n recent years, island weddings have become accessible to more couples looking to add an “exotic spin” to their special ceremony. Properly planned, an island wedding can not only save you upwards of $20,000 off the cost of a traditional wedding, it can also turn your island wedding day into an unforgettable “mini-vacation” for you and your guests. While some people get married at sunset by the water near their resort, others may choose to exchange their vows amidst the foliage of one of the botanical parks or one of The Bahamas’ charming historical churches and landmarks. Regardless of which setting is most amenable, there’s certainly a dream caribbean wedding location suitable to all tastes. There are plenty

Much of the cave diving in The Bahamas revolves around holes found inland that are connected to the sea. This makes for both an exciting and challenging diving experience. excellent reef system for shallow dives. several popular walls to dive. Among them: The Andros Wall, commonly called the “greatest of all Bahamas walls.” Here you’ll found unlimited sites that display mountains and canyons of every shape and size. The Bimini Wall offers a nearly continuous wall facing the Gulf Stream. The North Bimini Wall is just south of the entrance channel to North Bimini and begins in 120 feet of water. This is generally a drift dive for very experienced divers. To the south are numerous walls, such as those at South Cat Cay Wall, Victory Cays Dropoff and Riding Rock Wall. All of these are fish-filled spectacles that begin in 30- to 90-feet waters. The Exuma Wall is directly off Highbourne Cay, a drop-off that faces the Exuma Sound. This is a vertical wall, 75 feet deep.

zzzzzzz! To a fisherman, the sizzle of a fish burning line off a reel is the most exciting sound in the world. And from monstrous blue marlin slashing at a ballyhoo trolled over the deep blue to those silver streaks
of lightning known as bonefish zipping across sandy flats, the Out Islands offer year-round fishing vacation thrills. Fishermen are an obsessive lot, willing to travel the world in search of the ultimate angling experiences. Two very different fish top the list of the most sought after—bonefish, the ghost A F O of the flats, and blue marlin, ZLE E N THE SIZ I L the magnificent monster of G NIN R U B H the deep. Dozens of record-breaking fish have been caught in the Out Islands and they’ve been fished by some of most famous anglers of all time, including Ernest Hemingway and Michael Lerner, who started the International Game Fish Association—keeper of all fishing’s world records. Many of the most enthralling fishing scenes in Hemingway’s Old Man and the Sea and Islands in the Stream were directly taken from his experiences off Bimini.

Anglers enjoy Bahamas fishing in their own boats, crossing from Florida, or fly over and enjoy the services of the many excellent fishing guides and deep sea fishing charter boats. Fly fishermen stalk the flats (shallow areas) of the Abacos, Exumas, Andros, Acklins, Bimini, Cat Island, Eleuthera and Long Island for bonefish, a species as wary as they are fast. The best thing about Out Island bonefishing, though, is that if you’re off target with a cast and spook the fish, there’s no worries: Unlike some other fishing destinations where you may only get one or two shots at fish a day, in The Bahamas, another will be along soon. Your fishing guide will gauge the conditions and tide and get you close enough to cast to plenty of fish, whether they’re cruising in a small group of two or three or gathered together by the hundreds “mudding” the water as they feed. Serious fly fishermen should also
keep a crab fly close for shots at big permit, which can show at any time to get your heart racing. In deeper water over the reefs and drop offs, local fishermen will put you right on top of the best spots for jacks and snapper, which offer a great day of fishing fun for the whole family. Further out, in the indigo blue of the Gulf Stream off Bimini, the mile-deep Tongue of the Ocean alongside Andros, or off the Atlantic sides of the Abacos, Acklins, Exumas, Eleuthera, Cat and Long Island, lie the sleek strong pelagic fish. Fishing out here is big game trolling, where your eyes are peeled for the electrifying sight of a marlin’s bill or tuna’s
head crashing into the baits, and your ears are tuned to the snap of an outrigger and zzzzzz of the line peeling off as the fish bites and runs. Hook up with a big blue marlin or tuna, or get a wahoo, kingfish or bull dolphin on light tackle, and you’ll have your own Hemingway story to tell when you get home.
In deeper water ove r the reefs and drop offs, loca l fisherme will put y n ou the best s right on top of pots for ja cks and snapper, which off er a grea day of fis t hin whole fam g fun for the ily.
Whether you fly fish, spin cast or prefer to troll big game gear—or want to do all three—every one of the Out Islands of The Bahamas has a selection of flats, reefs and deep sea fishing drop offs with hungry fish waiting.

ith its own calm sea surrounded by charming islands, each worth a visit, the Abacos are known as one of the world’s top boating and sailing destinations. Not that those who prefer to sleep in a bed that doesn’t rock should look elsewhere: With quaint colonial towns, two golf courses, miles and miles of stellar beaches, great fishing and diving, and a wonderful selection of hotels and resorts and restaurants and bars, the Abacos are the most complete vacation destination in the Out Islands. The Abacos consists of its own 120-mile-long island chain. Great Abaco Island and Little Abaco serve as the “mainland,” with a string of barrier islands separating them from the Atlantic. Marsh Harbour
Great Abaco Island is home to Marsh Harbour, the “bright lights and big city” of the Out Islands. And to put that into perspective, Marsh Harbour has exactly one traffic light (the only operative one in all the Out Islands!). Along with a great selection of hotels, restaurants and bars, Marsh Harbour is also charter boat central, with several full-service marinas where you can dock your own boat or find a rental—both live aboard sailboats and powerboats are available. Treasure Cay
North of Marsh Harbour is Treasure Cay, a hotel, golf, marina and real estate development wrapped around a beach with the whitest, softest sand you’ve ever seen. To the south lies Little Harbour, a picturesque protected bay where you’ll find a small artist colony based around the Johnston family and Pete Johnston’s Pete’s Pub. Set out across the Sea of Abaco from Great Abaco Island and you can steer toward any one of a number of islands—each a vacation destination in its own right.

The Cays of Abaco
The Abacos were settled by English colonists who remained loyal to the crown after the American Revolutionary War, which is why the settlements like Hope Town on Elbow Cay and New Plymouth on Green Turtle Cay have the look of New England fishing towns, complete with picket fences and gingerbread trim—and with the distinctive Bahamian touch of pastel colors, of course. Hope Town
Hope Town is home to the famous candy-striped lighthouse, a favorite photo subject now, but quite controversial when it was under construction back in 1863. Up until then, the islands residents had The Out Islands of The Bahamas Destination Guide 2010 • 25

North of Elbow Cay, Man-OWar is another Loyalist settlement, a conservative “dry” island, and the Abacos’ boat-building center, with a wonderful naturally protected harbor and boat-fitting and sail shops. Treasure Cay Beach This renowned beach has some of the finest, whitest sand on earth fronting the brilliant turquoise of the Sea of Abaco, and was voted one of the best 10 Caribbean beaches in a Caribbean Travel and Life reader’s poll. Pelican Beach Villas Beach These private beachfront villas are located on a private peninsula on Great Abaco, just outside of Marsh Harbour.
Fishing
Fishing is huge, from the excellent bonefishing in Cherokee Sound and out in the “marls,” to the blue water big game species like marlin and tuna that prowl the Atlantic side within easy sight of the outer islands. Hope Town Lighthouse
Hope Town Lighthouse was built by the British Imperial Lighthouse Service to mark the reef of Elbow Cay during the 1860s. It is one of only two remaining lighthouse beacons saved from automation, thanks to residents, who have vigorously opposed it. Located on Elbow Cay, the historic 120 foot high candy-stripe lighthouse and the village of neat rows of gingerbread cottages painted varying pastel shades gives this settlement plenty of charm.
Schooner’s Landing Resort Beach Located on the tropical island of Man-O-War Cay, just a short ferry ride away from Great Abaco. Guana Cay Beach Guana Cay has an incredible seven-mile-long beach that spreads out below a tall dune that offers breathtaking views of the tropical Atlantic. Tahiti Beach On Elbow Cay, visitors in the know head to Tahiti Beach (accessible only on foot, bike or by boat), a secluded gem of soft white sand that arcs out into calm clear water ideal for swimming. Ocean Beach On the eastern end of Abaco, Ocean Beach has all the activity you’d expect of a tourist beachfront: windsurfing, diving, fishing and sailing. Enjoy beach bars and restaurants, local entertainment and lots of sand and sun. Sandy Point Beach Located on the southwest tip of Great Abaco. Sandy Point Beach is also renowned for its large number of seashells. Gilliam Bay Beach This beach is protected from the wind, and within a 15-minute walk from the main town of Green Turtle Cay.

descendents of Spanish Barbs. Visitors can tour the preserve and see Abaco Barb horses in their natural habitat. There are also resorts and locations where you can ride other horses on the Abacos Islands.

Treasure Cay is a quaint Bahamian village community located less than 200 miles from the east coast of Florida. “Breathtaking” is the only word for the worldrenowned Treasure Cay Beach, a 3.5-mile stretch of powdery white sand, matched only in brilliance by the turquoise water caressing its shore. Treasure Cay Hotel Resort & Marina has embraced the charm of this community. One feels like a local staying in Bahamian-style rooms and suites, eating authentic island cuisine in the resort’s restaurants or by sharing grocery store visits, shopping for beachwear, and breathing sweet scents from the bakery. Many visitors arrive by boat and enjoy the first-class amenities offered at the 150-slip marina. Rent a motor boat, find a private beach, go barefoot, or tour neighboring islands and cays. The best part is; one can relax and do nothing at all, or be adventurous and golf the 18-hole Dick Wilson designed course or try fishing Abaco’s legendary waters, snorkeling and diving. At Treasure Cay Hotel Resort & Marina, it’s all about enjoying island living.

A natural lure for fish and fishermen alike
T
hey say good things come in small packages, and truer words couldn’t be spoken about Acklins, a lesser known island that’s just 92 square miles and four miles across at its widest point. The island hugs the Bight of Acklins, a small but famous lagoon. When most people are researching dream fishing vacation packages, snorkeling trips or an excuse to enjoy a Bahamas holiday, they often forget about the many opportunities Acklins has to offer when compared with other major tourist destinations throughout The Bahamas. Far Away From Civilization
Although the population is scarce, with just over 400 residents, there is plenty to do on on Acklins. Searching for seclusion? Breathtaking beaches, unusual rock formations and scenic plant and arching ple are rese ackages, o e p n e h W np ing vacatio dream fish excuse to n a r trips o snorkeling day, they hamas holi enjoy a Ba many t about the offer often forge lins has to k c A s ie it n opportu
animal life make Acklins a nature lover’s dream. An exotic location, Acklins is for the traveler seeking solace. In other words, you’ll be making your own adventures on this quiet island with rugged terrain and little development. The charm of Acklins goes beyond the scenery, especially if you’re searching for a snorkeling trip or dream fishing vacation package. People come to Acklins for serious diving and snorkeling, and even more serious fishing. It may not be known as a tourist destination, but Acklins is home to bonefish and big game fishing alike. With more than 1,000 miles of shallow water, Acklins is famous for its bonefish flats and some of the best bonefish expeditions throughout The Bahamas. But why stop at fishing when you can also enjoy memorable snorkeling trips in The Bahamas? If you’re looking for a holiday that’s more about fishing, diving and snorkeling and less about shopping and socializing, Acklins is a place to get lost and love it.

Crooked Island
While it may be quiet and remote, Crooked Island is full of excitement and relaxation. The natural, pristine setting features miles of beautiful, untouched white sand beaches and other incredible sights. Birds frequent the cliffs and reefs. The limestone caves are magical. Coral gardens and reefs are waiting to be explored by divers. And the tidal flats and deep creeks are a fisherman’s dream come true.

Andros Explore the natural wonder
A
ll of the Out Islands boast abundant natural attractions, but Andros—the largest yet most sparsely developed of all The Bahamas—is the king when it comes to superlative natural experiences. It’s a great place for a laid-back beach getaway, wedding or honeymoon, but for eco travelers, kayakers, bird watchers, hikers, snorkelers, divers and fishermen the big island of The Bahamas is the ideal vacation destination. Andros is home to the third-largest barrier reef (after Australia’s Great Barrier and Central America’s Belize Barrier Reef ). A miledeep abyss—walled with coral and filled with whales, dolphin, marlin and all the wondrous reef animals —that’s called the Tongue of the Ocean, licks along Andros’ east coast. Underwater caves riddle the island, surfacing as mesmerizing blue holes that local legends say serve as lairs for the Lucsa, a sea monster that sucks the small en set off in ho Fly fisherm sw local guide boats with h the way throug know their on of cuts ed confusi criss-cross lit Andros els that sp and chann nd find the sections, a fish. into three lvery bone si h it w d e flats fill www.MyOutIslands.com
unwary down into the bottomless blue. Mangrove-lined wetlands cover huge swaths of Andros, intercut with endless mazes of channels that open onto bonefish flats and hidden beaches. Divers and snorkelers find endless fascination along the reef—going deep into the Tongue or exploring among the coral heads along the inside of the barrier reef —and at the openings to the blue holes that are found all over the island, in the middle of forests, out on flats, inside deep channels, near the reefs and amid the stony ancient reef that makes up much of the landscape (the entire 2,300square-mile island is made of porous limestone laid down by the sea and reef creatures). Birds find Andros an ideal stopover on their yearly migrations, when they join such local exotics as ibis, spoonbills, flamingos, hummingbirds, woodstars and the rare Bahama Parrot. Bird watchers who flock to the island find their quarry wading along the shore, roosting in the mangroves (where a silent, peaceful approach by kayak ensures close sightings) and hiding amid the coppice. Fly fishermen set off in small boats with experienced local guides who somehow know their way

through the criss-crossed confusion of cuts and channels that split Andros into three sections, and find the flats filled with silvery bonefish. For ocean big game fishermen, the Tongue beckons, with big snapper along the deep reef and pelagics like mahi-mahi, tuna, wahoo and marlin out in the blue just a bit further out. Hikers can get a combination natural history tour and cultural lesson by participating in a walk “backabush,” where inland blue holes appear amid the ancient forest and where a local guide will explain all the medicinal uses of the plants—knowledge that’s been handed down for generations.

Summer Set Beach Summer Set Beach gets its name from the millions of shells lining its shores that resemble the setting sun.
Nicholls’ Town Beach This half-mile strip of powder soft and pearl white sand is located on the northeast tip of North Andros.
Pleasant Bay Beach Located on the southern most tip of the island and home to the annual Coconut Festival held on Independence weekend.

When Andros visitors take a break from adventuring, there’s plenty of other things to do on the island, whether it’s picnicking at Morgan’s Bluff, Love Hill beach or Somerset beach, doing a rum shop crawl, or shopping for locally produced Androsian fabrics in Fresh Creek or baskets and wood carvings in Red Bay.
Native Colony Ruins
Andros Lighthouse
Androsia
Andros Lighthouse was built in 1892 to mark the southern entrance to the Fresh Creek channel. In 1952, three old canons were added in front of the Lighthouse and a tower built to the top. The canons came from the “Cottsac” Schooner, which wrecked on Stanyard Rock in the 1800s.
The famous batik fabric and garment manufacturing factory, Androsia, is located on Andros next to Lighthouse Club in Fresh Creek. Their brightly colored authentic Bahamian hand-dyed printed fabrics and clothing, inspired by the island environment and Bahamian culture, can be purchased all over The Bahamas. The proud staff at Androsia Batiks enjoys giving tours of the factory to visitors of Fresh Creek. www.androsia.com.
Diving
Andros is best known to scuba divers and snorkelers. Barrier Reef and Tongue of the Sea is the third largest barrier reef in the world measuring more than 140 miles long. It’s just a mile off the shores of Andros and is swimming with almost every variety of exotic fish species. The Tongue of the Ocean is a deep ocean trench that begins about 70 feet deep and plunges to more than 6,000 feet.
Native Colony Ruins is about a half mile south of Pleasant Harbour and includes eight historical stone buildings dating back to the 1930s. The buildings represent vintage Bahamian style architecture and are open for exploration. It’s unknown why the colony was abandoned and never inhabited.
Mariners Well
Morgan’s Cave
Mariners Well is a freshwater natural spring well, which got its name from locals. It’s said to have been used by pirates and before the 17th century and after that by sailing crewmen on the sponging vessels. Mariners Well sits between two saltwater lakes and Andros and is located on the property of a house built in the shape of the letter, “A.”
Pirate buffs and explorers can venture to Henry Morgan’s Cave at the northeastern point of Andros near the town of Morgan’s Bluff. While historians have never confirmed this cave was the hide out of the Caribbean’s most feared pirate, folklore speaks of buried treasure within. Signs along Queen’s Highway direct the public to the dark cavern full of bats and stalagmites. www.MyOutIslands.com

Bimini You’ll find more fishing, diving, sailing and more to do per square mile than anywhere in the Out Islands
B
imini is the true Island in the Stream, perched at the edge of a sheer underwater cliff that falls thousands of feet into the blue abyss. The Gulf Stream rushes north, washing past Bimini, feeding and warming its coral reefs and serving as a watery highway for everything from marlin to mantas, dolphin to sea turtles. Its unique location coupled with a roguish history makes Bimini the Out Islands’ favorite diving and fishing frontier outpost. For Ernest Hemingway, it was love at first sight when he docked his boat, Pilar, on Bimini back in the 1930s. He returned often after that, falling into the laid-back Bimini way of life that included swimming off the beach, snorkeling, trolling for monster game fish and yes, tossing back more than a few rums with the locals. Visitors today tend to follow the same routine with a few twists such as the extraordinary chance to y, it was Hemingwa For Ernest n he t sight whe love at firs on r, boat, Pila docked his s. 0 3 k in the 19 Bimini bac

interact with wild Atlantic spotted dolphins that gather north of the island, casting flies for bonefish on the flats of The Bahamas Bank, kayaking to the legendary “Fountain of Youth” (a natural spring amid the mangrove mud that pumps lithium and sulfur) and scuba diving on wrecks, reefs, “off the wall” or atop the mysterious Bimini Road that some believe is remnants of a man-made causeway perhaps built by Atlantis’ own civil engineers. Bimini—which is actually two small islands, North Bimini and South Bimini, connected by a shallow flat—has a fascinating history. As the closest Bahamian island to the U.S., Bimini served as a convenient offshore speakeasy and liquor store during prohibition. Rum runners stored their hooch both ashore and on a concrete Liberty ship called the Sapona that still rests where it grounded during a hurricane—it’s one of the Caribbean’s very best shallow-water wreck sites for snorkelers and divers. Hemingway is of course closely tied to Bimini’s history, leading the way for generations of fishermen, many of whom pilot their own boats the 50

across the Gulf Stream from Florida in order to follow in Papa’s bare footsteps and pit themselves against some of the world’s feistiest game fish—and against each other as they down rum at local watering holes like the famed and funky End of the World Bar. Beyond the fishing, diving and kayaking, Bimini offers both the quiet escape of empty beaches along and the boisterous camaraderie of sportsmen gathering at the marinas after a successful day on the water in the hot sun. Menus at the local restaurants like the Red Lion Pub and The Anchorage are, naturally, heavy on fresh seafood and Bahamian favorites like The Out Islands of The Bahamas Destination Guide 2010 • 47

Bimini cracked conch to keep you fueled up for further Bimini adventures. Floridians have the luxury of only a 50 mile trip to beautiful Bimini, one of the best places on Earth for divers, anglers and explorers. Best known for its sport fishing, one of the big draws for boaters out of Florida, mysterious Bimini also offers a lot of fun for visitors looking for a diverse and sometimes mystic or strange vacation experience. Bimini Road
In 1968, huge limestone blocks off the coast of North Bimini were discovered and are believed to have been once an undersea road to the Lost City of Atlantis. This halfmile stretch of neatly aligned relics, named the Bimini Road, draws divers and all kinds of opinions
about the origins of the “road.” It’s easy to explore, as it’s only about in 20 feet of water. Scuba divers, both novice and advanced, have numerous undersea sites to explore from several sunken Spanish galleons; Sapona, a WWI Freighter wreck, as well as the Bimini Wall, plummeting a heart thumping 4000 feet, just to name a few. Fountain of Youth
Ponce de Leon was thought to have stopped on Bimini in his search for the mythical Fountain of Youth in 1513. Some say he heard about it from an Indian tribe when he was governor of Puerto Rico. The Fountain of Youth is believed to exist somewhere in the flats and pools of South Bimini.
Dolphins
Many come to Bimini to encounter the friendly wild Atlantic spotted dolphins in the open ocean through human-dolphin connection excursions, with groups like Wildquest or Bill and Nowdla Keef ’s Bimini Undersea. The Healing Hole, just south of Easter Cay is said to provide calming Zen-like experiences to those who bathe in its fresh water sulfur spring pool.

Memory Ledge is said to produce a flood of life’s memories to those who lie on the ledge. Ernest Hemingway made his summer home in Bimini pursuing love, life and liquor.

Located in Alice Town, the Resort offers full marina facilities. Accommodations include Anchorage Guest Rooms, with double beds, a Bahama bed, and private balcony; Anchorage Suites, with two bedrooms with twin beds, a sitting room, and private balcony; and the Marlin Cottage, with three bedrooms with twin beds, a living room, two porches and kitchens. Though better known for its fishing, Bimini does offer several opportunities for sun seekers to relax on the sand. While it could hardly be considered crowded, the most popular beach can be found in Alice Town off Queen’s Highway. This quiet, continuous stretch of sand is known by its three sections—Spook Hill, Radio Beach and Blister Beach. You won’t find any commercial water sports operations here, but the sun, sand, swimming and snorkeling are excellent. Getting there: Fly into North Bimini Airport (NSB) or South Bimini Airport (BIM). Continental Connection runs twice-daily service from Ft. Lauderdale. Or take Bimini Breeze Express Ferry from Miami. Take bimini bus to resort ($3 per person) from NSB. Water taxi to hotel’s dock ($5 per person).

Cat Island Untainted by tourism, there is much to be discovered
A
bout 130 miles southeast of Nassau and Paradise Island near the Tropic of Cancer lies Cat Island. Explore uninhabited cays and hidden coves, attend a regatta, go on a shark dive, or hike a nature trail. Cat Island provides a year-round tropical beach vacation adventure. Divers like the coral reefs and blue holes, walls, caves and shipwrecks. Shark dives, dolphins, and stingrays are all part of the experience. While veteran divers know their way around the ocean floor, guides always are around to help beginners experience life under the sea. Cat Island is a fishhook-shaped island only 48 miles long and four miles across at the widest part. Yet, it offers plenty to do and see. Cotton plantation ruins are scattered around the island. The remains of slave huts dating back to the 1700s and Arawak Indian caves highest rnia is the e lv A t n u o M y at 206 the countr in n o ti a v le e he hill sea level. can be explored. Cat Island also prides itself on producing The Bahamas’ finest rake ’n scrape music and holds an annual festival dedicated to it. Mount Alvernia is the highest elevation in the country at 206 feet above sea level. The hill served as the hermitage of Father Jerome Hawes, who settled on The Bahamas island in 1939, where he built a miniature monastery and handcarved steps out of solid rock. Named after the pirate Arthur Catt, much of the island has not been developed, which provides a unique vacation for those who want to get away in a private, relaxing, laid-back environment. Of course, the pink beaches are popular, but so are the world-class diving adventures, snorkeling, and fishing. With 50 miles of rolling hills and miles of nature trails, you truly can experience a Bahamas island in its native setting. And at Cat Island, even the winters are a blazing 60 degrees, while in the summertime, temperatures linger around the mid-80s with a gentle breeze from the ocean. Stay in a remote and rustic village

setting and relax under thatchedroof tiki bars, make your vacation home a cottage right on the pink sand beach or select a fishing marina that caters to anglers on a quest for a big-game catch. Whatever you choose, there’s something to do and see on Cat Island. Of course, you may choose to do absolutely nothing at all. While Cat Island has superb diving off its south shore where there is an abundance of caves and coral canyons to traverse, remote Cat Island is hardly touched by tourism, let alone commercialism. For those who want a sense of true African-Bahamian culture however, Cat Island is the perfect Out Island vacation destination. The Out Islands of The Bahamas Destination Guide 2010 • 51
Cat Island Beaches Fernandez Bay Village Beach Located just North of the settlement of New Bight, at Fernandez Bay Village, this curvy tree lined white-sandy beach is contrasted by craggy ironshore that welcomes the spray of the surf.
Greenwood Beach Resort Beach Located in Port Howe, just north of Columbus point near the southeast tip of Cat Island, eight miles of pink sand beach overlooks the Atlantic Ocean.
Pigeon Cay Beach Club Beach The three-mile long white sand beach at Pigeon Cay Beach Club is located near the settlement of Bluff in the northern third of Cat Island.
Sammy T’s Beach Resort Beach This private, secluded beach is located within a cove in Bennett’s Harbour and is perfect for snorkeling, sailing or just lounging.
Old Bight Beach Located in the village of Old Bight, these five miles of pure white sand is perfect for a quiet walk, a picnic, beach combing or just sunbathing.
New Bight Beach The site of the annual Cat Island Regatta, New Bight Beach is a popular spot for locals, who have weekend dances and holiday picnics on the beach.
Other Cat Island beaches include: Fountain Bay Beach near Bridge Inn gets its name from an in-ground, natural fountain found in bushes near the bonefish flats. The mile-long beach ends in a shallow lagoon where you can snorkel in reefs right off the beach.
Cat Island is also perfect for those travelers looking to discover their own way off the beaten path and who do not need a site-seeing map to historical places, because there isn’t going to be a packaged tour guide here. Outsiders are few, making this island the perfect destination for quiet soul searching seclusion. The natural beauty of its rose colored beaches and dramatic cliffs add to its charm. Most of the historical landmarks are churches, plantation ruins and old buildings. Mt. Alvernia Hermitage
Eat a hearty breakfast then hike up the stone staircase of 206 feet to Mt. Alvernia Hermitage on Mount Alvernia, the highest point in The Bahamas. This small stone monastery built by hand by the architect hermit, Father Jerome, is at the peak and is worth the trek up this steep rocking incline, as well as the awe inspiring view.
Big Blue Hole
The monster said to live in Big Blue Hole located near Orange Creek, just off of Dickies Road is said to devour horses. This deep blue hole has strong undersea currents that flow through its caverns linking to the sea, where many objects like dead farm animals tossed into the lake ended up. This folklore still scares local fisherman from venturing too far in this freshwater lake. Dickie’s Road goes east to Griffin Bat Cave, once a hideout for slaves. St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church
Sitting atop a ridge along side the road in the settlement of Old Bight is St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church another beautifully crafted legacy built by Father Jerome, with amazing frescos, engravings and sculptures. To get a look inside see Mrs. Burrow’s, a local woman in the house across the street to let you in.
Armbrister Plantation
Just south of the Hermitage are the ruins of Armbrister Plantation. Armbrister Creek flows into a clear lake called “Boiling Point” or “Boiling Hole” whose tidal conditions cause bubbles and burps, the conditions which lead to folklore of a sea monster below its surface. Today, this is a great spot to spy rays and baby sharks and numerous birds that nest along its mangrove fringe. Mermaid Hole
Located in Bain Town is another lake. This 65 feet wide 10 feet deep lake called Mermaid Hole is where many believe a Mermaid lives amongst the four bed holes within that lead to underground caverns and passageways.

F
rom the pink sand beaches of North Eleuthera to the renaissance of the Cape in South Eleuthera, and points between, you could spend weeks on this slinky island and still not see all the natural beauty there is to explore. This pencil-thin island— it’s only two miles wide—has miles of pink and white sand beaches and turquoise crystal-clear water. Eleuthera is known for the high cliffs that fringe the eastern side of the island, where the Atlantic Ocean crashes onto the rock. Of course, this is as much noise as you’ll hear on this quiet, friendly island, where fishing, diving, snorkeling and taking it easy are the favorite pastimes of locals and visitors. Eleuthera is Greek for “freedom,” a fitting name for a Caribbean island that’s free from crowds or cruise ships or casinos. Eleuthera moves at a slower pace than most people are accustomed to. at home and stow your cell phone and blackberry away. Most won’t work here, anyway. Eleuthera Island is 110 miles long and is dotted with quaint, friendly fishing and colonial villages, such as Tarpum Bay, Bannerman Town, and Hatchet Bay. This Caribbean island also is home of the first republic in the “New World.” There are more natural wrecks here than any other island in the Bahamas, especially along The Devil’s Backbone, a shallow and jagged reef extending across the northern edge of Eleuthera. It has torn the bottom out of more vessels than any other reef in the nation. Eleuthera is also known for pineapple plantations. Locals serve up plenty of pineapple tarts, and the annual pineapple festival celebrates the pineapple heritage of The Bahamas. It’s the resorts, though that give Eleuthera its reputation for being among the friendliest places in the world. The secluded villas, upscale resorts, and quaint inns keep visitors coming back year after year, including members of the British royal family.

Spanish Wells
This mile-and-half-long island was discovered by Christopher Columbus and later visited by the legendary explorer who sought the “fountain of youth” Ponce De Leon. Home to some of the best fishermen in the country, 1800 hard working residents live, work, and play in this rollicking nautical fishing village. Take a step back in time and visit the island and its museum. Glass Window Bridge
About two miles east of Upper Bogue and north of Gregory Town at the narrowest part of Eleuthera, which is just 30 feet wide, are the striking rock formations that make up the Glass Window Bridge. The land here, is high on either side and abruptly falls away to nearly sea level almost dividing the island in The Out Islands of The Bahamas Destination Guide 2010 • 59
The Beaches of Eleuthera and Harbour Island Preacher’s Beach This beach is located minutes from North Eleuthera. Wind your way down a sandy grassy path overgrown with sea grapes to find a favorite picnic spot. The color of the water from this spot is heavenly.
Surfer’s Beach This beach is located two miles from Gregory Town. The hang ten set also knows that Eleuthera is a hot wave-riding destination, with Surfer’s Beach drawing sun-bleached guys and gals to its island break.
French Leave Beach One of the handfuls of pink sand beaches on Eleuthera, beautiful French Leave Beach is located just outside of Governor’s Harbour.
Ten Bay Beach This beach is located nine miles south of Governor’s Harbour in Savannah Sound. It is naturally shaded by large casuarina trees in the morning, but a sun lover’s paradise on a warm Bahamian afternoon.
Lighthouse Beach This beach is located in South Eleuthera near Cape Eleuthera and is known for its miles of unspoiled pink, soft, sandy beaches, as well as an old lighthouse located on a dramatic limestone promontory overlooking the ocean.
two You can stand in one spot and see the gray Atlantic Ocean to the west and Exuma Sound to the east. The Cow & The Bull
About a mile south of the Glass Window Bridge are two large boulders. On one side, the boulder looks like a bull with two cows, and on the other side, a bull with one cow. Both sets of boulders overlook the sea on side, and when the wind passes through, it roars like a bull. Hatchet Bay Cave
Just South of Surfer’s Beach is Hatchet Bay Cave. The cave is a mile long and filled with stalagmites and stalactites which will take on the appearance of underground Cathedrals in your torch light. Centuries old graffiti of charcoal signatures line the walls. It’s recommended to tour with a cave guide. Preachers Cave
A large unique cave about two miles east of Gene’s Bay. Founders who landed and were sheltered here made an alter and held vigils in the cave, giving it it’s namesake. 60 • The Out Islands of The Bahamas Destination Guide 2010
James Cistern Beach
The waves at James Cistern Beach sometimes reach 10 feet due to a brisk southerly wind makes this another great surfing site at Eleuthera. There is also a shipwreck just off shore, great for snorkeling when the water is calm. Ocean Hole/Rock Sound
People often sought out the healing powers of Ocean Hole, rumored to be a bottomless, natural limestone wonder on the south edge of Rock Sound in Eleuthera. Filled with tropical fish and turtles who greet visitors, the brackish water is said to have medicinal purposes. Partake at your own risk. Elvina’s Restaurant, Laundromat and Music Jam!
A hip Out Island bar where you can do your laundry, shoot some pool and enjoy some island jambalaya. Tuesdays and Fridays always feature great music with a large stage. Lenny Kravitz recently built his home and recording studio three miles north of Gregory Town, and if he’s on island he enjoys a good music jam with local entertainers. Sunday nites you can join www.MyOutIslands.com
in the potluck dinner and take in the live sounds of Bahamas King of Calypso recording artist, Dr. Seabreeze. Queen’s Bath’s
South of the Glass Window Bridge on the Atlantic Ocean side, are natural ocean baths carved out of the limestone. Dare only to venture into them when the ocean is calm. The Mission House
This historic home of a Methodist minister was built in the 1800s and has been recently restored as a museum, library and learning center. The Island School and Cape Eleuthera Institute
Come explore The Island School and Cape Eleuthera Institute (CEI) as part of a day trip. The Island School promotes conservation, sustainability, and natural resource management. Particpate in one of the exciting educational green tourism programs such as an Ocean Farm, Flats Discover, Coral Reef Surveys, Aquaponic Greens, Apex Predators-Sharks or take a general tour that includes an overview of their self sustainability projects and interacting with students and researchers. Tour suggested donation is $25. Schooner Cays
Take a 20-minute day sail excursion to your own private island for the day. These exotic uninhabited islands are some of the most beautiful places on earth. Scientists still study this newest collection of powder soft sandy islands, claiming the islands were formed only 700www.MyOutIslands.com
2900 years ago from the oceans currents, shifting sands and tidal bars. Diving and Snorkeling
There are more natural wrecks in Eleuthera than any other island in The Bahamas, especially along the Devil’s backbone, a shallow and jagged reef extending across the northern edge of Eleuthera. Current Cut is an exhilarating dive where you enjoy the sensation of being carried, pushed, forced, tumbled and flushed through the
narrow ‘cut’ that separates Current Island from Eleuthera. Scuba Diving magazine recently featured the Cape Eleuthera Island School “Cobia Fish Cage” experience, in 90 feet of water at the water’s edge. Neal Watson, President of the Bahama Dive Association said, “It may well be one of The Bahamas number one dive sites.” A nearby sunken drug plane and barge ship wrecks and swim through coral rocks the size of a house are just a few of the unique dive sites to be explored. nown simply as Briland to its residents, Harbour Island is often is called the Nantucket of the Caribbean. The colorfully painted New Englandstyle architecture on the island beautifully compliments the lush palms trees, flower-lined streets and pink sand beaches. This tiny world famous (and world class) island is a vacation magnet for the rich and famous, savvy travelers and beach vacation seekers alike. Approximately 3.5 miles long and only 1.5 miles wide, Harbour Island is located just off the tip of Eleuthera, separated by a narrow channel. Regular ferry service shuttles resort and hotels guests as well as daily visitors from North Eleuthera for a day of exploring and shopping the picturesque village of Dunmore Town. was formerly the capital of The Bahamas. Harbour Island is famous for its three-mile-long pink beach that runs the entire length of the island on its eastern side. The beach is protected by an outlying coral reef that makes the turquoise clear water one of the safest and most alluring swimming and snorkeling spots in The Bahamas. Adventure vacationers can also seek out these waters for great diving opportunities. Current Cut, for example, offers one of the most thrilling high-current dives in the Caribbean. Horseback riding on Pink Sands Beach is a popular activity for honeymooners. Harbour Island was ranked “The Best Island in the Caribbean” by Travel Leisure magazine and readers of the elite travel magazine rated this tiny gem of The Bahamas Out Islands number one among the islands of the Caribbean, Bahamas and Bermuda. Some say it was once an almond tree, while others say it’s a species of pine. Regardless, everyone seems to agree that it arrived in Harbour Island after Hurricane Andrew in 1992. How it arrived is up for debate though. Curiously enough, the tree arrived upright and during high tides, it even moves around a bit. The Out Islands of The Bahamas Destination Guide 2010 • 67

he Exumas are a 120-milelong island chain-withinthe-chain, scattered in a long line extending north toward New Providence from Great Exuma. The Cays are the most exotic of the Out Islands, a collection of tiny jewels set in the aquamarine and sapphire of the most beautiful water you’ve ever imagined. Flying down the Exuma Cays, looking down on the tiny jewel-like islands and every shade of blue on blue on blue possible where the crystal-clear tropical Atlantic pours over the deep cuts between the cays and the constantly shifting sandbars that look like meditative sand paintings has been named one of the top ten things you absolutely must do in the Caribbean. The area is so precious—it’s reefs and island environments so pristine—that the Bahamian government set aside a 176-square-mile section as the Exuma Cays Land exotic of re the most The Cays a ction of nds, a colle arine the Out Isla the aquam in t se ls e utiful tiny jew e most bea th f o e ir h p and sap gined. e ever ima water you’v

and Sea Park, one of the world’s most successful marine parks. The anchor of the Exumas is Great Exuma. Here, you’ll find the laid back capital Georgetown and a great selection of casual Bahamian restaurants like Iva Bowes’, Big D’s Conch Shack, Eddie’s Edgewater and Peace & Plenty. Hotels here range from the only five-star resort in The Bahamas (the Four Seasons Emerald Bay complete with a Greg Norman-designed golf course) to condo-resorts to locally-owned fishing lodges. Be sure to cross the demarcation line of the Tropic of Cancer, which runs through Georgetown, just to say you did. A short boat ride from Great Exuma is a barrier cay that protects the main island from the Atlantic. Stocking Island features spectacular views from atop its high bluff and a series of idyllic beaches separated by limestone promontories. On the lee side, the Chat & Chill is a classic beach bar with great food that seems to attract every boater in the area. A must see for divers and snorkelers just south of Stocking Island is Mystery Cave, a 400 feet deep blue hole, which begins at 15 feet below the surface, but rapidly drops to 100 feet.

Tropic of Cancer Beach Located on Little Exuma, it has been called one of the prettiest in the Exuma chain.
Three Sisters Beach This expanse of white sand beach offers breathtaking views of the waters and the legendary rocky trio, Three Sisters Rock.
Jolly Hall Beach A few minutes walk from Palm Bay Beach Resort is this sandy, crescent-shaped beautiful beach.
Coco Plum Beach Just a short walk away from Four Seasons Exuma Resort, this white sand beach is dotted with palms.
Hamburger Beach/ Volley Ball Beach Be sure to stop by Dora’s conch & hamburger stand.
Shroud Cay The beautiful white sand beach on this archipelago is a stark contrast from the expanse of mangrove vegetation that surrounds it.
Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park This ecological preserve and wildlife refuge encompasses 176 square miles of pristine waters and beaches.
Beaches of Staniel Cay Two secluded beaches, Ho Tai beach and Pirate’s beach with dunes and sea oats; incredible colors and reefs just off-shore.
Saddle Cay A horseshoe-shaped curve near the Exumas’ northern tip that can be reached only by boat.
Stocking Island One of the finest white-sandy beaches in The Bahamas.
Three Sisters Rock
North of George Town a mile offshore across from Mt. Thompson is an odd trio of large rocks jutting up from the sea, called Three Sisters Rock. Town lore explains the appearance of the rocks after three heart broken sisters drowned swimming out to sea to their wayfaring loves. Three Sisters Reef, nearby is another nice spot off the beautiful beach to go snorkeling. The Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park
The Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park is the first of its kind in the world and is famous for its pristine beauty, outstanding anchorages and breathtaking marine environment. Under its transparent turquoise waters are beautiful natural gardens of coral teeming with fish and lobster. Within the boundaries of the Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park are several public and private cays. It is the first marine fishery reserve in the Caribbean and is accessible only by boat. The rarest living creatures of the park are stromatolites, blue-green, reef-forming algae, which are the oldest living evidence of life on Earth; some of them on Exuma Island and Stocking Island are be-

lieved to be 2,000 years old. Fossil stromatolites date back 3.5 billion years. Allan’s Cay
Allan’s Cay is one of the few places on the Out Islands where you can see iguanas. Looks can be deceiving. While they may look fierce, iguanas actually are a gentle lizard. Swimming Pigs
A highlight for many vacationers is the famous swimming pigs at tiny Major Cay, a short boat ride from Staniel Cay. Not only is it a great place for snorkeling and beach bumming, it’s a hoot to frolic in the surf with the pigs. Remember to bring a snack for the swimming swine. Thunderball Grotto
Thunderball Grotto is another Bahamian gem just northwest of Staniel Cay. Two James Bond scenes were filmed here, as well as the movie Splash and Into the Blue, starring Jessica Alba. Divers love this gin-clear watered cavern for the dancing sun and even moonlight that filters through the holes in the grotto’s ceiling, highlighting the fish beneath. www.MyOutIslands.com

H
ome to one of the oldest dive operations in The Bahamas, Long Island has numerous shallow and deep dive sites, but is best known for Dean’s Blue Hole, the deepest recorded blue hole in The Bahamas (over 600 feet). The western shoreline of the 80-mile long island has soft sandy beaches capped with rich green mangroves. With the Atlantic Ocean on the east, Long Island is a haven for fishing, sailing, and yachting. A spine of ancient reefs gives the island two faces: the dramatic cliffs and caves of the east coast that front the crashing Atlantic, and the soft, sandy edged lee side which slides calmly into the Bahamas Bank. Shark diving, vast schools of fish around towering coral bommies, and the spectacular wall of nearby Conception Island are serious draws for diving enthusiasts, while the angling for bonefish and big pelagics is enough to keep any fisherman thrilled. est dive e of the old s, Long n o to e m Ho ama in The Bah operations hallow and s s u umero n n s a h d n Isla best know ites, but is s e st iv e d p e p e e de the d Blue Hole, for Dean’s The Bahain lue hole b d e rd o c re 600 feet). mas (over www.MyOutIslands.com
Cape Santa Maria Beach has been recognized by beach lovers and travel writers alike as one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Long Island is also home to Columbus Point, a memorial to Christopher Columbus perched on a hill at the island’s northern most tip where visitors can experience outstanding oceanic views. The island beckons visitors for world-class bonefishing and thrilling encounters with sea life, where divers and snorkelers explore gardens, caves, and old plantation ruins. But Long Island is also a quiet island dotted with quaint, friendly villages and miles of uninterrupted beaches that offer soft pink sand changing to yellow-white. Long Island Museum
Stop in to the Long Island Museum to brush up on the history, culture and customs of Long Island which is dotted with plantation ruins, pretty villages, historic cottages and groupings of tiny pristine white and bright blue Gothic churches at each settlement. The western coast side enjoys plenty of shallow azure bays perfect for bird watching, ocean kayaking or just splashing and swimming around. There are numerous beautiful and secluded tropical island beaches each with its own quiet personality to suit a visitor’s perfect private beach vacation or wedding destination. Salt Pond
Just twenty miles south of Stella Maris sits Salt Pond, a thriving commercial business section for Long Island’s salt production and lobster and fish processing plants.

The Beaches of Long Island Columbus Harbour Said to be the location where explorer Christopher Columbus anchored his boat and rowed ashore. The protected shallow inner bay is great for kids to play and for family Snorkeling and shelling expeditions. The harbour also features two outer beaches a half-mile further out in the shallows of the Atlantic.
Stella Maris Beach Stunning black ironshore formations stop the crashing waves in their tracks and send plumes of white water splashing 20 feet skyward. The sand on the beach is somewhat coarse, but the subtle pink hue is a beautiful contrast to the Atlantic and its fickle shades of turquoise and blue. Wade and sunbathe in the natural pools of warm water heated by Bahamian sun.
Cape Santa Maria Bay & Beach Vacationers looking for the best beach in the Caribbean are never disappointed when they discover the breathtaking beauty of this beach. The seemingly endless white powder sand is heavenly beneath your feet as you walk along the shore lined with wispy casuarina trees. It’s no wonder that Columbus and his ships were drawn to this beautiful spot.
Love Beaches Affectionately known as the Love Beaches, this secluded stretch of pink sand is actually four beaches, highlighted by a large natural swimming pool.
Millerton School Beach Located on the west coast, this mile-long beach has a secluded bay, lots of small shells and soft white sand made for strolling barefoot.
Deal’s Beach This roadside, tree-lined beach is complete with a barbecue grill, table and benches, perfect for a family outing.

Visitors can explore the ancient cave system, view historical cavern drawings, and see the remains and relics of the early history of The Bahamas.
Dunmore Town
Dean’s Blue Hole
Dunmore Town offers authentic craft abd artwork stands and centuries-old churches. Named after aptly named Dunmore Plantation, you can tour the ruins and relics of the old estate and the former slave plantation house built of limestone. Drawings depicting the sailboats used during the plantation era grace the walls of the former estate which used to grow sisal, cotton and pineapples. The pillars, thought to have been the remaining gateposts to the plantation, can be seen about a mile from the historical estate.
Clarence Town is a peaceful settlement that is very near superb snorkeling and dive sites. This leads to a true jewel, Dean’s Blue Hole, one of the world’s deepest blue holes (660ft) and the world’s eighth-largest underwater cavern. The vestibule of the aquamarine hole opens up to a lovely Caribbean bay or cove flanked by magnificent white tropical beaches. Near Dean’s, is Turtle Cove, which has a fantastic tropical beach and turquoise shallows.
Hamilton’s Cave
Artifacts and prehistoric cave drawings from the Lucayan Indian tribe—the first known settlers in The Bahamas—were discovered in Hamilton’s Cave. Visitors can explore the ancient cave system, view historical cavern drawings, and see the remains and relics of the early history of The Bahamas.
Christopher Columbus Memorial
On the northern most tip of the island is a 15-foot-tall stone obelisk memorial erected to Christopher Columbus. This area provides some stunning views and bright green exotic seas with some of the best Caribbean snorkeling and scuba diving abound.
