India and Uganda Revisited Phoenix Cinema Saturday 20th June 2015
In Leicester we are very familiar with the significance of the persecution, expulsion and relocation of the Asian community from Uganda to Leicester in 1972 under the regime of President Idi Amin. In 2015, both India and Uganda are equal - equal in their persecution of their LGBT communities. India and Uganda Reconsidered is a challenging element of our film programme presenting 3 films which highlight the complexities of tradition, gender and sexuality. A panel discussion considering the issues raised with Transindia director Meera Darji, author of ‘Illicit Worlds of Indian Dance’ Anna Morcom and a LGBT Ugandan refugee Paschal.
THE FILMS Transindia (18) (Dir. Meera Darji, 2015), 30mins, 2pm Once an accepted contingent of traditional Indian society, the transgender community (Hijras) are pushed to the edge. This moving documentary explores being blessed and cursed through observation, interviews and personal archives.

Skin: Surface Tension Curve
Surface Tension follows on from earlier work (titled “Field Notes”) by considering Alan Turing’s Reaction diffusion theory to focus on marking skin. This new work considers the relationship between adorned skin and gaze of the viewer. When skin becomes a canvas for a motif, the gaze of the viewer changes and the skin takes on new meaning. The adornment becomes meta-skin, imbued with unworldly power and presence.

Dr Jen Dickinson
India’s Rising Power in Africa Curve Seminar Room
Saturday 27th June, 1.30-2.30pm Lecturer in Human Geography at the University of Leicester, Dickinson’s research explores the changing nature of India’s political and economic relationship with the African continent, from the 1800s through to the present day. As India is growing as a world power, this poses important questions over its influence in development aid, civil society and security. At the same time, contemporary relations are built on past collaborations, with consequences for historical Indian diasporic communities.
Saturday 27th June, 4.30-6pm Vimal Patel, PhD student and lecturer in history at De Montfort University invites you to a student led debate on India’s recently elected prime minister Narendra Modi. Does the success and popularity of Gujarat’s erstwhile chief minister reflect the bullish optimism of the Indian economy? Or could it be argued that Modi represents a social project of ‘Hinduisation’ at the expense of India’s diverse and liberal culture? Join us for what will be a lively debate about contemporary India, its politics and the man of the moment, prime minister Narendra Modi.

to inspire, educate and challenge people through creativity Conceived in response to Sir Ken Robinson’s “How Schools Kill Creativity”, Inspirate agrees that creative learning is increasingly being challenged in school curricula and consequently devalued in everyday lives. We want to explore how to bring learning experiences into peoples’ lives in a spectrum of engaging ways. In 2014 Inspirate began its partnership with local school engagement giving school children the opportunity to experience the Cultural Quarter at Phoenix Cinema. This year, with the support of University of Leicester, we are pleased to be growing our engagement with schools. These opportunities are available to schools and colleges only. • Cricket Day with LCCC and University of Leicester at Grace Road • Dance Workshops with Nupur Arts • Puppetry Workshops with Effigy Theatre Company • Film Education at Phoenix Cinema • Dance residency with Sonia Sabri at Studio 79 • Tamasha Theatre Writing Workshops • Dance and Language Workshops at Univeristy of Leicester If your organisation would like to work with Inspirate please contact us at info@inspirate.org

We found Richard III What Could Our research changes the world. At Leicester you could be taught by the people that found Richard III.
www.le.ac.uk
We think a university should be about empowering people to explore what they don’t know through passionate, dedicated teaching and innovative, world-changing research. By embracing the fact that we’re all coming at it from a slightly different place, and that every journey is personal, we’ve managed to achieve some remarkable results in our time. We believe that the best universities are not just the privilege of elites. We’re proof that you can stand alongside the best and open up the competition for everyone. We are the only university to win seven consecutive Times Higher Awards. The Times Higher Education applauded our very different approach, describing us as “elite without being elitist”. We’re the only top twenty university to consistently meet Government benchmarks for the recruitment of students from state education and socio-economic disadvantage. Our ground-breaking researchers unearthed the remains of Richard III, invented DNA finger printing and scanned the surface of Mars. We’re also an integral part of the local community. We contribute £729 million to the national economy with much of that impact being felt here in Leicester. We work closely with local partners such as schools and charities to ensure that all residents have the opportunity to feel
benefits of our facilities and activities. We also support the efforts of our many staff and students who volunteer locally. There is more to student life than obtaining your degree and that is where Leicester Students’ Union comes in. The Students’ Union supports students and ensures students make the most out of their University experience. They support over 200 societies to run events and help students to make friends along the way. The societies aim to get local businesses involved by running events like Farmers Markets, sourcing local produce, to ensuring they support local volunteering projects. It’s our commitment to the city of Leicester as well as our passion for discovery and diversity that makes us proud to support An Indian Summer. This festival helps residents discover more about India while also celebrating the diversity of our vibrant city.

E L I M AR E
The Square Mile programme is dedicated to providing public good beyond the campus boundaries at De Montfort University (DMU). To achieve this commitment, Square Mile connects the university to the wider community by offering a range of innovative projects that draw upon academic expertise to work with the community to improve health, education and job prospects across Leicester. Square Mile also strives to enhance experience and employability for students throughout their time at DMU by providing unique opportunities. To combine all aspects of the Square Mile programme and accomplish a positive change for the public good, the award-winning programme collaborated with #DMUglobal to create the Indian washroom project. #DMUglobal is a novel international programme for De Montfort University students to gain global experience and develop cultural prospects. Millions of school children in Indore, particularly girls, drop out of education by the age of 14 due to a lack of washroom facilities. The Indian washroom project provided a remarkable opportunity for DMU students to travel to Indore, and support a community by building washrooms for the schools to make a positive impact on the children’s education and school life. The project met and surpassed the initial expectations set out by Square Mile and #DMUglobal, so many more trips are being planned for the future. Each washroom costs £2000, so if you would like to dontate toward this life-changing project, please contact us to find out how you can help.
