The AIP is pleased to advise that the 2022 Salary & Career Survey is now open for the Australasian Region. The annual survey and findings report has been developed in partnership with sisterassociation the IoPP. The IoPP continues to be the authoritative force in reporting salary and employment information within the packaging industry in the United States, and the partnership with the AIP will expand the reach of the survey into new regions. The survey results for the Australasian Region will be developed from data derived from questions pertaining to our region that have been added to the IoPP Salary Survey in North America. This year’s Salary & Career Survey – the only survey in the Australasian Region dedicated exclusively to benchmarking salaries and employment trends within the packaging industry – will provide a clear look into roles, experience, education, career satisfaction, challenges and salaries of packaging professionals. The AIP is seeking input from packaging professionals to ensure that we can develop a definitive resource for our industry for the region. With just a few minutes of your time, your thoughtful responses to the survey’s open-ended questions, will contribute to this important industry staple. The results from the survey will be made in to the 2022 AIP Salary & Career report and will cover roles, education, experience, career satisfaction, concerns and salaries. Applications are now open for the annual Australasian Bioplastics Association (ABA) scholarship program for Australia and New Zealand. The scholarship program is run in partnership with the AIP. The Scholarship program will enable one eligible candidate the opportunity to undertake a Diploma in Packaging Technology valued at $9,000 and a second person the opportunity to undertake a Certificate in Packaging valued at $7,000. Eligible Candidates will come from across the entire packaging industry in Australia and New Zealand. In addition, the AIP will provide the winning candidates complimentary attendance at 4x training courses from the Institute’s education portfolio. (Valued at $1400)

2022 ABA Scholarship Program now open IN CONJUNCTION WITH

he Australasian Bioplastics Association (ABA), is pleased to announce that the 2022 ABA Scholarship program for Australia and New Zealand is now open for submissions. The scholarship program is coordinated in partnership with the Australian Institute of Packaging (AIP), and will enable one eligible candidate the opportunity to undertake a Diploma in Packaging Technology valued at $9,000 and a second person the opportunity to undertake a Certificate in Packaging valued at $7,000. President of the ABA, Rowan Williams said that "The ABA is pleased to once again sponsor the Scholarship program which has been designed to recognise and support deserving and emerging packaging professionals as part of their professional development." “We encourage all ABA and AIP Members that are interested in developing their packaging technology skills to apply for these Scholarships following on from the success of last year’s ABA Scholarships and the extremely worthy recipients Karunia Adhiputra and Maria Becerril-Roman,” Mr Williams said. “The demand for the field of bioplastics continues to surge globally for both certified compostable and fully renewable or biobased bioplastics. These niche products are designed to replace other types of packaging that after contact with food, are uneconomical or difficult to reuse or recycle. Education on these materials, as partly provided as content from these Scholarships, will aid future packaging professionals to make sustainable design choices.” he said. “The Diploma in Packaging Technology is a comprehensive course that teaches all concepts of packaging, from technical development, manufacturing, economics and sustainability of packaging materials. The course sets up candidates to achieve a well-rounded understanding of how packaging fits within the supply chain, and important factors that need to be considered to ensure packaging is developed with every aspect of its lifecycle in mind.

The role will be based on the NSW Central Coast at Cooranbong but will also work regularly from the Berkeley Vale site approx. 35 minutes away. I studied a Bachelor of Food Technology at Massey University in New Zealand with a project focused on product development and an elective paper on packaging. 3. W hat is your current job role and what are your responsibilities? Min: My current job role is that of Senior Packaging Technologist. The responsibilities involving delivering packaging projects that align with the businesses strategy and plan. I oversee all the packaging projects for the business, ensure the progress of the projects is communicated to all parties, establish project teams to deliver the projects and work closely with internal and external parties. As packaging is so crucial in the food industry, I work with many parts of the business and with suppliers. What is satisfying with the role is the collaboration, teamwork and problem solving of getting a new packaging project complete and seeing the benefits, cost savings to the business straight away.

Close the Loop shows circular economy in action

C

lose the Loop, a division of the newly listed Close the Loop Group, has given Australian Institute of Packaging (AIP) members a rare insight into its operations, showing how worldclass product stewardship programs track hard to recycle products at end of life – from collection, data capture, sorting, recycling and recovery. Attendees saw how products that go through the facility get recovered and reused as a like product, or recovered for parts and/or recycling of raw materials. These products include toner cartridges and bottles, cosmetics, electronics like power tools, and soft plastics from the REDcycle program. “Every day we get deliveries in from Australia Post and other transport companies coming from all around Australia, and we have thousands of collection sites all around the country,” said Steve Morriss, founder of Close the Loop. “And over the years, we’ve developed and refined processes for extracting the maximum value out of these materials and keep waste out of landfill.” Close the Loop services over 60,000 Australian businesses with its recycling and sustainability initiatives, and has been operating for 21 years with an audited zero waste to landfill brand promise. Finished products manufactured at the Close the Loop facility from these collected materials include TonerPlas, a high-performance asphalt additive; and rFlex, a new grade of plastic for injection moulding made from 100 per cent post-consumer recycled plastic waste.

“We get soft plastics from the REDcycle program and we get toner from the cartridges program, and we combine that together to create our product Tonerplas,” explained Kesh Nair, general manager at Close the Loop. “So far, we’ve laid over 760 kilometres of Tonerplas in Australia, and we are also the largest user of the REDcycle collected soft plastics, as well as the largest user of waste toner cartridges in Australia.” The company said that with Tonerplas, every kilometre of road being laid down would repurpose approximately 530,000 recycled plastic bags, 12,300 used printer cartridges, and 168,000 recycled glass bottles. “The volumes that we usually do in the facility is around seven tonnes a day, which includes about three and a half tonnes of the REDcycle material every single day, and at the moment we are operating six days a week, 24 hours a day, which really speaks to the demand of this Tonerplas product,” added Morriss. An absolutely critical part of its process and for the consistency of Tonerplas, as highlighted through the virtual tour by technical manager David Hitzler, has to do with the separation of any unwanted materials from the soft plastics mixture.

“We tend to get all sorts of things in that mixture like batteries and bottles, amongst other things, so our process can actually cleanse the post-consumer mixed soft plastics from that material, and is then prepared in a form that can be melted and homogenised in the rest of the process,” explained Hitzler.

ohn Wellman, the founder and non-executive chairman of Wellman Packaging, has passed away just shy of his 86th birthday and a year before the celebration of Wellman’s 50 years in business. He will be remembered as a plastics pioneer, innovator, and family man. In these years, the Sydney-based manufacturer of rigid plastics packaging has grown significantly from its humble beginnings in 1973 into a well known and widely respected supplier of bottles, closures, preforms, thin-wall and specialty packaging forming multi-decade relationships with many global Tier-1 FMCG brands. Having grown up in the family’s delicatessen business that operated a number retail shops across metropolitan Sydney in the 1930s and 1940s, John was schooled from a young age in the food industry and knew what hard work looked like. As a boy he would ride the Bondi Trams in the early morning to sell papers to the businessmen heading into the city, jumping on and off before the conductor could catch him, and in the afternoon would sell pies and other snacks to the passing trade on the way home. Entering the plastics industry in the late 1950s with Walter Barr, then one of the largest plastics moulders in Australia and part of the James N Kirby Group of Companies, John learned the plastics business and was deployed on retail clients including David Jones, Anthony Horden & Sons, Mark Foy’s, and GJ Coles. Thereafter, and almost a decade with polymer producer Dupont in Australia and North America in technical sales and applications development, John returned to Australia and established Prototype Plastics in 1973, providing injection moulding services for the development of new plastic products. Offering low cost tooling to reduce the barriers to entry, this innovative concept was ahead of its time and is now embodied in technologies like 3D printing. As his son Craig Wellman recounts, “They were heady days for a young plastics industry with many new raw materials and processing technologies being invented, like PET and polypropylene, which are now the building blocks of modern day packaging. Like so many of his generation, John had a pioneering spirit and we have sought to carry this forward in everything we do at Wellman.” John was a founding member of the Plastics Industry Manufacturers of Australia (PIMA) and a strong advocate for quality and training. Leading a number of moulding companies to achieve their ISO9001 Quality Accreditations in mid-1990, John was also central in establishing the NSW Plastics Skills Centre that was eventually absorbed by TAFE. The Wellman family and its staff have continued this legacy of contribution back into the industry with a variety of office bearer roles with PIMA and the Australian Institute of Packaging over decades. However, one of John’s significant disappointments has been the failure by federal and state governments to recognise the plastics industry as a separate trade and provide adequate training at both trade and tertiary levels, as is the case throughout the rest of the world especially Europe and North America. This failure has now resulted in the largest skill shortage the industry has ever known with the difficulty in replacing technical roles due to an ageing workforce threatening the industry’s future and all those who rely on it. Wellman Packaging remains a family business that has come a long way from its humble beginnings of one machine and a single staff member to employing almost 40 people, in a high-end food grade operation with leading names in injection and blow moulding equipment like Netstal, Husky, Arburg, Uniloy and Flexblow. While stepping down from active duties in the late 1990s when his son Craig took over the reins as CEO, John remained as non-executive Chairman and was widely known to be proud of what has been accomplished at Wellman, especially its E-ZERO vision for Sustainable Plastics Packaging and a “Better-Than-Carbon-Neutral” future. As Craig puts it, “Retirement is not a word that exists in the Wellman vocabulary. When you start or build a business like Wellman Packaging, investing every day in the vision and values of what we share with our staff, our customers and other stakeholders -- who we feel are part of our family -- you don’t walk away. It is a question of passion, legacy and commitment which I expect will continue for generations after me.” Known as a straight shooter, humble and a true gentle man with an infectious laugh, John was appreciated by his customers, suppliers and especially his staff. “John would always say that in a ‘family business’, family and the people you deal with come first and the business comes second,” Craig said. John’s contributions were recognised at function to celebrate his life this earlier week attended by close to 200 people. He is survived by his wife Robyn who continues to participate in the business, along with his three children and so far, 9 grandchildren. The AIP, in collaboration with AusIndustry recently hosted an engaging four hour bootcamp for SME's in Tasmania and Victoria, with over 60 people in attendance. The AIP brought four of their packaging experts to the session with over 150 years of experience which added great value to the attendees. The AIP hopes to continue to run this bootcamp with AusIndustry across other parts of Australia in 2022.

Qenos and Cleanaway join forces in Australian Plastic-to-Plastic Advanced Recycling feasibility study

A

ustralia’s largest plastics manufacturer Qenos and the nation’s leading waste management company, Cleanaway have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to undertake a joint feasibility study for plastic-toplastic advanced recycling in New South Wales and Victoria. The study will investigate the feasibility and environmental benefits of converting up to 100,000 tons per year of Australia’s household soft plastic waste and mixed plastics, which would otherwise end up in landfill, into feedstock for use in Qenos’ existing manufacturing facilities to produce Circular Polyethylene. Circular Polyethylene has identical properties to virgin polyethylene and can be used in food contact and high-performance applications thereby supporting local packaging and food manufacturers to achieve the 2025 APCO National Packaging Targets. Qenos CEO, Stephen Bell, said that this joint study leverages the combined resources of the nation’s leading companies in the fields of plastics waste management and plastics manufacturing. “Qenos is uniquely positioned to help solve our country’s soft plastics waste problem, as the only operator in Australia with the complete suite of assets required for the creation of circular plastics through advanced recycling. Without polymer manufacturing, advanced recycling stops at plastics-to-oil.”

Qenos will lead the study for one or more advanced recycling plants using its existing steam cracker and polymerisation facilities that would convert plastic waste pre-processed by Cleanaway. Cleanaway will leverage its existing collection and processing infrastructure and investigate new methods of collecting, sorting and pre-processing post-consumer soft plastics to provide the required volumes of suitable feedstock for advanced recycling. Cleanaway CEO Mark Schubert commented “Through our already established Circular Plastics Australia partnership we are well progressed in developing the leading mechanical plastics reprocessing platform for PET, HDPE and PP and potentially LDPE. We are pleased to now partner with Qenos to study advanced recycling, which would complement our existing reprocessing platform to process mixed plastics that cannot be mechanically recycled. It would enable us to offer our customers higher resource recovery rates and more sustainable, circular outcomes for their waste.”

Cleanaway is one of Qenos’ partners in a bid submitted for the Modern Manufacturing Initiative (MMI) Collaboration Stream to support the plasticto-plastic advanced recycling project. Incorporating 50 consortium partners and supporters across the entire supply chain from raw material production to supermarket shelf, Federal Government assistance would see a new sovereign manufacturing sector secured in Australia. Mr Bell continued: “This project will be a huge step towards a plastics circular economy in Australia and achieving the National Packaging Targets from local inputs. Qenos and Cleanaway are playing a leadership role in seeking to ensure Australian manufacturing fully participates in a new global industry that is forecast to attract $680 billion in investment by 2050.”

The joint feasibility study is expected to be completed by July 2022 and a final investment decision to be made later this year. Pending a successful outcome, the first of the advanced recycling facilities is expected to be operational by 2025. Sustainability: The global lens 45 members of the World Packaging Organisation (WPO) recently came together – albeit virtually – to discuss global developments in packaging over the last six months. Nerida Kelton, AIP’s executive director and WPO VP Sustainability & Save Food, tells us more.

A

S a part of the Sustainability

and Save Food Working Group meeting, 18 countries including the EU, Finland, Austria, Japan, Indonesia, Philippines, France, Spain, Italy, Turkey, India, Argentina, Australia and New Zealand, Kenya, USA, UK and Brazil showcased some of the key initiatives, regulatory updates and programs that are afoot in their country or region. While the common thread across all countries is a shift towards a circular economy and the move to design out waste and pollution, every region and country naturally differs in approach. It is encouraging to see that more governments are establishing regulations, levies and pledges to achieve circularity, reduce problematic materials and unnecessary packaging, and lower environmental impacts through circular and sustainable design. The standout discussions focused on Extended Producer Responsibility, Eco-Modulation, Deposit Return Schemes, Plastic Pacts, Single-Use Plastic regulations, the European Green Deal, Certified Compostable Packaging and On-Pack Labelling programs.

EXTENDED PRODUCER RESPONSIBILITY (EPR) There is a need to harmonise EPR for packaging across diverse regions, especially given the global interconnectedness of the economy and consumer packaged goods markets. There are many different approaches to the strategy, and many go beyond providing for end-of-life services to promote responsible product design, infrastructure improvements and market development. Effective EPR is often seen as a necessary piece of the puzzle in addressing the current recycling challenges and concern over single-use packaging waste. Many WPO Member countries are following an EPR practice and policy approach whereby the physical and/or financial responsibility for end-of-life disposal rests with the producers. EPR schemes aim to encourage producers to change design at the start to ensure that the materials and packaging are truly recyclable and recovered at end of life.

ECO-MODULATION In Europe particularly there is a move within governments and product stewardship/EPR schemes to eco-modulation – a program that

penalises the producers of problematic materials and difficult to recycle packaging and provides incentives for materials that are recyclable and recoverable. The UK Environment Bill enables eco-modulated fees, the CONAI scheme in Italy includes economic incentives and fee modulation, and Germany is looking to launch the program in 2022.

SUP REGULATIONS

OPPOSITE: Effective Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) is often seen as a necessary piece of the puzzle in addressing the current recycling challenges and concern over single-use packaging waste.

Forty per cent of plastic that is produced globally is classified as ‘single use’ where it is used once and sadly discarded. Governments around the world are trying to change the trajectory by establishing single-use plastics (SUP) regulations and directives. SUP regulations and bans was certainly a hot topic on most of the WPO country reports. The reality is that consumers no longer want to see any packaging placed on the market which is used only once and then thrown away. Key items on most of the SUP banned lists include plastics bags, cutlery, straws, plates, stirrers, cotton buds, take-away containers, coffee cups and plastic water bottles. Spain and France are just two countries set to ban the sale of fruit and vegetables in plastic. In Spain the new regulation also contains measures to encourage the purchase of loose, unpackaged produce and purchase of non-bottled water. One of the main goals of the draft decree is to reduce by half the sale of plastic bottles for

drinks by 2030, and for 100 per cent of packaging on the market to be recyclable. The ban on fruit and vegetable packaging will apply to produce weighing under 1.5 kilograms, following similar legislation in France, which will go into effect in 2022. The WPO working group discussed the need for a more collaborative and harmonised approach for the nominated banned materials and SUP across the globe. In Europe and Australia there are differing regulations between regions and states, which presents barriers for brands who sell into multiple markets. Another concern is that alternative material and packaging choices may potentially contaminate recycling streams and may not have a lower environmental impact. A balanced science-driven approach is needed when establishing SUP regulations and requires packaging technologists, engineers and polymer scientists to be involved in the discussions.

The European Union (EU) is also working on and implementing a harmonised model for consumer sorting instructions. Europen is working with AIM (European Brands Association) and FoodDrinkEurope to develop a common position on an EU model for consumers sorting instructions for packaging waste. The objective is

ON-PACK LABELLING We are seeing more countries introducing on-pack labelling programs such as How2Recycle in the USA, the Australasian Recycling Labelling program (ARL) in Australia and New Zealand, and the On-Pack Recycling Label (OPRL) program in the UK. On-pack labelling programs are evidence-based, standardised labelling systems designed to provide packaging designers and technologists and

to establish a harmonised system in the EU that will provide consumers with understandable and clear sorting instructions for packaging waste. The instructions will improve collection rates and achieve packaging recycling targets. The practical approach is to match the product identification symbol placed on packaging, with symbols on waste bins, and bins used by waste management/operators and municipalities. The WPO Sustainability working group discussions have shown that the world of sustainability is ever-changing, dynamic and there is so much to learn from other countries. No country has all the answers and it is clear that a collaborative approach to global discussions around circular and sustainable packaging design is paramount. Through the WPO, members have the opportunity to learn from each other, take elements from other country initiatives and apply locally, or help guide new members establish programs for their region. ANZ Packaging with Post Consumer Recyclate stands out globally Recent data has indicated that 39 per cent of all packaging used and sold in Australia is currently made from at least 50 per cent recycled content as 2025 sustainable packaging targets near. Author

ne of the 2025 National Packaging Targets is that all packaging that is made, used and sold in Australia needs to incorporate 50 per cent recycled content. In the latest data report entitled Australian Packaging Consumption and Recycling Data 2019–20 it indicates that 39 per cent of the packaging on the market in our region now incorporates recycled content. While it is encouraging to see how many companies across the region have been working hard to meet the 50 per cent recycled content target, it is more pleasing to see that two have been recognised for their efforts by receiving 2022 WorldStar Packaging Awards. The Collective and Squeezepak squeezy sauce bottle are outstanding technical examples of how to incorporate Post-Consumer Recyclate (PCR) into food and beverage packaging. Incorporating post-consumer recycled content is an important piece of the circular design puzzle as it means brands can reduce the percentage of virgin materials used in their packaging. This in turn will see less burden on natural resources and reductions in packaging going to landfill, land pollution and marine litter. Packaging that is circular by design also reduces carbon emissions and pollutants in the environment.

The Collective drinking yoghurt The Collective is an innovative New Zealand business that creates yoghurt. The company wanted to launch the first drinking yoghurt bottle in the region, which incorporated 100 per cent PCR base resin rPET in its packaging. The Collective challenged its packaging partner, the Pact Group, to maximise the use of recycled content in its packs; all the while achieving the same structural performances of virgin

material. To do this, the Pact Group assembled a cross-functional team that included material scientists, technical engineers, industrial designers and packaging specialists to run trials and develop the perfect solution. By using 100 per cent base resin rPET and light weighting the packaging by 27 per cent, 34.5 tonnes of virgin PET will be saved per annum and The Collective will re-purpose 25.12 tonnes of PCR per annum. A PIQET (Packaging Impact Quick Evaluation Tool) for The Collective revealed that transitioning from virgin PET to 100 per cent base resin rPET and light weighting by 27 per cent resulted in a reduction in CO2 emissions – saving 98.26 tonnes of CO2 emissions per year - the equivalent to planting 148 trees per year. There were savings of 3.3 million litres of water – the equivalent to 1.35 Olympic size swimming pools – and solid waste savings of 19.97 tonnes per year – the equivalent to the weight of 4.5 African elephants. The result is The Collective’s 700ml drinkable yoghurt bottle range, across five SKUs, is now made from 100 per cent PCR base resin rPET.

SqueezePak squeezy sauce bottle The SqueezePak squeezy sauce bottle with 100 per cent food-grade recycled PE is believed to be a first of its kind in the region and is part of Wellman Packaging’s over-arching strategy to becoming ‘better than carbon neutral’ and convert all feedstocks to 100 per cent recycled or renewable content by 2025. While designing the new SqueezePak sauce bottle, Wellman Packaging addressed other bottle performance improvements, features and processes to deliver multiple technical benefits to the finished

packaging design. The SqueezePak sauce bottle has improved hot filling performance and bottle stability due to a proprietaryreinforced convex base design resulting in reduced panelling of side walls due to negative internal pressures after filling. The design offers a 12 per cent increased top load strength, a 10 per cent larger brimful volume for easier filling – especially when hot filling – and a 7 per cent larger label panel area for improved on-shelf presence. Due to the design features, the SqueezePak squeezy sauce bottle weight can be reduced by 9 per cent, or maintained at existing weights for an improved top load performance, depending on customer requirements. For companies who prefer the coloured bottle, the consumption of pigments (delivered by masterbatch additives), has been reduced by 50 per cent because of the concentration of pigment into the outer layer of the extruded bottle, and by the application of multi-layer extrusion technology. The SqueezePak sauce bottle can also be produced in a translucent format with reasonable contact clarity bottle, i.e.: without colourant, to expand the reuse of recovered raw materials. The AIP encourages companies that are meeting the 50 per cent recycled content targets to communicate this to customers on and off-pack. Marketing departments need to communicate how much material has been reduced through light weighting, how much virgin material has been saved through the new design, what percentage of PCR content has been incorporated into the pack, and whether the PCR is locally sourced. Customers want to see that the packaging they purchase is circular by design and the brands they are loyal to are lowering their environmental

Next time you are wandering down a supermarket aisle have a look for brands that effectively communicate on, and off pack, how much recycled content is used and what messaging they offer consumers around the overall sustainability objectives of the business. These are the brands that are working hard to meet the 2025 National Packaging Targets, to minimise their environmental footprint across all areas of their business and to make sure that their customers understand the milestones they have reached along the way, as well as the next milestones to come.
