o all Members, associates and friends of the AIP, I am writing to you regarding the webinar survey we asked you to complete late last year.

The AIP’s mission is to enhance packaging knowledge of its Members in the most relevant and timely manner.

We have been conducting monthly technical seminars since our inception over 50 years ago. We added and maintain our world standard Diploma in Packaging Technology and Certificate in Packaging over 30 years ago and today they are the benchmark of academic learning.

In recent years we introduced our range of half-day training courses to which we continue to expand each year as the demand grows. However even with this wide range of education formats, we are still not able to reach and satisfy the demands and locations of all of the Members of the Australasian packaging industry.

Technology advancements has now brought us the webinar format. To those who are not familiar with this technology, it enables a presentation across the Internet which allows for two-way discussion between the presenter and the participants. In such large countries such as Australia and New Zealand, it allows us to reach audiences in all locations and not just the major metropolitan areas.

It can be set up on most computers, tablets and smart phones with very little difficulty.

The AIP Board felt this was an excellent avenue to take packaging knowledge to a wider audience. On this basis we distributed a survey on the value of webinars to all our Members, associates and friends for input and

guidance on how you wanted us to develop this format.

Unfortunately we did not receive a very positive response to webinars going forward and if this truly reflects your level of interest, then on behalf of the Board we thank you for your time and we will move on to finding other ways of being relevant to our industry in 2014 and serving your needs.

Of those who did respond, however, there was positive feedback on using this technology to educate our industry.

It is our desire to serve the industry with relevant packaging knowledge in a format which you wish to receive it.

I wish you all well in 2014 and look forward to seeing you at our Biennial National Conference which will be held in Sydney on the 17th and 18th of June. Please mark these dates in your calendar!

2014 APPMA SCHOLARSHIP NOW OPEN comprehensive, and provides an opportunity to study the principles of packaging, packaging materials and packaging processes.

According to Mark Dingley, Chairman of the APPMA, the Annual Scholarship Program is a unique opportunity for a packaging engineer to attain a Diploma in Packaging Technology and further their education in the packaging industry.

he Australian Packaging and Processing Machinery Association (APPMA), in conjunction with the Australian Institute of Packaging (AIP), are pleased to announce that submissions are now open for the sixth annual scholarship program which will enable a packaging engineer the opportunity to complete a Diploma in Packaging Technology to the value of over $9000.

The Diploma in Packaging Technology is an internationally recognised Level 5 foundation Degree qualification that will prepare students to take responsibility for packaging operations at any level through the supply chain. The qualification is

Fritz Frenkler, the Jury Chairman of iF Design Awards 2013, talks about design having a completely new social importance over past few years in the context of it being a multi- and inter-disciplinary process.

Ralph Wiegmann, Managing Director of iF, speaks enthusiastically about the “real strokes of genius” in packaging that may “only become apparent at second or even third glance”. Not surprisingly, he comments that some packaging were so appealing that the judges were unanimous about awarding an iF label and it was exciting to see how the judges picked up the packaging, inspected it, opened it, shook it, and then even took a peek inside.

Covering some 600 pages, the book showcases award winning entries from around the world chosen by international experts.

There is a full page devoted to each project which covers and details the project itself, the creators of the project, the client and further commentary about the brief.

Packaging from countries all around the world are featured including Germany, France, South Korea, China, Taiwan, Netherlands and Russia. Unfortunately there are no projects from Australia.

The book is divided into various categories such as sales packaging, gift boxes, promotion packaging, transport packaging, packaging materials, product interfaces, game art, and print media.

OVERVIEW OF IF AWARDS: The International Forum Design (iF) was formed in 1953 with the aim of promoting industrial design. This lead to the iF design awards being introduced in 1954 for the best designs in industrial goods.

In 2013 a distinguished jury panel of 50 experts from the field of design, industry and education bestowed the 75 iF Gold Awards on many notable designs such as 3st kommunikation GmbH for their project Heraeus Geschäftsbericht 2011 from Germany, the SAMSUNG Electronics Co. Ltd. for their project Samsung OLED TV Logo from South Korea, and Alt Group for their project The Social Kitchen from New Zealand.

WPO BOARD MEETING, BARCELONA, SPAIN

T

he AIP was represented at the WPO Board meeting and WorldStars judging in Barcelona, Spain in late 2013. It is always interesting and encouraging to renew old acquaintances and meet new member countries attending these meetings from around the world. May I take this opportunity to thank the AIP Board for the opportunity to represent Australia at the Barcelona meetings.

These meetings were attended by Argentina, Austria, Australia, Brazil, China, Croatia, Czech Republic, Finland, Ghana, Hungary, Indonesia, Kenya, Netherlands, Nigeria, Tunisia, Russia, South Africa, South Korea, Spain Sweden, Singapore, Switzerland, Turkey, UK and USA. Australia was welcomed by the President and thanked for travelling great distances to be in attendance. The AIP seconded the meeting minutes of the WPO Board meeting held in Sydney in May 2013.

Members were reminded that the next meeting will be held alongside Interpack 2014 in Dusseldorf from 12–14 May. The WorldStar 2014 presentation will be held on this occasion. Members were reminded to deliver positional papers and the AIP has offered to write on: Packaging from a design perspective.

WORLDSTAR AWARDS This remains the main income for the WPO so all member countries were encouraged to become directly involved in promoting and encouraging entries from one’s own country. Member countries are to bear in mind that each member country is paid a commission for each entry from their country (Australia). Judging for 2013 took place whilst in Spain, there were 279 entries, awards will be in Dusseldorf, Germany alongside Interpack. AIP is also encouraged to advertise.

WORLDSTARS STUDENT AWARDS 2014 The next judging for WorldStars Student Awards 2014 will be hosted by Brazil and they are requesting judges from member countries, to take place in the first quarter of 2014. Member countries are encouraged to promote entries from one’s own country.

EDUCATION Packaging training sponsored by WPO has gone well this past year with courses held in India, Nigeria and Kenya. Packaging training is to be held in 2014. The AIP has taken a leading role in this and will offer courses in Ghana, Nigeria, Vietnam, China, Indonesia and Singapore.

Additional courses assisted by the WPO may be held in Turkey, Sri Lanka and India, are still to be confirmed. The AIP was thanked for their leadership and commitment to the training programs. There is continuation of courses worldwide being vetted by the Education Committee and the AIP is part of this vetting system.

The WPO is also currently obtaining data of all packaging related courses worldwide which is for inclusion on the website.

MARKETING The website has undergone major changes and the AIP is responsible for the website upgrade and maintenance.

Additional directories are to be put on the site, as well as all packaging related books, all educational programs and all tradeshows worldwide.

All member countries have received their membership certificates and are encouraged to display these at meetings, seminars, conferences, congresses, or any place where recognition can be gained. A WPO video has been created and all member countries have been

WPO News: the AIP was congratulated on being so organised in supplying news on a regular basis. They continue to always look for articles of interest and news items. Linkedin membership to WPO has grown to about 2000 and members are encouraged to join up, as it remains a good way in keeping in contact and spreading information on WPO. The AIP also has a strong Linked In group so we encourage you to join both Groups today.

SUSTAINABILITY Some great work is being done in this portfolio mainly focussing on: • Implementation of GPPS 2.0; the AIP is encouraged to promote this.

• Save Food initiative, FAO (Food & Agricultural Organisation – Rome).

• LCA update.

• Update on status in measuring sustainability.

• Sustainability award in the WorldStar Awards will have 6 criteria.

SPONSORSHIP For some time this has been an area of opportunity that has not been exploited sufficiently. The President has taken it upon himself to do something about this.

INDEPENDENT MEASUREMENT He proposed a WPO sponsorship scheme. The proposed

scheme follows the AIP sponsorship program for our National Conference and Technical Forums with Platinum, Gold and Silver sponsorship levels.

FOOD SAFETY Johannes Bergmair from Austria proposed that a working group be formed to address this important aspect. He gave a detailed proposal and ideas as to how he potentially saw this working group evolve. He wants to ensure that all corners of the globe are represented on the subcommittee. This was approved by the WPO Board and he will set up such a group of which Australia has been requested to be a part of.

GENERAL WPO is becoming more involved in countries across the globe, great education opportunities exist more now than ever before, Marketing really putting the name out in the open across all continents. The WPO is financially sound with good leadership into the future. The AIP has become an important player on this world stage where our opinion, ideas and advice constantly sought.

Design innovation Reaching consumers these days is difficult. No longer do traditional methods of advertising and marketing warrant the attention of consumers or their dollars.

Business owners and advertisers alike struggle to come up with creative ways to grab even the smallest bit of attention for their products. Creating an effective package design is one of the simplest and most cost effective ways to do this but requires ingenuity, creativity and the ability to connect with consumers, says Pierre Pienaar Ingenuity LET’S face it: consumers are not particularly open to changing their purchasing habits or experimenting with new products. Why fix it, if it isn’t broken?

When introducing your product to consumers you have to display ingenuity in your packaging design. Consumers look for packaging that is visually pleasing and representative of the actual product.

Your package should demonstrate your company’s ability to uniquely display your product through colour, size or logos.

Creativity JUST as with people, packages that are different tend to stand out. Using unusual colours, containers and catch phrases are all effective ways to catch consumers’ attention.

You can reap huge rewards by using packaging design to market the same product to multiple target groups. Product packaging can give new meaning to the same product for different consumers.

It is important to note however, that creative packaging is no substitute for a great product. You don’t want to be known for being all action and no satisfaction.

Connecting with consumers CONSUMERS will purchase products because of a perceived need for them.

Therefore your package design must demonstrate a fulfillment of a need of some sort, as well as the benefits of choosing your particular product.

Your package should elicit emotion from your consumer, whether it is

Pierre Pienaar, education coordinator with the Australian Institute of Packaging (AIP) happiness, serenity or even hunger. If there is not a feeling of excitement or necessity you can bet your product will remain on the shelf.

Consumers like to feel that a company is in touch with their specific needs and offers them something special. You must connect with your target audience.

Your package design is your product’s business card. For better or worse your packaging design will be a significant deciding factor in whether or not your product is purchased.

Sustainability SUSTAINABILITY continues to be a buzzword and has become a major factor affecting operations in packaging.

Considerations in this area are now a fact of life, with bioplastics and renewable resources such as sugar cane becoming serious participants in the market. But it seems consumers still require greater clarity around what sustainable really is.

Consumers are increasingly interested in their personal impact on the environment and are demanding more from manufacturers.

Australia’s packaging industry needs to participate seriously in coordinated and cooperative efforts around global packaging sustainability and develop some honest measurement tools for the manufacturing industry to consider.

While we wait for strong leadership in this field to come to the forefront, I challenge individuals to make sustainability a serious consideration; no matter the area of packaging in which you are involved. I challenge you to ask your company what its stance is on sustainability and what its policy on this matter may be.

In the meantime, we need to continue designing with the three Rs in

mind, namely reduce, re-use, recycle: Reduction ought to be considered in terms of light weighting and down gauging. Reduce the ullage in packs as well as reducing the flap area of the pack. This will decrease the amount of packaging material used.

Packaging designers should take into consideration potential changes in the distribution chain in order to balance package designs with the distribution environment. This will often result in good pallet utilisation.

Re-use refers mainly to domestic re-use for a range of purposes.

Packaging should have the ability to be re-used by the consumer for the same or a similar purpose, for example, woven polypropylene bags with a handle can be used as a carry bag. These bags can also be used as building materials, especially in third world countries.

Recycle in terms of using both recycled materials for packaging end products and regularly using materials that are recyclable.

Packaging should be designed to assist recycling. It should be engineered to easily compress to minimise volume where possible.

If and where practical, it should use only one material or materials which can be sorted, separated and reprocessed, using the best economically appropriate technology.

Where recycling facilities exist it should incorporate the appropriate logo to encourage consumers to recycle the package. Plastic packaging should also be clearly identified with the Plastics Coding System and look-alike packaging in different materials should be avoided.

I found it interesting that at the 2010 Soccer World Cup in South Africa, teams from Brazil, Portugal and The Netherlands wore jerseys made entirely from recycled polyester, each jersey produced from eight recycled PET bottles.

Nike sourced discarded PET bottles from Japanese and Taiwanese landfill sites and then melted them down to produce new yarn for the jerseys.

This process saves raw materials and reduces energy consumption by up to 30 per cent when compared to virgin material. Nike prevented nearly 13 million plastic bottles from going into landfill sites.

This is just one example of what companies and individuals are doing out there to assist our environment.

I would like to add another R: that of re-filling.

Supermarkets are now trialling machines that allow consumers to fill reusable pouches with fabric conditioner pumped from a 1,000-litre container directly to the laundry aisle.

What about cooking oil, fruit juice or shampoo? This could cascade to flour, sugar, cereals and so on.
