A Phoenix Rises Rebirth of DC’s National Theatre by Kathleen McDonough Legend has it that the mythical bird, Phoenix, never dies, although it must periodically undergo a period of renewal in order to be born anew. Out of its own ashes a new phoenix will always arise, young and strong, flying far ahead, continually scanning the landscape for that which is worthy. So it is with DC’s National Theatre, where today a new history is springing out of the old for this legendary theatrical venue. 20

DC METRO October – November, 2014

N

ot every visitor to Washington DC realizes that in addition to being the country’s political capital this city is also a vibrant cultural capital, with a theater heritage almost as old as the nation itself: the architectural designs presented to President George Washington in 1791 for the new capital city not only included plans for a “congressional house” and “presidential palace”, but also the prominent placement of “playhouses” along its grand avenues. Now, nearly 180 years after its own founding in December 1835— and in almost continuous operation ever since—National Theatre is still located at its original site just three blocks from the White House and continues to serve as the “presidents’ playhouse”, having entertained nearly every Chief Executive since Andrew Jackson. Over the decades, National Theatre has earned a unique place in both the historical and theatrical records, having played host to a multitude of memorable theater evenings, including, on April 14, 1865, attendance by 12-yeary old Tad Lincoln at a performance of Aladdin and the Wonderful Lamp where he learned of his father’s tragic assassination at the hands of failed actor John Wilkes Booth just blocks away at Ford’s Theatre. But thankfully the National’s overall history is far more cheerful, as it’s been a witness and contributor to some of the American musical theater’s watershed moments, having hosted the pre-Broadway premieres of three acclaimed classics: Show Boat, Hello, Dolly! and West Side Story. Along with these and many other memorable productions, some of the great names of stage and screen have graced National Theatre’s stage, including Will Rogers, Rex Harrison, Helen Hayes, Audrey Hepburn, Katherine Hepburn, James Earl Jones, Eartha Kitt, Sir Ian McKellen, Rita Moreno, Sir Laurence Olivier, Debbie Reynolds, Chita Rivera, George C. Scott and Robert Redford. Although in recent years National Theatre may have been under-utilized, its 2012 reorganization under the new direction of Jam Theatricals (a large Broadway presenting/producing company partnering with SMG to form the National Theatre Group) is proving that this theater is once again ready to fly toward a bigger and brighter future and reestablish itself as a formidable presence in the DC theater scene for event musicals and other popular stage offerings. In 2013, the National took a giant step toward revitalization by undergoing its first refurbishment

in more than 30 years while also playing host to the world premiere and pre-Broadway engagement of If/Then (starring Idina Menzel in a show which continues to flourish on Broadway) along with acclaimed revivals of The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess and West Side Story. The National’s new team, expertly guided by Jam Theatricals President Steve Traxler, is fully committed to the theater’s rejuvenation, and as Mr. Traxler recently commented, “Our goal at National Theatre is to reestablish the prominence of this great Broadway touring house that’s been both rich in its historical presence within our nation’s capital as well as significant as a footprint in the world of theater for many decades. Looking back on our first season (2013-2014), we were able to present the world premiere of If/Then and the highly prestigious – and only area appearances – of the Tony® Awardwinning revivals of Porgy and Bess and West Side Story, as well as crowd pleasers Mamma Mia, Stomp and Blue Man Group.” Regarding the new 20142015 season, Mr. Traxler further explained, “With our current season at the National, we’ve once again opened on a very exciting note, with the official launch of the 30-plus city, North American tour of the world-wide smash hit, Dirty Dancing – The Classic Story On Stage. And most gratifyingly, DC audiences are excited about our upcoming holiday offering of Donny and Marie: Christmas at the National and, direct from Broadway, Pippin, the winner of the 2013 Tony® Award for Best Musical Revival, as evidenced by ticket sales for both that far exceed expectations. Of course, we’re pleased to also present perennial audience favorites Chicago The Musical and Dame Edna’s Glorious Goodbye – The Farewell Tour. And we’re deeply honored that Disney has chosen National Theatre as the venue for its smash musical hit, Newsies.” But that’s not all that’s in store this season at a newly reinvigorated National Theatre–there’s even more coming that will excite, delight and entertain audiences, as it’s just been announced that Broadway/Hollywood icon and British Dame, Angela Landbury, will be coming to the National in March to reprise her Tony® Award-winning role of Madame Arcati in Noel Coward’s Blithe Spirit, part of a highly anticipated, strictly limited, four-city tour.

welcome acting legend Dame Angela as she follows up her recent triumphant appearances on both Broadway and London stages in one of the theater’s genuinely great comic roles in this enduring comedy classic. It’s theatrical coups like these–and there will be many more to come–that we hope will continue to define and distinguish a reenergized National Theatre as a major force in DC’s dynamic theater landscape.”

Celebrating its 65th season, Arena Stage is Washington’s flagship theater company as well as the largest in the country committed to the production, presentation, development and study of American Theater. Its 2014-15 season will honor that history and revel in creating new and inspiring work. The season includes five world premieres; big names like August Wilson and Christopher Durang; wonderful artists and exciting directors making their Arena debuts; visits with Sherlock Holmes and Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia; plus two musicals to make your holiday season sparkle. Highlights include “The Shoplifters”, the gold-standard musical, “Fiddler On The Roof”, Ken Ludwig’s “BASKERVILLE- a Sherlock Holmes Mystery” and the world-premiere political drama, “The Originalist”.

The centerpiece of the worldrenowned Folger Shakespeare Library research center, the intimate Elizabethan Theatre – designed to evoke a 16th-century English playhouse – is the setting for the Folger Theatre’s outstanding productions. And as the Folger continues to honor the great bard’s 450th anniversary year, a spectacular season is on hand, beginning with the September residency of London’s Shakespeare’s Globe performing “King Lear”. And just in time for election season, Folger brings Shakespeare’s classic political thriller, “Julius Caesar” to the stage in October and a new adaptation of Friedrich Schiller’s play, “Mary Stuart” which pits queen (Elizabeth I) against queen (Mary Queen of Scots). The season concludes with Tom Stoppard’s Tony Award® winning existentialist comedy “Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead”.

A National Historic Site, Ford’s Theatre is the infamous location of President Abraham Lincoln’s assassination by actor John Wilkes Booth in 1865. Today, Ford’s is a working theater that celebrates the legacy of the 16th President and explores the American experience through theater and education, particularly through the creation of the Lincoln Legacy Project, a multiyear effort dedicated to exploring issues of social justice and the ideals of equality for which Abraham Lincoln stood. The 2014-2015 season will include mainstage productions of “Driving Miss Daisy”, the return of one of DC’s favorite actors, Edward Gero, as Scrooge in “A Christmas Carol”, the world premiere of “The Widow Lincoln” and an epic, concert-style musical, “Freedom’s Song: Abraham Lincoln and the Civil War”, inspired by the words of Lincoln and those who lived through the Civil War.

From Sondheim’s “Sunday in The Park With George” to Sheryl Crow

and Barry Levinson’s adaption of the 1982 film “Diner” to Kander and Ebb’s “Cabaret”, this important anniversary season will be chock full of everything — reimagined classics, world premieres, musicals and challenging new plays. Other highlights include the musical version of “Elmer Gantry”, “Sex with Strangers”, the world premiers “Kid Victory” and “Soon” and an original 25th anniversary tribute event, “Simply Sondheim”.

Studio Theatre’s 2014-2015 Season features a ten-play lineup that includes the first world premiere in a decade, its first commissioned work in its Lab, and a late-night musical that will be staged cabaret-style: “Belleville”, “Bad Jews”, “Choir Boy”, “Laugh”, “Jumpers for Goalposts”, “The Wolfe Twins”, “Murder Ballad”, “Terminus”, “Mary-Kate Olsen in Love” and “Silence! The Musical”.

Synetic Theater 1800 South Bell Street, Arlington, VA 22202 www.synetictheater.org; www. facebook.com/SyneticTheater; twitter.com/synetictheater This innovative and highly imaginative theater company specializes in a uniquely physical style that fuses dynamic art forms John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts

such as text, drama, movement, dance, acrobatics and music to tell classical stories in a new and unique way. Since the debut in 2002 of its enchanting “wordless” productions, Synetic has quickly established itself among the Washington area’s most acclaimed stages with its dazzling and innovative physical theater offerings. Twelve years later, Synetic is once again engaging audiences with a new season of compelling works that are simultaneously avant-garde and accessible. The four-production lineup at Synetic will feature, as always, reinterpretations of classic plays and books: HG Wells’ haunting novel “The Island of Dr. Moreau” as well as “Beauty and the Beast”; an eleventh wordless presentation of Shakespeare: “Much Ado About Nothing”; and closing the season with a novel entry: founder Paata Tsikurishvili and wife Irina star in the off-Broadway comedy, “Hunting Cockroaches”. Needless to say, Synetic’s inventiveness and unforgettable visuals will elevate the season to new level of excellence.

Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company 641 D Street NW, Washington, DC 20004 www.woollymammoth.net; www. facebook.com/woollymammothtc; twitter.com/woollymammothtc Now in its 35th season, Woolly Mammoth has been pushing the limits of classical theater with skilled actors, new playwrights and “PayWhat-You-Can” nights, bringing DC audiences exhilarating new plays and boundary breaking works. In its new season, the apocryphal quip by Marie Antoinette—“Let them eat cake!”— sparks a deliciously decadent season, but also one in which leaders are skewered and the widening divide between the haves and the have-nots examined. The cast of characters include queens and presidents, boomers and hustlers, the living and the living dead, and all explore societies and individuals under attack from outside and inside forces, breaking down, breaking out, and groping toward new solutions. Certain to be one of its most diverse, adventurous and provocative to date, the season includes “Marie Antoinette”, “Famous Puppet Death Scenes”, “Cherokee”, “Lights Rise on Grace” and “Zombie: The American”.

Exploring outside of Washington

W

ashington, D.C. ranks as one of the best day tripping starting points in the country. In addition to being a city packed with its own collection of places to explore, Washington neighbors states with an unbelievable number of parks, historic homes, waterfalls, monuments, farms, beaches, lakes, archaeological excavations, mountains, Civil War battlefields, campgrounds, trails, horse stables, wineries, museums and even an amusement park or two. Along the way there are also world-class inns, restaurants and performance venues as well as plenty of lesser known but equally as appealing greasy spoons, farm stands, coffeehouses, regional theaters and artisan cooperatives The diversity of the sites within driving distance from the city means most everyone can find something that will make them happy. Whether you prefer urban streets, cobblestone sidewalks, sandy beaches, dirt roads or historic pathways, the region surrounding the nation’s capital holds many destinations where you’ll want to leave your footprints over and over again.

Whether you are a serious oenophile or don’t know the difference between a wine’s bouquet and a wrist corsage, visiting a winery is a great way to learn more about the wine making process and to sample a few Virginia varietals. Skeptical visitors may be surprised to learn wine is produced in Virginia, but they’ll soon discover tasty, top-notch vintages. Many Virginia wineries sport state-of-the-art facilities and have expert winemakers winning national and international awards. Virginia Wine Month

October is Virginia Wine Month [www.virginia.org/winemonth]. What better excuse to visit one of the over 200 wineries and vineyards that dot the rolling landscapes? Many wineries are hosting special events and tastings. Sip a few wines while enjoying vibrant vistas and pick up a bottle or a case to take home for your cellar. Don’t forget your camera, and be sure to bring your friendwho-doesn’t-like wine as the designated driver. Whether you opt for a day of vineyard hopping or make a weekend of it by traversing one of the nearly 30 wine trails [www.virginia.org/winetrails], Virginia wines are sure to delight the palate especially when combined with beautiful scenery, good friends and, perhaps, a few historic sites for good measure. Many wineries are both child and pet friendly. If you’re unsure, just give them a quick call to inquire. Due to Virginia law, tasting fees apply and proof of age identification is checked. Larger groups should make an appointment for tastings. More in-depth information about Virginia wines and wineries, and monthly event schedules are

found on the Virginia Wine website [www.virginiawine.org]. Follow your favorite wineries on social media. Check their websites for information on Twitter handles and Facebook pages.
