T

he AIP is extremely proud that one of our Members, Anhely Millan MAIP has published a new book called ‘The World Behind Recycling’ which is an educational book for young children that talks about how recyclability helps to protect our planet.

The book answers all of the hard questions from a young child’s perspective: Have you ever looked at a product and wondered whether it is recyclable? Do you know what happens after you throw your waste away and how this waste is sorted and repurposed? Mr. Bin will travel with you through the recycling world to discover all the secrets behind recyclability. You will learn how to recycle at home, the different materials that can be recycled, and the wonderful recycling processes. After embarking on this journey, you will no longer see waste in the same way. You will make changes to your day-to-day activities that can change the world, help create a better and cleaner planet, and most importantly, protect our future. Food waste in Australian homes: evidence for designing interventions

S

top Food Waste Australia recently released a landmark report: Food Waste in Australian Households: Evidence for designing interventions. For those working to reduce food waste, this report outlines the most impactful areas to focus interventions on.

Australian households throw out a staggering $19.3 billion of food every year – more than half of the annual $36.6 billion worth of food waste from farm to fork in the Australian economy. Australia is committed to halving its food waste by 2030 and reducing household food waste by at least 30% is required to achieve Australia’s goal (FIAL, 2021).

Reducing the amount of food waste from households means targeting areas where the biggest impacts can be made, such as: •

Targeting behaviours most linked to less waste (e.g. preparing the right amount)

•

Focusing on the products wasted most often (e.g. high value products like meat, or quantities like bread)

•

Supporting high waste consumer groups (e.g. families with children living at home).

Food Waste in Australian Households Evidence for designing interventions

This evidence is based on the most comprehensive research of food provisioning in householders ever conducted in Australia.

Whether the focus is on a specific behaviour, types of food or an audience, this report outlines those able to achieve the greater impacts for campaigns and interventions including government, industry and policymakers.

AIP AIPexec execunpacks unpacksthe thePIDAs PIDAs PKN Podcast’s 50th episode featured Nerida Kelton, executive director of the Australian Institute of Packaging, who discussed the prestigious Australasian Packaging Innovation and Design Awards programme – it’s history, past winners, what’s new this year and the value for entrants.

Kelton began the discussion by pointing out the upsides of winning a PIDA, including the eligibility it provides entrants to enter the global WorldStar Packaging Awards, coordinated by the World Packaging Organisation (WPO).

“That’s an additional and exciting reason for everyone to enter the awards. We are currently shining on the global stage, with the designs that have come out of our region being recognised globally by 60 judges from all over the world,” she said, noting how the ANZ region is punching above its weight, last year receiving the

second highest amount of WorldStar Packaging Awards in the world.

“I think it’s really encouraging for those innovators and designers in the region to think that they are not only working to make their packaging better for the environment and for the industry in the supply chain but are actually setting an example on a global stage,” she said.

Kelton went on to cover this year’s award categories for entrants – the special awards, the “outside the box” category, and the most coveted awards and scholarships on offer.

She said that the level of sustainability criteria has increased this year, and that entries in all categories must meet these criteria and demonstrate how their entries meet the 2025 National Packaging Targets and the 2030 Food Waste Targets.

“We will be looking at whether entrants have included and incorporated the 10-point sustainable packaging principles into their designs, and whether the Australasian recycling label is visible on packs,” Kelton said, pointing out the importance of including packaging communication devices, such as QR codes, on designs.

“We receive a massive number of entries in the sustainability category each year. And year on year this category continues to show huge growth,” she added.

Another important category, says Kelton, is Save Food Packaging Design, and one, she says, at which the industry should look more closely.

“Packaging plays such a critical and integral role in potentially minimising food waste across the supply chains. And if, from the start, we can design better packaging to help minimise food waste in households, we are going to lower our environmental impact,” she said.

On the subject of education and training that can be achieved through design, Kelton says that the PIDAs highlight the change that’s happening, and encourage further change, to support people who think innovatively about packaging and the change that needs to happen.

To us, it’s actually about showing people what good looks like and allowing other people to learn from these examples,” she said, explaining that the PIDAs were established to educate and train people to understand what best practice translates to in packaging on shelf; and to provide companies with the opportunity to look at previous winners and to learn from them, through case studies, interviews and technical articles developed by AIP about the winning examples.

“The designs that are entered are representing a trend, and a point of view. They are good barometers of the

key trends shaping the industry,” she said, citing several 2021 WPO winners, such as Zero Co, O F Packaging, Melbourne Coffee, Pana Organic and Zipform Packaging, as examples.

A new opportunity for entrants this year, said Kelton, is the video option, which enables entrants to submit a video of their entries, to help the judges see “how the packaging works, how it opens, how it feels, and includes all the features to be showcased.”

“Everybody should enter the Awards; I say that with all sincerity. I think it’s an absolutely fantastic program,” she said, advising people to encourage colleagues to enter too.
