Latest Certified Packaging Professional (CPP) Graduate

T

e AIP asked the latest Certified Packaging Professional (CPP), Suzy Taguiam h AAIP, CPP, Packaging Development Manager, BMX a few questions about her career, packaging education and why the Certified Packaging Professional (CPP) designation is so important for the industry…

Q1: How long have you been in the industry? What are your areas of expertise? Suzy: I have worked in different multinational FMCG companies for the last 20 years. Most of this time was spent working as a hands-on engineer involved in diagnosing and anticipating potential issues related to product, process, and packaging as they relate to design, specification, equipment, and material interface. My areas of expertise are innovation, problem solving and continuous improvement of packaging, equipment, and processes through application of engineering concepts, material science, experimental design, and statistical methods. As a packaging professional I am responsible for managing activities for the design, development, and implementation of packaging for NPD, sustainability, and renovations projects.

Suzy Taguiam AAIP, CPP Packaging Development Manager BWX

Q2: What made you apply for the Certified Packaging Professional (CPP) Designation? Suzy: The primary reason I applied for the CPP Designation is because I wanted an international certification program that could evaluate my competency and proficiency as a packaging professional. Committing to attain this global recognition also demonstrates my passion and dedication to building expertise in all areas of packaging. Q3: How important is attaining the CPP designation to you as an individual? Suzy: I decided to make the CPP designation the focal point of my packaging career since learning of its rigorous requirements. When IoPP informed me that I passed in the upper percentile I felt extremely happy and proud. Achieving CPP has elevated my confidence that I possess the valuable packaging technology knowledge, experience, and skills to be successful in the packaging industry. Q4: How important is the CPP designation for the greater recognition of people in the packaging industry? Suzy: To date, only 2000+ packaging professionals have attained CPP status globally and for good reason - the requirements needed to be certified are stringent and not easily attainable. The process is like going through the eye of a needle but once an individual gains CPP designation it provides greater recognition since the industry recognises it as a commitment to excellence in the packaging profession. Q5: Were there any new learnings or takeaways that you gained from the experience? Suzy: As public attention to environmental issues continue to grow and the packaging impact now considered a mainstream news item, I learned it is now more crucial than ever that packaging professionals are equipped with the right (verified) knowledge to ensure sustainable solutions will not result in compromising the ultimate purpose of packaging which is still to maintain the ability to protect, preserve, contain, communicate, and transport a product all the way to the consumer. Q6: What next for your career? Suzy: T he rate of change happening in the field of packaging in terms of research, development and innovation is exponential and I am very excited to be part of this positive transformation. For this reason, my focus is entirely on advancing my career and professional development by continuing education, training and staying abreast with the latest trends in packaging. I am also keen to give back to the packaging community by way of mentoring and knowledge sharing with peers who are passionate about it. The Certified Packaging Professional (CPP) designation for the industry is offered exclusively through the Australian Institute of Packaging (AIP) in Australasia, the Certified Packaging Professional (CPP) designation is the leading mark of excellence internationally and a must-have recognition of industry proficiency and achievement for packaging professionals. CPP credential demonstrates that a packaging practitioner possesses packaging knowledge, experience and skills to the degree that they deserve recognition as a true packaging professional; a cut above their peers. Martogg showcases LCM’s circular capabilities

T

he Martogg Group, along with Sustainable Sally, recently invited Australian Institute of Packaging (AIP) members to a virtual tour of its Life Cycle Management (LCM) division in Victoria, to showcase its capabilities and learn of its push for a circular economy for plastics. Operating as the company's sustainability division, Martogg LCM is dedicated to providing businesses and brands throughout Australia and the world with an extensive range of recycled polymers, both for industrial and food contact applications. “We’ve always had a circular mentality to plastics since our inception, using recycled feedstocks in all areas of our business – from selected master batch and engineering resins, to commodity compounding and outright recycling,” says Austen Ramage, group sustainability manager for Martogg Group. “We feel that as a recycling business, we are uniquely positioned as a compounding company that also recycles, as opposed to an outright recycler. It might seem like a subtle difference, but because of this we take all 46 years of our compounding experience into every new recycled formulation or batch that we manufacture. “We believe that brands and retailers have a clear role to play in this as well, including but not limited to educating consumers of the benefits of plastic, buying products that are packaged in recycled content, and also how to recycle correctly and reuse plastics wherever possible. From our experience, plastic is far too valuable of a resource to only use it once." The Group recently joined forces with leading sustainability advocate Sustainable Sally Williams to further bring awareness to the importance of the circular economy in Australia for converters, brand owners, and consumers. During the virtual tour, Sustainable Sally and Martogg LCM premiered a three-part video series that discussed the current state of the recycling industry in Australia, showcasing the technologies involved and recycled polymers available, and sharing the story of some great work being done in this space.

“The devastating effects discarded single-use plastics could have on our environment can only be described as catastrophic, and if we don’t come up with sustainable solutions soon, it won’t be long before the contamination will directly affect us all,” says Williams. “However, we have reached a turning point, and thanks to Martogg and other visionary recycling companies, there is now a sustainable solution that could extend the lifecycle of these valuable polymers indefinitely.” According to Ben McCulloch, product manager – marPET, Martogg Group, we have been benefiting from plastic in some way, shape or form due to its many different uses, which is why it has dominated the packaging industry for decades. “We’ve got a stockpile of waste that is growing at a pretty rapid rate, with thousands of tonnes of plastic every day, and we need to find a solution that isn’t just putting it into the ground, shipping it offshore, or letting it enter our environment,” McCulloch says. “We have to take our own responsibility for it, and the good news is that plastic is inherently recyclable, so the whole notion around plastic being a single-use material, it is false. “We have been recycling for years and the beauty is you only have to look as far as PET as an example to see that this material as a post-consumer material can be recycled back into food grade resin suitable again for the same application from whence it originated. “So we now have got an opportunity to direct that waste plastic through the recycling facility and put it back out into consumer goods, and it is so important for the circular economy.”

Martogg showcases LCM’s circular capabilities

The Vacurema line.

Martogg itself has its own brand of rPET too, which it calls marPET, which according to Williams, represents a turning point in the eradication of single-use plastic as it is a totally recycled raw material that can effectively be reused over and over again. It is food contact approved and is produced via Martogg Group’s three Vacurema lines in its Dandenong facility, which has the production capacity of 23,000 tonnes per annum. “Recycled PET can and should be used into all applications, but specifically, PET as a resin is a superior material and a dominant material in food packaging and other FMCG products,” McCulloch says. “Now, the beauty of recycled PET is that it can be used directly in place of virgin PET, so it is a direct substitute – it also has to be FDA compliant, it is durable, it is robust, it is essentially the same thing as virgin PET. We are not losing any of the properties.” “We use the Vacurema machines to treat the material through the reactors, then decontaminating it, so it is actually purifying the resin. It has to be that way because a lot of these recycled materials are going back into food contact applications,” adds Greg Kerslake, manufacturing manager, Martogg. “Very fine particulates are removed through this process to ensure that the quality of the material doesn’t have any inclusions or any contaminants that may be introduced into the actual finished product. “Once everything is then sampled, quality control passed, we can then put it into stores and away it goes. It can go around and around again infinitely, becoming a completely circular process." The materials are then delivered to several of Martogg’s partners, including Victorian-based RPAK, who manufactures and distributes a wide range of recycled food packaging to industry, including those made with marPET. “Everything that we make is made from 100 per cent recycled material, and ideally, from the post-consumer industrial waste,” explains Michael Reid, managing director, RPAK. “We would make probably 50 per cent of all of our products with marPET, and industry has received that very well. If we asked that question five years ago maybe not so, because of the slight price premium, but there’s been a change in thinking recently due to

more awareness and education coming through about recycling and sustainability. “marPET gives us the opportunity to increase the amount of recycled content that we can use. Without marPET, I would have to be running virgin materials only, and I would then be able to mix post-industrial scrap from my own processes, but I’ll only achieve 30 per cent maximium. marPET enabled us to take that to 50 per cent, and in some cases, 100 per cent when required.” McCulloch believes it is partnerships like this that will push forward Australia’s transition to a circular economy. “It is incredible that we have a manufacturer in RPAK who is a clear advocate for sustainability,” McCulloch says. “They are playing their part. They are using recycled PET back into their packaging. And they already have many businesses and brands that are aligned with them for their packaging solutions. “But I do believe that it begins and ends with the consumer. If consumers are actively seeking product packaging such as this that contains recycled content, they are buying it and know the story behind it, then no doubt we’ve got a circular economy on our hands.” Published with permission from PKN Packaging News

Following on from the recent AIP Virtual Tour Martogg has been busy answering the questions that members asked via video. The first video is with Greg Kerslake and the second one is with Michael Reed from RPak.

ANZPAC pact to unite plastic supply chain

T

he ANZPAC Plastics Pact has officially launched, uniting businesses, NGOs, and governments across the plastics supply chain behind a series of ambitious 2025 targets to eliminate plastic waste.

ANZPAC (Australia, New Zealand and Pacific Islands) has joined the Ellen MacArthur Foundation’s global Plastics Pact Network, which is a globally aligned response to plastic waste and pollution. It unites over 550 member organisations behind the shared vision of a circular economy for plastic, where it never becomes a waste or pollution. The ANZPAC Plastics Pact has been a deal three years in the making, and members and supporters celebrated the official, launch of the program at the Australian National Maritime Museum in Sydney on 18 May. The event drew a crowd in physical attendance, and some 200 participants online. The ANZPAC Plastics Pact, which will be administered by the Australian Packaging Covenant Organisation (APCO), represents the complete plastics supply chain – from leading brands, packaging manufacturers and retailers, to resource recovery leaders, government institutions and NGOs. “This is a platform for creating a consolidated and cohesive approach for the entire plastics supply chain to work together on the important issue of taking plastic and making it circular,” explained Brooke Donnelly, CEO of APCO. “Here in Australia, just 18 per cent of the plastic we put on the market is successfully recovered for future use. We have a responsibility to be better at that and today’s launch is an incredible step forward." “And it is really important in this conversation to recognise that plastic as a resource isn’t evil, but the way that we manage plastic at the end of its life is not very effective or efficient at the moment. We cannot be doing business like this moving forward." The ambitious new cross-regional program will work to fundamentally transform the country’s response to plastic by eliminating unneeded plastics; innovating to ensure plastics we do need are reusable, recyclable, or compostable; and circulating the plastic we use, keeping it in the economy and out of the environment.

AIP NEWSLETTER JUNE 2021

The immediate next steps for the ANZPAC Plastics Pact program to achieve its 2025 goals is to develop a roadmap for action. “The roadmap is really the first step of the ANZPAC network and its important that we all work together to get that clearly defined within the next 12 months so we can start to accelerate achieving our ambitious targets,” Donnelly said. “We’ve already started to talk to benefactors and brands to secure their commitments for the use of recycled materials in their packaging format, which is fundamental in achieving a circular outcome." “There’s a lot of work to be done and the roadmap, along with the project development phase, is very much about working through what that path towards the circular economy will look like.” According to Trevor Evans, assistant minister for waste reduction and environmental management, there are few areas as complex and challenging as plastic waste here in Australia. “Which is why we’re stepping up and taking significant action, both in terms of policy reform and significant record investments, to try to tackle these challenges head on,” Evans said. “Everyone has a role to play – from governments at all levels, households, small business and large, innovators, entrepreneurs, and community and environmental groups. Engagement, collaboration and cooperation are absolutely the key. “We live in a world with complicated supply chains, which is why it’s important for regional approaches, such as the ANZPAC [Plastics Pact], are able to come to the fore with direct support and involvement to really make a difference.” For more information, visit the ANZPAC Plastics Pact website here.
