INTRODUCTION Inspirate is proud to present one of the biggest celebrations of South Asian culture in the UK!

Marking 70 years of independence for Pakistan and India - a momentous year to reflect on our recent history and look forward towards a shared future.

An Indian Summer was born to bring cultures together and showcase an eclectic mix of art with a little something for everyone. Our three month programme of live shows, films, workshops, exhibitions and talks will inspire, challenge and bring the colour of South Asia to the heart of Leicester!

Partition was monumental; the largest mass migration of people ever, the figures, the facts, the statistics are horrific and unbelievably complex. Nadim Chaudry’s installation is born out of a need to acknowledge this and also to pay homage to the quagmire of this ungodly event. Partition for Nadim is about belonging, it is about the search for a homeland, it is about Zameen.

A groundbreaking web series exploring the four centuries of Britain and India’s remarkable relationship - from the first voyage of the East India Company to modern society. Britain and India where in very different places 400 years ago and the interactions between both countries have come to shape our world in more ways than one would expect. In October 1875, the Prince of Wales set off on a four-month tour of the Indian Subcontinent, visiting over 21 localities, which today encompass India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan and Nepal. Splendours of the Subcontinent: A Prince’s Tour of India tells the story of this grand tour through some of the finest Indian treasures from the Royal Collection that were presented to the Prince during his visit.

Curatorial double act, The White Pube host a screening of their sensational Zayn Malik Zindabad! A brief glimpse into an art world that is not defined by the “white-iarchy” and artists of South Asian descent can let their talent breathe.

Night of Festivals returns to the city of Leicester to mark the 70th Anniversary of Indian and Pakistan Independence and celebrate the vibrant cultures of South Asia! The spirit of South Asia is coming to Leicester from 14th – 19th August through a series of free events taking place in the streets and venues across the city centre.

Following on from the incredible success of Leicester’s inaugural Bring The Paint festival, An Indian Summer has commissioned nationally acclaimed artist, Mono to produce Belgrave Road’s first ever street art mural!

In the ‘Badlands’ of Uttar Pradesh, where violence against women can be traced back to Indian mythology, one woman has raised an army to say “no more”. She is Sampat Pal, the formidable and fearless leader of the Gulabi Gang, a movement of over 400,000 women fighting for their rights in a uniform of blazing pink saris. Metro-Boulot-Dodo and Nupur Arts perform a contemporary rendition of the ancient Ramayana; experience a breath-taking outdoor theatre performance with enchanting storytelling, choreographed movement and immersive animation.
