AIP welcomes 3x new CPP's
The AIP would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Sefah Usmani AAIP, CPP; Dr Johannes Bergmair MAIP, CPP and Shira Rosen MAIP, CPP on successfully achieving the Certified Packaging Professional (CPP) designation. The CPP program has been accepted as the global recognition as a packaging professional and therefore the CPP designation has now become the leading mark of excellence internationally and a must-have recognition of industry proficiency and achievement for packaging professionals.
1. How long have you been in the industry? What are your areas of expertise?
Sefah: I have been working in the packaging industry for around 10 years. My experience is working with the Metal Packaging Companies catering to the companies in the business of packing Food as well non-food sectors.
Johannes: I started as project associate and PhD student in OFI packaging institute in July 2000 - so nearly 23 years! My expertise is more on food/pharmaceutical packaging. I deal a lot with food contact materials (legislation), hygiene management systems and quality management (e.g. packaging specification). As World Packaging Organisation (WPO) General Secretary I’m also proud of my international connections in the field of packaging business.
Shira: I began my journey in packaging in 1993 at Unilever, which means I am now completing 30 years in the field, and I still have a strong passion for packaging and continue to learn new things every day. After 7 years at Unilever, I moved to the Strauss Group, where I became the head of the packaging development department for 18 years. During my tenure at international food and beverage companies, I was exposed to a wide variety of products and needs, worked with most of packaging materials and technologies, which has given me expertise in developing packaging for this industry. In recent years, I have held the position of chairperson of the Israeli Packaging Institute, and I have also opened my own consultancy company - www.packtech.co.il - which specialises in sustainability, innovation, and efficiency in packaging. Through these roles, I have been exposed to new fields and many startups in particularly on sustainable and smart packaging that enhances and expands the role of packaging in our lives.
I also enjoy sharing my knowledge through teaching in the Academy, as well as conducting trainings and speaking at conferences.
2. What made you apply for the Certified Packaging Professional (CPP) Designation?
Sefah: I decided to enrol in the FPT course and then to apply for CPP Designation in order to broaden my knowledge about Packaging.
Johannes: Well my friends in WPO pushed me a little bit, to be true. It simply was a bit awkward that I didn’t had my CPP yet. I think in the global packaging community the CPP is a recognition that you have a high level of packaging knowledge.
Shira: I decided to apply for the CPP designation following a WPO board meeting where the CPP Designation was presented. I thought it would be challenging and interesting to pursue and could open up new opportunities for me.
3. How important is attaining the CPP designation to you as an individual?
Sefah: It is a very important recognition and will help to keep me motivated and always focus on the continuous development.
Johannes: Personally I simply wanted to have it - as so many of my friends in the WPO also have attained this designation. The CPP designation is a door-opener - e.g. you can only work as WPO trainer if you have a CPP.
Shira: It is an honour to be acknowledged as a globally recognised packaging professional, and it is a valuable marketing tool for new clients who are not familiar with my experience. Being a part of a professional community within the field opens up many opportunities such as new collaborations, facilitates knowledge sharing, and keeps one updated on the latest developments in the field.
4. How important is the CPP designation for the greater recognition of people in the packaging industry?
Sefah: It is a very important recognition for the individuals working in the packaging industry and those in the industry should plan to get the certification.
Johannes: It is simply a unique program - worldwide. If on global level you want to show your high level of packaging knowledge it is through CPP only. I don't know any other certifications scheme known that widely and recognised by all relevant players.
Shira: I believe that being a professional in the packaging field requires a deep understanding of all regulations, materials, technologies, and their influence on the entire value chain. The CPP designation verifies a broad and in-depth understanding of the packaging field and distinguishes real professionals. The importance of packaging is not widely known yet, and there is an opportunity to promote professional training and increase professionalism in the field. As the chairperson of the Israeli Packaging Institute, I would certainly implement the vision of the CPP designation.
5. Were there any new learnings or takeaways that you gained from the experience?
Sefah: One should always have the eagerness to gain knowledge. It really helped me to have the knowledge about other packaging materials as well.
Johannes: If you think - even after more than 20 years experience - you know everything in packaging technology, you just show, that you haven’t understood the world of packaging at all. Packaging is such a big and complex field of knowledge; and changing permanently. So I was more than happy to update my knowledge on transport packaging and the design process through my CPP designation.
Shira: Studying for the CPP test refreshed my knowledge and sharpened my insights, which I later applied in my work and training. Additionally, the on-going activities of the IOPP and AIP keep me updated with interesting webinars.
6. What next for your career?
Sefah: To further add value to any organisation I am working with my skills, knowledge and experience.
Johannes: Thank you. I’m happy at the moment. But with the CPP in my pocket I know, that many things would be possible (if I just had some time for it.
Shira: I would like to expand my consulting activities and training to additional countries. Specifically, I am considering establishing an on-line packaging academy, with the goal of obtaining recognition through the Certified Professional Development (CPD) points than come through the CPP program globally.

"Re-certification is important to me because with age comes experience, with connections comes knowledge, with knowledge, the possibilities are endless in pursuit of being a true expert," Wilsen.

Food waste vs packaging waste: Striking a balance
How should the industry balance the critical - and occasionally competing - aims of reducing food waste and minimising packaging waste? AIPIA’s communications director, Andrew Manly, gives his thoughts in our latest opinion piece.
Attending ProPak Asia last week in Bangkok – now a major event for the region with 1000 exhibitors and 40,000 plus visitors – l was struck by just how much debate is going on about food security/safety and the means of achieving it. Of course, there was plenty on sustainable packaging, zero emissions, better packaging design and climate change as well, and even our own conference on the digitization of packaging in SE Asia.
But attending the Global Packaging Forum, which is organised by the Australian Institute of Packaging, there was a clear message that Active & Intelligent Packaging technologies are an under-utilised resource in the fight to save food and create a more balanced approach to the whole issue.
The AIP’s executive director Nerida Kelton, who is also the World Packaging Organisation’s VP responsible for Sustainability and Saving Food, showed several examples of smart packaging solutions that are already helping to save food waste in the ASEAN region.
Some interesting facts emerged which explain reasons for what appears to be a rather haphazard approach to the saving food packaging debate. Kelton cited research from Friends of Champions 12.3, a network of businesses and international organisations that is supporting progress towards achieving the UN’s Sustainable Development Goal Target 12.3 by 2030.
It shows that only 12% of countries globally have food loss waste reduction targets. While the FLW countries include most of the ‘biggies’ such as the USA, EU, and China, the gaps are striking because they are in the places where food waste has the most impact.
Other research undertaken for AIP showed that approximately 30% of stakeholders they questioned are unwilling to redesign a product’s packaging to save on food waste. Industry will only act on this if it does not increase costs. Additionally, the greatest perceived barriers to the adoption of safe food packaging were that it adds cost and time to production, and companies lack the resources to implement the changes.
Given the amount of resource being thrown in every direction towards creating alternatives to plastics packaging – often the best packaging material from the point of view of food safety – it would seem rather churlish to assume that there is a ‘lack of time and money’ to implement the best solution for a package that actually reduces food waste (which has a proven, massive impact on the environment) but it’s okay to eliminate a piece of plastic which has a tiny impact.
Single Use Plastics reduction is as high on the agenda in Asia as in any other region. Bans on SUP bags have been implemented in China, Thailand and parts of Indonesia. But l believe that some formats of SUPs, such as sachets containing food and supplements, rehydration salts for example, have a valuable place in delivering necessary products to people who cannot afford to buy multiples or bulk purchases.
Even the humble sugar and ketchup sachets do at least keep the product in usable and edible condition until it is consumed. I fear that those who criticise such packs are really not looking beyond the pack to see real life in action.
It is good to see so much attention being paid to achieving a balanced approach to the global waste issue. But it is also frustrating that some companies are choosing to ignore the solutions Smart Packaging can offer to help them save food and packaging.
However, Nerida Kelton is an optimist and sees clear evidence of greater adoption of these and other solutions, such as tried and tested barrier films like Cryovac, to reduce food waste. And the speakers at our conference: Avery Dennison, SEE (Sealed Air), Cleantech & Beyond, GS1, Scantrust and SmartGlyph are all laser-focused on the opportunities that continue to expand and develop for these solutions both in SE Asia and other markets, This article was created in collaboration with AIPIA (the Active and Intelligent Packaging Industry Association). For a full update on active and intelligent packaging, come along to the AIPIA World Congress (co-organised by Packaging Europe) in Amsterdam on 14-15 November. The only smart packaging event covering the entire technology spectrum, the World Congress is a meeting place for the global active and intelligent packaging industry where brand owners, innovators, and other stakeholders can network and see and discuss the latest trends and innovations. Register to attend here.
As PROPAK Asia 2023 celebrated its 30th Anniversary from 14 to 17 June 2023 in Bangkok, the World Packaging Organisation (WPO) enjoyed a most successful presence and participation opportunity. We had an eye-catching stand, prominently positioned with ample space for liaison with both member countries and industry representatives. The key success was undoubtedly the Innovation Stage. Here WPO offered a 4-day speaking program covering a wide range of topics that ensured maximum benefit to attendees. Speakers hailed from as far afield as Brazil and Lebanon to closer neighbours, including Australia and Singapore with welcome involvement from Thai delegates.
Topics included: Materials in Packaging, Correct Use of Materials, Sustainability and Trends in Packaging, Recycling and Content, Agro Industries, as well as Meat and Poultry Packaging, Renewables, SMART Packaging, Greenwashing and, finally, Save Food. Presenters ensured they not only shared a local perspective but included the international current information on the relevant topics. These sessions were packed to capacity each day and gratefully received by delegates.
The ample proportion of the WPO pavilion (generously provided by Informa) allowed us to host a constant flow of visitors and to promote

the purpose and global services of WPO. Our organisation was well represented by WPO Board members plus the following executive members: Pierre Pienaar (President); Luciana Pellegrino (President-elect and VP Marketing); Soha Atallah (VP Exhibitions/ Conferences, and also the WPO Coordinator for the prestigious WPO WorldStar Awards Program), Nerida Kelton (VP Sustainability/ Save Food); Henky Wibawa (VP Education); Global Ambassadors: Hiroko Akieda and Chakravarthi AVPS. Included in the WPO representatives was the UNIDO member on the WPO Board: Aleksa Mirkovic.
WPO @ Propak Asia 2023
On WPO stand too were WorldStar Awards being show-cased by numerous recent 2023 winners and being shown to the public for the first time since the winners received their trophies in May this year. The WorldStar Awards is the highly regarded and valued, singular global packaging design competition. Some winners, who were unable to attend the gala event in Dusseldorf in May, received their trophies at ProPak Asia. The excellent location of the WPO stand allowed winners to be seen and recognised.
This year’s ProPak Asia was bigger and better than previous years. The 51,000 attendees relished the face-to-face contact and were grateful for the education opportunities offered by the WPO at this event. WPO is pleased to partner with ProPak Asia. WPO’s participation is a win-win for all parties involved. While WPO increases the strength of its Asian relationships at an event like this, ProPak Asia benefits from the global presence, network, and intentions of WPO to ensure that the fourteen-country exhibition enjoys an international feel. The WPO guarantees up-todate, international speakers will be included in the ProPakAsia program into the future.
The challenge for the WPO and ProPak Asia is make 2024 even more exciting and impactful. Overwhelmingly, WPO wants to use such opportunities to reassure all participants that they have a global organisation who can support them in their daily challenges through networking opportunities or through education programs to upskill their employees. A big thank you to ProPak Asia, as well as to the international contingent who made the effort and took the time to attend the biggest Packaging Exhibition in South East Asia.

CSIRO sets out roadmap for future food systems
Changes are needed now if Australia’s food systems –spanning the entire food pipeline from production to consumption and waste management – are to be resilient, sustainable, equitable, and healthier in the future, according to a new roadmap released today by CSIRO. An 18-month collaboration between CSIRO and nine partners from government and industry has culminated in the roadmap Reshaping Australian Food Systems . One of the nine partners was the Australian Institute of Packaging (AIP).
Lead economist and agriculture and food lead, CSIRO Futures, and one of the report's lead authors, Dr Katherine Wynn told Food & Drink Business, the thinking around reshaping food systems is driven by a number of challenges including disruption to supply chains, increasing input costs, and labour shortages.
In his keynote at The Australian’s Global Food Forum earlier this month, federal industry minister Ed Husic said, “We live in a time of international conflict and tension, energy shortages, climate change, impacting on global food supply chains.
I’m well aware of the impact of natural disasters, as many of us in the community are. And other factors such as input costs, labour shortages that are having a broad ranging impact on what you do.
“It’s why getting Australia’s food systems right is so important, not just today, but obviously in the future.”
The roadmap sets out five focal areas:
• Enabling equitable access to healthy and sustainable diets;
• Minimising waste and improving circularity;
• Facilitating Australia’s transition to net zero emissions;
• Aligning resilience with socioeconomic and environmental sustainability; and
• Increasing value and productivity.
“It can be tricky to get a scope together, so we intentionally kept it broad, with the five focal points acting as an anchor," Wynn said.
CSIRO executive director, Future Industries, Kirsten Rose added, “Australia’s food systems currently support an estimated 70 million people
Reshaping Australian Food Systems
across the nation and through our export markets so it’s critical those systems are robust enough to meet future needs.
“This roadmap represents a collective approach to tackling some of the biggest challenges facing the security and health of our food."
“Having a mix of stakeholders like we did; meant we could take a whole of system approach. The issues around our food systems are systemic, so it needs a systemic approach. We took a lens to the entire food value chain and its many interacting parts,” Wynn said.
The partners for the Australian roadmap were:
• Australian Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry;
• Australian Department of Health and Aged Care;
• Queensland Department of Agriculture and Fisheries;
• Tasmanian Department of Natural Resource and Environment;
• VicHealth;
• Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ);
• FoodBank Australia;
• The Australian Institute of Packaging; and
• Austrade.
CSIRO sets out roadmap for future food systems
“There were also statistics, particularly around food security, that we all found shocking. In the last 12 months 33 per cent of Australian households have experienced food insecurity,” she said.
Foodbank Australia general manager Sarah Pennell told Food & Drink Business being one of the nine partners was fascinating and a privilege.
More than 120 stakeholders from across the country took part in preparing the roadmap, through interviews, focus groups, and submissions, to ensure the roadmap had a comprehensive look at food systems and how they interact across the board with wider societal systems.
One of the nine partners was the Australian Institute of Packaging (AIP). AIP executive director Nerida Kelton said roadmaps such as this are important to the industry, and as a stakeholder in food and beverage manufacturing, the AIP could contribute.
“Because it was themed around sustainability and productivity, we wanted to ensure there was a balanced approach to the food waste and packaging targets. If we’re looking to the future, we need to have balanced discussions about the impacts of both. The roadmap takes them into account and how they should be embedded in the business of all food businesses,” Kelton told Food & Drink Business.
Wynn said there were similarities across the stakeholders as well as friction points.
“There is a lot of hope around research, innovation, policy, infrastructure, and investment, and that we can reshape our food system to be more resilient. But there are lots of different points of view and that when thinking about systems, there are trade-offs for multiple objectives to be met.
“What was great to see was identifying them and articulating them. Then we can see what our shared values are and gain a better understanding about what is sustainable,” Wynn said.
The 'loud issues' across all stakeholders were climate change, supply chain, rising input costs, and the cost of nutrition.
“Being in the food relief sector our view can be quite focused and specific, so to be in a room with a lot of very smart people taking a really broad picture of an issue and then getting a picture of the interconnectedness meant it was a real privilege to be involved,” Pennell said.
Pennell said her role was the be the “voice of the vulnerable”.
“We have an enviable food system but there are lots of challenges, which are only likely to increase. We have to make sure that when looking at food system resilience both those that can pay for their food and those that can’t are taken into account.
“We currently have half a million households going without enough food on any given day, that’s a significant portion of the population that needs consideration. Solutions can’t make their lives harder or push more people into insecurity and vulnerability,” Pennell said.
Husic said, “Researchers developing new products and processes, tackling this huge issue of food waste. Foodbank estimates we probably waste 8 million tonnes of food in this country, a year, of which 70 per cent still edible. Finding new ways to work together on that, hugely important. We have got smart people in this country, great businesses who are open to new opportunities, big problem solvers.”
Kelton said that because the roadmap was exploring innovations and new technologies, the AIP wanted to make sure packaging, sustainable packaging, and the ability to incorporate intelligent packaging into the food system were discussed.
Indeed, Wynn told Food & Drink Business that one the interesting research projects in the roadmap looked at improving smart intelligent packaging design, to help control food waste by being able
CSIRO sets out roadmap for future food systems
to monitor food quality, managing food to have a good shelf life, and the right physical environment to store food in terms of temperature and humidity to reduce emissions, improve shelf life and storage.
“In addressing the challenges around the amount of food waste, stakeholders made specific note that we need more investment in production and manufacturing capabilities and then coordination across the supply chain to identify and redistribute those by-products effectively,” Wynn said.
The renewable bio-commodities pilot plant in Mackay was another example – and a case study in the roadmap – about taking biomass feedstocks and turning it into biofuels, green chemicals, and feedstocks for precision fermentation and plantbased meats.
Pennell said, “ More Aussies are becoming insecure, so when the cost-of-living gets a shock, it is the people already under stress who suffer first, suffer then most, and take the longest to recover. We need a better system that is going to cost money and resources and a question of who can afford it and who can’t.
“This isn’t just a burden for the food system either, it’s about the economy, the welfare system, social supports and more. In this case I was making sure the future of our food system doesn’t throw even more people into insecurity.”
“Working with CSIRO, the government and other agencies involved made me realise the interdependencies and moving parts on this issue. We will only find solutions if there is more communication and more collaborative efforts.”
Wynn said the roadmap looks at opportunities, research priorities, and policy, infrastructure, and investment actions but does not assign responsibility for their delivery.
“We want to see the report motivate discussion and consensus around broad objectives for our food system. To date, there has been a lack of a whole of system response and the roadmap has gone some way to address that,” she said.
Husic said, “No country has got a greater reputation or a higher reputation for producing premium, safe, sustainable food than our country and we need to build on that. We cannot sit on our hands or rest on laurels. We have to keep investing in innovation and building resilient food systems well into the future.”

Choice Energy Partner News: No Respite from Energy Prices this Winter
As we head into winter and a new financial year there is a lot of media noise and, understandably, apprehension from business owners about what they can do to combat rising energy costs and what the federal budget announcements mean for their business.
After months of speculation, we finally know for certain how much power prices will increase in July and August for small businesses, and as expected, it is going to be an enormous price increase - anywhere from 14% to 25% depending on the state.
Choice Energy is here to inform, empower and guide your members and customers through this tricky period.
We are doing this in two key ways:
1. Minimise Bill Shock Energy Check
Choice Energy is encouraging all member businesses to undertake an energy review to minimise bill shock.
If businesses don't take action, they could be paying a lot more for electricity in the coming financial year, so it's in the best interests of your members to be on top of this.
2. Webinar: Minimise Energy Bill Shock & Tackling Wholesale Volatility for Businesses
Next month, Choice Energy is running a webinar , where we'll cover:
• Default market offer increases and how to minimise impacts for small business.
• State-by-state wholesale market volatility and insights for negotiating large-market energy contracts.
• Revised government tax incentives and funding for businesses wanting to reduce their reliance on grid power through solar - without coming up with a budget.
We strongly encourage all partners to spread the word and get your members engaged!
Finally, we also want to extend a thanks to all partners who have hosted us for events over the last few months, taking the the team from Tasmania to the Gold Coast and plenty of spots scattered in between. Each event has been brilliant and we look forward to engaging more with your members through faceto-face events.
