AIP State of Industry Update Webinar: DCCEEW
WHEN: 5 June 2024
WHERE: On-line via Zoom
WHAT: DCCEEW is set to reform Packaging Regulation & Design
Requirements to deliver a circular economy for packaging in Australia.
W ith the Federal Government recently announcing that DCCEEW is developing new mandatory requirements for packaging under Commonwealth regulation that will replace the current co-regulatory arrangement, all packaging technologists and designers need to start looking at how this will change the way they design their packaging going forward
Australia’s new Federal national packaging laws will provide regulatory certainty and consistency, and make businesses take responsibility for the 6 7 m illion tonnes of packaging they place on the Australian market Strengthened regulation will drive investment, minimise waste and support circular economy outcomes, industries and jobs Better packaging design makes it easier to reduce waste, and to reuse, recycle or compost packaging waste Creating demand for recycled content will also increase recycling rates
This webinar will discuss the priority pillars for DCCEEW for this reform including:
•DCCEEW to become the regulator of the new packaging regulation
•Mandatory National Packaging Design Standard
•Eco-Modulation and Extended Producer Responsibility
•Eliminating Chemicals of Concern (CoC)
•Establishing minimum thresholds for Recycled Content in all packaging

The Australasian Recycling Labelling (ARL) program provides packaging technologists, designers and marketers with the tools to inform responsible packaging design It is an evidence-based program that can provide consumers with easy-to-understand instructions about how to correctly dispose of a product’s packaging
The ARL program simulates the two countries recycling ecosystems including collections systems, technical recyclability and available end markets for materials The ARL logos will identify which bin or bins each component goes in, based on the regions, state or country that the product is sold The system then identifies whether it is recyclable, conditionally recyclable or non-recyclable and the ARL logos match the assessment
• 62% of Australians and 63% of New Zealanders look to on-pack labelling on primary packaging for their recycling truth.
•76% of Australians and 71% of New Zealanders now recognise the ARL on packaging.
•Over 500,000 SKU's now have the ARL on packaging across ANZ.
This new version of the Introduction to Australasian Recycling Labelling (ARL) training course has evolved to cover both Australia and New Zealand and includes:
•Guides on how to use ARL logos
•Changes to soft plastics thresholds
•The new Check Locally program
• Intersections between ARL and Away from Home collection programs
•ARL & Container Deposit Schemes
•ARL & RecycleMate APP
•ARL & QR codes
• ARL Consumer Insights
•ARL Marketplace for SME’s
• Best Practice Award-winning examples
•Interactive session with attendees and their own packs
This training course will help guide companies that have never applied the ARL to their packaging and also update those who already use the ARL This course is suitable for SME’s and multinational businesses to attend We would strongly recommend that packaging technologists and specialists, designers, marketing teams, sustainability experts, packaging consultants and design agencies all attend this course so that everyone can better understand the true value that the ARL program offers your business

Product Stewardship & Away from Home Collection
WHEN: 21 August 2024
WHERE: On-line via Zoom
WHAT: The 5th AIP State of Industry Webinar will look at a wide range of successful product stewardship and Away from Home programs that actively engage the consumer with the collection. Product Stewardship Programs enable households access to recycling and safe disposal services for products once they have reached their end of life. Many of the Product Stewardship programs have been designed to capture and reprocess packaging and materials that can not be collected through a traditional Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) ‘Away from Home’ collection and drop off points are established for these materials or packs so that they don’t end up in landfill and can have a longer lifecycle Some hazardous and flammable products require safe disposal such as paints, chemicals and batteries and Away from Home collection ensures the product is disposed of safely These programs keep valuable resources circulating in the economy for as long as possible, reduce the impact of a product on the environment and offer effective end-of-life recovery systems Whether it is soft plastics, pharmaceutical blister packs, aseptic cartons, make up, toner and ink cartridges, batteries, paint, e-waste or coffee cups, everyone can proactively engage with numerous Product Stewardship programs across the country Find out more about some of the unique and innovative programs that are available and how your business, and your household can get on board SPEAKERS:

6th AIP State of Industry Webinar: Container Deposit Schemes
WHEN: 18 September 2024
WHERE: On-line via Zoom
WHAT: Container Deposit Schemes (CDS) are an ideal example of product stewardship programs where the brands take responsibility for the packaging they put on to market. This includes ensuring that there is an established system in place for recovery of the packaging and then the recycling scheme to support the end of life.
Container Deposit schemes for Beverage packaging provide many benefits to the country via minimising litter, keeping packaging out of the environment, providing quality feedstock for recycled content, incentivising consumers to recycle properly, supporting charities in Australia, improving recycling rates and keeping valuable resources that can be recycled out of landfill The challenge for our country is that not all State and Territories are running the same scheme and not all materials are accepted on a national basis There is also a need for greater consumer education programs to be developed to ensure that less packaging that should be going into CDS programs is kept out of kerbside collection, or worse, landfill
This webinar will discuss the current state of Container Deposit Schemes in Australia, collection points, accepted materials, opportunities for regional areas and more The speakers will also discuss how we can improve recovery rates and incentivise more households to utilise the CDS programs and be able to use platforms like RecycleMate to locate Away from Home collection points
SPEAKERS:
WHEN: 23-24 October 2024

AIP Supporting RMIT Bachelor of Industrial Design (Honours) students
For the first time the AIP provided lecturers for the RMIT Bachelor of Industrial Design (Honours) Studio with the topic 'the role that packaging plays in minimising food loss and waste'. The Design Studio: Social focuses the Honours students to learn on initiating and undertaking a complex teambased design-research inquiry.
The students learn various methods of undertaking design research and converting that research into testable and robust design propositions They apply specialised methods of design development, iteration, presentation and prototyping to realise sophisticated design outcomes
The AIP worked with RMIT to create a studio prompting the student designers to review the role of packaging in reducing food waste within the context of the Australian food industry and considering consumer perceptions and behaviours
The goal is for student groups to propose sustainable packaging solutions that promote food waste reduction using known and emerging design-led strategies and packaging technologies The key principals to target are zero food waste
Nerida Kelton FAIP led the lectures in a topic she is extremely passionate about and was supported by AIP Education Director, Prof Pierre Pienaar FAIP CPPL and AIP Education Coordinator, Ralph Moyle FAIP, CPP
Ralph has also attended all of the session live and supported the students to prepare for their final projects
RMIT will also be entering in to the 2024 round of the PIDA Student Awards, which is the exclusive entry point for the WorldStar Student awards
AIP Newsletter | May 2024 38
The AIP was also extremely busy with guest lecturers from the industry presenting at the Monash University Supply Chain Course. Over 150-200 students benefitted directly by gaining discipline-based knowledge and authentic experiences from industry visits and guest speakers.
This year the guest lecturers from the AIP included John Bigley MAIP, Prof. Pierre Pienaar FAIP, CPPL, Ralph Moyle FAIP, CPP, Nerida Kelton FAIP, Alan Adams MAIP, Chris Cester MAIP, Joe Foster FAIP and Lars Lljung MAIP.
According to Senior Lecturer Ananya Bhattacharya "To achieve the climate change mitigation targets, businesses need to adopt greater sustainability practices"
As such, driven by the Principles for Responsible Management Education (PRME), business schools have placed a much greater emphasis on educating students about sustainability
However, there can be an ongoing gap between educating students about sustainability and transferring this knowledge into the workplace
Recognising the gap, Ananya's teaching practices focus on equipping students with the skills and knowledge to sustain and influence sustainability behaviours as they transition from university to the workplace Aligning with UNESCO’s Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) and PRME, her goal is to empower students to translate sustainability knowledge into business and explore ways to overcome potentially prohibitive workplace cultures to act sustainably
Graduates have received sustainability-specific roles, e g , waste management, marketing, and packaging

AIP supports CSIRO inaugural Food Engineering Course
CSIRO developed an inaugural Introduction to Food Engineering course at the Food Innovation Centre at Werribee where 18 students participated.
Food engineering is a multidisciplinary field that combines principles from various branches of science and engineering for the production, processing, preservation, packaging, and distribution of food products It plays a crucial role in the food industry that helps ensure the availability of safe and highquality food for consumers while also addressing environmental and sustainability aims
This short course aimed to provide a comprehensive introduction to engineering concepts with a specific focus on the chemical and physical attributes of food, various food processing technologies, process analysis tools, the relationship between process parameters and product quality, and an overview of emerging technologies and digital tools
Throughout the course, practical examples and case studies related to food engineering were used to illustrate the concepts being taught

Packaging Consumption and Recovery report 2021-22 released
APCO has released the fifth iteration of its annual Consumption & Recovery Data Report. This comprehensive data report provides an analysis of packaging consumption and recovery in the Australia market in 2021-22, and measures Australia’s progress towards the 2025 National Packaging Targets (2025 Targets).
The Report has revealed modest progress towards the 2025 Targets These results were consistent with the findings of the National Packaging Targets Review conducted in 2023
Key findings from the Report include:
• 2021-22, Australia’s total packaging placed on the market was estimated at 6 98 million tonnes This included paper and paperboard (52 3%), plastic packaging (18 3%), glass packaging (16 4%), wood packaging (8 8%), and metal packaging (4 3%)
• The total post-consumer packaging recovery was estimated at 3 91 million tonnes (56%) This recovery was primarily of paper and paperboard (640%), followed by glass (184%), wood (71%), plastic (6 6%), and metal (3 9%)
• Post Consumer recycled content in packaging was 257 million tonnes (40% of total packaging)
• It was estimated that 84% of the total packaging (by tonnage) was classified as having good recycling potential Over 90% of glass (100%), metal (100%) and paper and paperboard (93%) were classified as having good recycling potential, while only 42% of plastic packaging was classified as having good recycling potential
Australia’s progress against the 2025 Targets includes:
TARGET 1: 100% reusable, recyclable or compostable packaging.
Result: The proportion of recyclable packaging decreased from 86% to 84%
Note: This was caused by the change in the recycling potential score for flexible B2C plastic packaging
This decision was made to reflect an extraordinary industry event where collection and reprocessing facilities became unavailable despite the technical recyclability of this material
TARGET 2: 70% of plastic packaging being recycled or composted.
Result: The plastic recycling rate increased from 18% to 20%
TARGET 3: 50% of average post-consumer recycled content included in packaging.
Result: The average recycled content increased from 39% to 40%
TARGET 4: The phase-out of problematic and unnecessary single-use plastic packaging. Result: This has been reduced by 33% from the 2017-18 baseline
Material Fact Sheet Highlights:
• Paper and Paperboard:
This material represents more than half of all packaging placed on market More paper and paperboard goes to landfill than total plastic packaging placed on market
• Rigid plastics: The recovery rate of rigid plastic has exceeded the growth of what is placed on market
• Flexible plastics:
There is a need to support both packagingto-packaging and other end markets to boost the demand for recycled flexible plastics
• Glass:
Recycled content in glass remains steady over time with almost half of all glass placed on market coming from pre and post-consumer sources

• Metal: Metal recovery has not kept up with the volume placed on market, and the use of recycled content for metals is also reduced
• Wood:
The dominance of wood packaging in B2B settings and the durability of wood packaging formats make it well-suited to reuse systems In 2021-22, 2 4 million tonnes of wood were avoided through qualified reusable packaging systems

New logo instructions - 'Push inside' for paper straws (AUS only)
Following review through the ARL governance process, paper straws associated with aseptic and liquid paperboard cartons are now eligible to carry the Conditionally Recyclable logo with consumer instructions to 'Push inside' the carton. This instruction is available for paper straws being labelled for the Australian region only.
Organisations assessing and labelling paper straws associated with food & beverage cartons can now use the Conditionally Recyclable logo with instructions to 'Push inside' for the straw, provided that the straw meets all other requirements for recyclability, other than size
While updates are being scoped for this to be reflected in PREP, this communication serves as evidence to use the 'Push inside' outcome for straws associated with cartons in Australia

New Zealand kerbside recycling collections
Three months ago, kerbside recycling collections were standardised across Aotearoa New Zealand. This means councils across the country now collect the same items:
• Plastics numbered 1, 2 or 5
• Glass bottles and jars
• Tins and cans
• Paper and cardboard, including pizza boxes
Please keep all lids out of your recycling, except tin lids if they’re still attached
Households have had a few kerbside collections now to get used to the changes you’re still unsure about?

SA advances composting with new research
A new study in South Australia has shown that composting food waste and compostable packaging through council-provided kerbside FOGO (Food Organics and Garden Organics) bins is an effective waste management solution.
Supported by BioPak, the research was a collaboration between Compost Connect and Edge Impact , focusing on understanding compostable packaging recovery outcomes and its impact on food waste and packaging diversion
The report details seven key findings, highlighting the success of South Australia’s organics recovery system
One major takeaway is that certified compostable packaging does not negatively affect the quality of the resulting compost
“This report is an excellent step in the right direction, showcasing that composting food waste and compostable packaging is a viable option,” said Dr Thava Palanisami, associate professor at the University of Newcastle
Gary Smith, a board member of Compost Connect, commented on the significance of these findings, “This research serves as inspiration for other states, territories, and countries around the world, highlighting the potential for large-scale composting initiatives to address our organic waste problem and create a nutrient-rich resource instead.”
“Although there’s still work to be done to reduce contamination and ensure organic waste and packaging end up in the right place, South Australia’s research demonstrates the effectiveness of public education campaigns and action on a government level. This provides a promising pathway forward.”
Other findings include the success of South Australia’s organics recovery system, the effectiveness of government-led initiatives and policies, the need for public education on composting technology, the importance of preventing contamination through enforcement and industry collaboration, and the challenges of identifying compostable packaging
The study also noted a two per cent contamination rate in kerbside FOGO bins, acknowledging it as a challenge to composting outcomes
The report positions South Australia as a leader with its established systems, policies, and infrastructure to handle large volumes of FOGO
Jefferies, a leading commercial compost facility established in 1842, is noted for its advanced recycling technologies and collection partnerships, which have the potential to be replicated at a national and global level

Could packaging technology help reduce food waste?
New smart packaging technology could allow producers and consumers to detect food spoilage without the use of a best-before date.
Smart packaging technology could allow consumers and producers to detect spoilage bacteria and reduce food waste, according to a paper published by researchers from McMaster University in Ontario, Canada
The technologies are made to read biochemical signals from common culprits in spoilage, such as Listeria, Salmonella and E coli, and include:
• A plastic wrapping that can detect and visibly signal when contents such as meat, cheese or produce has spoiled
• A small, self-activating test incorporated into a tray of chicken, fish or meat, that produces a visible signal when a product has spoiled
• A sprayable, food-safe gel composed of organic bacteriophages that eliminate spoilage bacteria

4 Ways Countries Can Make Good on Sustainable Food Commitments
The global food crisis is growing. Demand for food is set to increase by more than 50% by 2040 to feed a growing population. At the same time, agriculture and food systems are already responsible for a third of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions and a main driver of biodiversity loss and water pollution.
Last year’s UN climate summit (COP28) closed with landmark progress on the food front; for the first time, 159 world leaders pledged to pursue sustainable food systems and integrate agriculture into their climate and other policies Now comes the hard work of turning resolutions into reality Experts lay out a four-step plan countries can follow to stay true to the Emirates Declaration on Sustainable Agriculture, Food Systems and Climate Action
To Make Good on Sustainable Food Commitments, Countries Must Do 4 Things
1) Innovation
2) Scaling Investment
3) Behaviour change — including shifting diets and reducing food loss and waste
4) Policy action and a systems approach

Standout packaging at Anuga FoodTec 2024
Some of the standout packaging being highlighted at Anuga FoodTec 2024 includes aluminium free aseptic cartons, seaweed films, top wrap labelling and paper-based trays.
Author Nerida Kelton FAIP, vice president Sustainability & Save Food, WPO, executive director, AIP.
Joining 39,999 other people from 133 countries I recently ticked off my first participation at Anuga FoodTec which was held in Cologne, Germany.
As Anuga FoodTec is the leading international trade exhibition for the food and beverage industries the World Packaging Organisation (WPO) decided to exhibit for the first time and also participate in three speaking sessions during the four-day show.
I had the opportunity to visit some of the exhibition stands, talk to a number of exhibitors and see what is new, innovative, intuitive. I was particularly looking for packaging that is recycle ready, offers improvements to packaging to provide lower environmental impacts, new advancements in paper and renewable materials and any save food packaging design.
Some of the standout packs that I wanted to share were the SIG Alu Free cartons, Sea6 Energy seaweed films and novel products, Multivac Paperboard and G.Mondini Paper2Skin.
SIG Alu Free cartons
SIG Alu Free cartons are an aseptic carton with no aluminium layer. The carton is FSC certified paperboard, is fully recyclable and produced with 100 per cent renewable energy. The SIG Alu free carton has a carbon footprint up to 27 per cent lower than standard SIG packaging material, thanks to a unique composite with no aluminium layer. It is specifically designed for liquid dairy products such as plain white UHT milk, cream, and other oxygeninsensitive products. The carton is made from up to 82% renewable paperboard, with ultra-thin polymer layers to contain and protect products over long periods of time without the need for refrigeration.
SIG also recently added the option to link to 100% forest -based renewable materials via a mass-balance system. The SIG Alu free carton is another step to remove aluminium form aseptic cartons but still maintain shelf life and barrier for products. www.sig.biz
Sea6 Energy developing seaweed-based films
Seaweeds, characterised by their efficient utilisation of solar energy and minimal resource requirements, offer a promising solution to address the pressing challenges of resource scarcity and environmental degradation.
Headquartered in Bangalore, Sea6 Energy believes that there is a critical need to design innovation strategies to meet the escalating demand for raw materials, particularly within the packaging industry.
Sea6 Energy are developing seaweed based, compostable films that can be used for packaging of FMCG goods and fast foods. These films, when discarded into the environment, will compost in a few months and are available in Food and Non-food grades.
The utilisation of seaweed biomass extends beyond traditional boundaries, encompassing the production of bio stimulants for agriculture and horticulture, food and feed ingredients,
and the development of innovative biomaterials tailored for the packaging industry. Sea6 Energy is actively engaged in research and development efforts to formulate seaweed-derived biomaterials such as coatings, and extrusion compounds for flexible films and rigids. These biomaterials offer several advantages, including biodegradability, renewability, and reduced environmental impact, positioning them as sustainable alternatives to traditional packaging materials. The commercialisation of first materials is targeted within the next 12 months. I look forward to watching Sea6 Energy developments in the future. www.sea6energy.com/solutions/ bio-plastics/

solutions, fibre-based trays and some very impressive top wrap and top close labelling.
PaperBoard – formable paper
The PaperBoard series has been designed to eliminate single use plastics, reduce the use of plastics and improve recyclability of the packs.
PaperBoard material can be run on packaging systems in the form of rolls, pre-cuts, or trays. Paper fibre and cardboard composites with different grammages and functional layers are available. The use of functional layers makes it possible to produce paper-based packs that meet the barrier property requirements of the respective product.
What I personally like about the PaperBoard series is that the design is a step ahead of many other available solutions in the market for separability of the components for recycling. So many consumers get frustrated by some of the packs on the market as they can’t easily separate the film from the paper. This in turn means that the separable components end up in the wrong disposal bin and the pack that has been promoted as reducing single use plastic and being more sustainable is not meeting sustainable design standards.
The PaperBoard design however does separate easily as I tested multiple packs. The design features are intuitive and ensure that the paper and the film can in fact be easily and quickly separated by a consumer. www. multivac.com
G. Mondini Paper2Skin
The Paper2Skin material is FSC/ PEFC certified, is designed to be able to separate the components for recyclability and is easily openable and separable for the consumer. The pack offers a uniquely shaped window and the laser cutting of paper allows each brand to be able to create several window shapes depending on the product shape and size. https://www. gmondini.com/
Anuga FoodTec has always been on my bucket list of global trade shows that I have wanted to see, and it did not disappoint. Unfortunately, I didn’t get to see as many exhibition stands as I had wanted as it is a very large exhibition with thousands of stands.
I have no doubt that there were many other innovative packaging designs on display that I missed but the ones I have mentioned are just some that I wanted to share with you.
If you are planning to attend the next edition of Anuga FoodTec on the 23rd to 26th of February 2027 I would recommend that you allow at least two days to walk around the show. I also look forward to returning to Anuga FoodTec in 2027 to see even more advancements in sustainable packaging and recycle ready packs. Imagine what we will see in three years! F caught the
Another paper-based solution that I saw on the G.Mondini stand was Paper2Skin which is a unique and innovative paper top skin web technology designed to take packaging to the next level. The pack has been designed to eliminate single use plastics, use less materials at the start and ensure that the materials can be separated and recycled easily.
