MEMBER INTERVIEWS
Andrew U’Ren AAIP 2011 AIP Scholarship Winner (Southern Cross Awards)
Q
Bruce Gunn MAIP Managing Director GunnLab Plastics Testing
Why did you join the AIP? What benefits do you believe the AIP offers all their members?
Andrew: I joined the AIP through my recent found interest in packaging design, after having some success in the 2011 Southern Cross Packaging Awards when I was a student at Swinburne University of Technology. The AIP benefits Members with a space for networking and enhancing interest in packaging. Bruce: I joined the AIP for two reasons: Networking with others in the industry, and as a source of information to help keep my knowledge of the industry up-to-date.
Q
How long have you been in the industry? What are your areas of expertise?
Andrew: Since graduating from University at the end of 2012, I was fortunate enough to get the opportunity to help Point 3 Design studio in Melbourne. I help assembled mock ups with finished artwork for new food products, ready to be sent to clients. My areas of interest and expertise are in graphic design and packaging design.
Bruce: I have been involved with the industry for nearly thirty years. For about ten years I was in charge of the central laboratory of what was at the time the largest flexible packaging group in New Zealand. I have been consulting to the industry in New Zealand, Australia and the Asia-Pacific region for close to twenty years. In 2012 we moved the laboratory to Victoria, Australia to be closer to our largest customers. My specialist area is laboratory testing of plastic packaging and other plastic products. I focus mainly on the physical, mechanical and chemical tests that the industry routinely requires. I trained as an analytical chemist and still do quite a lot of analysis/identification of plastic materials. If I had to name a single ‘core focus’ it would be gas permeability testing of packaging (oxygen and water vapor transmission).
Q
What is your current job role and what are your responsibilities?
Andrew: I am currently not employed within the packaging industry, but I am seeking work as a packaging designer/ graphic designer. I was honoured to be awarded a scholarship through the AIP to complete the AIP’s Certificate in Packaging which I am undertaking this year. Bruce: I am the Managing Director of GunnLab Plastics Testing, responsible for all laboratory operations.

APPMA 2013 ANNUAL SCHOLARSHIP DUE 22ND OF MARCH
T
he Australian Packaging and Processing Machinery Association (APPMA), in conjunction with the Australian Institute of Packaging (AIP), are pleased to announce that submissions are due before Friday the 22nd of March for the fifth annual scholarship 2012 Winner: Anna Roland program which will enable a packaging engineer the opportunity to complete a Diploma in Packaging Technology.
2. People who are currently employed in the industry, who may be following courses in associate subject areas such as packaging design, food science/technology, materials science/engineering and logistics will find that this program broadens the scope of their studies. In designing the course, the principles of constructive alignment have been employed, i.e. the intended learning outcomes, which reflect the requirements of industry, clarify the course objectives.
The APPMA is Australia’s national organisation, representing the packaging and processing machinery industry. The APPMA are seeking a packaging engineer that is looking to further their education by offering them a scholarship to enrol in the Diploma in Packaging Technology.
“The APPMA annual scholarship program is now in its fifth year and the AIP encourages all packaging engineers to register for the 2013 scholarship,” Mr Moyle said.
There are two broad target groups for the scholarship: 1. People currently employed in parts of the packaging industry who want to broaden their knowledge and understanding and take on greater levels of responsibility. Due to the diverse nature of the packaging and related industries, it is difficult to define this target group in terms of precise job functions.
Mr Ralph Moyle, MAIP, National President of the AIP, added that the Institute is grateful that associations like the APPMA recognise the importance of education and training and are contributing to the growth of the packaging industry as a whole in Australia.
Submissions must be received by Close of Business on Friday the 22nd of March with the 2013 winner being announced during the 2013 APPMA Awards of Excellence which will be held on Wednesday the 8th of May during AUSPACK PLUS 2013 at the Sydney Showground. Application forms are now available for the APPMA 2013 Scholarship program and can be accessed by emailing appma@appma.com.au or www.appma.com.au

he Australian Institute of Packaging (AIP) recently awarded the fourth scholarship for one of the finalists of the 2012 Southern Cross Design Awards. According to Ralph Moyle MAIP, National President of the AIP, the Scholarship was awarded to Mark Fisicaro AAIP, who is currently a Junior Designer, Packaging Design Marketing Services, Kraft Foods ANZ, and was a gold winner in Accessible Packaging category for the 2012 PCA Southern Cross Packaging Design Awards. The Accessible Packaging winner is for the entry that demonstrates an advance in packaging accessibility. For packaging to be accessible it must be designed to be easy for the consumer to open and close, store and dispose. “On behalf of the AIP we congratulate Mark Fisicaro for an outstanding presentation and wish him well with his career in the packaging industry,” he said. According to scholarship winner Mark Fisicaro, Ralph Moyle and Mark Fisicaro “the AIP Scholarship will allow me to continue learning – I feel that for me to be an effective packaging designer in the future I must have an understanding of the technical side of the process, as it is every bit as crucial for the success of a piece of packaging design, as the cosmetic appearance.” The Southern Cross Packaging Design Awards Scholarship complements other programs initiated by the AIP including, the APPMA scholarship for the Diploma in Packaging Technology and the AIP scholarship for the Cormack Innovation Awards.

CRASH BANG WALLOP Written by Michael B Halley FAIP
O
n a very hot afternoon a large contingent of members of Australian Institute of Packaging (AIP) travelled out to Werribee to Victoria University (VU) on the invitation to explore the testing facilities therein located.
The ‘commercials’ over the group moved out to experience first-hand the various testing machines and technical apparatus. The research students and teaching staff were on hand to explain exactly what was being done and the expected outcome.
Our host Associate Professor Vincent Rouillard and his team of academic colleagues and research students provided a memorable event, and even those unfamiliar with testing equipment and the reasons for testing up to the point of destruction were enthralled.
The visit needed a hands-on approach and it is not easy to put into words the various testing machines that go crash bang wallop or shake rattle and roll. The testing activities and research studies are also conducted at the Footscray Campus so not all disciplines were available for scrutiny.
The actual area where we were entertained is the Engineered Packaging and Distribution Research Group. Their mission is to provide a local, national and international focus for high-quality applied scientific research aimed at developing environmentally sound and optimised solutions to support the distribution of products and produce. Before moving into the testing halls Vincent gave an insightful talk about the facility and the rather pessimistic outlook for continued funding but a highly positive turnaround target. Ralph Moyle National President of AIP advised folks about the 50th anniversary year of AIP and our honour to be the host nation for the World Packaging Organisation (WPO) meeting to be held in conjunction with Auspack. Victoria University has a proud track record in packaging and distribution research. Since 1995, approximately 20 doctoral and master’s research students have graduated. Additionally many scholarly papers have been published and a multitude of commissioned research and consultancies have been undertaken for a variety of industry partners. Victoria University has built a strong reputation internationally with respect to Packaging and Distribution research as is evidenced by participation in a number of leading organisations. Not the least of these being Membership on the Board of International Association of Packaging Research Institutes.
The research group’s activities are supported by a number of specialist laboratories across the University. • • • • • •
These include: The Environmental and Distribution Dynamics Laboratory. The Dynamics Research Laboratory. The Materials Engineering Laboratory. The Polymer Research Laboratory. The Analytical Instrument Laboratories. The Food Research Laboratory.
Associate Professor Vincent Rouillard aims to engage with industry by undertaking: • Collaborative research projects (partially supported by government grants). These may involve the recruitment of higher degree research students. • Commissioned research projects through which industry clients gain access to technical expertise and state-ofthe-art experimental research facilities. • Consultancy services. • Testing services across our entire capabilities range. • Design and delivery of short courses and training across our specialist areas. On behalf of AIP Ralph Moyle supported the initiative offered by Vincent Rouillard to engage industry as joint venture partners to ensure continued research and training of academics so vital in the dynamic industry of packaging. So with heads full of newly learned things or revised understandings the group disbanded and headed home with the setting sun. None could say that their own skills had not been tested!

AIP PARTNER NEWS Intelligent process technology solutions with UNISORT
Attention Australian recyclers! NOW AVAILABLE IN AUSTRALIA..... Since 2004, Brantner Walters Ges.m.b.H. has operated an automated recyclable materials sorting plant in WÜlbling, Austria. In May of 2012, a pre-sorting facility was put into operation at the facility in order to effectively respond to growing throughput and increasing requirements for product quality. From the very beginning, Brantner has relied on products made by RTT STEINERT, a subsidiary of STEINERT Elektromagnetbau GmbH, which has its headquarters in Cologne, Germany. The original facility incorporated two UNISORT PX, two UNISORT CX and one UNISORT C when it was first commissioned. The facility’s typical products were clear PET, green PET, blue PET and PE.
The technology from RTT Steinert functions completely without the need for any obtrusive rotating mirrors or other moving optical elements. Furthermore, the latest generation of the NIR camera utilises an image sensor that enables the simultaneous imaging of all of the objects within the field of view (with the same high spectral resolution of less than 3 mm). This eliminates any losses of objects due to observing points only within individual areas. The spatial resolution of the HSP NIR camera is < 5 x 5 mm; a sampling rate of more than 300 Hz means that it can detect even very small objects.
The basic idea behind the new pre-sorting facility was to increase the capacity of the existing plant components by ensuring that only a portion of the flow of the bottle fraction to be sorted would be conveyed to the appropriate section of the plant. To accomplish this, Brantner made use of the fact that approximately 50% of the PET bottles are clear. The latest generation of UNISORT equipment was used to effectively separate the clear fraction of the bottles from the input material. The tried and tested UNISORT colour recognition system was combined with a HSP NIR camera for the first time. Both cameras view the same point, which simplifies the evaluation and thus reduces the amount of bottles incorrectly ejected (due to rolling objects).
10
a second stage. This is purely a coloursorting stage using transmitted light. The fraction that has passed through the first stage (clear PET bottles) is once again sorted here. Thanks to a spatial resolution of better than 1 x 1 mm, the finest nuances of colour can be reliably detected and removed. The transmitted light camera is even capable of distinguishing weakly coloured (light blue) PET bottles from clear bottles. Coloured bottles are ejected and further processed together with the product from the first stage. The use of the latest generation of UNISORT machines guarantees both extremely high purity and minimal over-sorting. As 50% of the PET input is already gated out in the presorting facility, the pre-existing facility with its NIR colour sorting stages can continue operating without modification. Sensor solutions from the STEINERT UNISORT family are now capable of recycling 95% of the materials in the raw materials industry. The UNISORT sensor sorting systems with inductive recognition, colour and X-ray sorting systems make it possible to achieve a material purity of 98%.
The first stage of the pre-sorting facility consists of two UNISORT PC 2000 R machines. These sort the bottles by type of plastic, and simultaneously by colour. The high-value clear bottle fraction is sorted positively, in order to achieve maximum purity. The fraction that has passed through this stage is then sorted by type of plastic in the pre-existing plant section. The new UNISORT C 1400 is used in
