I am extremely excited about joining an airline that was just recognized as the Air Transport World “Regional Airline of the Year”

s the new President and CEO of Silver Airways, I am extremely excited about joining an airline that was just recognized as the Air Transport World “Regional Airline of the Year” for 2013. That said, it is clear to me that we still have a great deal of work to do to make our airline one of the best in terms of customer service and on-time performance, so we can ensure we will be your #1 choice for flights in Florida, The Bahamas, and other cities where we are flying today. To that end, my goal as the proverbial “new sheriff” in town will be to utilize my 27-plus years of experience in the aviation and airline industry as a business

executive, attorney, and pilot to provide our over 850 dedicated team members with the tools, training, and support they need to ensure that you, our guest, get to and from your destination safely, on time, with great customer service—all at a fair price. On the subject of new tools and technology, in early June, we added a significant new enhancement to our service offering when we started using the world-renowned Sabre reservations system. This new system allows us to better manage customer reservations and to market and sell our flights directly to you, our customers. We currently fly more than 60,000 flights per year to destinations in the Eastern, mid-Atlantic, and Southern regions of the U.S. In Florida, we serve more gateways with more daily flights than any other airline; in The Bahamas, we fly more flights than any other U.S. carrier to this country of more than 700 islands. Given that breadth and depth of service, we are confident that our new reservations system will enhance your booking experience and give you

more options when you are making travel reservations. Before I sign off, I would like to thank you for your business and loyalty. In May, we celebrated our second anniversary as a new airline, and since 2011, we have made remarkable strides in terms of growth, modernization, and service. In particular, we have more than doubled the size of our route network and added twenty-five advanced, comfortable, CO2 and fuelefficient 34-seat Saab 340B+ aircraft to our fleet. Finally, as I noted above, your satisfaction is important to me, and I am committed to hearing what is working and what we can improve here at Silver Airways, so that we can make our airline even better. So please email me at CEO@gosilver. com or our customer services department at customercare@gosilver.com, if you have any thoughts or feedback for us. Thank you again and best regards, Sincerely, David H. Pflieger, Jr. President and CEO Silver Airways

or a whopping $350,000, you can have your own laboratory-grown hamburger patty by the end of the year. Dutch biologist Mark Post, who produced the first patty by multiplying animal cells in a petri-dish, is offering a bite of the burger in order to attract funding for his potentially world-changing research. The burger, comprised of about 20,000 thin strips of cultured muscle tissue, represents a breakthrough in “in vitro” meat—a field of research that is expected to grow as scientists search for new avenues of sustainable food production to address an increased demand for food brought on by the world’s growing population. Previous taste tests have indicated that the laboratory-produced meat tastes “reasonably good” and that there are no expected adverse effects on the health of people who consume the meat. In fact, the fat-free, bacteria-free meat may prove to be even healthier than traditionally produced meat.

Tesla’s Motor S Brings Style to the Electric Car Market

I

n a market in which electric cars are touted more for their financial or economic benefits than for their performance or looks, Tesla Motors is looking to change that perception with its Motor S. The first electric sports car, Tesla’s Motor S is

designed to compete with the likes of BMW and Mercedes Benz. At sales of more than 400 cars per week, and a price tag of $90,000, the energyconscious get up and go car is earning revenue for its manufacturer and praise from those who believe that

energy savings and beauty can go hand in hand. The dazzling Motor S is a 416 horsepower sedan with the ability to reach from 0 – 60 mph in 3.9 seconds. Most impressively, the Motor S only burns about 6 cents worth of energy per quarter mile in drag racing conditions and can travel over 300 miles on a single charge. The good news is Tesla expects the pricing of its vehicles to drop in coming years as the advanced technology in its cars becomes cheaper to produce.

Music and history are equally important in Macon, as if they held hands telling the story of a people. Every city has an identity. Macon calls itself the ‘Song and Soul of the South.’ Holding on to the song part of it has been the biggest challenge. Though so many songs about Georgia are indelibly etched upon our memory —who can forget Ray Charles’ Georgia on My Mind—the Georgia Music Hall of Fame closed in 2011. The building is now part of Mercer University’s School of Medicine. Still, the music lives on, the cherry blossom trees bloom, the Historic Register preserves its buildings and time passes ever so gently in this middle city of Georgia, a place so steeped in the past that the biggest surprise is how attuned its population is to the present. If ever a Starbucks were to serve a mint julep instead of a chai tea latte, this could be the place. But tell them not to rush it. WEATHER DELAY Hurricane Jeanne interrupted wedding plans for Alistair and Harriet McDonald who rebuilt CurlyTails even as they started the foundation of their own lives. Today, it’s an Abaco eatery phenomenon.

T

he day Harriet and Alistair McDonald were due to get married, an unexpected guest blew into town. With almost no warning, Category 3 Hurricane Jeanne with winds

up to 130 miles an hour and torrential rain veered direction and slammed into the northwest Bahamas, taking direct aim at Marsh Harbour, Abaco, where the would-be wedding couple awaited with family that had flown in from as far away as Australia for what was supposed to be the happiest day of Harriett and Alistair’s life. Roofs tore off like shredded paper in the wind. Seven hundred locals and visitors took shelter in a school, and Harriett, Alistair and the family from everywhere hunkered down in Harriett’s small cottage on one of Marsh Harbour’s

once colorful and now flooded streets. Waiting out the hurricane’s wrath was taking its toll. The clock ticked. The days grew longer, the cottage smaller, patience thinner. “His mother wasn’t leaving until she made sure her son was married,” says Harriet, a tall, slim striking woman with twinkling eyes.” At the end of a week, she had to go home so we knew it was now or never.

Don’t Miss ”The hotel where they were supposed to marry had been destroyed. Harriett put visions of the wedding gown, tiered cake and sit-down fancy reception out of her mind. They rounded up a justice of the peace, told the family, including his mom from Australia and her mom from Nassau, Bahamas, to gather on the front porch. In the garden, a lone yellow rose had survived. Alistair put it in Harriett’s hair, they exchanged vows and with family juggling between tears and laughter in the midst of what looked like a war zone, the newlyweds and 10 guests shared a single piece of chocolate cake. If the wedding were anything but the expected, it was the start of a life that ironically led to putting Marsh Harbour back on the map for munchies. the perfect partner. With more than a decade in restaurant management, the competent woman knew it was an opportunity of a lifetime to create something from scratch and make it their own in an enviable location with great view of the harbor, new marina, ferry boats coming and going and enough sailboat masts to make you realize that a lot of folks still think the going is as good as the getting there. Harriet and Alistair poured their heart into the project, developing premises and menu, hiring and training staff. A year later, they opened the two-story Curly Tails. “That was the scariest day of our lives,” says Alistair. “We were swamped, slammed,” says Harriet. “Everybody in Marsh Harbour showed up and everything stopped working.” They looked at the non-stop hungry eager crowds and each other and juggled a broken POS (point of sale) cash register system, too little ice and supplies, a newborn and unprepared staff despite all the training exercises. And then the horror of back-to-back hurricanes (Jeanne appeared three weeks after Frances) that had knocked down the old building and the opening night blues passed, and Curly Tails, the chic waterfront eatery was suddenly Marsh Harbour’s hot new in place to eat, drink, to see and be seen in this most unpretentious Bahamian town, to meet friends and hang out. Heineken beer in one hand, a book in the other. Another was catching up on golfing news. Trays of local favorites came out and were devoured almost as fast—tasty conch fritters, a jerk grouper in a very light pastry (yes, of course, I had to try it), little balls of lobster and macaroni and cheese. Despite the fried fritter type appeteasers, Curly Tails’ real specialty is the imaginative combinations of fresh seafood, vegetables and local fruit—a Caribbean-Asian-Bahamian fusion that sends taste buds into happy overtime. Endive salad is served with fresh chunked pineapple, a pecancrusted goat cheese and a dressing so light it almost tickles. With seating for 120 downstairs and 60 upstairs, the restaurant still manages to feel intimate. Half the menu changes every year and there is always something

new to try like crab and cheddar stuffed mushrooms or the tastiest of all, a conch bruschetta with caper aioli sauce, a bruschetta so good it’s in a class of its own. Often there is live music. There are a hundred reasons to visit Marsh Harbour—the people, waters, sunsets. And Curly Tails which, by the way, takes its name from all those curly-tailed lizards you’ll see on the island. Don’t worry. They won’t end up in your salad, but don’t be surprised if that newborn who was squirming around in Mama’s arms when the restaurant opened almost eight years ago brings you one and asks you to name it. You’ve been accepted as part of the family. Curly Tails is open six days a week, closed Tuesdays, from 11 am on. Check them out on Facebook.

Yes, that Guy Harvey— the same man whose dripping signature and vibrant sharks, docile dolphins, slow-swimming sea turtles, big game fish in natural settings have sold millions of dollars of merchandise—is the Guy Harvey whose art serves a greater purpose. Dr. Guy Harvey, the man behind the brand, is the same Guy Harvey as the man behind so many efforts to bring awareness to how fragile the marine environment is, how threatened many species dependent on the health of those reefs is, how

overfishing without regard to sustainable populations is changing the face of the ocean even if the only effect we as consumers feel is in our pocketbook. A 10th generation Jamaican, Harvey grew up respecting the sea. He graduated from Aberdeen University in Scotland with high honors and a degree in Marine Biology and went on to earn a Ph.D. in fisheries management at the University of the West Indies where he also taught. He had a way of bringing marine wildlife to life,” said Ferreira, who followed in the professor’s footsteps in the early part of his own career, spending years in fisheries management before studying law and specializing in environmental law. “Dr. Harvey has gone on to teach a wider world the beauty of the undersea world through his art and his conservation practices and efforts.” It was those conservation practices that caused Harvey to invest hundreds of hours diving reefs in the Cayman Islands, videotaping, studying and editing a recently released film made about the dwindling Nassau Grouper population. In June, he was showing the film, lending his star power, to a Bahamas National Trust event in Nassau, a oneday workshop made possible by a grant from the Moore Bahamas Foundation. Harvey called the cause urgent. Only Harvey could look at the fish with the gray and blonde stripes, a mouth so wide it defies dental common sense and an ability to hide from a spear like

He spoke of the great migration at reproduction season, calling the phenomenon of aggregate spawning “one of the miracles of nature, one of the natural wonders of the ocean world.” Today, those aggregate spawning sites are in danger because they attract fishermen who pounce on the grouper who gather in one spot, not by the dozens, but hundreds, whipped into a frenzy, easy prey, resulting in big bucks for fishermen more driven by today’s catch than tomorrow’s sustainability. Urging The Bahamas to make a closed grouper season law rather than discussion for policy on an annual basis, Harvey and others say it is the only way to slow the steady decline of the population. Once, there were thousands of adults at aggregate spawning sites, not only larger in number but greater in size. Now, he and other experts, including scientists at the Bahamas National Trust, estimate that only one percent of the grouper population that existed 50 years ago remains. Since Cayman adopted the closed season legislation in 2003, that island nation has seen a 20% increase

in young grouper. “In Florida and Bermuda, they are saying they will never recover, but The Bahamas still has a window of opportunity,” says Harvey who founded the Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation in 2008. Recipient of numerous conservation and marine species preservation awards, founder of the Guy Harvey Research Institute at Nova Southeastern University, creator of the giant wall mural at Fort Lauderdale

International Airport and the artist whose work appears on Florida lotto tickets this summer with part proceeds going to preserve the marine environment, there’s a lot more to this Guy than meets the eye. Not that anyone is complaining about the pleasure of what meets the eye when it’s a Guy Harvey work of art—and purpose.

Backups Aren’t Sexy... Until You Need Them

Two ways to protect your files and save your memories by Thomas Boyd

T

here’s a lot of talk these days about how to keep your computer safe. Anti-virus scanners, spam blockers, firewalls, and adult content filters have become topics for modern conversation. Everything, from the newspaper on your driveway to the summer blockbuster on the silver screen, is sending the message that your computer isn’t safe; evil people want to invade your computer and use it to rule

the world. But what about old fashioned problems like your hard drive crashing or a power surge causing corruption in your files? Hackers and virus attacks are good drama for entertainers and the media, but the main problem facing computer users isn’t something that gets much press. A lot of computers have virus problems, but every hard drive will fail if you use it long enough.

36 • Volume 2, Issue 2 | www.silverairways.com

Worth Protecting Let’s talk about what you want to protect: your data. Data. It sounds kind of abstract doesn’t it? You might even ask yourself what kind of valuable data you could possibly have on your computer. These days when we think of valuable data, most of us think about credit card numbers, passwords, and social security numbers. But there’s more than just the security related bits.

It’s easy to forget just how much important data winds up on your computer over time. Which files on your computer would you hate to lose the most? Those pictures of your sister’s new baby, or the photos Kevin sent you from basic training? Perhaps it’s the only known copy of your mom’s secret recipe for the perfect spaghetti sauce or your own resume. Maybe it’s the e-mail addresses of your friends and family

Living Well

you’ve accumulated over the years, or your 12-yearold daughter’s first efforts to write a book. It’s all data, it’s all important to you and sometimes it’s irreplaceable. What can you do to protect these precious bits and bytes for the day that disaster strikes? Have a backup. As computer users, it’s not something we think of often. We’re not reminded by the media that making backups of our files is an important part of digital life. We trust our computer to keep on working like it always has. Backups? We promise we’ll do it tomorrow for sure. Then, when you least expect it, your data is gone. Unlike virus tools that often help you fix a problem after it happens, backups are something you want to do before the problem occurs.

Time for Modern Tools For decades, making a backup meant sitting in front of a computer and inserting disks as they each filled up. After a while, it was CDs and then DVDs and thumb drives. But it was still a largely manual and time-consuming process that was tedious and prone to human error. Forgetting to run backups is the biggest problem. These days we have more convenient options, new approaches that make the process more reliable. If you value your digital life and memories and you want your data secured

and stored somewhere safe, you should look into online solutions. In the past few years, online storage has gotten so cheap that there are over a dozen companies trying to entice you to save your data on their systems. Let’s talk about two of them and how they differ.

CrashPlan CrashPlan is a free, fully featured backup tool. You install it on your computer, decide where it’s going to backup your data, pick a backup schedule and then ignore it while it does its job quietly in the background. CrashPlan can backup to another drive in your computer, a thumb drive or a network drive at your house. Quietly chugging along each day or each week, keeping your data safe. CrashPlan offers the ability to backup your data to their servers, keeping it safe even from a natural disaster at your home. For as little as $2 a month for one computer, you can have 10GB of storage space on their servers to save your data. That’s roughly 220,000 pictures depending on the resolution. Since you will probably never even notice that it’s working, CrashPlan will send you a monthly e-mail with your backup results and information. Pros: Can backup anything on your PC including system data and address book settings. Cons: Small fee for storage.

Dropbox Dropbox is a different kind of solution that doesn’t even promote itself as a backup service. Rather it’s a file sharing service where you have an account and can access your files from anywhere. You install Dropbox on your computer and designate a location for your Dropbox folder. Any files or folders you place into the Dropbox folder gets copied up to their servers quietly in the background. At any time you can log in from another computer, or even your cell phone and access your files. Dropbox gives each free user 2GB of storage which you can expand to 18GB by inviting friends. Pros: Can be used to share files with family and friends, can access your files anywhere, more free storage. Cons: Have to organize your data to place your files into the Dropbox folder, won’t backup address books and other system data, not all data easily moves to the Dropbox folder. You can decide for yourself which option fits your need best. A more comprehensive backup solution, or a file sharing system that makes it easy to backup and share data with friends. Most tools for online backups will be similar to one or the other of these. Since backups are all about securing your files against disaster, be sure to

Which files on your computer would you hate to lose the most? Those pictures of your sister’s new baby, or the photos Kevin sent you from basic training? evaluate tools using the following list: • If the tool requires me to copy files to a location, will I always remember? • How stable is the company? Will they be here next year when I need to restore my data? • How much do I really need to backup? Companies offer tiered pricing plans if you have larger needs. • Do I need to share files with others, or among multiple PCs that I use? • Is a file sharing system better for me? It’s possible to run several free tools that perform online backups, so even if one goes out of business, you can fall back on the others. Just be aware of how much data you’re backing up to each of them and how it could affect your ISPs data caps. Thomas Boyd has worked as a programmer and administrator in IT for 30 years on systems ranging from mainframes to smartphones, and after hours provides tech support to his parents, aunts and uncles, nieces and neighbors. Currently he works at the largest transaction data processing company in the U.S.

andals Resorts has earned its reputation as a leader in romantic, Luxury Included® vacations for two people in love. The company boasts 14 resorts throughout the Caribbean, with two of their most elegant resorts situated in The Bahamas—one in Nassau, and another in Great Exuma. Sandals Resorts are not cookie-cutter allinclusives, so each Bahamian resort offers its own distinct atmosphere and charm. The common denominators shared by both resorts are top-notch service and luxurious amenities amid breathtakingly beautiful, romantic settings. Both Sandals Royal Bahamian Spa Resort & Offshore Island and Sandals Emerald Bay, Great Exuma, Bahamas, offer outstanding vacation experiences in The Bahamas to a wide range of travelers.

The Balmoral Tower at Sandals Royal Bahamian

Sandals Royal Bahamian Spa Resort & Offshore Island: Sandals Royal Bahamian not only exudes European grandeur and sophistication, it’s actually in the resort’s DNA. In 1946, the original property known as the Balmoral Club was created to serve as the playground for many Royal friends of the then Duke and Duchess of Windsor. Transformed into Sandals Royal Bahamian, but still maintaining its old world charm, this chic resort radiates understated elegance. Boasting authentic Bahamian architecture, the resort provides guests with an array of sophisticated luxuries, from opulent suites to a private island.

Resort Amenities & Attractions Situated upon 10,000 square-feet of The Bahamas’ most impressive freshwater pools, Sandals Royal Bahamian looks

out upon the turquoise blue water. Providing an upscale experience for guests, the resort includes its very own private island, Sandals Island, reachable in minutes by boat, sailboat or kayak, where guests can enjoy two secluded beaches, a pool, whirlpool, swim-up bar, outdoor spa facilities and the region’s best seafood house, Stewfish. With more than 400 luxurious rooms and suites, there are accommodations to suit every budget and taste. Guests can indulge in every imaginable amenity including their own butler and VIP chauffeur driven Rolls Royce and Mercedes 500 series airport transportation for select suite categories. Guests can spend their vacation participating in daily land and watersport activities, feasting at any of the 10 gourmet dining options, enjoying nightly entertainment, or simply relaxing at any of the seven pools, including a scuba certification pool, and six whirlpools.

Those looking to unwind will enjoy Sandals Royal Bahamian’s award-winning Red Lane® spa with three spa facilities and an array of treatment options to choose from. The recently renovated main spa offers a warm, traditional European feel with Caribbean flair complete with saunas, showers, and treatment rooms, while the day spa caters to bridal needs, and the Zen Garden on Sandals Island offers four additional treatment gazebos specially designed for couples to enjoy therapies in nearly total isolation. Guests residing in the Balmoral Tower can even be treated to a massage on their beautiful balconies facing the sea.

Introducing the Balmoral Tower Following a $17 million renovation in 2012, Sandals Royal Bahamian unveiled a refined Balmoral Tower with a lighter, contemporary look and even more luxury. All 144 rooms experienced a complete transformation both inside and out with new elegant tiled flooring, furniture, 42-inch plasma televisions, bar areas, bathrooms and more. The most impressive updates to the resort accommodations might be the addition of 35 balconies to beachfront rooms and suites in the Balmoral Tower, offering direct ocean views. Additionally, the 11 new Bahamian Beachfront Walkout Suites allow guests to walk directly from private patios onto the pool deck, complete with newly-opened romantic lounge areas featuring fire pits. “We’re thrilled to offer guests of Sandals Royal Bahamian even more luxury after the resort’s outstanding renovation,” said Gordon “Butch” Stewart, Chairman of Sandals Resorts International. “We continue to invest in our products to ensure that our guests have the best Luxury Included® vacation experience possible, and I am proud of the incredible work we did with the Balmoral Tower.”

and Great Exuma through a variety of environmental, educational, and culturally-enriching programs,” said Adam Stewart, President of the Sandals Foundation and CEO of Sandals Resorts International. In The Bahamas, the Sandals Foundation has forged partnerships and implemented a broad range of initiatives to carry out their mission. As part of its commitment to environmental protection, the Sandals Foundation has assisted in the research of lionfish and worked to bring insight to this invasive species through public preparation and cooking displays to help encourage the “Eat them to beat them” program. Additionally, the Foundation pledged to pay for the transportation of 3,000 New Providence students to visit the Bonefish Pond in an effort to learn about the protected wetlands with its “The Ride to Save the Wetlands” program in partnership with Experimental Education and continues to work with The Bahamas National Trust to assist in establishing a comprehensive and integrated advocacy campaign for a sustainable conch fishery. To help improve local education, many students are awarded each year with scholarship to cover costs of tuition, uniforms, books and annual medicals as part of the Sandals Foundation Care for Kids Scholarship Program. They also have access to mentorship and tutoring, seeing to their personal and academic development. The Foundation also offers teacher training programs. To date, over 150 teachers in the Bahamas have shown stellar improvements in math grades and overall attitudes towards math. Most recently, the 3rd annual Sandals Foundationsponsored Bahamas Trike-a-Thon attracted four hundred children and their parents to raise money for research and treatment of pediatric cancer and other catastrophic childhood diseases at St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital. To date, the Foundation has raised $30,000 in support of St. Jude’s. Sandals Resorts believes it is crucial to promote environmental and cultural preservation initiatives. As a leader within the Caribbean hospitality industry, Sandals continues to set sustainability standards and encourage other resorts and hotels to follow in its footsteps and create similar initiatives.

sk Lashan, who’s been driving a taxi seven days a week except at Christmas or for the birth of a child, what the best, coolest thing about Bimini is and she says without blinking an eye, the fishnin’. “There’s dolphin now and they catching some tuna and you can get yourself some wahoo,” she volunteers. “Yup, it’s the fishnin’ for sure.” Despite the fancy new resorts and the casino that just opened and the hoopla and the hullabaloo about a cruise ship dock that some say will boost the economy and others believe will

change the island beyond recognition, Bimini in the northern Bahamas remains at heart an overgrown fishing village. This is the old haunt of Ernest Hemingway, the place that immortalized rugged man versus giant game fish as the indisputable symbol of manhood and adventure. While time tries to march on in Bimini, the clock is stuck on fishnin’ time. It’s the heart and soul of this island and its people, the reason visitors return as homeowners, the only island in The Bahamas many Floridians who dash the 50 miles by boat between nations will ever know.

I’m discovering just how important the waters are to Biminites and those who crowd the docks in the friendliest of ways. I’m at Bimini Sands in South Bimini. It’s a Sunday afternoon and the place is abuzz with activity all centered around—you guessed it—fishing. Folks are coming in on their boats or on a boat they rented or from a trip with Neal Watson’s Bimini Scuba Center. Boats are coming and going, docking, people cleaning fish, hosing down, a dizzying turnover all in a place where no one is in any sort of hurry. It’s the fish and the atmosphere

around fishnin’ that makes the difference. It’s not just what you see. It’s what you don’t. No one is on an iPad or a cell phone. Kids have fishing rods in their hands, sun in their face, tans on their backs. I secretly peek at my BlackBerry for e-mails and hide it quickly before someone catches me. It’s probably only fair to warn you if you don’t like fish, if you don’t like to see or smell or cook fish, or you’d rather a snow-capped mountain than miles of powdery sand beach in 80 degree weather nearly yearround, Bimini might not be the best place for you. But if you like endless clear

turquoise seas and you like to catch, smell, filet, cook, eat or even talk fish, it’s hard to find a better place than Bimini. Bimini Sands was a dream that broke ground nearly 20 years ago, slumbered for nearly a decade, and was reawakened by two fishing

buddies who became partners in the project, Rupert Roberts, Jr., a supermarket mogul from Nassau, and the father-son team of Frank Cooney, Sr., and Frank Cooney, Jr., both American success stories from far-ranging fields. Cooney, Sr. and Roberts met fishing in The Bahamas and

to this day, says Cooney, Jr., there’s nothing his father would rather do than pack a cooler, throw the lines on the dock and head out for a good day’s fishing. “He could live off a cooler and on a boat,” says Frank Jr., who now finds himself far from the silicon valley of California and on this night when two staff members are out because of a local funeral, buzzing about in the kitchen of Bimini Twist, down a gravel road, at the end of a strip that once

served as the perfect drug drop in the bad old days and has now been added to the resort’s offers, restored and catapulted to the hottest, inplace for casual fare, fresh fish and excellent sushi in this most unlikely of places. Today, Bimini Sands is nearing completion, with 214, 1- to 4-bedroom units (most available as hotel rentals), a new infinity pool, pool bar, marina, dockmaster’s office, ship’s store, and Neal Watson’s Bimini Scuba Center. A mile away is Mackey’s Sand Bar, aptly named for its sand floor, and the Bimini Twist restaurant. It’s so casual and comfortable that dressing up for dinner on a Saturday night doesn’t go much beyond showering. Getting to the restaurants and bar at the end of that long gravel road is an adventure itself—a bouncy ride aboard a bus painted every shade of red, green, yellow and black, with open windows for air conditioning. There are other aspects to Bimini besides fishing and cooking and eating fish and talking about fish. The island is alive with ecotourism offerings. There’s a new nature trail right at Bimini Sands and lots of flat island land along the waterfront for cycling. There’s kayaking, paddleboarding and between the hotel’s activities center, staffed by marine scientists Katie Grudecki and Grant Johnson, and Neal Watson’s Bimini Scuba Center, there are activities on land and

in the water—swimming, snorkeling, scuba, Big Animal Safaris that include swimming with dolphins, sharks and stingrays and guided tours to the Healing Hole. For a small island, Bimini offers a rich history. There’s the legend of the Great Isaac Lighthouse, 18 nautical miles north where three bodies of water collide and the 152-foot lighthouse, originally built for the Great London Exhibition of 1852, guides fishing boats through the waters of the Bermuda Triangle, Visible for 23 miles, the lighthouse might harbor other secrets of mysterious disappearances,

52 • Volume 2, Issue 2 | www.silverairways.com

including of two lighthouse keepers who went missing without a trace. But the fishing is especially good around the lighthouse. The reality is that no matter what else you try to find interesting about Bimini, even a touch of Martin Luther King history, it always comes back to fishing. Fish are everywhere. In my hotel room with the neat upstairs loft for a second room, the main wall is awash with would-be stuffed mahimahi. Hanging next to them is the giant lure that supposedly attracted them to the line. On the wall next to the comfy couch

where I am writing on my laptop are no fewer than 35 framed photos of folks with fish or lying on a boat presumably after a long day’s fishing or hoisting a beer, probably toasting to the next day’s fishing. There are two Biminis, North Bimini and South Bimini, named for obvious reasons. I’m in the South, where folks from housekeepers to American guests, boat operators to local fishermen are worried about what’s happening in the North. That’s where massive change is taking place. It started with the development of a luxury

Square Grouper Tiki Bar

resort called Bimini Bay. Dredging affected the marine environment. More recently, a casino opened and a cruise ship dock is being constructed to deliver up to 1500 passengers at a clip heading to the casino. Many Biminites fear it will change the island forever. Americans who own property in South Bimini are joining the fight to save the land and waters they have come to love and respect. Marine artist John Townsend and friends are prepared to do whatever they can to save the Bimini they love. They want to hang on to the present and fear the future is rushing

at this little island where folks say no one is listening to what they want—the preservation of a life that turns at its own pace, wakes when it wants to, fishes when the fish are running, works to pay the bills but not for an end unto itself. Meantime, in South Bimini brothers Scott and Tim Dryer and their friend Vince Gibbs on Scott’s 32foot Century Gray Ghost have just landed a 71-lb amberjack using a spinning rod. They are tired, fired up, happy, summoning their last burst of energy to hold up the prize for the picture I want to take. “We come over once a year regardless

of what’s happening in the world and by the grace of God,” says Tim. “But this was so great we are going to try to come twice.” ”There’s a sense of community,” says Cooney, Jr. “It’s a unique place with a storied past. It’s tight knit, seven square miles, 1500 people. We all take care of each other.” A look at the miniature yellow pages shows just how tight knit it is. One 5x7 page, printed front and back, contains all the important numbers you need to know to get by in Bimini. Aside from various government offices, one bank, one insurance

company, two churches, there’s Sue and Joy’s Variety Store, Uncle Tanny’s Golf Cart Rental, Stuart Conch Salad Stand, Bonefish Tommy, and Bimini Bread & Catering. The sand is soft and the infinity pool inviting, but thinking about that sweet Bimini Bread made my mouth water. Life is gentle here, and as I walk toward where I will ask for steamed tuna and grits, I will do my best to honor this island in the sun and leave my BlackBerry in my pocket without even stealing a glance.

Hope Meets

History Abaco's hopetown harbour lodge where history meets fine french wine & languid days stretch into endless sunsets

T

here's something iconic and sweet about this little 3-story hotel in Elbow Cay, Abaco, the way it sits, poised atop a ridge with a view of the famed red and white candy-striped Hopetown lighthouse on one side and the wide expanse of the Atlantic Ocean on the other. Even the name—Hopetown Harbour Lodge—sets it apart. After all, how many

hotels not dedicated to the sport of hunting or fishing call themselves a lodge these days? Even as the number of resorts mushrooms, it's increasingly hard to find those which understand the secret ingredient that makes guests feel at home, not a trained smile and countertop chocolate chip cookie, but something that says we remember your name and what you like, we welcome you with warmth and offer our hospitality with the personal touch you deserve. When a hotel gets that right, and combines it with today's expectations —consistent wi-fi, silent air conditioning, in-room fridge with icemaker, pool, private beach—it's a place to be treasured. Add historic charm, fine French wine in the wine cellar, and coffee service oceanfront at daybreak, it's a treasure to be savored—a secret you are not sure you want to keep

or share. For Hopetown Harbour Lodge, the secret is already out. It's number one among Abaco hotels and resorts on TripAdvisor and recently another celeb (think smiley) and her mom spent days basking in its simple, guilty pleasures.

To understand what makes Hopetown Harbour Lodge a classic that appeals to old and new money, to folks longing for a warm beach in winter, to newlyweds who want a destination wedding and honeymoon in one perfect place, to celebrities who

hope people will know who they are and not care, you have to look at the history. Hopetown on Elbow Cay, Abaco is an island off an island accessible by plane, short taxi hop and ferry ride, all on regular schedules, easy and fun. Originally settled in the

late 1700s by one Wyannie Malone, her five sons and a daughter from Charleston, S.C., and her late husband's business partner, Jacob Adams, loyal subjects to the British monarchy, Hopetown wears its history as a badge of honor. You'd be hard-pressed to find a

single visitor who has not spent memorable hours at the tiny, fascinating Wyannie Malone Museum. "The people of Hopetown feel and preserve its history," says hotelier Paul Thompson, Hopetown Harbour Lodge manager. "It's their legacy and their ticket to doing business." He points to the architecture, a replica of a fishing village, narrow streets, no tall buildings, no traffic lights, golf cart favored transportation, and the dedication of volunteers, who ensure that children 56 • Volume 2, Issue 2 | www.silverairways.com

with special needs have special education attention, a tight-knit community of ex-pats and locals who together have pooled efforts to lead campaigns in environmental protection in a country where there is what someone recently called "an illusion of plenty" in the marine environment. Thompson points with pride to how Hopetown has managed to marry its past to present. That successful interweaving of history, hope and personal touch lends Hopetown Harbour Lodge a cachet.

The lodge that developed with the community includes Butterfly House. Now an elegant historic beachside rental that sleeps six with commanding views from the second story sundeck, the original home dates back to 1890 when Edwin Malone built it in preparation for his wedding later that year. It was purchased by the original Harbour Lodge in the 1950s to add to its accommodations. Meantime, in 1948, Brigadier Thomas Robbins built another home on

an adjoining property, a house so grand by Abaco standards that he was able to supply electricity from his generator to other islanders who did not get power until the 1970s. Later, that house, too, became part of the lodge with new additions turning it from residence to hotel when a Nassau family named Maury took it over in the 1960s. Today, the Hopetown Harbour Lodge has 25 rooms, 12 in the main section, 11 cottages and cabanas and the gracious historic house. For more

than a dozen years after the Nassau family sold the property, the lodge was owned and operated by the Ketays, who made numerous upgrades and many friends in the community. In May 2012, a group of Bahamian businessmen headed by Peter Andrews from Nassau purchased the property and began what they are calling "the journey that preserves the best of the past with the ultimate in casual luxury of the future." Room makeovers are planned, food and beverage

choices have expanded (try the lobster salad for lunch or the house special, Salad Danielle, curried walnut chicken with pineapple) and those 4,600 bottles of French wine—hand-picked by Andrews during a trip to the region—all a sign that it is possible to succeed by honoring the charm of the past and marrying it with the romance and luxury of the present.
