GENRE Urban Contemporary Gospel CD TITLE Seasons Vol. 1 FEATURED SINGLE Her Pain RELEASE DATE February 1, 2011 LABEL Liberal Souls Music Group

“My music is pretty much relationship music where I write about the love and adornment between God and myself. I love to write music in the voice of God as I think that when you hear a song as if it’s God singing to you, the message is more likely to be seriously effective.”

a Liberal Soul (a.k.a. Charles Dixon) is a native of the Washington, D.C. area and has burst on to the scene in first class fashion with his debut CD Seasons Vol. 1, offering the world awesome music for God. His smooth, urban style blends a unique and refreshing sound to inspirational lyrics. His love for music began when he was a young boy. At the age of seven, he had mastered the art of mimicking the voices of several different artists, heard over the radio airwaves. He sang in several choirs and as a young man, he was a highly sought after solo artist, widely recognized for his anointed smooth style of vocal prowess and his ability to hit the extremely difficult, note of high “C”. Often compared to the crooners of old, it was apparent that Charles possessed a gift of vocal delivery to be desired. Much to his surprise, the call on his life was recognized while in a place not so desirable and at his lowest point spiritually. Charles accredits his love for God and his desire to always put God first, to his mother, the late Cora Dixon. She would consistently see to it that he stayed in church and she always stressed the importance of staying in the Word of God. 6

Charles is blessed with a plethora of gifts, such as, phenomenal songwriting, arranging, and production abilities. These great gifts, coupled with the anointing will surely serve a blow to the kingdom of darkness, while setting the perfect platform for the smooth sound of a gospel message, delivered with ease. Each song was birthed out of the Holy Spirit and is saturated with power from on high. Listeners will be encouraged by the richness of God’s Word and the wisdom that filters through Charles. His musical influences range from old school artists such as Darryl Coley, Rev. James Moore, Frank Williams, Commissioned and the new urban sounds of J Moss, Tonex, Deitrick Haddon, Marvin Sapp and Keith Floyd. Although Charles is making his solo debut, he is no stranger to the gospel community. He has ministered on the Bobby Jones Gospel Showcase and the GMWA convention and has shared the stage with quite a few of gospel’s finest such as Fred Hammond, Yolanda Adams, Hezekiah Walker, Mary Mary, Michelle Williams, Dawkins & Dawkins, Trinitee 5:7, John P. Kee, Luther Barnes, Rizen , and Ted and Sheri just to name a few. For more information on Da Liberal Soul go to www.daliberalsoul.com.

GENRE Jazz Infused Contemporary CD TITLE I Hear You FEATURED SINGLE I Hear You, Make a Way, Sovereign RELEASE DATE April 17, 2010 LABEL TOC Records

“I’m an artist by happenstance but I’m a minister by calling. This is my heart. This is my walk. This is my life. Getting the message out simply means I’m sharing the good news of the gospel and I understand the purpose in it.” eanna Ranson knows how to elegantly and intricately weave her beautiful soprano vocals around almost any tune, and her CD is clear evidence of her vocal prowess. The sophomore release on her new record label is a collection of uplifting and sometimes gut-wrenching gospel tunes. Produced, arranged and written by the artist herself, I Hear You is delivered by an exceptionally talented songstress. Many will love the jazz styling of He’s Good and Awesome and the R&B feel of the captivating In Love and the mellow Trust in Him. Mercy & Kindness are given a soulful twist on the CD as is the project’s title tune I Hear You. The CD includes music composed by industry veterans Vernell “Dooder” Mincey, MontKeyz (Paul Reynolds) and Rick Williams. Hailing from Glassboro, New Jersey, Deanna’s singing career began at the age of 5 as a member of her family’s gospel group, The Heavenly Children. She had strong female influences in her life and in ministry through her mother Evangelist Jean Johnson, her grandmother Pastor Dolcie Alston and Godmother Pastor Essie Robinson. She practically grew up between the pews and as a member of the group, traveled extensively. It wasn’t long before they were approached with numerous offers to record. The opportunities didn’t pan out for the group, but offers from the R&B world were coming Deanna’s way and the lure of a lucrative lifestyle was enticing. “It seemed like I got oh so close to something happening on the R&B side,” explains Deanna. “But things just never worked out, although I did get to meet some great people. For me, it didn’t work and I had to come back home”.

www.airplay360.com

After a difficult time in her life where she lost her mother and subsequently lost her voice due to goiters on her vocal chords, Deanna was told she would never sing again. Through God’s healing, she regained her voice. Then came her call to preach and ordination as an evangelist and later, her debut CD Never Say Never. Years later, after finishing her Master’s of Business Administration degree, and while recording her new release, I Hear You, she was dealt with three major blows within months of each other: an assault, the loss of a baby and the death of her husband of only 15 months. “If it hadn’t been for the Lord on my side, I don’t know where I would be,” says Deanna. “The storms of life is where ‘I Hear You’ was born.” Although she’s gone through more than most, she continues to have much to sing about. She’s thrilled about her new CD and believes it will touch all who listen. During her impressive career, Deanna has shared the stage with artists such as Yolanda Adams, Dorinda Clark Cole, Lee Williams and the Spiritual QC’s and the late Rev. Timothy Wright. From the start of her music career until now, Deanna has grown as an artist, as a woman and as a Christian. Even from her first CD to the second, she’s matured. Her singing, her songwriting, is all a reflection of her trials and of the faithfulness of the One who brought her through. For more information on Deanna visit her online at www.deannaransom.com .

Are You Ready for the INTERNATIONAL STAGE? BY VERNICE WATSON and MILTON ALLEN

he market for gospel music and ministry is global in scope. The United States of America is the world’s biggest music market but there is a whole world out there that wants to hear, see and buy Praise and Worship, Contemporary Gospel, Holy Hip-Hop and ministry products. Technology and solid broadband infrastructure overseas make the international market more accessible. International distribution of product, promotional tours and a strong Internet presence will likely lead to touring opportunities overseas.

rules are readily available online. Make sure you understand the requirements for each territory you visit. Some countries require you to obtain a work visa, depending on how long you will be in that country. Others require a “letter of invitation” from the promoter or church. Still, others require proof of vaccinations.

Create Your Own Network As your music and ministry gains exposure and notoriety here in the U.S., your very first tool for international exposure is your website and the social networking pages that drive traffic to them. What percentage of your visitors and bloggers are from overseas? How many online purchases have you had from other countries? This is where you start to build your own network by creating a dialogue and networking through these contacts.

• Payments – A mutual payment schedule must be worked out that will suit both the promoter and the artist. The artist must have a guarantee they will be paid in full for their services and the promoter has to have a guarantee that the artist will perform. When an agent is involved in the process, this is a bit easier with the agent being the responsible party for making sure all terms are met. For example, a promoter can send a deposit of 50 percent. An agent can require that the remaining 50 percent is received before the artist departs for the U.S. Yet, the agent may hold those funds until the artist returns. There are many different payment scenarios. Having a good agent insures this process will go smoothly. • Travel – All travel should be confirmed four weeks prior to the performance date. Many countries require travel documents to get visas.

Distribute Your Product Work with an experienced international distributor here in the U.S. Be prepared to ship samples of your products to their distributors overseas. Be prepared to service international distributors and media overseas via Internet and mail. Secure the Right Booking Agent Secure a booking agent with international credentials. Make sure they are proactive and have the means to promote you to their buyers. Many agents will insist on an exclusive agreement. If possible, make the agreement non-exclusive until such time that a mutual relationship of trust, activity, communication and results are achieved. Getting Ready All traveling members of the group must have up-todate passports. International rules vary from country to country. Information on visas, inoculations and other 8

Legal Brief Why Register with the U.S. Copyright Office? BY ANGELA D. GREEN, ESQ

common question that I am asked is, “Does the Poor Man’s Copyright provide the author legal protection?” For those of you who do not know, the Poor Man’s Copyright is taking a created work and mailing it to yourself. It is commonly believed that by mailing the work, the U.S. Postal Service will provide an official date and prove ownership. The short answer to that question is always, “NO.” However, in truth, it is really not that simple. According to U.S. Copyright Law, copyrights are granted automatically the moment when the work is created. So, as it relates to music, the moment the lyrics are written down on paper, the song is recorded on any device or reduced to sheet music, that author has copyrights. Therefore, in preparing your work for the Poor Man’s Copyright, you receive your copyrights. You can save the postage. With that being the case, the next question is, “Why do I need to register with the U.S. Copyright Office?” To that question my answer is, “Registration Has its Privileges.” Here are the top three reasons why you should register your music with the U.S. Copyright Office. 1. It establishes a public record of your copyright claim to the work. 2. It gives you the right to file a copyright infringement lawsuit in court. 3. If you are successful in an infringement lawsuit, you may be entitled to statutory damages of not less than $750 or more than $30,000.00 dollars per infringement. In the case of willful infringement the court can increase the damages to $150,000.00 per infringement. The bottom line is, filing your work with the U. S. Copyright Office will provide you with the tools you need to PROTECT and DEFEND the work you have created. You never know when God will allow one of your songs to earn a million dollars. Don’t you think that’s worth a $45 investment? The articles and/or legal tips provided by Angela Green, Esq. are for informational purposes only, concerning general legal principles. You should consult your legal counsel for answers to specific legal questions. rammy and Stellar Award winning powerhouse singer Beverly Crawford is bringing her message of promise and hope to not only the gospel and church community but the world. After six years as a member and lead singer of Bobby Jones Gospel’s New Life Singers, Beverly has become a successful solo artist with her own repertoire of chart-topping songs like Praise Jehovah, Marvelous and He’s Done Enough. Her most recent project Live from Los Angeles Vol. 2 on JDI Records features the current Top 10 single It’s About Time For a Miracle. In an interview with Airplay 360, Beverly talks about the message in her music and even the recent tweets from Chad Ochocinco of the Cincinnati Bengals praising Beverly and her song It’s About Time For a Miracle. LM: So, we’ve all heard that Ochocinco tweeted that he loved your song It’s About Time For a Miracle and that it helped his team win a game. BC: Yes, people started calling us from all over the place saying, “Chad Ochocinco is trying to get in touch with you.” Actually, he was trying to get in touch with me again because they did win the game and he said he had listened to It’s About Time For a Miracle all day long and it just got in his spirit and they won the game. But (me and Ochocinco) haven’t hooked up yet but I’m sure we will at some point. LM: I know that you co-pastor along with your husband Todd at Gainesville Family Worship Center in Gainesville, FL. How do you balance your music ministry and being co-pastor? BC: First, I was like, “Lord how am I going to work this?” But when God calls you, he always makes provision for you and works things out. With my husband being the senior pastor, that helps too. And then we have a wonderful associate minister that covers for us and the people love her. It balances out so good. We have some wonderful people that understand what we do. So, we know that the house (of worship) is taken care of and that the ministry is going on. LM: How involved is your husband Todd in your ministry? BC: Well, he is my manager, my bodyguard, my lover and all that good stuff all at once. We’ve married almost 29 years. LM: So, how did you become a part of Bobby Jones’ New Life Singers? www.airplay360.com

BC: My husband made a videotape of me and my sisters singing and sent it out to different record companies and to Bobby Jones Gospel and, believe it or not, Bobby Jones was the only one that responded. He was considering my sister because she was leading a song. Then, he said when I came out, “That’s the one I want right there.” Then later, Bobby Jones said, “Beverly, if it’s okay with your husband and your father and your sisters and brothers, I would like you to join me and be one of New Life Singers.” LM: What do you consider to be the primary message you’re trying to convey in your music? BC: The Lord has said to me that “people are bringing their problems and looking to you when you come that they’re believing that there is going to be a song, that there’s going to be a word that you’re going to sing that is going to be a blessing to people.” That has been my prayer for a long time, that God I give everything to you. You give it to me and then it blesses the people. I believe that my music is to bring joy and hope and make people feel like at that point of them giving up that they will hold on to what they believe and know that they can make it a little while longer. LM: With a message like that what next for you? BC: Well, we had developed a partnership working together with JDI. After I did all the big record labels, we decided to sign with JDI Records and it’s been very good for us. Eventually, I will start my own label but it’s been a blessing working with JDI. Your Finances How to Fulfill Your Destiny, Maintain Financial Success BY NICOLE B. SIMPSON, CFP ecently in the Presidential State of the Union Address, President Obama declared that America does big things, America dares to dream. Innovation and creative ideas is what separates our great country from the remainder of the world. He implored that we begin to challenge ourselves to produce greatness. If the opportunity to succeed in America is evident to all, shouldn’t the children of God lead the pack in business success? Our gifts and skills come directly from God and we have been given a business plan that guarantees we can accomplish great things. If that is the case, then why is our production lagging behind the rest of the world? When a child of God dares to dream, they must apply the biblical principles that will ensure their gift has been given back to God through their service. It is not enough to compartmentalize God’s place in our life. Therefore, here are the steps to guide you to fulfill your destiny and maintain financial success at the same time.

Natural ability is the greatest starting point for individuals looking to prosper. (Jeremiah 29:11-14) Write the vision. This step separates most individuals. People have wonderful ideas and thoughts that if developed, could turn into a successful business. However, the idea is never given serious consideration because it isn’t written down. Writing the vision makes it real, tangible and available to be developed and shared with others who can add to it. (Habakkuk 2:1-3) Work. You have a job to do. It requires research, dedication to the assignment and effort on your part. Expecting God to do more and only declaring your faith will open doors and windows of opportunity represents laziness. You will have God’s favor upon you as you work. Waiting for opportunity to knock on your front door will leave you with nothing. (James 2:14-26)

Stir up the gifts! Whenever you can work in a field where your passion lies, you have separated yourself from the remainder of the world. Your passion will drive you to excel, prompting opportunities for significant growth and major promotion, even if you are not an independent business owner. (II Timothy 1:6-7)

Pay it forward. Being in the position to sow seeds produces a harvest that you could never measure. When you support others in their business and ministries, people are more willing to help you. Your reputation will precede you. (2 Corinthians 9:6-15)

Seek God’s counsel for your life plan. If God is the great architect of your life, then get your instructions of how to proceed successfully.

ike most independent artists, Marjane` plays an integral role in every aspect of marketing her music. The Stellar Award-nominated singer, songwriter is reaching far beyond her Los Angeles homestead to get her music heard. In fact, Marjane` is bending the ears of fans in England, Spain, Portugal and South Africa. Some international radio stations have proven receptive to Marjane` and admirers who discovered her on the Internet are requesting the urban-style gospel that Marjane` ministers. They simply love it. Just recently, Marjane`s video for the single Get Your Breakthrough was added to rotation of the Gospel Music Channel’s Midnight Voices and BET’s Video Gospel. Marjane` shares her challenges as well as blessings as an Indie and how she’s moving beyond her hometown to reach the world. LM: When did you begin to notice that your fanbase was growing? Marjane`: We didn’t start getting buzz until we got a Stellar Award nomination and then when we got Ensound Awards. Then, we started getting more terrestrial airplay. We were already burning up Internet. So, people started asking, “Who is she?” LM: Do you think that your location in Los Angeles has helped you? Marjane`: Being in Los Angeles is probably both good and bad for me. I am an independent artist with no representation from a major record label so sometimes doors are harder to open for me. But with God, if he wants it open, it’s gonna open. Being here, it’s a blessing because there’s a lot of connections in California but unfortunately, it’s a little territorial as well so I have to push my way through with God’s help and his favor. I’ve heard from hundreds of people that “If you lived on the East Coast, you would be as big as Mary Mary or Kierra Sheard.” I hear it all the time. But if I have to generate that buzz on the East Coast first and then “home” finally gets it, then that’s what I’ll do LM: Can you give some insight on how an independent gospel artist can get airplay or notoriety outside of the United States? Marjane`: First and foremost you have to stay connected to God and let him lead you in all that you do. Most of my fanbase came from MySpace and a lot of people have moved on to Facebook but you have to remember where you started and where your first fanbase came from. Most of the people that I’ve met that are in London and South Africa and all these other places, met me through MySpace which was a great tool for me because Internet if worldwide. If you go ahead and market yourself the way you need to on the

www.airplay360.com

Internet, people will find you. As for marketing, I am an independent artist and me and my husband, Clint Johnson, work as a team. I was blessed to marry somebody who does graphic design and he keeps (my image) out there in the people’s sight so they don’t forget. LM: So, how do you plan to stay grounded as you gain more exposure? Marjane`: My prayer has always been: “Lord I don’t care where you take me in this dream, I do not want to be untouchable.” I have to remember that the fans and my supporters and my family are the people that stood behind me in the vision that God has shown me and I can’t forget that. LM: How diverse is the terrestrial radio support you’ve received? Marjane`: Well I know on the East Coast they are more gospel contemporary and there are some urban channels. Like in London an R&B station added my song and that’s one of the stations that I’ve been Top 100 on. In face, we just got rotation on Rejoice Musical Soul Food and that’s huge. So, whichever doors God wants to open, I’m hoping they get opened and we continue moving forward in ministry. Marjane` was a finalist on Black Entertainment Television’s Sunday Best season 2007 and won the 2010 Ensound Award for Best Gospel Female Artist. Although bookings are critical, you have to make sure that you are being effective and evolving so that you grow to diverse markets. Place your new photos on your YouTube channel; however, make sure you’re utilizing having this channel in every way. Tell more about yourself, what you've learned and what the audience can expect based on footage of other events you have already done. Inform the audience of any volunteer work or hobbies you have. Ask for feedback. This will initiate direct interaction and create a database for fine tuning what you do. Every company surveys the market. You do the same. Promote your twitter and facebook pages. Use a range of photos so that everything is not the same this way it presents a fresher feel and look overall. Make sure you attend tech events. Stepping outside of the box often means with your mind and feet. Walk in new directions being open yet, have a plan in mind. Be compassionate. If you have sincere care and compassion for others then, it will translate in your music ministry—your heart ministry. Be educated about the industry. Knowing what is necessary for the industry when you enter this professional level of music is so important but I also know that ministry and industry have their proper place. Although social networking and all the elements I have mentioned are important, ministry is the only one that touches and heals hearts. Never trade in your heart. Industry won't keep it beating.
