Dream shelf The ideal shopping experience. To make choosing bulbs and lamps as easy as can be, Airam is proud to present its Dream Shelf concept. As we are still making changes to our packaging for lightbulbs and lamps, there will be a slight delay before this bright new idea appears in stores. According to a consumer survey we commissioned, only 16% of respondents find it very easy to buy a light bulb. This is not at all surprising, as the change from incandescent to LED lamps has been very rapid, with technology constantly evolving. Overall, our packaging redesign will make it easier and faster to find Airam light bulbs brand by brand, and to compare different options. Very often, customers want to find a product that is as similar as possible to the one they want to replace. In the Dream Shelf concept, we highlight different options and the possibilities for making changes to lighting using a variety of store materials. This also makes the consumer’s choice easier.

The most significant changes from the previous and comparable units are:

• The colour temperature of the light – whether you want warm white, neutral white or bright white light. This is indicated by the number of kelvin, K, which is the unit of colour temperature. The lower the value, the warmer the light. On Airam’s new packaging, this information is prominently displayed on the top and lid. • Instead of wattage, comparisons between LED lamps are based on lumen output, which indicates the luminous flux – the total quantity of visible light emitted per unit of time. This figure is the largest in our new bulb and lamp packs.

Luminous flux / Lumen

Watt (W)

A key factor when choosing a lamp is the lumen output, which indicates the luminous flux – the total quantity of visible light emitted per unit of time.

The watt is the unit of power, and the number of watts indicates the lamp’s electricity consumption.

Colour temperature The unit of measurement of colour temperature is the kelvin, K. The higher the kelvin value, the colder and bluer the colour of the light. A warm incandescent light bulb had a temperature colour (Tc) value of 2700 K, and the outdoor light at noon on a clear day is around 6500 K.

Luminous intensity / Candela

Equivalence

The candela is the unit of luminous intensity, which is a measure of the number of lumens emitted by the light source per square metre at a distance of one metre. The angle of radiation is calculated at the point where the maximum luminous intensity has dropped by 50%.

The criterion used for the substitution method is the luminous flux emitted by the lamp and the reduction in this during use. A 60 W incandescent bulb (700 lm) is matched only by an LED bulb with a luminous flux of at least 806 lm.

The life of the lamp is expressed in hours, and the number of hours corresponds to the period of time at which 50% of the measured batch of lamps are still in operation.

Number of on/off cycles

Colour rendering index

This figure indicates the number of on/off cycles the lamp can withstand before failure. The number of times the lamp is switched on and off can vary from 40,000 to more than 1,000,000.

This figure indicates how accurately the lamp reproduces the eight test colours relative to a reference light source. Two abbreviations for colour rendering index are used: CRI and Ra.

The term “L70” is used to indicate that the luminous flux has fallen to 70% of the original luminous flux of the lamp after a common 3-hour operating period.

This symbol indicates whether the luminous flux of the lamp can be dimmed by a suitable dimmer.

Lamp energy labels indicate the energy consumption per 1,000 hours and the energy efficiency on a scale of A to G.
