ENERGY RECOVERY AT THE CUTTING EDGE The new SHRM system has arrived!

W

ithout a doubt the SHRM  is one of those products that are fully geared to the needs of the future and offers an environmentally friendly, highly efficient solution for modern all-season air conditioning. The new 3-pipe SHRM system that was announced in the spring has now arrived in our warehouse and is available for immediate delivery. When it comes to demanding indoor climate control under a range of spatial and construction conditions, this product line is one of the most flexible and efficient solutions. A particular feature of this system is the special control box with solenoid valve control, allowing simultaneous cooling and heating operation with only one cooling circuit. The system has the ability to independently determine (AUTO MODE) which mode is needed for each room or area so that the control box implements a flexible and highly efficient switching between the pressure, suction and hot gas lines. This allows heat in one building zone to be transferred to another, where heating is required and vice versa, without the unit expending energy itself. The greatest benefit is the very high efficiency, which

Editorial CHRISTMAS IS COMING and the time of peace is upon us. The aroma of the first homemade ginger biscuits wafts in from the kitchen and in every direction you look your eye lights on the glitter and dazzle of vibrant Christmas decorations. Christmas can be a wonderful time. It is one that we in the sales department particularly find pleasant, as we make our seasonal calls on business customers and partners, to thank them for their cooperation and to chance a sneak preview at what lies ahead for next year. Needless to say, planning for the next season is well under way and a number of new ideas are already waiting in the wings for 2013. Although we have clear objectives in mind we know it is only through close cooperation with you, as our customer, that these goals can be implemented. And last year we have been very pleased with the results, which give us great motivation and energy for the coming season and a renewed zest to start the New Year.

Clever use of waste heat A perfect example of this innovative technology is the system for the kika furniture store in Klagenfurt, recently installed by MIWAS Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Technology in Bruck. The investment in this cutting edge heating concept is part of a total refurbishment made over several months. The system uses heat from the lighting department as a heat energy source and spreads it out across the complete first floor via the cassette type 3-phase VRF system. This allows approximately 200 kW of waste heat to provide a very high proportion of the energy needed to heat an area of about 5,500 m2 in monovalent mode.

IN FORCE FROM JANUARY: the ErP Directive (Energyrelated Products)

T

he EU Enabling Regulation 206/2012 will come in to force as of 01.01.2013, and implements the requirements of the ErP Directive 2009/125 EC for room air conditioners up to 12 kW cooling capacity. Among other things, this introduces the requirement to publish the seasonal coefficient of performance for air conditioners up to 12 kW. More realistic measurement points are defined for the SEER (seasonal energy efficiency ratio) and SCOP (seasonal coefficient of performance) values, which are now all incorporated into ratings according to energy efficiency classes. For cooling cycles the measurement points are defined at ambient temperatures of 20 ° C, 25 ° C, 30 ° C and 35 ° C. The climate data for Strasbourg in the cooling cycle will be taken as representational for all Europe. The individual measuring points are differentially weighted based on the temperature curves in Strasbourg. This means that a part-load operation of an air conditioner, which reflects more than 90% of the operation, will get a respectively larger weighting in the rating of the efficiency class. For the heating cycle a common European-wide temperature profile cannot be created. Thus three climatic zones have been defined for the different load profiles in Northern, Central and Southern Europe. The measuring points are uniformly set at outside temperatures of 12 ° C, 7 ° C, 2 ° C and -7 ° C. EMEA publishing homepage soon! Energy Saving House 2 OPEN NOW!

T

he energy saving house 2 was opened on 27th November 2012 at the foot of the heat pump castle Rabenstein, Frohnleiten,, exactly 200 days after the first breaking of ground. Approximately 100 guests attended and were keen to learn about and actually see how AIR-COND is encouraging and promoting the substantial potential of E2 with their air to air and air to water heat pump technology.

The comprehensive display of energy saving measures for historical structures, together with innovative heat pump technology is presented as an all-year round exhibition and is an ideal platform for dissemination of knowledge. The whole of the interior is given over to the theme of environmental friendly and resource saving heating technology. The ground floor displays a selection of heating systems for heat pump applications that work at highly efficient and energy saving, low power consumption levels. Full explanations of the individual components and the control technology are provided.

The technical ability of ambient, or exhaust air to provide sufficient energy at very cold temperatures is often difficult for home owners to understand. In the E2 house visitors are able to gain an insight into these new technologies and the many advantages of air to air and air to water heat pumps; all presented under the concept of: "Everything visible, nothing hidden." The opening ceremony included addresses from AIRCOND CEO Juergen Unterrainer, Toshiba Brand Director Yu Saito and Wirtschaftsbund (Economic Alliance) Director Kurt Egger, who underlined the innovative aspects of the project. Guest speaker Prof. Hermann Halozan provided a very interesting lecture with an overview of the history and development of heat pump technology. Prof. Halozan also gave an insight into the potential of the heat pump for the future and made particular reference to the impact on the earth's climate balance. It was also interesting to learn that more air-water heat pumps are already installed in Austria than ground source heat pumps and that by 2050 about 2/3 of all buildings will be heated by heat pumps. 20-20-20 is a target of the European Union which says that we not only have to save up to 20% of primary energy until year 2020, but also to use 20% of renewable energies and thereby to emit 20% less CO2. As an optimist I do not assume that these will be my last lines which I may write. This means that I believe that the world will keep turning around after the supposed downfall instead of the apocalypse on the 21th December 2012. Why else would the Christmas shopping madness be necessary? What else for would we discuss about “forecasts” and above all why would we otherwise care for our environment? But maybe we should bear exactly that in mind. I am sure that there is much truth in the Maya calendar as the ancient cultures certainly understood more about nature, life and humans as a simple part of the whole organism on our planet than we today understand as an industrialised, exploitative and profit-oriented culture. Today there are scientists who want to make clear that the resources on our planet are limited and that we are indirectly responsible for natural disasters, which occur more frequently due to the impacts of climate change. The Maya calendar is followed by clear measurements and analysis, but the results unfortunately remain the same. We might not bring the world to the downfall, but we are definitely destroying and destabilising it, if we will not begin to change anything. "20"

There are some very good approaches made by the legislation to push some real energy-saving systems. The European directive ErP Lot10 prescribes the minimum requirement for seasonal energy efficiency values, which indicates efficiency on a year-round basis and not only under idealized conditions and what is decisive for the import of air-conditioners. Toshiba has been concentrating exactly on this requirement with all its developments already for years and so offers air-conditioners and heat pumps in the highest energy efficiency class. We also set an example with the shortly opened „Energiesparhaus 2“, where heating systems heat a building with the source of outdoor air. Many units are displayed for “live” testing and touching and as a training center it is used to spread this very important information to as many specialist companies as possible. We know that it is 5 before 12 on our planet or we better call it 20 before 21. We need to take the warnings seriously, everybody in its personal environment and as a responsible entrepreneur and company. We all together as the Toshiba-family fight for energy-efficient products and heating systems with renewable energies, like our air-to-air and air-to-water heat pumps. Merry Christmas! AIR-COND in WEDDING FEVER

edding bells rang out for two of our female staff members this summer! The first to leave their single life behind was Bianca Straub, affectionately known as our "Straubi". She married "Pauli" in the Thaller Castle Winery in Eastern Styria, on 4 August, and the happy couple honeymooned on a cruise ship sailing from Mallorca Gran Canaria to the Cape Verde Islands in the Caribbean. Our Fraulein “Straubi" has now become Frau Jeller. Silvia Kleindienst and Micha Schober promised "I do" on the Demmerkogel at Kitzeck in the heart of the Styrian Tuscany. Their Big Day on 15 September was the cause for great celebration, particularly in the Steirerland restaurant after the happy ceremony.

ight before Christmas Ms. Christa Schmied, for many years working in the accounts department at AIR-COND, gave birth to her first son.

His name is Anton Michael and he was born on the 8th December in Deuschlandsberg. Both, mother and baby, are doing well. We congratulate the parents to the birth of their son and with them all the best and lots of health!

he Chillventa exhibition at Nuremberg took place for the third time in October and over three intensive days provided a focal point for 915 companies from 43 countries amongst the international refrigeration, air conditioning and heat pump community. Toshiba was also represented on the exhibition stand of the BEIJER sales organisation with an impressive Japanese inspired display for visitors of Mount Fuji under the slogan "summit of satisfaction". Although, as expected, there were no new major innovations in climate control on show, Chillventa is still an interesting venue for industry professionals to meet and exchange information.

TOSHIBA CONVENTION in Budapest

T

he fourth TOSHIBA Convention gathered in Budapest in late September. Business partners from all sales countries attended and in particular were able to update themselves on current product and join us in gaining a preview for 2013.

The Convention was accompanied by a fascinating sightseeing tour of Budapest, including a spectacular bus ride along the Danube.

fter a successful cooperation with AIR-COND for about 12 years Mr. Christian Blanc, EMEA RLC Director and Marketing boss, changes to “fire & security” division in France. We have been informed at the end of August, that Christian is leaving. During the Convention in Budapest he officially took his leave from a part of the AIR-COND partners. Many of you recognize Christian personally as he liked to join and to support our events and meetings. Christian is followed by Helen Muir from the U.K.

TRAINING STARTS AT E2 HOUSE

our fully booked Toshiba ESTIA training days have already been completed in the E2 house since it opened. The building space is perfect for conveying course content efficiently and in a very practical manner. Using many case studies, including examples from the daily "life of installers", Markus Pichler takes participants through the questions and reservations they have about the ESTIA air-water heat pump. The very large presentation room makes its own direct contribution to understanding, through all the heating components that can be combined with the air-water heat pump. Further training is being held for Austria in January and for the export countries in March. A notification with all the necessary registration forms will be sent in due course.

VIENNA CALLING: spending a great time during the annual company outing

raz, Friday 30th, November: Virtually the full AIRCOND team were assembled punctually at 11.00 clock ready for the annual company outing. The team was off toward the capital city, with a visit to the Gebrüder Weiss warehouse as the first stop on the programme. Accompanied at a freshly chilled temperature around the modern warehouse by the Head of Logistic Solutions, Bjorn Winter, our new work colleagues were impressed by the technology and size of the Toshiba installation. After culinary refreshment in the Luftburg, next on the agenda was a visit to the musical "Elisabeth" at the Raimund Theatre which was guaranteed at least to raise the pulse of the ladies present. Marc Seibert gave a particularly beautiful sung performance as "Death" that not only captured the hearts of the Empress, but also some 90% of the female audience. If perhaps the theatre did not exactly raise the spirits of our more technical orientated colleagues then at least the mood was soon recovered in the Kactus Bar afterwards.

In a relaxed atmosphere amongst a lot of banter and laughter the night passed all too quickly. But on the next morning, even if it was slightly difficult, the AIR-COND team were soon enticed out bed by a brunch at Meinl am Graben and a horse drawn carriage ride. After a tour of the Christmas Market and a visit to a Heuriger restaurant it was back home on Saturday evening. Somewhat tired most of us gathered up our luggage and were happy to still have a whole Sunday ahead in which to relax.

In combination with the high efficient TOSHIBA Digital and Super Digital inverter energy savings of up to 75 % compared to electrical air curtains are possible.

or a short time TOSHIBA is also offering air curtains in its product range. It is used to separate one environment from another where either doors are left open or when automatic doors frequently open due to high traffic levels.

Currently there are three different types of indoor units available: free-hanging units, cassette units and built-in units. In addition to the standard models, customised options (different colours and orientations) are available.

It creates a “curtain” of moving air that is blown over the opening of a doorway. The invisible “wall” will not allow air to flow through it.
