1. Why did you join the AIP? What benefits do you believe the AIP offers all their members? Aiden: As a rapidly evolving industry it is key to be a part of organisations to keep up to date with innovation, connect with like minded professionals and practice continuous learning. The AIP is a well established body that has a great level of involvement within Australasia to support individuals in these areas.

I am excited to be involved as part of my own journey and to see what the ANZ packaging industry looks like several years from now with AIP’s support in it’s advancement. 2. H ow long have you been in the industry? What are your areas of expertise? Aiden: I have been in the packaging industry for almost 6 years now. The main industry focus I have had so far has been in Food Packaging and Horticultural packaging as well as protective packaging for E-commerce & Fulfillment operations. From this I have gained valuable packaging development capabilities, B2B sales & marketing skills, strategy & supply management abilities, Automation/ material/Sustainability knowledge and more. I’m very thankful for all the guidance and support I have received from my peers in the industry along the way. 3. What is your current job role and what are your responsibilities? Aiden: My current role is Technical Sales Manager at Punchbowl Packaging where I am primarily responsible for customer packaging sales & developments. Connecting our customers with the PBP team I draw on the organisations deep seated roots in Horticulture to deliver learnings which translate into packaging innovation for numerous industries. I also play a part in the companies sustainability committee but my normal day to day is usually focused towards collaboration with our strategic partners to scale new solutions. I have really enjoyed where Punchbowl Packaging has taken me so far and I am looking forward to continuing to support brands with their own packaging journeys.

The AIP is pleased to advise that the 2023 Salary & Career Survey is now open for the Australasian Region; Australia, New Zealand and Asia. The annual survey and findings report has been developed in partnership with sister-association the IoPP. This year’s Salary Survey – the only survey in the Australasian Region dedicated exclusively to benchmarking salaries and employment trends within the packaging industry – will provide a clear look into roles, experience, education, career satisfaction, challenges and salaries of packaging professionals. The AIP is seeking input from packaging professionals to ensure that we can develop a definitive resource for our industry for the region. With just a few minutes of your time, your thoughtful responses to the survey’s open-ended questions, will contribute to this important industry staple. The results from the survey will be made in to the 2023 AIP Salary & Career report and will cover roles, education, experience, career satisfaction, concerns and salaries. Save Food Packaging: Training Course: Guidelines to Design Packaging that can Minimise Food Loss & Waste NEW COURSE

WHEN: 6 December 2023 WHERE: RMIT University, Melbourne, 9.30 am to 2.30 pm AEDT WHAT: Does your business actively design packaging to minimise food loss & waste? If the answer is yes then what design criteria are your packaging technologists using? This new training course will not only help set the scene on food waste globally and across the ANZ region, but it will also help you to redesign your packaging to minimise food loss & waste. The most innovative and intuitive Save Food Packaging uses design features that can contain & protect, preserve, extend shelf life, easily open and reseal, provide consumer convenience and portion control; all the while meeting global sustainable packaging targets. Opportunities for packaging design to minimise food loss & waste can include better facilitation or communication around portion control, date labelling, extension of shelf life, protection, resealability and openability, serving size, food safety/ freshness information, information on storage options and improved communication on packs. The packaging should also highlight a wide range of design factors that help to prevent food waste including: mechanical protection, physical-chemical protection, resealability, easy to open, grip, dose and empty, contains the correct quantity and serving size, food safety/freshness information, expiry date and Best before date, information on storage options and improved communication on packs including open, reseal, close and dispense. The packaging should also facilitate sorting of household waste – easy to clean, separate, recycle or reuse. WHO SHOULD ATTEND: Packaging Technologists & Designers have the opportunity to minimise food waste at the start by incorporating the Save Food Packaging Design guidelines into their NPD process. Embedding Save Food Packaging design features at the NPD stage ultimately reduces the product’s overall environmental impact at the start of the value chain which minimises food wasted in the household. Marketers can spotlight the SFP design features as a point of difference and send a message to the consumer that the brand is actively trying to minimise food waste from paddock to plate. Sustainability Directors can ensure that the 2030 Food Waste Targets are included in their ESG’s policies and food loss and waste across their value chain can be measured. There is significant appetite in the food and beverage industries for the deployment of the Save Food Packaging Design principles. The Save Food Packaging design training course will provide the detailed guidelines, criteria, research and action places to arm packaging technologists, designers, innovation teams, sustainability & environmental teams, sales, business development, design agencies, consultants, procurement and marketing & communications departments with the tools to integrate the roadmap into their product-packaging design. The outcomes from this course will include more innovative and intuitive packaging that can minimise food loss and waste across the value chain all the way to the household and ultimately lower environmental impacts. Simply Cups Expands to Recycle all Paper-Based Cups “This collaboration has now matured into solid partnerships and we now have the capacity to use more material than what we are currently collecting from coffee cups!” Simply Cups has been assessed and recognised as an Alternative Destination under the Australasian Recycling Label program (ARL). Businesses that sell paper cups may apply to carry the Drop Off Only ARL on their cups to encourage greater recycling of paper cups. “We welcome brands, manufacturers and businesses to apply the Drop Off Only ARL on eligible products to demonstrate their commitment to product stewardship” says APCO CEO, Chris Foley. “True to the circular economy, we want to see a reduction in the number of disposable cups used in the first place. However, we are also aware that this is not always practical, so we think it is important to have

We want to ensure the resources used in these paper cups don’t go to waste, by redirecting them into products with a high value and a long life.” says Mr. Pascoe. he first day of FoodTech PackTech saw the AIP host a full day packaging forum with 20 speakers from across Australia and New Zealand. Our very own ED, Nerida Kelton had the opportunity to open the forum as VP Sustainability & Save Food for the World Packaging Organisation and set the scene globally and showcase the work that the WPO are undertaking with their Global Packaging Design for Recycling guide and the country Waste Stream Mapping Tools. The attendees also had the chance to hear from local PIDA and WorldStar award winners which was fantastic. A huge thank you to all of the speakers for taking time out of their busy schedules to be a part of the discussions. The AIP would also like to thank NZIFST, the Packaging Forum, Plastic NZ, NZFGC and APCO for collaborating with the AIP on the content for the forum.

Refining packaging by thinking ‘outside of the box’ ‘Out of the box’ thinking is one of the vital strategies to creating designs that stand out from the crowd, and is a necessary tool for today’s packaging companies A mix of creativity and boldness is required to create the best ‘out of the box’ solutions

ackaging is no longer just your usual square (or rectangular) box made of cardboard and held together by glue or tape. It is now a visually appealing package that performs based on form and function, in addition to being sturdy, having sustainable properties and having a purpose. Box design ideas now inspire and excite, with some solving real-world problems even if they’re minimal. Many packaging companies are ‘thinking outside of the box’ when it comes to developing designs and aim to create unique, interactive experiences for customers. We’ve rounded up some examples of how some companies have thought differently and found uncommon solutions to complex problems using packaging:

Close the Loop Group Close the Loop Group was awarded a high commendation for Lousy Ink within the Outside of the Box Design of the Year category of the 2022 Australasian Packaging Innovation & Design Awards (PIDAs), organised by the Australian Institute of Packaging (AIP). Since 2000, Close the Loop has been involved in the reclaiming and recycling of hard-recycled print consumables – mostly ink and toner cartridges. Lousy Ink is made from ink sourced from discarded inkjet printer cartridges which have been sent to Close the Loop. The brainchild of Oliver Ruskidd and Mike Eleven from Lousy Ink, the two Australian artists turned discarded printer ink into

FOCUS ‘OUTSIDE OF THE BOX’ DESIGN Before the partnership with Close the Loop came about, the ink would have been either collected and stored in 80,000L containers or burnt for energy, but after finding out about the massive amounts in storage Ruskidd and Eleven decided to see if it could be put to better use. The end result was a high-quality ink made from recycled materials, and while each bottle can vary slightly in tone and consistency it provides artists with a truly unique medium to work with. “It’s a great story as Lousy Ink was able to save over 85,000L of ink in 2022 itself. It’s a good circular story and a great initiative that shows that these products can be in use for as long as possible,” Close the Loop Group marketing manager Jessica Ansell said. This product was also produced in conjunction with Cartridges 4 Planet Ark.

According to the company, the design successfully achieves the requirement of temperature control needed for all delivery cycles.

The box is also made from 100 per cent New Zealand recyclable corrugated board, meaning that the end user can easily dispose of the packaging with other recyclable items in their collection bins. As for its silver-winning Snell Packaging – Mattress Corner Protector solution, its four corners were glued with trays snapped in half to make the perfect corner to protect a mattress. “Four sizes were required, and we developed one design that work for all. The slit in the design allows it to be adjustable, so the customer no longer needs to hold all the SKUs,” Oji Fibre Solutions NZ said. Its bronze-winning Future Ecology – EmGuard solution is a robust product and proven solution to plastic debris entering waterways from plantings on or near riparian margins and waterways.

Operating in the industry for over 30 years and proudly Australian-owned and run, the company wanted to create an advent calendar and partnered with its specialty packaging division, New Directions Packaging, on a solution which needed to be both functional and fun. The advent calendar housed various skincare products whilst being visually striking with the incorporation of an exquisite illustration of its almost 100-year-old building by talented artist Aaron Favaloro. The end result packaging is truly an experience – it allows the end user to open the ‘doors’ of the package in the same way that they are welcomed into the iconic art-deco style building.

The gold-winning Coola Box has an innovative design that allows for cool air to be contained inside the box, typically used for e-commerce deliveries. The structure of the box was designed to feature a snug fit with overlapping walls to help in better frozen and chilled ingredient arrangements that are packed with ice packs and required headspace.

This smart, sturdy box also achieves better space utilisation as more items can be safely packed within the area, resulting in lesser transit damages.

New Directions Packaging

The 2022 New Directions Australia Advent Calendar box is more than just a box. The skincare manufacturer and wholesale supplier of essential/vegetable oils, cosmetic ingredients and skincare cosmetic bases wanted to showcase its product and service offering in a unique way which truly embodied the essence of its company.

“In the past, green plastic corflute triangle guards were imported from overseas. The company said the product is the world’s most innovative, effective, and sustainable ventilated pallet wrapping solution. The innovation guarantees optimum ventilation and superior load containment while halving stretch film usage.

Opal industrial regional sales manager Craig Madden said the gold-winning JBS & Opal Dunnage solution is a 100 per cent recyclable cardboard corrugated dunnage solution to replace non-recyclable Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) dunnage.

“End-of-line packaging plays a vital role in protecting and prolonging our farmer’s and supermarket’s perishable foods,” the company said.

“We developed the cardboard corrugated dunnage solution to limit product movement during container transportation for JBS Foods’ meat exports. Dunnage is usually constructed from EPS, which can’t be recycled and ends up in landfill. Opal’s cardboard dunnage offers a direct replacement for non-recyclable EPS dunnage,” Madden said.

“To keep produce fresh, meats, dairy, beverages and hot fill products from damage during transit and storage, they need to be ventilated quickly and adequately to avoid ripening gases, moisture build up and rust from occurring. To assist with the cooling process, ventilated stretch wrap is used to extend the shelf life by allowing loads to breathe.” The VentX Unico ventilated wrap is prestretched reinforced with ropers that act like cable stretch film bands, securing load and load-to-pallet bond.

The dunnage solution is 100 per cent recyclable and contributes to the achievement of the 2025 National Packaging Target of the phase out of problematic and unnecessary singleuse plastics packaging, by substituting single-use plastic packaging for recyclable packaging.

It has smart engineered ventilation which allows air to flow freely through the pallet, cools the load faster and maintains regular airflow during storage, and reduces freezer temperature allowance – which lowers energy consumption and electricity costs in chill rooms.

As for the unique and beautifully designed limited edition Cadbury Roses limited edition Mother’s Day chocolates box, Opal featured the artwork of First Nations Wiradjuri artist Karen Lee. The packaging was created in partnership with Mondelēz International.

In addition, with no loose tails, it meets supermarkets’ strict requirements for palletised loads.

The limited-edition box was made to be 70 per cent lighter than the traditional Roses tin and demonstrated Opal’s diecutting expertise as well as its use of colour contrast and tactile depth with the brand’s iconic rose.

The VentX Unico system’s highperformance stretch film of three mini rolls on one continuous core can be used in conjunction with an Omni pallet wrap machine, allowing for a complete customisation and control of load containment, ensuring each pallet is wrapped to a business’ unique needs. Opal

The design also maximises functionality to ensure distribution efficiency and pallet optimisation. Mondelēz was able to add 25 per cent more shelf ready packaging per pallet – that is, 320 cartons per pallet versus 256 Cadbury Roses traditional 689g tins per pallet.

Opal was a multi-award winner for the Outside of the Box Design of the Year category within the 2022 Australasian PIDAs. The company took out a joint silver and a gold win, namely for its Cadbury Roses limited edition Mother’s Day chocolates and JBS & Opal Dunnage solutions.

“The Cadbury Roses box takes the brand from a flat standard chest style box instead featuring as a vertical style carton. It demonstrates Opal’s die-cutting expertise and takes advantage of colour contrast and tactile depth with the brand’s iconic rose,” Madden said.

Pakko’s Double Storey Holiday Hamper House design

Pakko founder and CEO Nina Nguyen started Pakko in 2017 with a vision to create a blueprint for Australian cardboard packaging manufacturing. Since then, together with her team, she has constantly challenged the status quo and encourages her team and customers to think outside the box. One design from Pakko that stands out for its out of the box design is its Gift Hamper Card Package that Pakko designed to look like a house, created for use during the holidays. The lid of the packaging is incorporated into the roof design. The team at Pakko designed two versions for customers to choose from – a single story created to mirror a gingerbread house and a double story option with side building that uses built-in locks to keep it attached. The Pakko Holiday Hamper House was originally created for Pakko’s customers and trade partners. The team designed it and filled it with goodies before sending it out to its partners as an end-of-year thank you. Apart from being used as a traditional Holiday Hamper gift box, the Pakko Holiday Hamper House is now being easily adapted for numerous uses including realestate marketing projects, housing development project marketing, new real estate development promotions and children’s promotional activities, just to name a few.

FOCUS ‘OUTSIDE OF THE BOX’ DESIGN The inspiration behind the Single Storey Pakko Holiday Hamper House was to create a design that wasn’t a standard hamper design. It also had to be able to handle a wine bottle, plus additional items. As for the Double Storey Pakko Holiday Hamper House, it had to do all the above in addition to providing more space and allowing for more unique building designs to be used. In terms of materials, a corrugated board (E-Flute – 1.5mm thickness) was used to create the solution, which provides structural support. Additionally, as corrugated board is a sustainable material, it can be recycled even after it is digitally printed. The solution is designed and made locally in Australia at Pakko. Result Group

Zipform Packaging was the gold award winner for the Outside of the Box Design of the Year category at the 2021 Australasian PIDAs for its rPump solution.

Zipform Packaging worked to design the rPump, which incorporates a reusable pump and connector. The reusable connector and pump assembly means that additional assembly processes are not required to utilise recyclable refill packs, whilst the removal of the pump assembly reduces carton sizing and weight for distribution. In addition to this, the wide aperture of the pack can reduce end of use product waste with the consumer having easy access to any product not dispensed through the pump. “The use of non-recyclable plastics has been increasingly in the spotlight since the announcement of the 2025 National Packaging Targets as brand owners and manufacturers alike grapple with the challenges of recycling problematic materials and products,” Zipform Packaging said. “One such product which is widespread throughout retail shelves is the traditional pump style pack which typically consists of a plastic base and a screw-top pump assembly fitted for dispensing the product. “The rPump solution addresses multiple outcomes, which are critical to achieving the 2025 Targets.”

Market-ready sustainable packaging for meat Cross-industry collaboration to drive market-ready and recycle-ready sustainable solutions is top of the agenda for packaging converters SEE, Amcor Flexibles and Plantic, who presented on innovation in this space at an AIP education forum at foodpro on Day One. IN a panel session deftly moderated by Australian Institute of Packaging education co-ordinator Ralph Moyle, foodpro attendees heard from Alan Adams, director of Sustainability for APAC at SEE (formerly Sealed Air); Jasson Mills, technical director R&D Amcor Flexibles; and Warwick Armstrong, general manager Business Development &Marketing at Plantic Technologies – the trio all highlighting sustainable packaging innovation brought to market with the dual benefit of preventing food waste and driving circularity. Adams opened the session and set the context for the panel discussion by emphasising the importance of collaboration to enable the industry to “truly make a genuine difference for business and the planet”. He added that the biggest impact the packaging industry can make is “designing out food waste”, which he pointed out accounts for 10 per cent of global carbon emissions. Other focus areas that should drive innovation, he said, are reducing carbon emissions and developing a circular economy.

Hyrdalock meat tray, which, through clever design adopting the principle of surface tension, has delivered a tray that eliminates the need for soaker pads to absorb the meat fluids, preventing hundreds of tonnes of the latter material from entering landfill. The clear tray is recyclable and contains 10 per cent PCR content. Adams said that although Australia does not currently have the recycling infrastructure in place to recycle material onshore, in the next few years it will, and then there will be a high demand for feedstock. He says we need to

design now to be recycle ready for when that recycling capacity comes onstream. He went on to speak about advanced recycling, and the pilot project SEE has initiated in partnership with Melbourne company Advanced Plastics Recycling (APR), to convert post-consumer plastic film and trays into oil, which can be refined and converted into new resins that can in turn be made into high performance food contact packaging. The process he said will divert 900 tonnes of plastic per annum from landfill, capturing it as a resource for new packaging.


PACKAGING & LABELLING Picking up from Adams and developing the theme of designing packaging to be recycle-ready, Amcor Flexibles’ Jasson Mills spoke about the PIDA and WorldStar awardwinning Ecotite R, the first ANZ-manufactured PVC-free shrink bag for meat. Until recently, PVC has been the barrier material of choice in the protein industry, but locally and globally the meat industry is moving away from PVC and Ecotite R offers a sustainable alternative. The development didn’t happen overnight, it took three years of R&D. Mills related how Amcor’s Australian team drew on global innovation resources within the group and then a solution was developed that needed to be adapted, using Kiwi engineering ingenuity, to suit machinery on the ground in Australia. Following successful trials, the product has been commercialised and Amcor is starting to gain a foothold in the meat market. It is now eyeing

other protein categories like cheese. Mills said independent reports have shown that Ecotite R is six per cent lighter than the PVC alternative, and depending on the gauge of the bag, offers up to 60 per cent lower carbon footprint and 55 per cent less water consumption. Mills, like Adams, stressed the importance of designing packaging that will be ready for onshore recycling infrastructure. He said that across the Amcor business around 92 per cent of all packaging they make is recycleready, reusable, or compostable. Warwick Armstrong picked up from Mills, expanding on the discussion around balancing the imperative to reduce plastic waste while preventing food waste. Plantic Technologies, a Kuraray company, specialises in packaging solutions developed from plant-derived sources, and has won numerous PIDA and WorldStar Awards for its innovations.

Armstrong discussed several examples, highlighting a collaborative solution that was chosen for the World Packaging Organisation’s President’s Award at the WorldStar Awards, the meat tray for Coles Finest brand. What’s notable about this rPET tray is that the company is partnering with local plastic recycler Martogg, which is located in close proximity to Plantic’s manufacturing site –

thus using local PCR content and manufacturing MAP and VSP trays locally, in collaboration with a local retailer to meet its requirements. An example of Australian made packaging at its finest. The event wrapped up with several questions from the floor around the integrity of the recycled content packaging and other circular solutions in the pipeline. ✷
