Are you dreaming of white sandy beaches, coconut palms swaying in the breeze and moments of relaxation that make you feel like time has stopped? Welcome to New Caledonia! The archipelago is just under three hours from Australia and New Zealand. Get ready for a fantastic holiday, no matter what you are passionate about... The lagoon and rivers, mountains and valleys, culture and entertainment… Here you will find the perfect mix of activities and the ideal climate year round (between 21 and 27 °C). A beautiful nature
A unique biodiversity: nearly 75% of all species are endemic to New Caledonia Many other mysterious plants have shaped the distinctive landscapes of New Caledonia. Some can be found in the south of Grande Terre, a region with many contrasting colors; where the red of the soil mixes with the green of prehistoric plants and the glittering blue of the lagoon Going further North, the vegetation becomes denser and the forests more singular, sheltering giant tree ferns, both elegant and intriguing.
Your journey will take you to New Caledonia, an archipelago of 18 000 km2, which houses the most exceptional flora and fauna, both on land and within the lagoon. The lagoon is also the largest in the world, and its extraordinary diversity is one of the key reason, it got listed on the UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 2008. To strengthen its preservation efforts, New Caledonia also created the nature park of the Coral Sea in 2014 covering a surface area of 1.3 million square kilometers or 3 times the size of Germany. Non volcanic and protected from major upheavals, the archipelago is of exceptional biological and paleoecological interest with an extraordinary rate of endemism of nearly 75%. This incredible natural wealth offers today a true diversity in landscapes from South to North. The Isle of Pines, a mythical island, is home to the more emblematic plant from the Archipelago, the famous columnar pine tree, right out of the ‘dinosaur era’. 11
A wide choice of activities WELCOME
New Caledonia is committed to preserving its amazing nature. Parks and nature reserves have thus been created allowing you to take in all the beauty whilst hiking, cycling, horse riding or even quad biking. With many rivers, New Caledonia also offers numerous canoeing-kayaking options. For the more active, you can choose from the many adventure races and sports competitions organized year round throughout the country.
GREAT HIKING TRAILS FROM NORTH TO SOUTH, NEW CALEDONIA’S FLAURA IS BEAUTIFUL AND UNIQUE. The warm water of the lagoon, its underwater treasures and the trade winds that rock the coast all seasons, offer a wide range of water activities - all set amongst the spectacular natural scenery of New Caledonia: swimming, windsurfing, fishing, diving, family day out on the surrounding islets…You will need more than a few days to discover rich diversity of this aquatic heritage. The New Caledonians are proud of their lagoon and love to share its beauty. Another way to take full advantage of it, is to see it from above. Skydiving, microlight plane, helicopter, etc… Simply marvel at the fifty shades of blue.

Many accommodation options: from 5 star hotels to guest houses or camping sites... Land of cultures
Excellent infrastructure
The natural charms of New Caledonia and its rich cultural heritage are undeniable, all areas should be visited. A few days in a tribal village will open up a whole new world, untouched by mass tourism, just yourself on a white sand beach surrounded by friendly locals. The Kanaks, first inhabitants of New Caledonia, keep their traditions alive by adding modern touches to their music, painting and artwork..
5 star hotels, guest houses or again camp sites… The mainland and the islands offer diverse accommodation options, surrounded by magnificient landscapes. During the past five years, the choice of hotels on offer in New Caledonia has considerably improved, especially with the introduction of large international chains such as Sheraton or Hilton. New Caledonia also offers visitors a great range of self-contained apartments to satisfy all clients. Although Nouméa offers the highest concentration of hotels, many hotels on the Islands and in the North have undertaken significant renovation in order to meet international standards. The development of the North, with the establishment of a new nickel factory, has created a genuine economic boom. The towns of Voh, Koné and Pouembout form a new economic centre which now offers many cultural and sporting activities for locals and visitors alike.
NEW CALEDONIANS ARE A UNIQUE MIX OF KANAK, FRENCH, INDONESIAN, TAHITIAN, WALLISIAN, POLYNESIAN AND JAVANESE LIVING SIDE BY SIDE AND BLENDING TOGETHER TO CREATE A CULTURE LIKE NO OTHER…
Tropical paradise at the heart of the Pacific, New Caledonia is a unique destination which will seduce you with its many worlds. Choose between island relaxation and French sophistication, ocean waves and poolside ‘faves’, jaw dropping landscapes, cosmopolitan streetscapes… your journey is a promise of surprises and delights…
Today New Caledonia represents a true melting pot of cultures. All these influences are intimately linked to the colonial history of the country. Discovered in 1774 by James Cook, New Caledonia was given to France in 1853. This period was marked by the arrival of many settlers including convicts deported to New Caledonia but also skilled workers later on. Today, the different cultural groups have united, shared their stories, cultures and ways a life to work towards a ‘common destiny’.

Myths and Legends
Picture perfect
On the Loyalty Islands, the Kanaks have kept their traditions, myths and legends truly alive. Each excursion over the lagoon, in the Caves of Lifou, on the Limestone cliffs of Lékiny in Ouvéa or again in the dense forests, will be the perfect opportunity to be told a fascinating story.
Your holiday in New Caledonia will be close to perfection with a trip to the Islands. The Isle of Pines and the Loyalty Islands represent the quintessence of a Pacific trip mixing amazing coastline, crystal clear waters and Kanak traditions. New Caledonia is making a promise. The promise of an unforgettable experience, that will move you with its natural striking beauty and perfection. Here, nature has all the rights and the man stays away or adapts and lives with it in harmony. It is this life the inhabitants of the islands have chosen. A pact with nature which translates into an incredible wealth. The beaches of fine white sand, steep cliffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean, deep forests, mysterious caves and of course the lagoon with its surreal beauty. This is picture perfect. Between diving, relaxation on the beach, discoveries of natural sites of exceptions and encounters with the inhabitants, the islands will capture your heart and imagination.
Despite the quiet and serene environment,, the islands are not asleep. A tribal stay or hotel stay, depending on your tastes, will allow you to live fantastic adventures. In Lifou, vanilla is the Queen of the essences. Do not miss the visit to the vanilla farm. The islanders have an almost mystical relationship with nature and they will willingly share their stories, about the myths and legends of Kanak people, handed down from generation to generation. Here, you will redefine the meaning of 'take it easy' and you will enjoy seeing the coconut trees swaying in the wind in harmony with the columnar pine trees. Expect some friendly encounters with the lagoons animals too, turtles and exotic fish galore! Each island has its unique selling points: Ouvéa for the beauty of its beaches, Lifou for its immense bays fringed with columnar pine trees, Maré for its incredible quality of life. And the Isle of Pines where the colours and landscapes are just so beautiful, pictures don’t even do it justice.
Wherever your eye stops, the Isle of Pines remains a wonder. Cross Upi Bay on a traditional outrigger, and after a short walk through the forest, discover the famous natural swimming pool of Oro with a backdrop of columnar pine trees background.

Road-trip with the ‘Broussards’
Colonial remains Fort Teremba, The Museum of Bourail, the coffee Ecomuseum or the old mining village of Tiébaghi: The West Coast and the North offer a true journey back in time. Initiated by passionate people, the renovation and preservation of these sites are fantastic tourism assets to the region.
During colonization, the convicts and pionners largely settled on the West Coast of New Caledonia. Nowdays, their descendants are continuing a way of life geared towards livestock, agriculture and a real Wild West spirit. Moreover, outside of the remains of the colonial past, the West Coast and the Great North offer a genuine sensation of freedom and wilderness. A warm welcome. The west coast is rich of encounters. Visits the mines, farms or livestock farms. Here, most of the people are the heirs of the first settlers. Today they perpetuate the tradition and though their accommodation network (Bienvenue a la Ferme - Welcome to the farm), they will invite you to discover their unique way of life, connected to the land.
Leave early in the morning from Nouméa, to admire the sun rise. The road to the west coast, from Paitia to Poum is beautiful, with vast plains and the lagoon on the horizon. Here, the landscapes include grassy savannas dotted with niaoulis tree, and a beautiful mountain range with dense vegetation.
Living History. The road may not look that fancy but if you go off the beaten paths, you will discover striking landscapes, such as the Great Ferns Park, the green lung of the region. Further North, the remains of Fort Teremba dominate the arid plain of Uarai Bay. There is more evidence of the colonial past of New Caledonia on your way to the North.

The Kanak Garden
Whether you access it from the KonéTiwaka road or through the Fruits Bats Peak, the East Coast is a different world. Along the coastline, the road stretches for kilometers between lagoons & coconut trees, waterfalls & cliffs. At the heart of the Valleys, the Kanak tribes await you.
1
When staying with a tribe it is customary to provide a small gift as a mark of respect. A symbolic, yet necessary gesture that opens the doors , it is a sign of respect towards your hosts. Consisting of a piece of cloth, a small bank note, the customary gesture is a small gesture to thank your hosts.
Lush and generous The local guides will often take you off the beaten tracks and into the forest so you can get some well deserved freshness in the full of summer. There are no better chances to learn about the Kanak myths and legends and listen to the stories of the people of New Caledonia. On this East Coast road, Hienghene is one of the largest towns. With its rock formations coming straight out of the lagoon, including the famous Brooding Hen, you can explore these impressive rocks closely on a kayak or a boat tour. Further North, catch the free ferry to cross the Ouaième river and enjoy a swim under the beautiful waterfalls of Tao and Colnet, These are essential spots to visit as part of a getaway in Kanak land.
On the road that runs along the east coast, the salty scent of the sea mingles with the one of nature. Here, tribal life is prominent. It is a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the tribe and live in the slow pace of the Pacific, alternating hiking, bougna tasting, visit of vanilla plantations and exploration of the lagoon. A tribal stay allows you to discover and share customs and Pacific traditions .

At the heart of Adventure
Great Hike The region of the lakes of the Great South is the largest freshwater reserve of New Caledonia. The site registered, with the Ramsar Convention, consists of tree-dominated wetlands, shrub-dominated marshes, and permanent and seasonal rivers, streams, creeks and lakes, including a reservoir. It is essential for the conservation of the native fauna and flora. It supports vulnerable and endangered species essential for the maintenance of biological diversity within the New Caledonian Wetlands.
The Great South of New Caledonia is totally atypical from the rest of the Pacific. Here, the land offers many shades of red. The plant ecosystem is a few millions years old. The sky, the red soil and the lagoon simply highlight how spectacular this environment is. Best way to discover the South is to get active in nature. Hiking, mountain biking, kayaking or even swimming in the rivers and the many streams. There is no better way to make the most of it.
take a dip in the lagoon and with a little luck, swim with the turtles. The underwater Needle of Prony is a geological rarity that every diver must explore. In winter, the humpback whales are waiting to say hi!
At the Blue River Park, family day trips are extremely popular. You can walk, mountain bike or use the shuttle to discover an outstanding flora inherited directly from the time of the dinosaurs!
Further North, Thio is the last place of the the Great South before reaching the East Coast. Here, the landscape has been shaped by men and the mining history is told at the Mining Museum. Isolated from all major roads, the mine still managed to get a fair bit of traffic from tourism. Welcoming fresh water creeks, many shaded areas and beautiful vistas are scattered along the road.
Between mining and nature Along the beautiful Yaté lakes, you can reach Prony, a village, witness of the penitentiary past of New Caledonia. In the bay, Casy islet is the opportunity to take a short taxi boat ride. In the shadow of the columnar pine trees,

Other international airlines also serve New Caledonia with direct flights such as Qantas, Air New Zealand and Air Vanuatu. All international flights arrive in La Tontouta International Airport, 45 minutes from Nouméa.
The domestic airline Air Caledonie (Aircal) services the domestic routes between Magenta airport (Nouméa), and the North of the mainland and the Islands. The airline has a reservation office in the city and at Magenta airport, but you can also book online. The fleet is composed of three ATR 72-500s of 68 seats and 1 ATR 42500 aircraft (48 seats). Finally, the use of the mobile phone is prohibited for drivers. In New Caledonia, there are lots of petrol stations, however on the road that leads from Koumac to Hienghène, it is recommended to fill up your car as early as possible. You can also choose a guided tour of New Caledonia with a driver and use a taxi company when in town.
The majority of international car rental companies are represented in New Caledonia. The road network is well developed and people drive on the right hand side of the road. It is nevertheless advisable to rent a 4x4 if driving in the bush or off the main roads, as many of these secondary roads are dirt roads. Cars with a manual gearbox are most common, but some leasing companies also offer automatic transmission. To drive, your national driving license is enough (the international is not necessary).
By bus The public transport network offers multiple lines and options A network of intercity buses (RAI) provides 25 comfortable and reliable bus lines connecting the main cities of the mainland (Grande Terre). www.rai.nc In Nouméa, the Karuïa network ensures the connections from the different neighbourhoods with nine bus lines. www.karuiabus.nc There is also a regional bus network, to and from Nouméa, served by the network Carsud with eleven lines. www.carsud.nc
