AIP HEADED TO PROPAK ASIA 2016 FOR THE FIRST TIME

Pierre with the Australian Ambassador for Thailand, Paul Robilliard

P

roPak Asia 2016 recorded 40,893 visitors with delegations attending from 68 countries over the four day trade show. The AIP had the opportunity of being a part of the inaugural Australian Pavilion at ProPak Asia which was a resounding success in its first year. Exhibitors within the Australian pavilion – which was hosted by the APPMA - included Accupak, Adaptapack, Confoil, HMPS, Rhima, the AIP and the host of the pavilion the APPMA. Outside of the pavilion APPMA member companies Fibre King, Heat and Control and TNA also exhibited. In addition to exhibiting in the Australian Pavilion, the AIP participated in a briefing session with Austrade to better understand the growth opportunities in the Asean Region, we also had the pleasure of meeting His Excellency Paul Robilliard, the Australian Ambassador for Thailand at a networking event that was hosted in the Australian Pavilion and Pierre Pienaar was a guest speaker at not one but two seminars that were held alongside the exhibition. The AIP had an overwhelming response to their presence at the show and met with many visitors over the four days. It was evident that education and training are high on the agenda in the Asean Region. The AIP will be working on how the Institute can deliver on education within the region in the not-too-distant-future. ProPak exceeded all expectations for the Institute and we look forward to joining the Australian Pavilion again in 2017.

PROPAK ASIA 2016 REPORT By Pierre Pienaar (Prof ) Msc, FAIP, CPP

A

stonishing, encouraging and inspiring. This would best describe our recent attendance of ProPak Asia 2016 in Bangkok, Thailand where the Australian Institute of Packaging (AIP) had the privilege of having a stand on the Australian Pavilion.

We exceeded all expectations on the number of enquiries that we had on our stand during the 4 day event. There were times when exhibition visitors were queuing to talk to an AIP representative. It was a great event, as the AIP really was placed on the Asian packaging stage in terms of what it can offer its members. The majority of the enquiries were related to educational studies and opportunities of distance learning. The enquiries were from Korea, Maldives, Thailand, Singapore, Vietnam, Cambodia and China. We will see over the coming weeks and months whether enquiries result in new students studying through the opportunities that the AIP offers. Certainly on-line learning was positively received and the most popular course was the Diploma in Packaging Technology course. Many that we spoke to had been in the industry in excess of 5 years but have no formal qualification. They are therefore finding it hard to move up the chain of hierarchy in their existing company or to move to another company. The enquiries were majority from the 25 – 35 age group but we even had enquiries from folk in their sixties. Those coming onto our stand were appreciative that we had made the effort to be present and show the opportunities that the AIP can offer. ProPak Asia is Asia’s largest and most important international food, drink, and pharmaceutical processing and packaging technology event. If the AIP wants to be a player in this region then we need to be present and have a stand at this exhibition. There were over 40 000 visitors from 48 countries attending over the four days. A comprehensive list of supporting industry events were featured at the show where we could share experiences and enabling one to advance one’s knowledge. Events such as the PharmaRech Seminar 2016, Thai Packaging Centre and TISTR Conference 2016, The Department of Industrial Promotion Seminar 2016, Asia Food BeverageThailand Seminar, Food Focus Thailand Seminar and the Thai Star and Asia Star Packaging Awards 2015. In addition there was also the The 17th Food Innovation Asia Conference 2016 and Asia Drink Conference 2016 where Pierre Pienaar delivered a presentation at each of these two international conferences addressing issues affecting the Packaging industry and the impact of Packaging Design and its effect on cost. These conferences were well attended by delegates from across Asia.

AIP NEWSLETTER JULY 2016

PROPAK ASIA 2016 REPORT By Pierre Pienaar (Prof ) Msc, FAIP, CPP In some of the presentations, food technology was high on the agenda, where no less than five new food technologies are set to redefine our food and beverage industry as well as our attitude to nutrition. Aspects like Bioengineering, Foodrelated Apps, Automation, Internet, Smart machines, 3-D printing and Nanotechnology. On show at the exhibition itself there were some useful ideas and tips from machines being exhibited were: Bulk x-ray system offering high performance contaminant detection before further value is added to the product, thus saving cost. Another was a machine that enables continuous all-round inspection with increased precision for e.g. cracks, shell shaped fractures, chips, broken glass and glass splinters that are surrounded by liquid in the base of bottles. A piece of interesting equipment was the air-based purification system that enables automatic and chemical-free disinfection of surfaces and whole production areas for food and beverage manufacturing factories. High pressure processing (HPP) appears to be on the rise and is the future of food and beverage technology. This is a sterilisation method which subjects food and beverage products to intense pressure of 600 mpa for a few seconds to minutes, killing all bacteria present. It also opens opportunities for innovation, like ingredients never before used in food and beverage due to their limitation of being heat-sensitive, e.g. crustaceans, molluscs and other seafood. Packaging componentry trends observed was the new closure for the edible oil market delivering both cleanliness and functionality. This closure is unique as a flip top press-on closure. In the pharmaceutical sector it was observed that the trends were that blister packaging is certainly becoming more popular, due mainly to efficiency, safety, hygiene and quality. Nano-technology will certainly present some new opportunities in enhancing the functionality of pharmaceutical packaging. For example 3D-printed electronics that can read temperature information. More emphasis will be placed on precision labelling and coding for traceability purposes. In conclusion, a rewarding and inspiring 4 days where my take-home focus to optimise efficiency in packaging solutions would be: • Maintain basic functionality. • Support brand value and packaging. • Communicate the value of sustainability. • Packaging solutions that assist manufacturers reduce costs.

SKIN-TIGHT SOLUTION FOR SAVING FOOD 2016 WINNER RETAIL CATEGORY

S

ealed Air’s sustainable vacuum skin solution for Don KRCs So Tender pork range won top honours in the retail category of the Save Food Packaging awards. The inaugural presentation of the Save Food Packaging awards took place in Melbourne on 1 June at the AIP National Conference gala dinner.

Sealed Air’s Alan Adams explains that the carbon footprint of 1kg of meat is 370 times greater than the package used to protect it, making it vital to maximise product protection.

The two categories were retail and food services, and in the retail category the winner was Sealed Air’s Cryovac Darfresh packaging for Don KR Castlemaine’s [George Weston Foods] So Tender fresh pork range.

Previously GWF used Modified Atmosphere Packaging (MAP) for its fresh meat, but the switch to Darfresh has doubled the shelf life...

Sustainable solutions for fresh meat are in high demand. With all of the resources invested in producing fresh proteins (meats), prolonging freshness is a high priority.

“Shelf life extension is critical for retailers and for consumers,” he says.

FRUIT CUP HELPS SAVE FOOD THROUGH PACKAGING 2016 WINNER

FOOD SERVICES CATEGORY

B

rand owner SPC Ardmona topped the food services category of the Save Food Packaging Awards with its ProVital easy-open portioncontrol fruit cup.

Under government instruction, NSW HealthShare, in partnership with Arthritis Australia and Georgia Tech Research Institute, began work to improve the accessibility of portion control packaging within the healthcare sector.

According to the company, healthcare food waste is as high as 30 per cent in the hospital setting, much higher than other foodservice environments.

The need for improvements in accessibility are in response to factors such as Australia’s ageing population, the need to reduce food wastage in hospitals and improving nutritional standards within hospitals.

“High levels of plate waste contribute to malnutritionrelated complications in hospital, and there are also financial and environmental costs,” a spokesperson said. “Packaging accessibility has been identified as a key issue contributing to rates of poor patient nutrition within hospitals in Australia, where it is estimated that up to 40 per cent of patients experience some form of malnourishment.”

This work resulted in the requirement for all portion control packs to have an Initial Scientific Review (ISR) Accessibility Rating, to predict what percentage of the population can open the product without assistance and to be eligible for use in New South Wales public hospitals... hat another memorable occasion for the Australian Institute of Packaging which was represented at this WPO Board meeting and WorldStars presentation by Michael Grima and Pierre Pienaar. Not only are these meetings of value to the greater packaging industry in Australia but globally. There is lots of networking happening and it is always interesting and encouraging to renew old acquaintances and meet new member countries attending these meetings from around the world. May I take this opportunity to thank the AIP Board for opportunity to represent Australia at these Budapest meetings. These meetings were attended by Argentina, Austria, Australia, Brazil, China, Croatia, Czech Republic, Finland, Germany, Hungary, India, Kenya, Latvia, Netherlands, Nigeria, Norway, Russia, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, UK and USA. The WPO continues to be financially sound with education portfolio taking a priority in relation to funds for training being spent in developing countries. WORLDSTARS This remains the key area of Marketing and income for the WPO. All member countries are encouraged to become directly involved in promoting and encouraging entries from one’s own country. The WorldStar Competition is one of the major events of the World Packaging Organisation (WPO) and is the pre-eminent international award in packaging. WorldStar illustrates the continual advancement of the state of packaging design and technology and creates a living standard of international packaging excellence from which others may learn. The WorldStar Competition is the main revenue source for WPO and its success is an important component in financing our global packaging training programmes. On 26 May 2016 winners of the WorldStar 2016 awards gathered at the RaM Colosseum, Budapest, Hungary to receive their WorldStar Awards. VALE ANNABELLE TAN

W

hat a privilege for me to have known Annabelle. What a very special person Annabelle was. In her role as company owner of Brite Koncept, as 1st Vice President of the Asian Packaging Federation and in her role as Chairman of the Packaging Council of Singapore (PCS), she led by example and never feared her responsibility. She brought out the best in those with whom she associated; both in her business and in the global packaging arena which is where I came to know her. She certainly knew what she wanted to achieve and Brite Koncept is testimony to that. Annabelle was a busy lady, always perfectly groomed. Well dressed and with her mind always racing ahead, she still made you feel so good. Annabelle simply could not sit still. From the first time I met her back in 2011, I knew there was a good friendship between our countries, the friendship grew and Annabelle was always the perfect host at our numerous meetings over the years.

I loved our lunches together at Changi International Airport whenever I was passing through Singapore. She always made time for her World Packaging Organisation (WPO) colleagues. She was a lovely presence at our WPO bi-annual meetings somewhere in the world. The last time we (WPO) were with Annabelle was in October 2015 with the Indian Institute of Packaging in Mumbai celebrating their golden jubilee and Annabelle had her usual warm, smiling face through that week, always encouraging, always friendly and always the same. Unfortunately she could not be present at our recent WPO gathering in Budapest in May 2016 and her presence was noticeably missed. Annabelle made a difference in the lives of others, certainly in her own company and in the global packaging field where she had many friends who held her in very high esteem. I recall being invited to speak at a PCS conference in 2015. The attention to detail that she brought to the event coupled with her astute focus on ensuring that her speakers were seen to and looked after, was wonderful to see and experience. She inspired those at the conference and helped them connect with others. Her humility, kindness, zest for life is something that we on the WPO Board will miss. Annabelle’s business acumen was highly respected by all in the World Packaging Organisation. She will be sorely missed by her WPO colleagues. Not only have we lost a friend, but Singapore has lost a true ambassador who was always so proud of her country. May she rest in peace. WORLDSTAR AWARD WINNERS ANNOUNCED

00 of the 194 winners of the 2016 WorldStar Packaging Awards, the most important and global packaging competition in the world, organised by WPO (World Packaging Organisation – www.worldpackaging. org), were awarded in a gala ceremony in Budapest, Hungary, in the same week (May 22-26) of WPO 96th Board Meeting, the first of the year. Both the meetings and the Award ceremony were organised by local WPO member, CSAOSZ, Hungarian Association of Packaging and Materials Handling. The 2016 edition of WorldStar Packaging Awards received a total of 293 entries from 34 countries. Japan was the leader with 31 entries and 13 winners in the competition. China and Turkey participated, each, with 23 packaging projects; China had 14 winners and Turkey 13, followed by India with 22 entries and 10 WorldStars. The UK took the most awards, with 15 winning entries out of 18 entries. Besides the normal categories – Beverages, Electronics, Food, Health and Beauty, Household, Luxury, Pharmaceutical and Medical, Other, Point of Sale and Transit – there were awarded projects in special categories like President´s Award, Sustainability, Marketing and WorldStar Student Award. This year the Student Award inaugurated a new category entitled the Save Food Student Packaging Award that registered 12 entries. WPO created this new category due to its support to the Save Food Initiative, from Messe Düsseldorf and FAO (Food and Agriculture Organisation). “The idea is to encourage students to develop new solutions on packaging preventing food waste.

The project presented can be new. That means it does not need to have previously run for a national award”, explains Thomas Schneider, President of WPO. According to WPO´s Sustainability Vice President, Johannes Bergmair, from Austria, “Save Food is a topic related to the whole supply chain. And there are many ways and technologies to work on, like logistics, “farm to table”, transcontinental routings, transit refrigeration, storage conditions, shelf life extension, product handling, and more. Packaging is just one of them and it is the key element that WPO will focus on”. This new category of WorldStar Student Award only recognises packaging solutions that could reduce food waste. Both Student Award and Save Food Student Award had three winners each. According to Matthias Seyfang, president of Victorinox Fragrances and winner in two categories - Health & Beauty and Luxury - and Gold winner in the Marketing Award with the packaging of the perfume Victorinox Ella, “I was really impressed by the World Packaging gala ceremony! Every detail was professionally and perfectly organised. The content and process of the evening, the individual interviews, the dinner with excellent food and beverages all in a beautiful and elegant setting. With this award, WPO clearly inspires innovative packaging technology, as well as motivation, education and creativity of students. The winners of all categories of WorldStar 2016 can be viewed at www.worldstar.org and WPO webpage www. worldpackaging.org. The entries to WorldStar Packaging Awards 2017 are now open and end by 14 October 2016. The online registration can be done at www.worldstar.org

ARE THERE REALLY PEOPLE GOING WITHOUT FOOD IN AUSTRALIA? Yes there are, but hunger is largely a hidden social problem and many victims suffer in silence. Each year two million people rely on food relief – around half of them are children. That’s one in every ten Australians in need. Despite almost two decades of economic growth nearly a quarter of Australians still live in low economic resource households and 10% live in actual poverty. The prices of essentials like food, health, education, housing, utilities and transport have climbed so much in recent years that people who are already struggling are susceptible to sudden bill shock and financial disadvantage. The current economic climate means people are turning to charity who would never have dreamed of seeking such support in the past. So it’s not just traditionally vulnerable groups such as the homeless seeking food relief, but also the aged, single parents and the working poor. Children, a casual worker or an elderly couple could be going hungry in any given street. When bills have to be paid, food becomes a discretionary item. Some statistics about the unlucky people in our lucky country: 105,000 PEOPLE ARE CURRENTLY HOMELESS, 2.2 MILLION AUSTRALIANS LIVE IN POVERTY, 10.9% OF CHILDREN LIVE IN POVERTY, 1 IN 4 PENSIONERS LIVE IN OR CLOSE TO POVERTY.

INDUSTRY PACKS 1250 HAMPERS FOR FOODBANK IN 2015

I

n 2015 over 160 members of the AIP, APPMA, SCLAA and QSCLC, spent their annual Christmas party for the sixth consecutive year with a twist. The members spent the day packing a record 1250 hampers, for Foodbank to distribute to those in need at Christmas; many of whom are without employment, families with young children and living on the poverty line.

The 1250 Foodbank Hampers project is a culmination of twelve months of work, over $140,000 worth of goods raised to go inside the hampers and generous support from many companies across the country who assisted with the goods collection. The 2015 hampers were worth over $120 each and were made up of food and personal hygiene products. In 2015 we added an additional 350 x packs for ladies and 100 x packs for nominated charities, with an additional value of $44,000. In six years the AIP, in conjunction with the APPMA, the SCLAA and the QSCLC, have packed 4300 hampers to the value of over $541,000. Nominate your company, your social club or even your family and friends to help collect or purchase items, or even donate funds towards 1000x items from Toothpaste, Toothbrushes, Shampoo, Soap, Deodorant, Tinned Food, Rice, Pasta, Razors to name a few. Help us to make Christmas a brighter time for those in need. If you would like to help with the 2016 Foodbank Hampers Project please email info@aipack.com.au today

PACKAGING FOR SUSTAINABILITY Editors: Verghese, Karli, Lewis, Helen, Fitzpatrick, Leanne (Eds.) The packaging industry is under pressure from regulators, customers and other stakeholders to improve packaging’s sustainability by reducing its environmental and societal impacts. This is a considerable challenge because of the complex interactions between products and their packaging, and the many roles that packaging plays in the supply chain. Packaging for Sustainability is a concise and readable handbook for practitioners who are trying to implement sustainability strategies for packaging. Industry case studies are used throughout the book to illustrate possible applications and scenarios. Packaging for Sustainability draws on the expertise of researchers and industry practitioners to provide information on business benefits, environmental issues and priorities, environmental evaluation tools, design for environment, marketing strategies, and challenges for the future. Two of the authors Dr Karli Verghese and Dr Helen Lewis are Fellows of the Australian Institute of Packaging (AIP).
