), switching the lights off (58%) and using refillable containers (43%). Meanwhile just a fifth of Aussies (20%) think cutting their red meat consumption is a top green priority, and a third (34%) consider swapping the bus or train for the car will drive the biggest impact. However, when it comes to recycling, confusion is still a challenge. Half of Australian households (50%) find it difficult to know what can and can’t be recycled at home and the majority (65%) want more information about how to recycle. Australians are also embracing their local drop off point – an impressive 21% head to their local container deposit scheme (CDS) to drop off plastic bottles, while 30% use the service to earn cash on their aluminium cans. On-pack labelling continues to present the best channel for businesses to help their customers recycle packaging correctly. Packaging labels are the most common place people look for recycling advice (62% of Australians look at least once), while half would look to the signage around their bins (52%) or simply a quick google search (52%).

The Australasian Recycling Label (ARL) continues to play an important role in helping Australians put packaging in the right bin. Awareness of the ARL has continued to grow steadily year on year (47% in 2018 to 76% in 2023) and the majority (76%) think it is a great idea and want to see it on all packaging (74%). Critically, when tested about which packaging belongs in the yellow bin, Australians were better recyclers when the ARL was present on pack.

New Consumer Recycling Report reveals opportunities & challenges at the bin-face Since its inception, the ARL Program has positively influenced the packaging design choices of brand owners and promotes circular economy initiatives. As the only evidence-based recycling label in Australia and New Zealand, the ARL plays a significant role in positively impacting consumer behaviour both at the bin and at the checkout. Chris Foley, APCO CEO, says: “Understanding the pain points that everyday people are experiencing at the bin is an essential part of building an effective recycling system. One year on from the closure of the much-loved REDcycle program, it’s encouraging to see that Australians still trust and value recycling.

“For businesses, it’s essential we reward that trust by providing accurate recycling information to make the process as simple as possible. We know the ARL plays a vital role in helping consumers make responsible purchasing and packaging recycling decisions. More than that, it’s a great tool for businesses to understand the materials they are using in their packaging and what the environmental outcomes are. “There has never been a greater time or opportunity for businesses to demonstrate their commitment to packaging sustainability.” Access the full Australasian Recycling Label Consumer Insights Report 2023 here.

Wellman Packaging celebrates 50 years From humble beginnings to what is now a well-known and established name in the Australian packaging industry, Wellman Packaging is celebrating five decades of innovation, advanced manufacturing, and sustainability.

T

HE BUSINESS WAS founded by John Wellman in 1973, and has developed under the leadership of his son, Craig, into a Tier-1 supplier of rigid plastics packaging to many global brands, including Colgate-Palmolive, Nestlé, Mars Food, Kraft-Heinz, along with domestic retailers such as Woolworths and Aldi – attributed to decades of providing world class solutions with a holistic, end-to-end approach including packaging design, manufacturing, assembly, logistics, and supply chain engineering. PKN first profiled Wellman in 2008, finding it ‘flying under the radar’ with rapid expansion of its existing closures business after having established new food-grade facilities in Sydney in 2001. Not long after this, in 2010, Wellman completed a $6m turnkey project with Swiss machine manufacturer Netstal, Left: Examples of Wellman-led innovation include Colgate-Palmolive’s homecare bottles with recycled content, the Nestlé Hot Chockee thin-walled PP cup ,and a Squeezee tomato sauce bottle for Woolworths.

and its toolmaker Otto-Hofstetter, to manufacture PET preforms for customers wanting to make their own bottles via two-stage stretch-blow moulding including ‘blow-fill’. Wellman was supported by Colgate as its ‘anchor’ customer, representing a strategic expansion of their already long relationship that commenced in 1983, and now spans 40 years of partnership together. Digging deep again in 2013 with another $5m turnkey project, the company installed Australia’s first all-electric extrusion blow moulding machines from Germany’s Uniloy B&W, each highly customised to meet Wellman’s food grade and GMP requirements, to fulfil contracts for squeezy sauce bottles initially, and then homecare bottles for Colgate and later, Henkel. Craig Wellman explains, “We have always supported growth by making solid investments in the best facilities, the best (European) equipment, and development of the best staff, so that we might attract, service and retain the world’s best clients. We think in terms

of inter-generational relationships that span many decades and beyond. For our family it is a question of legacy, to all stakeholders, but especially the 40 staff who have invested their working lives into what we have set out to achieve, and to whom we are extremely grateful.” Wellman has continued its equipment program, with substantial investments across injection and blow moulding – including all-electric injection moulding machines from its German partner, Arburg, especially for fliptop caps and thin-walled packaging; the addition of two-stage stretch-blow moulding for PET in 2022 with Europe’s Flexblow machines to convert Wellman’s stock preforms; and a doubling of the Uniloy extrusion blow moulding machine fleet in 2023.

For our family it is a question of legacy, to all stakeholders, but especially the 40 staff who have invested their working lives into what we have set out to achieve, and to whom we are extremely grateful. CRAIG WELLMAN Growth has been strong in all categories but especially in bottles, both extrusion and stretch blow, with many new projects delivered, including the new Mars Squeezy PET Sauce Bottles in 250ml and 500ml sizes, a stock range of bulk 2L, 3L and 4L HDPE condiment bottles for retail and food service including Woolworths private label, clarified PP squeezy sauce bottles, and hot-fill Maggi jars for Nestlé, among others. This growth has been underpinned by the solid engineering resources built over two decades and led by Craig Wellman’s 2IC, Nick Campbell, who is set to head up the business in the years to follow. According to Campbell, “applying scientific rigour to every aspect of the business, including physics, mechanical engineering and polymer science, has delivered a tool kit that has proven to be very beneficial especially for pack design”. Wellman now finds itself third

in the NSW bottle and preform market for FMCG behind Visy and Pact Group. To support the growth in all categories, especially high-volume bottles and thin-wall packaging, the company commenced efforts in 2022 to relocate into larger facilities to coincide with its milestone anniversary year. However, it has suffered numerous delays symptomatic of the difficult conditions in the industrial property market at present. Craig Wellman states, “It is definitely a challenge right now, given the demands upon us and the delays incurred, however, the enormous support we have received from our customers, suppliers, and staff to work through these growing pains together, has only hardened our resolve to step up as a balancing force in the industry. We are also reminded of our 2010 bottle market strategy, and the supply chain efficiency, of sending preforms to be blown at a customer site just before filling, instead of building larger warehouses for empty bottles and more trucks to carry them.” Wellman’s growth can also be attributed to its vision for a circular economy, and what it calls ‘Future Thinking for Sustainable Plastics’ under its trademarked banner of E-ZERO, which translates as ‘do no harm’ to the environment and, if possible, use plastic packaging to sequester carbon and improve the environmental scorecard overall. The company’s sustainability credentials to date are more than solid, from pivoting into using recycled plastics wherever possible and taking out the top awards at PIDA and internationally at the WorldStar Packaging Awards for its 100 per cent conversion of preforms and bottles to rPET. These include Colgate-Palmolive’s homecare bottles

Above: Wellman developed a new PET 500mlL squeezy sauce bottle for Mars Food using 37% less plastic than its PE counterpart. Below: Wellman introduced two-stage stretch-blow moulding in-house at in 2022 with Flexblow machines to convert its own stock preforms.

along with a world-first 100 per cent recyclable squeezy PE sauce bottle; the development of the Nestlé Hot Chockee thin-walled PP cup that uses 25 per cent less material and can now be fully recycled; developing a new PET 500ml squeezy sauce bottle for Mars Food using 37 per cent less plastic than its PE counterpart; and the development of hot fill jars and closures for Maggi sauces with 100 per cent recyclability, 30 per cent lighter weight and improved panelling performance. Craig Wellman said, “We are constantly amazed by the volume of waste that finds its way into the oceans and landfills and must remember that we are all custodians of this planet, and it is our duty to leave it in better shape than we found it. For those in the packaging industry, however, environmental citizenship is even more important because we will always have a licence-to-operate question to answer due to the visibility of packaging in the waste stream.” Wellman Packaging has been busy, too busy in fact for the anniversary party this year, but we look forward to coming together soon to raise a glass to its 50 years. ■

SMEs embed SPGs into packaging design

I

N PARTNERSHIP WITH AusIndustry, and with the support of Food South Australia, AIP developed an inaugural bootcamp event to focus on Sustainable Packaging for SMEs, and implementation of the Sustainable Packaging Guidelines (SPGs) into their operations. The objective was to not only to improve the sustainability of the SMEs packaging but to review their operations as a whole. The inaugural bootcamp was attended by 30-plus participants and from that 15 SMEs signed up to participate in the initial pilot project. The pilot program and bootcamp was such a success that a further three iterations of the Sustainable Packaging for SMEs project was rolled out nationally. Outcomes included: • 100+ SMEs participated in the program • 30+ EP facilitators supported their clients in the projects nationally • 4 bootcamps sessions were held (5 hours each) • 3000+ participants attended the educational sessions, webinars and bootcamps held by the AIP

• 40 sessions of the AIP Hour of Power were held (bespoke sessions for project participants with a packaging specialist to answer their specific questions) • 2023 Australasian AIP Pa ck a g i n g C on ferenc e Workshop – SMEs presented to share their success stories. A key focus in AIP training and workshops is to help guide SMEs to see the value of embedding the SPGs into business processes.

SO WHAT ARE THE SPGS? The Sustainable Packaging Guidelines (SPGs) are a central part of the co-regulatory framework established by the National Environment Protection (Used Packaging Materials) Measure 2011 (the NEPM) and the Australian Packaging Covenant Organisation (APCO). The NEPM and APCO state that the SPGs are to assist the design and manufacture of packaging that meets the sometimes-conflicting demands of the market, consumer protection and the environment. The 10 Sustainable Packaging Below: Dentalife looked beyond primary packaging to enact change in other areas.

Principles that make up the SPGs are: 1. Design for recovery 2. Optimise material efficiency 3. Design to reduce product waste 4. Eliminate hazardous materials 5. Use recycled materials 6. Use renewable materials 7. Design to minimise litter 8. Design for transport efficiency 9. Design for accessibility 10.Provide consumer information on sustainability The AIP has also developed a detailed checklist and worksheet for SMEs to use so that they can incrementally improve their primary, secondary and tertiary packaging, machinery and on-site waste and recycling. Small steps towards lowering environmental impacts across the entire business operations are encouraged. The results have been wide ranging with numerous businesses making valuable steps to achieve more sustainable practices. Two stand-out success stories are Dentalife and Little Big Dairy; both are testaments to the people that lead the businesses and the staff that work there.

DENTALIFE – TAKING SMALL STEPS TO ACHIEVE CHANGE Founded in 1999, Dentalife is a research and development, manufacturing and sustainability specialist of dental and infection control materials, with a manufacturing and R&D facility in Melbourne, Victoria.

CLANCY PAINE

In recent years the Australian Institute of Packaging (AIP) has been working with hundreds of SMEs to help them to better understand how to meet the 2025 National Packaging Targets and where designing sustainable packaging fits into the picture.

It was evident to the AIP education team that Dentalife has a strong ethos in the business and team. The staff members are collectively committed to playing their part in developing a sustainable future and understand their responsibilities as a manufacturer to lower their environmental impacts. The business has empowered staff to take ownership of certain packaging and wasterelated areas of the business and find more sustainable solutions. As part of the SPG training program the AIP encourages all SMEs to take a close look at their packaging suppliers and how they engage with them. The goal is to collaborate with suppliers on all sustainable design decisions so that the SME has the ability to choose the appropriate materials and packaging based on being fit for purpose, functional and offering a lower environmental impact. The AIP believes that giving the power back to the SMEs is paramount to success. Dentalife is a good example of how SMEs can successfully collaborate with suppliers to find a pathway to develop more sustainable ways of packaging products.

A key focus in AIP training and workshops is to help guide SMEs to see the value of embedding the SPGs into business processes. 14 ❙ NOVEMBER – DECEMBER 2023

Above: Little Big Dairy was the first dairy company to transition to clear lids on bottles. such as warehouses and manufacturing plants. The AIP aims to work with SMEs to help them see the bigger picture across the whole of supply chain. While waiting for industry practices to evolve, Dentalife decided to shift its focus to sourcing recycled materials and reviewing its internal manufacturing operations to identify opportunities to eliminate waste and design reuse solutions where viable. One area of the business that was identified was the daily use of label cores which were then discarded after use. Dentalife wanted to see if there was a way to return the cores to their supplier for reuse. After speaking with the supplier, a closed loop collection program was developed and is now an available service for all of its clients.

Dentalife understands that most of its end users operate in the medical and/or dental industry where single-use and disposable packaging is prevalent. Waste in the industry is often classified as clinical waste and will need to be incinerated. The business quickly realised that currently it is difficult to segregate and recover waste at the end-user stage without intervention from the wider industry, so it looked at other areas where it could enact change. All too often SMEs only consider their primary packaging when trying to meet the 2025 National Packaging Targets and forget about the opportunities within their secondary and tertiary packaging, their manufacturing processes, machinery, waste and recycling processes, and wider operations

Working with AIP, Dentalife has proven that an SME only needs to take small steps to achieve change in the business.

LITTLE BIG DAIRY CO – FIRST TO MOVE TO CLEAR MILK LIDS Founded in 2012, the Little Big Dairy Co is a family-owned dairy business based on the banks of the Macquarie River outside of Dubbo, New South Wales. The company manages milk production from start to finish, including milking, processing and filling milk bottles. While working with Little Big Dairy Co, the AIP observed the company wanted its packaging to be as sustainable as possible and had identified packaging as an area that needed improvement. The AIP guided Little Big Dairy

PIABC Approved Training Academy MEMBER

to look at all 10 SPGs, including the materials it used, material efficiencies, the ability to incorporate recycled content into its products, and the circularity of its design to ensure true recyclability. During the one-on-one sessions with Little Big Dairy, the AIP technical expert identified that transitioning the coloured lids to clear lids would ensure true circularity by design. This one design improvement saw Little Big Dairy become the first dairy brand in Australia to use clear bottle caps in place of caps using dark pigment colours, to help improve the recoverability of the material. It also introduced its milk in 10L bladders, removing more than 260,000 single-use bottles from market a year. Investment in packaging equipment has allowed them to secure its boxes with hot glue, removing tape from its packaging. Little Big Dairy followed the SPGs during the process and the checklists that were developed by the AIP helped to effectively translate to more sustainable packaging. ■ The Sustainable Packaging Design Guidelines (SPGs) are a foundational process for designing more sustainable packaging that considers all environmental impacts of the product, the packaging and the business. The AIP recommends that every business, no matter how small, should be using the 10 SPG principles in their business and encourages everyone to take small steps today. Ask the AIP how.

ccording to a report by Statista, Australia ranks fifth in the world in terms of wine production, and boasts 65 wine regions, including the Hunter Valley in NSW, Barossa Valley in South Australia, and the Yarra Valley in Victoria. Wine Australia states that the country contributes to the production of over 1 billion litres of wine annually, exports 625 million litres valued at $2.1 billion (FOB) and accounts for 441 million litres domestically. (2021-22) With wine being such a staple for most Australians, and the market dominated by locally made wine, the conversation around meeting the 2025 National Packaging Targets and redesigning packaging to adhere to the 10x Sustainable Packaging Design principles has not been lost on this industry. In fact, through the annual Australasian Packaging Innovation & Design (PIDA) awards the AIP has seen a radical shift in packaging design including more use of PET, incorporating recycled content into

Banrock Station’s eco bottle shape uses a clever cross-sectional design.

PET, the advancement in labels such as washable paper-based adhesives, innovative and sustainable secondary and tertiary packaging options to replace problematic materials such as EPS, stand up pouches for some table wines and the review of materials used in wine bladder bags. Two stand out designs from the 2023 round of the PIDA Awards were the Banrock Station eco bottle and the Wine Protector.

Banrock Station eco bottle The Banrock Station eco bottle shape has taken a smart cross-sectional design of a traditional Bordeaux wine bottle. This means that the bottle has the silhouette of a Bordeaux wine bottle face on, however, when turned to its side, it is flat. This innovative change in shape allows the same volume of wine (750ml) to be packed into a bottle that is 30 per cent more spatially efficient than it’s round, glass predecessor. By being flat, and having a long neck, the bottle stands tall and proud on retail shelves. Banrock Station’s eco wine bottle is in fact slightly taller than round glass wine bottles when placed side-by-side. The eco bottles are made from 100 per cent recycled PET, which is sourced in Australia, making them 84 per cent lighter than the average Australian round glass bottle. In addition, the bottle has a key call out on the front of pack says ‘Hey! I’m a 100 per cent recycled bottle’. The eco bottle uses an active oxygen scavenger barrier technology to offer advanced shelf-life performance over rPET with no barrier. The result is 19 to 21 months based on real-time and modelled data. The design offers significant lightweighting - the new pack is 63g, which is 84 per cent lighter than the average 400g glass bottle. The pack offers spatial efficiency as the bottle flat packs like books and means wine companies can fit up to 50

per cent more wine on an Australian pallet. The result is 1152 eco bottles vs 768 round glass bottles now on a pallet. This design feature drastically reduces freight costs, improves materials handling and transportation efficiencies, and lowers transport-related CO2 emissions. The eco bottle provides a reduction in energy and emissions through production of the material. Banrock Station stated that virgin PET outperforms glass by producing 77 per cent less GHG emissions and uses 59 per cent less energy to produce. A wonderful addition to the pack was the sustainable label selection. The label on the eco bottle increased the recyclability of the rPET bottles as it has been designed as a wash-off label solution which ensures easy separation during the industrial washing process. The label solution is available with both filmic and paper label materials made from recycled content.

Wine Protector – renewable secondary packaging The innovative Wine Protector has been developed using Woolpack technology which is made from cross bred sheep waste wool that is unsuitable for the textile industry and destined for landfill. The Wine Protector is a sustainable alternative to expanded polystyrene (EPS) shippers used to protect bottled wine from temperature and impact damage throughout the supply chain. The Wine Protector seems simple, but it is underpinned by science. It took more than a year to research and develop the proprietary fibre specifications and blend. Wine integrity can be compromised through impact damage and as little as 40°c for just two hours during transport. Wine can rapidly reach over 50°c when stored inside a car or on a mildly warm day. Such conditions can have a detrimental impact on shelf life, aesthetics, and sensory properties of the wine. The Wine Protector is made of an insulating wool sleeve used to stabilise wine temperatures below 26°c for up to 24 hours and is impact resistant to cushion and protect the wine in transit. An additional unique feature is that it comes flat packed which means the pack requires less storage than other alternatives. The design also improves materials handling and transport efficiencies and ultimately can offer significant costs savings for a business. Wineries and cellar doors are generally

space constrained making this a high value-added design feature. 900 units of the Wine Protector fit on a pallet which means less pallet movements and lower labour costs which translates to a lesser number of shipments and a lower carbon footprint. This is achieved through a compact design, along with compressing the Wine Protectors up to 50 per cent of their size, and the packs are very easy to assemble. Wine Protector has been designed to support wine growers to transport their temperature-sensitive wines in a more sustainable alternative, with all of the functionality required. It is evident that the Banrock Station eco bottle and the Wine Protector are both unique and innovative sustainable solutions that are working towards meeting the 2025 National Packaging Targets and lowering their environmental impacts. I look forward to seeing the Wine Protector being sold in liquor stores across the country in the future. The AIP is excited to see the next iteration of innovative sustainable packaging designs for the wine industry that will be entered in to the 2024 Australasian Packaging Innovation & Design (PIDA) awards; the exclusive entry point for Australia and New Zealand into the prestigious global WorldStar Packaging Awards. .
