PREFACE First, we want to thank teacher Nicole for giving us the chance to create our English book. Taking the class for a whole semester, every week we have discussed a new story together. Each of us has written six different assignments,
including analytical writing, narrative writing, and creative writing. In the end of the class, we assemble our works together and collaborate to create our English book. As Hugo once said “Books are the tools of the soul, I think we really can get acquainted with people from different departments as well as know each other well in the process of making our book.

Analytical Writing 1 The fragility of sanity means your behaviors and your thoughts are lack of rationality. In the beginning of the story, the narrator says “TRUE” and acknowledges the thing he does. He tells the story in order to prove that he is not mad and show how wise he is. However, he just unwittingly lays out a tale of murder that betrays the madness he wants to deny. The narrator in the story keeps emphasizing that he is not insane. He describes the whole story, including how cunningly and slowly he turns the latch of the old man’s door and opens it, the process of killing the old man, and the wise precautions he takes for the concealment of the body. From his description, we can know that he has a plenty of rationality as well as sanity. However, this man doesn’t have the sense of compassion and humanity that will guide the rational mind to some good goals. From these parts, we figure out that the rationality and the sanity alone are fragile and not enough to make a good, normal and a whole person.
In addition, the narrator says he loves the old man, who has never wronged him and given him insult. But the thing that vexes him a lot is the old man’s pale blue eye, which causes him to make up his mind to take the life of the old man. A sanity person would not only see the evil eye rather than notice that it is still a part of the old man.
06
Although the man seems crazy, guilt still emerges insides himself which force him to admit what he has done to the old man. We can figure it out from two parts-the damned spot and the sound. Upon the eighth night, the narrator opens a very little crevice in the lantern, and the ray shoots from out it and falls full upon the vulture eye. He says,” I could see nothing else of the old man’s face or person:for I had directed the ray as if by instinct, precisely upon the damned spot,” meaning the eye. The “damned spot” is an allusion to one of the Shakespeare’s plays, Macbeth. The lady Macbeth sees blood on her hands and tries to get rid of it. She keeps rubbing her hands but can’t wash the blood away. Here is as same as the narrator in the story, and the damned spot means the guilt of the man. He wants to clean the world and clean himself to get rid of the evil vulture eye, so then he murders the old man. However, he can’t help but keep hearing the low, dull, quick sound that sounds as a watch made when enveloped in cotton. He tries many ways to get rid of the sound, like talking more quickly and vehemently, pacing the floor to and fro with heavy strides, swinging the chair and grates it upon the boards.
07
Unfortunately, the noise just steadily increases and grows louder, louder, and louder. This means as the time passes, the man’s guilt becomes bigger and bigger. The police chat pleasantly and smile while the narrator is certain that they hear the heartbeat sound and are making a mockery of his horror. Eventually, he says “Villains, dissemble no more, I admit the deed!” and he pulls the planks and shows them. He calls the policemen villains, and that’s pretty ironic because he himself is the real villain. What makes the man acknowledge is his guilt, and his behaviors also prove again that he has the fragility of sanity.

Analytical Writing 2 The story “Cat in the Rain is about two Americans who stop at the Italian Hotel besides a beach. One rainy afternoon, the wife found a cat crouched under the dripping table and she wanted to save it. She couldn’t find the kitty and went back to her room. Her husband kept reading the book while she was complaining to him. At that moment, a maid was asked by the padrone to send a cat to their room for the wife,
and the story ended here. The conflict is that the American wife wants a cat, but her husband neglects her words and goes back to reading his book again. The problem is solved by the maid who is asked to send a cat. The author adopts a third person narrative in this novel. The setting is at the Italian hotel. The bright colors of the hotel are facing the gardens and the sea. However, there is a war monument that appears near
the beautiful scene. Italians will come from a long way off to look up.
09
The reason why “garden” and “monument” coexist is that the author wants to reveal a conflict that can’t be reconciled in the background of the story, which is a contradiction between pursuit and suppression in the spirit of the woman. “Cat in the Rain” was written in the early 1920s, during which the status of American woman was undergoing a tremendous change. New women repositioned themselves in the role of family and society. They demanded equality with men and no longer accepted playing the role of the traditional women. We can divide the character portrayal into four parts.
The first figure is the wife. Her saving of the kitty also resembles self protection because she may think that the circumstances of the cat match her own situation. Also, “protecting the cat” represents that she has a power to decide things. We can see the independence and strong characteristics of the new women.
10
The wife likes the hotel owner because he lets her feel respected and worthy, and this is what she can’t find from her husband. We can see the wife still likes to snuggle with the man, which is the image of a traditional woman. And the words she says about letting hair grow out and wanting badly to have a cat who sits on her lap also show this image. The second figure is the husband. From the behaviors of letting his wife save the kitty as well as approving his wife’s clipped hair, we know that he has the attitude of supporting the image of a new woman. However, he neglects his wife while she keeps complaining, which shows us that although the husband
is an open-minded person, he can’t recognize the reason his wife wants to turn back to a traditional woman is to strike a balance for the genders. The third figure is the padrone. From his dignity, we know he represents a protector of the traditional women.
11
The last one is the figure of the maid. She plays the role of the most traditional woman, who completely obeys the man. That’s why she can’t
understand the wife’s persistence toward the cat as well as the suppression and the difficult position the new women are facing. The title “Cat in the Rain” is the women who have
lost subjective consciousness. The author has his own opinions, rather than putting males and females on the two sides of the conflict in the background of the social innovation, Hemingway thinks the harmony
between the two sexes comes from mutual understanding. The new women who can be adored by men as well as be neck and neck with men are indispensable people that men can’t miss.

Narrative Writing 1 In this ever-changing era, technology is becoming more and more developed, and various advanced designs are emerging. Among them, “smartphones” are the most essential and convenient devices, so much so that most people have one. I got my first smartphone in the summer vacation before entering my senior year of
high school, and I still can recall that I was really excited back then. I took plenty of pictures, downloaded different applications, and chatted with my friends anytime. It was so convenient and interesting. I just got a feeling like I found a new continent, because everything was so new for me. I supposed Braling and Smith in the story “Marionettes, Inc.” have the same
feeling as me. The high-tech product, marionette, has become a redemption from their out-of-breath lives controlled by their wives. 13
Later on, I found myself getting indulged in the smartphone. I used it when I woke up, when I ate meals, and before sleeping. I was so concerned about social media such as Facebook or Instagram that I would surf it every
moment. I started to feel empty and worthless because I realized I didn’t do things, and the time just passed. Therefore, I spent time carefully reviewing my life, and I came to the astonishing conclusion that I had been controlled by my phone. Likewise, Braling is replaced by the marionette at the end of the story. Due to the smartphone, I lost the precious time spent
with my family and friends. I lost the moments to observe cute things in my life. I lost myself. Braling has bought the marionette, Braling two, for his convenience. He wants him to temporarily replace him and stay with his wife when he goes to Rio for a monthďź› however, no one expects that Braling would really be replaced by it. It turns out that Braling and I have been all controlled by technology. 14
After this experience, I limited the time using the phone. I saw that most people were just like me. Take the elevator and public transportation for instance, Neighbors don’t talk in the elevator when they meet, which has made me feel upset and cold for the distance among us. If you pay attention, you would also find that most people are focusing on their phones no matter if they are on bus or the
MRT. I sometimes think about it: the original essence of the technology was definitely about connecting everyone in the world and making our
lives more convenient; however, I can’t help but thinking ironicall:Isn’t it causing much more distance now?
15
Narrative Writing 2 I would like to tell my love story in junior high school. Being influenced by the dramas, comics, or some movies, I bet every girl had their ideal types of the boys and absolutely had a romantic imagination to love, and I was no exception. l had fantasized to date with a boy who was tall, handsome, and good at playing the guitar. But actually, the one you fell in love with was totally different from what you thought. I couldn’t remember when I started to notice this boy. He was a person who was not tall, who ran fast and always got high scores in class, and was good at socializing with people. We didn’t get familiar until the second grade. Due to a serendipity, we took the same extra class after school. We began to chat together, and he was a humorous person. Knowing that he always went to the public library in weekend, I began to go there too. At that time, I thought the reason why I went there was only because a diligent person could stimulate me. The summer vacation in the second grade was vital because students needed to start to prepare for the entrance examination. Taking the lessons, writing the countless reviewing exercise, eating lunch and dinner, having a short nap, we stayed together all day long. I began to notice this boy, began to observe every move he made 16 unconsciously.
I thought it might be a normal one-sided love, but I didn’t sure whether this was the thing that we called “love.” One day we studied in the community’s reading room. When we took a break, we were talking about how many times bigger his hands were than mine. He told me to reach out my hand, and just in this moment, he held my hand! First, I was stunned and wondered what was going on, then I blushed and could feel my heart beat faster and faster. About five seconds later, I drew back my hand as fast as I could. In the following days, I tried to avoid him on purpose though I didn’t exactly know the reason. To the time before the graduation, “I have something to tell you,” he said. Yes, he confessed to me. However, I rejected him. Was it because that everything just happened so sudden that it made me uncertain how to react? Was it because I felt shy and embarrassed? Or was it because I didn’t have any love experience before? If these were all not the correct answer, then I really couldn’t understand what the teenage girl thought. Above all is my love story in high school. Recalling it now, I feel a little bit pity and bittersweet, but all in all, it is truly one page of my precious youth. 17
Creative Writing 1 The picture’s setting is by the window. Mamacita sits by the window all day and plays the Spanish radio shows and sings all the homesick songs about her country in a
voice that sounds like a seagull. The reason l draw attention to this part is that I think the author successfully expresses how lonely and
helpless Mamacita feels by the environment, the behavior Mamacita does, and different perspective rather than simply telling us what Mamacita thinks.
18
Creative Writing 2 I choose the setting that the children read in class about the sun. In Margot’s poem, she thinks the sun is a flower, that blooms for one hour. Her poem is read in a quiet voice in the still classroom while the rain is falling outside. I want to present the contrast of the rain which keeps falling for seven years with the world of the sun in Margot’s memory, and the contrast of a group of students who haven’t seen the sun and edge away from Margot and Margot, the girl who has seen the sun before and stands alone.
Margot remembers the way the sun and the sky is on the earth. Different from other kids who have been on Venus all their lives, the kids are totally unable to realize how painful it must have been for Margot to abandon the warmth of the sun and live on the Venus. I think I can understand Margot’s feelings because it has rained all day long recently. I really hope to see the sun as soon as possible, not to mention Margot, who moves to a place where the sun only appears one time every seven years. For the one who has seen the sun before, it is much more painful to lose it than the people who haven’t seen it and desire to see. After their first time seeing the sun, the children feel guilty of what they previously did with Margot and feel the shame as well as the remorse for their thoughtlessness. 19

because I was not interested in it. In this class, I needed to write something by myself. In the process of writing, I gradually experienced fun. Now I feel that English is not as terrible as I thought. I have tried three different styles of writing, analytical, narrative and creative. I shared six articles of mine in this book, and I hope you will like them.
Analytical Writing 1 The bachelor of the story “The Storyteller” tells us an interesting story. The story about a “horribly good” girl uses many symbols. For example, the girl called Bertha is the best standard of moral, because Bertha has three metal medals of obedience, punctuality and good behavior. She is the only one child who can own three metal medals in her town. The prince thinks Bertha is an extraordinarily good girl, so she is allowed to enter the park. The park is an encouragement for kids to be a moral person, so everything that exists in this park is moral. There are some little pigs, so pigs are moral too. But they will eat all flowers in the park. Flower is usually the symbol of beauty. It is no exception in this story. Eating flowers is not a good behavior. Thus, the pigs become secondary standard of moral. In the end of the story, Bertha has been eaten by a wolf. Wolf is an important character in this story. It sets up a new system about morals. Wolf devours Bertha, which tells us that following the best standard of moral may not always be the best way because Bertha died but pigs lived. This story lets us know that “the secondary” sometimes is better than “the best”. We should not always be anxious about being a “horribly good” or “morally good” person.

Analytical Writing 2 The main character of “A Shameful Affair” is Mildred Orme. Mildred is an upper class and she stays at Kraummer farmhouse for vacation. In this story, she shows some special traits that differ from those of traditional women. When Fred is fishing, Mildred says,” Let me try a moment, please? I have an idea.” Traditional women may always comply with others, but Mildred wants to try something by herself. She is not a puppet that only follows other people. She is an independent woman. After Fred kisses her, Mildred feels shameful, but she will not be flustered easily. “Once in her room she would give calm thought to the situation, and determine then how to act.” Mildred shows that she is calm and has capacity to consider. Traditional women may lose control, but Mildred can handle the whole situation by herself. She will not panic when she meets emergency. “Mildred would not bend the outward conditions of her life…… She would go and come as always.” This part explains that Mildred is brave. She has enough courage to face challenges. Even though Mildred thinks that is a shameful affair, she doesn’t change any act to avoid reality of meeting the guy who offends her.
Mildred is a strong and independent woman different from most women at that time. That is also the reason why she is not a traditional woman. 23
Narrative Writing 1 When I was little, I liked someone to read stories to me. In the past, the stories which I heard always had a beautiful ending. Prince and princess lived a happily ever after. “Snow White” or “Cinderella” is a classic example. “Justice would prevail” is another common ending. Its example is “The Three Little Pigs” or “Little Red Riding Hood”. Those stories were interesting enough to me at that time. As time went on, I wasn’t satisfied with those stories. We saw that prince fell in love with princess. Maybe they would love another person one day. Maybe they would fight each other or get divorced. Why they must be happy all the time? When I was a junior high school student, I took a fancy to mystery fiction. My favorite author is a Japanese named Keigo Higashino. The first fiction I read was “Miracles of the Namiya General Store”. I loved this fiction not because of its happy ending, but because the reading could make me happy. I usually bought Keigo Higashino’s fiction since that time. I always searched for his books when I went to bookstore. From then on, I have already bought over thirty books by him.
24
Narrative Writing 2 Mildred who was the main character of “A Shameful Affair” stayed at Kraummer farmhouse for her vacation. I also go to other place for summer vacation or Chinese New Year vacation. My mother and I leave for Hainan every three or four years, because my maternal grandmother and her son, my mother’s brother, live in Hainan’s countryside. Last time I went to Hainan was Chinese New Year vacation of 2017. We stayed there for seven days. They raised chickens by themselves, so we ate chicken to our heart’s content. I listened to cock crowing every morning, so I didn’t need any alarm clock or smart phone there. I could see many chickens everywhere because some chickens were free range. One day, a chicken entered the house when I watched TV in the living room. The chicken entered from the front door. It didn’t look at me, and then it went out from the back door. I was stunned at that time. What a funny scene! There were many trees, and we hung hammocks between two trees. When I didn’t want to watch TV, I would go there and lie in a hammock. Relaxing in the shade of a tree was such a pleasure. I only had one bad experience. I was bitten by mosquitoes. There were a lot of mosquitoes. When I took a break in a hammock, I always got so many swelling by mosquitoes that no one could ever imagine. Every time I go to Hainan, I will get relaxed, because the pace of life is leisurely. It is really a good place for vacation. 25
Creative Writing 1 Story is about a family and a bachelor in the same carriage.
The family has an aunt and three kids. Oh my god, those kids are noisy, so the aunt wants to make them quiet. Rescuers help little girl is the ending of the story the aunt told.
“You don’t seem to be a success as a story-teller,” said the bachelor suddenly form his corner. The bachelor told another story. Ending was Little girl named Bertha had been eaten by a wolf. Left behind the three medals which symbolized goodness. “Ending is improper to children”, the aunt thought. Raconteur kept kids quiet for ten minutes, so he didn’t care the aunt’s comment.

Creative Writing 2 Cat Cat Cat A poor cat in the rain. The wife wants to rescue it form the rain. “I’m going down and get that kitty,” she said.
Nice owner of the hotel stands behind his desk. The owner who has a heavy face and big hands attracts her. Harder rain and missing cat make the wife go back to the hotel.
Even her husband doesn’t understand her. Repetitive desire to change her life. A maid holds a big tortoiseshell cat In the doorway and then gives it to the wife.
No one cares whether she wants this cat or not.

Analytical Writing 1 “Rose” has been mentioned in the title, but it only appears once in this story, so what does rose actually stands for in this story. I’m going to analyze the possibilities in the following paragraphs. The first possibilities is that the rose metaphors Emily, since Emily is a noble and got a father with weird personality, Emily couldn’t reach out to the outer world, which has made Emily kind of start isolating herself just like a rose with thorns. Whoever gets near her she stab them away. Rose is an object that represents love. The second possibility is that rose stands for love in most cultures. Although this short story isn’t a romance, it has a strong connection with love. The love story between Emily and Mr. HB is one of the most important scene in this story. Therefore I think rose might stand for love in this story, no matter the love is normal or twisted. When we think of roses we often think of the color red as well. The Last possibility is the color of red can always make people think of blood so may rose stands for the blood of Mr. HB. Since we can inference the dead dry body beside Emily could be Mr. HB. Red also represents violence and horror, Although the name of the story may seem like a romance story but this is actually a horror story. Although a rose for Emily didn’t mention roses in the story. But if we keep awareness of the details, we may find out that how rose is shown in the story. 30
Analytical Writing 2 What is this story about? A fat woman? Homesick? Let us find out. Mamacita is a big fat woman who got homesick, she missed home so much that she cried day and night. In the third paragraph the taxi driver had to push. Push, pull. Push, pull. Let us first notice that she is kind of chubby. Then, in the sixth paragraph we can get that she can’t speak and she is probably not a American since almost all American speaks English. Third, at the eighth and ninth paragraph, we can start feeling she is missing her home town. For example, she sits by the window listening to Spanish radio which sings songs about her country, or looking at a picture of a house, a pink house, which might actually be the house she’s born and raised. Last, but not least, I think the last few paragraph could let us find out that she might probably turn crazy. In my opinion, this story is pretty weird but at the same time, it points out some issues that a lot of people in America suffer from homesickness, since they don’t have the chance to return to their home town. After all I think this story is more about homesick, rather that the fat woman.it points out the suffer of homesick and make us more cherish our hometown.
31
Narrative Writing 1 Ever since I was a kid, almost all the teacher I have known treat girls better. Not only thinking they behave better, they also get better grades than boys by doing the exact same thing. When I was a third grader in high school, there was a subject called Living Technology. The teacher told us that we got two team projects to finish and both accounted for 40 percent of the final grade. I was lucky, because I got four girls as group members. I gave a lot of effort for doing the projects and finished both projects perfectly. I still remember one of the projects is to build a green building by paper. This homework took our team days to finish and I put a lot of effort in it. But when the grades came out, I got two third of my group members grade, which means I’m going to get an F in this subject, and the teacher just told me because she thought I was the only boy in the group so I got a big chance I did nothing. Nowadays more and more people concern the issue of increasing women right. I think they also need to know about how boys have been treated unfairly in the society.
32
Narrative Writing 2 Back in the days when I’m in the states with my friends, funny storieshappened to us. When I’m first landed in America, I’m kind of scared since I traveledalone and I don’t really think America is a friendly place. I first landed in LA, when Iget out of the airport. I was totally shocked, because it’s kind of messy and actually not the America in my imagination. I spend few days in, and LA then I took off to Boston, finally Chicago, where all the interesting things happen. There was a day me and my friend went to the stadium to watch the MLB white sox game. Since my friend have been living there for such a long time, he told me that the place where the stadium is located is where the ghetto is. I’m kind of frightened out, but at the same time curious about what a ghetto looked like. We walked to the stadium, but nothing happened when we walked there, However when we’re on the way back, we were surrounded by black people, they yelled and used a lot of F words to us. I rapidly took a look at them, and I found out one of them seem to have a gun in his pocket. I figured out that we are getting robbed. I didn’t think much and quickly took out my wallet which got less money and give it to them, at the same time faking that we don’t speak English. God bless us maybe they think that we are young and don’t seem to be rich, so they let us leave at last. There are still a lot of story to share, but this is actually the one I don’t want to go through ever.

Analytical Writing 1 The story “A Haunted House by Virginia Woolf is a lively story with vivid descriptions. Especially, for the
relationship between ghostly couple and house. The author uses the way of the pulse of house throughout the text, which is a special approach to lead the story forward.
38
Each meaning of the pulse of house is striking, along the order it appears. First, “safe, safe, safe” appears in a soft way. The author emphasizes the word “softly” to express two the meanings of tenderness from the house. One is for appeasing the couple’s flurry emotion, and the other is
for welcoming them to meet each other again. Second, the pulse is speaking in a glad way. I think it has some happiness, because the couple are on their right way to seek their joy from many corners of the pounding house. That is a gratification from the house as their friend.
Third, the pulse is speaking in a proud way. Since the couple find out the hidden joy from the new sleepers, that is what they have been when the couple are alive. By the outline of the sleepers, the house seems to make the couple realize the warmest joy in the house, so the house feels proud. Last, the pulse is wild, even crazy. Fortunately, they seek their buried treasure not only the memories but the deep light in the heart, which makes the house complete the mission. All of the members in the family now and before own their joy again and nobody is outsider, including the house.

Narrative Writing 1 After I read the story “Cat in the Rain” by Ernest Hemingway, I found that the structure of story was similar to my friend’s experience. It is about chasing the best of himself. In order to make it clear, I use the first person narrator to represent my friend in following paragraphs. In my childhood, most praises appeared in the aspect of getting excellent grades. They came from adult’s mouth and expected that we could study hard one day. Unfortunately, they deeply affected how we grew up. “What a good guy!” the sentence was attractive when the first time my parents said that to me because of my first full marks on test. The proudness made my day, so I decided to chase more praise like that. Then, my road of studying was started.
Every day, I tried my best to get excellent score no matter what school I studied. Sometimes, people around me would ask me to have some fun, but I always rejected them, because they totally didn’t know what I liked. What I wanted was only a praise that appeared again and again from my parents and people around me. After a few years, I found that I couldn’t keep focus on textbooks for a long time, but that was the only way to earn some praise from my parents. It was a struggle for me in that period. Then, I started to solve the problem. Once, my friends suggested me that cigarettes could help me a lot, and I should give it a try. To be honest, I was really undesirable to use this way at first, though it indeed worked. However, the situation of being focused went worse, I had no choice…… 40

Creative Writing 2 I want to create a different ending to the story “The Lottery” by Shirley Jackson. Several years ago after the ONE died, the village came across the big drought that lasted for five years. In these five years, the lottery ceremony had been held up to twenty times due to the wisdom sentence “lottery in June, corn be soon.” The number of villagers went down to the level of twenty years ago, only 150 people. Since there still wasn’t any change to village, they wanted to process another lottery to make good wish from their God. Unfortunately, the day before activity Mr. Summers had a bad headache; hence, Mr. Grave willingly helped him to complete all the procedures. In the lottery day, Mr. Summers showed up because he healed from bad situation. He had been such a miracle, that most people smiled and boosted, “We really need you to progress the lottery.” Then, Mr. Grave carried the three-legged stool as tradition, also with a smile on the face. By the expectation of 150 villagers, the lottery winner was Mr. Summers himself, accidently. Regardless of the sound of proclaim, Mr. Summers turned into mad mood and shouted, “How dare you guys do that to me? I have held lottery ceremony for many years, I am the man to save the village! And you…. Mr. Grave.”
42
Suddenly, Nancy, the daughter of Tessie, interrupted him and said, “Everybody knew what you had done in previous lottery, about headache….” her tears occupied the eyes. Others stood by Nancy with sharp stones in their hands, and then they didn’t care about what Mr. Summers spoke. “Attack him! Don’t forget how many friends had sacrificed in this stupid activity,” Mr. Dunbar spoke in a large volume. Finally, Mr. Summers had been revenged by his own activity, violently and quickly as usual, and the lottery wouldn’t be held any more. While the result was confirmed, the big drought was going to be fine and be stopped by God.
43
