First thing that comes into your mind about Hippie is what? -It must be flowers, garlands, floral costumes, long flowy hair or rock music etc.? Yes, their lifestyle is usually associated with rock music, hallucinogenic drugs, and long flowy hair and clothing.

A 1967 VW Kombi bus was decorated, hand painted by the hippie people. Travel, domestic and international was a prominent feature of hippie culture. School buses and VW buses were iconic because friends in groups could travel in cheap. A peace symbol was replaced by the Volkswagen logo everywhere on the body of the bus. -Economical -Environment Friendly -A new way to meet people Once when came to India, the hippies visited the beaches of Goa, crossed the border of Nepal (Kathmandu)

Counter Culture- Best described for

the Hippies. It is used to describe people whose values, morals, attitude, lifestyle differs from the mainstream of the society. They were strongly against violence and believed in peace and harmony. The hippies connected themselves with music of that time. Woodstock festival was an important concert in the hippie culture Particularly in the Vietnam War, the hippies believed that the government was the root of this, due to which many officials and authorities felt threatened by the presence of hippie. To heighten their experiences spiritually and physically, many hippies used hallucinogenic drugs, like LSD. They listened to rock music and encouraged artistic expression in all different mediums.

WHEREThe hippie movement originated in the United States and was seen throughout the country, later spreading through the parts of the world. The main epicenter was New York City which was home to the largest hippie community ever existed. WHENThe hippie movement became famous in the 1960s. Ended in the late 70s, specially after the generation started growing older. However the spirit of hippie culture has highly influenced the world and the society today because of the new ideas it brought to the world.


1960s-2015 Fashion Style

Garments that existed in hippie fashion are mostly short, floral, skimmed for the structure of the body. This unit also covers Granny dresses that is still accepted. Tie&Dye and floral are most of the pattern that is seen evidently in this current fashion trend. Op art also is one of the common way of developing the structure of details in a dress.

Stripes are commonly seen in dresses but when it comes to hippie people it becomes more lively and gorgeous. Paisley, the pattern seen in most of the floral dresses. Since hippies rejected the modern American mainstream, ethnic clothes were popular. Both men and women wore common headbands, floppy hats, flowing scarves and beads with blue jeans all over it. “Flower-Power” is the best term for the hippies to describe their movement. It was not uncommon for hippies at anti-war demonstrations to give flowers to the armybattle and the soldiers. Though the hippies grew older, and styles changed people continued to feel nostalgic about hippie style and culture.

The s and s did saw the occasional revivals of hippie fashion and music, but not the hippie values anymore. By the end of

1970s, the Yuppies had arrived; youngsters who were more inter-

ested to make their career as the priority and changing society’s belief.

Movies of certain production houses, were definitely inspired by this look. As a result, Hare Rama Hare Krishna in India was released where the actress Zeenat Aman potrayed a character of a hippie woman who was completely addicted to drugs and had been given perfect costumes for a hippie. After the release, theme-parties were introduced were Hippie was one the most common theme. Accessories from the 1960s hippie fashion are always used by famous music artists those who are aware on how cool it is to wear accessories that are simple but fascinating to eyes. Lakme Fashion Week’15 witnessed the return of the duo Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla on the runway and made their debut with the modern twist to the retro hippie couture collection

called “Jawani Jaaneman” inspired by the same movie Hare Rama Hare Krishna.
