PUBLISHER’S NOTE
Motivate Yourself! f you learn to motivate yourself, your life will never be the same. I’ve often observed that many of us can be so hyped and inspired during Sunday morning service but by Monday, if not sooner, the praise on our lips has turned to silence and doubt. We go to church every Sunday seemingly to get motivated but how do we stay that way? I speak from experience when I tell you that you can listen to everybody’s success video and read every minister’s faith book but until you retain what you have heard and learn to speak it out of your mouth AFTER Sunday service and DURING the week, we you will lose motivation every time. Be laser-focused on your goal. Say it out loud. Write it down. Put it on our refrigerator, bathroom vanity, in our car, on our office desk and anywhere else you frequent. Motivate yourself by letting your aspirations be a constant reminder of what you still must accomplish. When there’s no one else around or available, you must find the strength within to motivate yourself.

LEGAL Brief How to Protect Your Child in the Music Industry BY ANGELA D GREEN, ESQ.
n the music business there is a lot of emphasis placed on youthfulness. The younger you are when you start, the better. You will find this thinking in the entertainment business in general. However, there are a lot of issues that need to be considered before you place your child in the business. Especially if you plan for them to do more than just make music. No one under the age of 18 may legally enter into a contract. Therefore, you will find an entertainment company will require a “Parental Consent and Guarantee” agreement to be signed by the parents. The laws in most states allow a child to terminate a contract for specific performance early without liability. This agreement makes the parent liable to the company. The child labor laws in California are very extensive when it comes to the entertainment business. One such law states that if a contract with a minor is approved by the court, then it cannot be terminated early by the child. Another law states that 15% of a child’s earnings must be placed in a Coogan Account, not to be touched, until they turn 18 years old. No matter where the
child lives in the United States, if you plan for your child to work in Hollywood, the California child labor laws will apply. As a parent, you need to become familiar with California's laws as well as the music business in general. You do not want to enter into an agreement and then realize because of the mandatory 15% for the child, and all the other fees and percentages going out the door, that you and your child end up with very little during the time they are working the most in the industry. There is a non-profit child advocacy group called A Minor Consideration, Inc., founded by Paul Petersen who was a child star in Hollywood that educates and advise parents about the entertainment business for free. To learn more about A Minor Consideration, Inc. go to www.minorcon.org. ulti-award winning gospel artist Kierra Sheard recently chatted with Airplay 360 publisher Ace Alexander about “The Sheard’s” her family’s new reality show on BET and how she’s coping with exposing family and personal life, and business issues on TV. In addition to Kierra, her producer brother J. Drew Sheard and parents, Grammy winner Karen Clark Sheard and Church of God in Christ Bishop J. Drew Sheard are on the show. ACE: Let me say first of all congratulations to you and your family’s docu-series. Props out to you guys for that. KIERRA: Thank you so much. It’s really exciting. It’s an opportunity to be able to minister in a different way and on a different platform and I don’t take it lightly.
us have the ability to live that thing without the help of God but I really take my hat off to you for the honesty and the sincerity you demonstrate to live that kind of life. KIERRA: Thank you so much. And like you said, it’s not easy. My father teaches us sanctification is a process and I’m just thankful. It’s fun but I have to say it saves you. If it wasn’t for the relationship with Christ and me always asking God to create in my a clean heart and renew in my a right spirit, I’d be jacked up. You never know. I might be on somebody’s news.
ACE: Now I don’t know if you know this but according to Nielsen, during it’s April 7 premiere on BET “The Sheard’s”, your show, brought in more than 1.2 million viewers. Did you know that? KIERRA: Yes, I did. I was in tears when I found that out. God is amazing. I never would have even thought such a thing. I’m still in awe of that. ACE: Now the thing is that made it the top ranked Sunday cable reality series telecast in its 10pm time slot so far this year with Adults 18+, also Top 3 Sunday cable reality series debut for 2013 among total viewers. So you guys are putting it down. God is really showing you some favor and I’m really just proud of you. KIERRA: Thank you so much. That means so much to me. I ask that you all keep us in your prayers. We want to make sure we’re bringing glory to God and his kingdom and no shame to him. It’s so much fun to be able to even inspire young men and young women to know that you can be a Christ believer, you can be a Christian and be bold about Him and not have to compromise what society is forcing in our faces. So it’s a blessing. I mean I’m still in awe. And I’m like, “What? We have a show on TV? I can’t believe it.” So thank you so much. ACE: Oh you’re more than welcome. You know I feel like I’ve watched you grow into this amazing young woman and what I really respect about you Kierra, most of all, is your honesty and sincerity to live a God life. I didn’t say ability because none of

ACE: And you know you wouldn’t be jacked up by yourself. You’d have a lot of company because none of us can maintain this thing on our own. There’s no question about that. Do you see the show, this platform, as an opportunity to share your faith and your music with the world or are you thinking even more so on how you may be viewed? KIERRA: You know I’m going to be honest, in the beginning I was definitely worried about what people would think. I was very nervous about it. I said, “Lord, if this is a door from you, give me a peace about it. Let me just be at peace with Continued KIERRA Page 12 AIRPLAY 360

KIERRA Continued From Page 11 walking in this door.” I also prayed in the beginning of the project that, “If it’s not your will, then you shut the door. Close it. Don’t even let me walk into it.” Having said that, I’ve got a peace about it and now I’m sure a lot of people have a lot of negative things to say. But I’ve been seeing more positive that is outweighing the negative. So that’s a good sign to me. But I take it and I use this platform as a chance to minister to people and to be transparent and let people into our lives so that they’ll see that we’re not just being hearers of the Word but doers of the Word. And I think that God is not going to look at how many audiences you sing to and cry in front of and say, “I love Jesus.” But I think our lives should say something. I know and I believe that worship is a lifestyle more than it’s a song. So I’m hoping that people will see the Christ in us and I hope that it’s winning souls as well as strengthening families and leaders in the church to

not give up and to keep going and to keep God first and to hang in there and let the joy of the Lord be their strength. So that’s how I look at this platform. I think that a lot of young women and young men, they’ve been inspired. I just count it a blessing and I’m totally humbled. It’s ministry for me and I do want to expand my brand as well as promote Jesus. Kierra is working on new music that will be released at the end of “The Sheards” season on BET with a video following. “The Sheards” airs Sundays at 8 p.m. Eastern, 7 p.m. Central on BET. YOUR Image Why It’s Necessary to
Delegate
BY ADRIAN ANDERSON
o often when we are building our vision, we see it and walk forward everyday making it happen one action at a time. That works for a season and then the day comes when you have to decide how to get more done without continuing to wear yourself out due to executing each action over and over again. Being worn out is often foolishly celebrated. It's a reminder that you are only human and that is why alliances are needed. Yes, you have to work in an spirit of community. This is valuable. That is known especially these days; however, what tends to happen is each person’s agenda is a priority so much of the time that one is trying to get more for theirs than they are giving for someone else. Your company or project should be your priority, but when you choose to combine efforts for an aspect of both parties’ business goals, you have to have the shared goal that both will be better at the end than the beginning. Relax and allow your best effort to come forth. All you have to do is review the results at the end and decide from there. This is why delegation is your friend and isolation is your foe. You don't have to combine 100 percent; you only combine in the respective areas you both need help with. Delegate some aspects of your company's operations to others which will actually empower them. Allow others to use their gifts and shine! You will realize that they had ideas that they never brought to the table because you did not come across as interested or perhaps you

have shown that you are the type of person ADRIAN ANDERSON who takes credit for ideas that are not yours. Even though you may get brought to the table because you did not come across as interested or perhaps you have shown that you are the type of person who takes credit for ideas that are not yours. Although you may get away with it for a while, you are ultimately digging a very big hole that you will fall into because it all comes full circle. Crashing a year or two later is no less a crash, so always have a great launch and landing in mind. When you strategically delegate, causing others to grow, you will actually be able to go to bed at a decent hour. There is a sense of peace and relief when you know when you go to sleep your business does not sleep. Delegate and gain a new respect for your employees, co-workers and peers. You are only human and like Barbara Streisand sings, "People who need people are the luckiest people in the world." Now look at your vision, then look all around you and see who you can delegate key aspects to. Yes, they will report to you periodically. But now you can breathe and get ready for new results.

VOCAL Health What Is Your VOCAL IDENTITY? BY DILEESA HUNTER
One of my students just recently attended a video release party for an artist. The artist performed an acoustic set of four songs and showed two music videos. As my student listened to the artist, she realized that the artist’s live performance sounded completely different from the sound in the video. So, I wanted to point out that who you are vocally is important! When people hear your voice, no matter what the song is, they should know that it’s you! I bet all of you can hear your favorite artists’ voice and instantly tell that it’s him, her, or them! It should be the same for you. If you have an awesome vibrato that’s like no other, keep it! Use it, and be super proud of it! Own it because it’s yours. No one can do it like you, so why not! Maybe you can hold out notes for minutes— hold them. Not too many people can do that. You’ll stand out for sure! Outside of technique, you may have a tone color that hasn’t been heard before. Well, you have it for a reason. Don’t take it for grante. Embrace it!

Growing & Empowering Future Leaders to SUCCESS BY DR. AMICITIA MALOON-GIBSON ere is an empowerment moment for you that will be a stepping stone to your success as you start your journey and follow your passion in any career field. Many of you are already creative and have found your passion, especially those in the creative arts of musicality. As a product of the Baby Boomer generation, here are some tidbits I can share with you on your journey to success that will save you thousands of dollars and time in going down the wrong path. Answer these questions. First: Are you an individual seeking job satisfaction? Second: What is the greatest obstacle that is paralyzing you from reaching your goal? If you are an employee, you should have a back-up plan. Third: Do you have an option or back-up plan if you are released from your current position today? Like Nike says, “Just Do it!” Why? Well, employers are doing more with less and not really looking at succession planning, meaning that today you are the best thing that ever happened to them yesterday. Employers are seeking to retain the best of the best and that may not be you, although you have greatness in you. Putting it nicely, there is a projected shortage of highly skilled employees and employers, like the Baby Boomer generation, recognize this skillsets-GAP-lack. Highly skilled and experienced Boomers are being offered retention bonus and other benefits to stay in the workforce as late as 75 years of age. Boomers are being offered work-at-home options, flexwork schedules, promotions and health packages never offered in previous generations. Why? Boomers have coined the work ethics that no other generation has exemplified. Even living longer, boomers have skillsets that are unique and valuable, so they can retire early, start a second career or become an entrepreneur. Here are the surveyed statistical data that should stimulate and give you a wakeup call or aha moment.
www.airplay360.com
Some survey show that 76 percent of Baby Boomers intend to keep working and earning in retirement, although many say they will "retire" from their current job at 64 and then jump into an entirely new job or career. According to Silvernail Consultants, by the year 2030, 57.8 million baby boomers will still be alive with 54.9 percent being female. For more statistics visit census.gov/ipc/www/usinterimproj/ and refer to the link genpolicy.com/2006_journal/index_articles.html. Explore the following site that will help calculate your estimated SSI payments: ssa.gov/OACT/quickcalc/index.html. However, Social Security benefits may not be available to your generation. Again I ask you, “What are your options and back-up plans if you are released from your current position today?” As a twice retired senior executive, I can tell you from experience that thousands have benefited from baby boomers like me. At MGAA Professional Development Institute, our mission is “growing and empowering future leaders now” the next generation—you. We want you to be the best of the best. We want your team, church, choir and organization to stand out as 21st Century great leaders and we have the experience, tools and skillset to get you there. You benefit from our mistakes and stepping stones that took us to the top! Lack of mentorship, coaching and leadership results in performance that is marginal and poor.
