MFA THESIS
When I was a child, my home is nearby to a clear river, but after years the river was polluted and full of plastic waste. Everywhere I go, I saw plastic waste, from rivers to beaches, from one country to another. For me, as a graphic designer has the responsibility to make our design environmentally-friendly as much as possible. The power of design can change the way people think and live, and it can also make our environment better.

point where they create problems for wildlife and their habitats as well as for human populations. Plastic pollution occurs in many forms, but not limited to littering, marine debris, plastic particle, water pollution, plastic netting and Friendly Floaters. Plastic pollution can adversely s i tu ati o n
affect lands and oceans. In 1907, the invention of Bakelite brought about a revolution in materials by introducing truly synthetic plastic resins into world commerce. By the end of the 20th century, however, plastics were found to be persistent polluters of many environmental niches, from Mount Everest to the bottom of the sea. Whether being mistaken for food by animals, flooding low-lying areas by clogging drainage systems, or simply causing significant aesthetic blight, plastics have attracted increasing attention as a large-scale pollutant in today’s world.

We have produced more plastic in the last ten years than we did in the whole of the last century and this plastic production is having a huge impact. It is using vast amounts of precious oil reserves; approximately 8% that equates to the amount used by the whole of Africa. Half of the plastics thrown away are used just once; the problem is that there is no “away”. The impact on wildlife, the environment and the potential harm to human health are only now becoming clear. The fact is that we have to do

PLASTIC DEBRIS END UP IN THE WORLD’S OCEANS EVERY YEAR:
WILDLIFE DIE EACH YEAR BECAUSE OF PLASTIC:
Since the ocean is downstream from nearly every terrestrial location, it is the receiving body for much of the plastic waste generated on land. It has been estimated that 6.4 million tons of debris end up in the world’s oceans every year and that some 60 to 80 percent of that debris, or 3.8 to 5 million tons, is improperly discarded plastic litter. Plastic constitutes approximately 90% of all trash floating on the ocean’s surface, with 46,000 pieces of plastic per square mile. Both animals and human are suffering from plastic

pollution. In the ocean, plastic pollution can kill marine mammals directly through entanglement in objects such as fishing gear, but it can also kill through ingestion, by being mistaken for food. Plastic pollution has the potential to poison animals, which can then adversely affect human food supplies. Some of the chemicals used in plastic production have the potential to be absorbed by human beings through skin absorption and can cause dermatitis.

Three plastics have shown how to leach toxic chemicals when heated, worn or put under pressure: polycarbonate, which leaches bisphenol A; polystyrene, which leaches styrene; and PVC, or polyvinyl chloride, which break down into vinyl chloride and sometimes contains phthalates that can leach.

VINYL CHLORIDE is formed in the manufacture of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) or #3 plastic. It was one of the first chemicals designated as a known human carcinogen by the National Toxicology Program (NTP) and the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC). It has also been linked to increased mortality from breast cancer among workers involved in its manufacture.

SURVEY
This survey was conducted both online and on the street of San Francisco in February 2014. Main audiences of this survey are in age group 18-30, who live in San Francisco. About 50 surveys were filled by mostly students and young professionals. All of my audiences think plastic pollution can affect them. However, 73% of them have bought plastic bottled water recently, and 32% are not recycling plastic bottles; 50% of them don’t have the habit of using portable stuff. People in the age group 18-30 are mostly receiving information from the website and social network, but most of them didn’t follow any environmental organization or website. People are not receiving environmental information regularly.
The reason could be: 1. People don’t care about their environment; 2. Environmental organization or website are not engaging; 3. People are only getting environmental information from other methods(for example

Bring Back provides both products and services to restaurants and consumers. To attract restaurants

to join the system, it provides an online platform to promote member restaurants. To invite and facilitate users to reduce single-use plastics, Bring Back builds a credit system on the website and application. Users can collect credits when recycling the container, and use credits to get restaurants’ coupons.
