2023 Harry Lovell Award Winner Leanne Tan Dip.Pkg.Tech. MAIP CPP is presented with the 2023 Harry Lovell Award In 2006 the AIP Board of Directors, acknowledging the important role of education and training, established the Harry Lovell Award in recognition of the commitment and contribution of the late Emeritus Professor Harry P. Lovell OAM, FAIP to education and training over thirty years in the Institute, and in particular to the Diploma in Packaging Technology. The Harry Lovell Award is presented to graduates of the Diploma in Packaging Technology who have achieved exemplary results in their examinations. This award is not awarded each year and is only presented to outstanding students in packaging technology. The Harry Lovell Award has only been presented seven times since 2006 and is the most prestigious award for academic excellence in the AIP. The AIP is pleased to announce that it has been awarded again for 2023. The winner for the 2023 Harry Lovell Award is Leanne Tan Dip.Pkg.Tech. MAIP CPP, Packaging Technologist, San Miguel Yamamura Packaging Corporation, Philippines. Leanne has displayed remarkable tenacity, remained very focussed and determined to succeed and exceeded all our expectations. She has an enquiring mind that drives her to always learn beyond the course content. In an unprecedented event Leanne sat all 4 exams at once on one day. We do not believe that anyone has ever done this in the world. Not only did she sit all four exams she passed with merits and distinctions. This is an outstanding result, and certainly well deserving of the Harry Lovell Award. Prof Pierre Pienaar, FAIP, FIPSA, CPP, AIP Education Director added that “What a wonderful opportunity to celebrate Leanne’s Harry Lovell Award in person, in the Philippines infront of her boss, peers and some of the AIP team.”
18 AIP Newsletter | February 2024
“It was a privilege and a rare occurrence that we members of the AIP Executive were in Manila attending ProPak Philippines, but that as Education Director of the AIP could personally have the opportunity to personally hand the Prof Harry Lovell Award for outstanding excellence, to such a worthy winner as Leanne Tan,” “Never in the history of the AIP and certainly in the history of the Harry Lovell Award has a candidate achieved what Leanne achieved in 2022 examinations. Leanne wrote all for written exam requirements in 2 days and achieved distinctions in all 4 the examinations that she wrote. This is an unbelievable achievement and one that needs to be celebrated. It was therefore a fitting occasion to acknowledge her by having at least 3 of the AIP Executive in attendance plus a hall full of people attending Women in Packaging." "We all celebrate with you Leanne, such an occurrence is unlikely to happen for some years yet,” Prof Pienaar said.
2023 Harry Lovell Award Winner
Hi to all AIP students from Manila. A special hello to our students and AIP members who live in Asia. While our name is the 'Australian' Institute of Packaging , we get around outside Australia. This week we were back in Manila for the 6th time at ProPak Philippines. We have been a key part of the education program of this event since it started. We have a substantial and growing group of students and members based here. They are active and they are achievers as this brief note will testify. Professor Pienaar had the honour of awarding the Harry Lovell From the left – Leanne Tan Dip.Pkg.Tech. MAIP CPP: Tuti Buntaran MAIP: Nerida Kelton FAIP: Julie Ann Cuya MAIP CPP: Eunice Joy Ison AAIP. In fact, this is only the 7th time it has been awarded. Leanne did all her exams in 2 days and received distinctions for all 4. Leanne is an impatient person by her own admission. She did not stop there. Leanne has also completed her CPP – Certified Packaging Professional certification. A step we recommend to all students after they graduate. As is our practice at all major packaging events, the AIP celebrates the successful women in our industry. ProPak Philippines was no different. Let’s celebrate Leanne’s success. Let’s recognise that the AIP team is regional. Let’s help guide you on your career development plan to do the CPP certification after you graduate. As a reminder on the regional plans for the AIP team, we will be at ProPak Asia – Bangkok in June for the tenth time and ProPak Indonesia in September for the first time. This is the first time this event has been run. We will be back in Manila next February. Yes we get around sharing the knowledge and growing our team of students. Kind regards Ralph Moyle FAIP CPP Education Coordinator

Smart Packaging in an age of constant change In the fast-paced and ever-evolving landscape of consumerism, the packaging industry is undergoing a revolutionary transformation to cater to the changing needs of consumers and their lifestyles. Today, packaging has become a dynamic tool for enhancing the overall consumer experience. One of the most notable advancements in packaging is the integration of smart technologies. Beyond the conventional role of protecting products, smart packaging is taking on the responsibility of improving lives. Imagine a pill bottle that not only safeguards medication but also acts as a personal assistant, sending reminders to take pills at the prescribed times. Moreover, smart packaging extends its capabilities beyond health-related functions. It can alert consumers to the end of a product's life, helping them make informed decisions about consumption and reducing waste. This proactive approach not only adds value to the consumer experience but also aligns with sustainability goals by preventing unnecessary product disposal. The growing concern for environmental sustainability is reshaping the packaging industry. Consumers are increasingly conscious of the environmental impact of their purchases, leading to a demand for eco-friendly and sustainable packaging solutions. Packaging is not just adapting to this demand; it's becoming a proactive contributor to a greener future. Smart packaging stands at the forefront of sustainability efforts, playing a pivotal role in minimising environmental impact. Active packaging, equipped with the ability to absorb and release unwanted gases and materials, serves to extend shelf life, reducing food waste and promoting a more sustainable consumption cycle. Smart packaging has the capability to actively interact with consumers, informing them about the product's freshness and prompting them to use it before it expires, thus contributing to the reduction of items ending up in landfills. Moreover, smart packaging contributes significantly to recycling processes. It empowers consumers by providing information on the appropriate disposal method, guiding them to the correct recycling bin. During the sorting stage, the packaging's embedded intelligence allows it to be recognised, ensuring that it is directed to the right recycling stream. This not only streamlines recycling operations but significantly improves the quality of recyclates. In the realm of reusable systems, smart packaging takes on an essential role. It facilitates tracking, enabling items to be easily identified and returned, fostering a perfect circularity.
22 AIP Newsletter | February 2024
In an age marked by fake news and greenwashing, reputation and brand credibility are delicate assets. Consumers seek transparency and authenticity to make informed decisions. Packaging proves to be an effective tool by disclosing detailed information about the product's origin, authenticity, journey through the value chain, and its environmental impact. This transparency not only builds trust but also empowers consumers to make more informed and sustainable choices. Authentication features serve as a guarantee of a product's authenticity, mitigating the risks of counterfeit goods. This not only protects consumers but also safeguards the reputation of brands. Until now, packaging communicated with customers through graphic and structural design. In rare cases, alongside the sense of sight, they incorporated the sense of touch to enhance the experience. Smart packaging can engage all five senses, creating an ultimate experience with a direct impact on the subconscious. The traditional concept of packaging as a static, disposable entity is evolving into an interactive and engaging medium. Brands are leveraging technologies such as augmented reality (AR) and near-field communication (NFC) to turn packaging into an immersive experience for consumers. This interactive packaging not only captivates the audience but also serves as a unique marketing tool. It may reveal not just nutritional information but also suggest recipes or cooking tips creating new consumption opportunities. This enhances the customer experience and positions the brand as a source of knowledge and expertise. Interactive packaging, therefore, goes beyond the utilitarian and becomes a means of fostering a deeper connection between consumers and brands. In conclusion, the smart packaging integrates modern sustainable solutions, smart technologies, and interactive applications, expanding the functional, cognitive, and emotional solutions throughout the value chain, influencing our overall quality of life. Corporate Partner News Simply Cups Simply Cups Launch new ARL logo for paper cups Australians will now have access to recycling instructions on qualifying paper cups, thanks to a recent partnership between the APCO's Australasian Recycling Label (ARL) Program and Simply Cups, the largest paper cup recycling program in Australia (an initiative by Closed Loop). Simply Cups, acknowledged as an 'Alternative Destination' under the ARL program, has introduced a distinctive 'Drop Off Only' logo on qualifying paper cups. This logo directs consumers to recycle their paper cup at one of more than 1,500 collection points across Australia. The ARL is an on-pack label that provides consumers with easy-to-understand instructions about how to responsibly dispose of all parts of a product’s packaging. The evidence-based label clearly identifies if an item of packaging belongs in the kerbside recycling, general waste bin or can be recycled by following a simple instruction. Paper cups pose a significant recycling challenge in regular Australian kerbside collections due to theirPLUwaterproof S: lining. Away-from-home programs like Simply Cups are now recognised as Alternative Destinations for paper cup disposal under the ARL. 60 These programs play a crucial role in managing packaging not accommodated by regular collection systems in Australia and/or New Zealand. Following collection, Simply Cups partners with reprocessors who use innovative technologies to transform the used cups into new products like roads and lightweight concrete slabs, diverting them from landfill. 2024 ProPak Philippines Wrap Up Reprocessing Sachets into other solutions Sachets purchased in sari-sari stores are the major source of the 164 million sachets used daily in the Philippines and 52% of the 3 million tonnes of plastics wasted is sachets. Many companies are looking for ways to collect and reprocess the sachets into other products and during ProPak Philippines we were able to see some the exiting projects being undertaken in the region.
PARMS recycling facility for plastic sachets The Philippine Alliance for Recycling and Materials Sustainability (PARMS) has built a facility that will recycle plastic sachets, flexibles and rigids. The recycling facility processes more than 150 metric tons of waste per year, which are converted into products such as pallets, school chairs and other highvalue plastic products. The purpose of the facility is to keep sachets out of the waterways, dumping sites and on the streets and reprocess the material into rubbish bins, chairs, walls, ceilings and more. Commissioned in June 2023, the new extruder recycles The World Bank estimates that the Philippines loses between $790 million and $890 million in material value annually due to the disposal of singleuse plastics rather than their recovery and recycling. This represents a significant opportunity for PARMS and the industry to establish a circular economy model that prevents plastic from entering nature while maximising its value throughout its lifecycle.
44 AIP Newsletter | February 2024
Through its Zero Waste to Nature (ZWTN) Strategy and Roadmap, PARMS has successfully formulated the PARMS ZWTN Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) Program, which was officially submitted to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) on February 2, 2023. This robust EPR program has been designed specifically for implementation in the Philippines, operating under a unified Single Producer Responsibility Organisation (PRO) system.
2024 ProPak Philippines Wrap Up PARMS has proactively spearheaded the development of a comprehensive set of draft standards for waste management. These standards encompass crucial guidelines for calculating waste footprint and incorporating measures for recovery and diversion. Recognising that the transition towards a circular economy is a gradual process, PARMS emphasises the significance of ensuring that products introduced into the market eventually become part of a circular flow. By embracing a holistic approach to waste management and actively promoting sustainable consumption and production practices, they can collectively forge a path towards a more sustainable future, safeguarding our planet for generations to come.

Transforming Water Lilies in to Handbags Rolyolikha at iba pa handicrafts is a social enterprise, creating a sustainable, feasible, viable livelihood to the Philippines community. They are producing products out of natural materials such as water lily, bamboo, pandan, and turn them into beautiful products. What began using newspapers as their primary raw material transforming them into baskets, bags and lamps. In 2009, the devastation caused by Typhoon Onday, especially in the coastal area of Pila Laguna, prompted a significant shift. The aftermath of Typhoon Onday resulted in millions of water lilies clogging waterways, including the rivers and Laguna Lake. The posed a severe threat to livelihoods of farmers and fishers in the region. With support they developed training to teach the community how to make products out of water lilies. The purpose is to make recycled and modern styled containers out of Water lilies as an eco-friendly material that does not decompose over time. Instead of treating water lilies as negative environmental pollution, it can be used as a livelihood that will provide a source of income for regional communities. The water lily is dried and used to make baskets and matting for domestic use. The key to a good product is to ensure that the stalks are properly dried before being used.

Milliken presents
UltraGuard Solutions for improved barrier properties in polyethylene ™
UltraGuard™ Solutions by Milliken is a line of performance additives that brings value to polyethylene parts by improving barrier properties. It can be used in films, and in injection molded, compression molded, and blow molded parts. These additives cut by up to 50% the transmission rate of any substance (such as moisture or oxygen) that passes through the polyethylene bottle.
As an added benefit, UltraGuard Solutions also provide sustainability benefits. To meet the barrier requirements, pharma bottles typically have much thicker walls than needed from a purely functional point of view. PE resin formulated with these additives enables bottle makers to reduce the weight of these bottles by up to 20% while still providing enhanced barrier properties. These lighter-weight bottles, therefore, use significantly less material and lessen their overall impact on the environment.

White opaque HDPE bottles are commonly used for OTC (over-the-counter) drugs, prescription drugs and nutraceutical products because they have good moisture barrier and light protection properties. Barrier enhancement in HDPE pharma bottles is particularly valuable because it can help to extend the potency of drugs toward the end of their shelf life.

Save Food Competition winner 2023 SIG Foundation wins first SAVE FOOD Project competition and plans further investment
With 'Cartons for Good' the SIG Foundation leverages SIG’s know-how to reduce worldwide food losses and prevailed in the Project Competition organised by the SAVE FOOD Initiative. The project stands for the use of innovation and technology to solve one of the most pressing global problems. The SAVE FOOD Initiative sponsors a member’s project with € 20,000. In line with their vision of curbing food waste and losses worldwide, the founding members have decided to make these funds available. The SAVE FOOD Project Competition promotes solutions that contribute to reducing the 1.3 billion tons of food being lost or wasted every year. Special emphasis is placed here on supporting the players in the processing, packaging and distribution stages of the supply chain; the aim is to help them fully exploit their potential for dealing with food sustainably and responsibly. The first edition of the SAVE FOOD Project Competition saw the SIG Foundation win with 'Cartons for Good'. The project uses SIG filling technology to help people in developing countries turn their food into meals locally and extend their shelf life.

The winner will be announced as part of pacprocess MEA to be held jointly with Food Africa in Cairo from 12 to 14 December 2023. Both trade fairs form part of the interpack alliance portfolio. “The SAVE FOOD Initiative actively supports the processing and packaging industries in their key role combatting food waste and losses. The SIG Foundation shows impressively just what the industry can deliver in this respect,” says Bernd Jablonowski, Executive Director at Messe Düsseldorf and one of the SAVE FOOD initiators. “Here innovative technologies meet with local initiatives. The holistic approach ranging from the support of local agricultural businesses and the supply of meals for school children to the recycling of packaging is precisely what we seek to promote with our SAVE FOOD Competition.” The expert jury comprises members from the FAO (Food and Agriculture Organisation), the WPO (World Packaging Organisation) and interpack/Messe Düsseldorf.

Local support, global impact For the 'Cartons for Good' project the Swiss manufacturers of carton packaging and filling technology developed an innovative solution: a compact version of SIG’s industrial filling plants, which can also be transported to remote rural areas. Fruits and vegetables are processed into meals without any preservatives and filled into carton packaging. These then have a shelf life of up to nine months without refrigeration at ambient temperature. This proves a major benefit especially in regions where farmers often cannot sell their complete harvest and lack preservation possibilities. Closed-loop sustainability Farmers are paid for their surplus vegetables thereby receiving extra income. The preserved packaged food is then distributed to local schools enabling them to offer underprivileged children a hot meal daily. After consumption the packaging is collected at a local recycling plant. This ensures the materials are reused and fed back into the production cycle – a sustainable and eco-friendly solution. The pilot project in the Balia region in Bangladesh is already reaping success: in 2022 alone, some 20 tons of vegetables could be saved, 15 permanent jobs created, and 24,600 meals distributed to 180 school children. In addition, 3,000 cartons went to families and people hit by the severe flooding in Bangladesh. Commitment in Egypt At present, the SIG Foundation is planning to also roll out the “Cartons for Good” project to Egypt. 50 percent of the fruit and vegetables grown here are wasted. With prize money of € 20,000 a comprehensive study aims to find out where this project can make the biggest impact. A project shall then be developed locally – together with the local implementation partner, the Natural Resources & Climate Protection Foundation (NRCP).
About the SAVE FOOD Initiative The SAVE FOOD Initiative was founded in 2011 by Messe Düsseldorf and interpack, the world’s largest trade fair for the packaging sector and the related processing industry, and has since cooperated with, for example, the FAO and the UN Environment programme. As a global alliance, it pursues UN SDG 12.3, fighting to reduce food loss and waste. After a hiatus due to COVID-19, interpack has been involved in new projects since 2022. The goal is to create public awareness about the issue and develop counter-strategies and even solutions in concert with the economic and political sphere, society and industry. A special focus centres on innovations from the packaging industry. www.save-food.de Save Food Competition Judging The Judging of the Save Food Competition is undertaken by FAO, UNIDO and the World Packaging Organisation.
