FUN Family friendly destinations everyone will love — even teenagers! by Amy Trotter Houston
W
e all look forward to summer vacation and intoning the mantra, “no more lessons, no more books, no more teacher’s dirty looks.” Right? While the prospect of long, lazy days filled with doing plenty of nothing is enticing during the last weeks of Bylong Amy Trotter Houston school, it doesn’t take for boredom to set in. Squash the doldrums of your family’s empty routine by checking out these places for exciting summer fun. We’re sure they will provide kids with lots of great things to write about for the September “What I Did Last Summer” essays.
VIRGINIA BEACH
SUMMER FUN WILLIAMSBURG Just under three hours from Washington, DC, Williamsburg is a two-for-one gem that includes both Colonial Williamsburg and Busch Gardens. Take your time exploring the Revolutionary City where you might spot Thomas Jefferson strolling the streets or George Washington on horseback reviewing the troops. Visit the Governor’s Palace and Capitol to learn more about the early history of our country. Get caught up in the excitement of reading the Declaration of Independence, peek over garden walls, and enjoy the action on the streets. At night, take a haunted tour… if you dare. After stepping back in time, take in the rides and attractions of Busch Gardens. At this Europeaninspired theme park, you can visit Oktoberfest in Germany, take a train trip in Ireland and see the Loch Ness Monster in Scotland, but watch out for Mt. Vesuvius in Italy. Test your intestinal fortitude on roller coasters like Alpengeist and Tempesto before cooling off on the water rides. There are kid-friendly rides, lots of live entertainment and acres beautiful gardens. The park is committed to animal conservation and you just might see Big Bird or Elmo from Sesame Street wandering about the paths.
VIRGINIA BEACH Pack up the swim gear, slip on your flip flops and in 3.5 hours you can be digging your toes into the sand at one of the three beaches that comprise Virginia Beach. Chesapeake Bay Beach has smaller waves suitable for little ones, Sandbridge Beach has the best sunrises perfect for early risers, and Oceanfront Beach has the high energy boardwalk with family-friendly attractions and nostalgic eateries. Head to Atlantic Fun Park, a free-admission carnival along the beach that has kiddie rides, thrill rides and a midway. Don’t miss the Ferris wheel. Away from the beach, the Adventure Park at the Virginia Aquarium will entice thrill seekers ages six and up with multiple zip lines. While at the aquarium check out the live animal habitats and National Geographic 3D movie theater. Enjoy fun and funky exhibits at the Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA). This summer check out the “Turn the Page” exhibit, a retrospective of the contemporary art magazine Hi-Fructose that includes a public art installation, sculpture, photography and painting. If you like history, book a flight on a vintage World War II plane at the Military Aviation Museum.

GOVERNOR’S PALACE – WILLIAMSBURG
BALTIMORE An hour away, Baltimore’s Inner Harbor, bustling with things to do, is an ideal starting point for visiting the city. Check out the cool interactive exhibits at the Maryland Science Center where you can learn more about the Earth, the human body, space, and even blue crabs. There’s an IMAX Theater, a planetarium and a rooftop observatory. Kids up to age 10 will love the Port Discovery Children’s Museum, especially the three-story KidWorks treehouse that is every child’s dream of a backyard retreat. Don’t miss the National Aquarium where the animal life ranges from seahorses, stingrays, and sharks to turtles, snakes, and sloth. There is exciting history to be discovered at Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine and the Maryland Historical Society. If art is not a subject that gets you or your kids excited, you MUST visit the American Visionary Art Museum and see the incredible pieces created by selftaught artists. It’ll change the way you see the subject. More traditional artwork is found at The Walters Art Museum and the Baltimore Museum of Art. For anyone who has studied poetry, visit the Edgar Allen Poe House and Museum before walking to CENTER the Westminster Hall and Burying Ground if you MT. CUBA want to pay your respects.
NATIONAL AQUARIUM – BALTIMORE
DELAWARE A mere two hours from Washington, DC, Delaware is a great destination with beaches, hiking trails, tax-free shopping and lots of history. One of our favorite sites is Fort Delaware where you can experience what life was like during the summer of 1864 when the fort served as a Civil War prison. Bringing the fort to life are costumed interpreters roaming the grounds, working in the blacksmith’s shop, doing the laundry, and firing the cannon. You might assist with the artillery demonstration using live gunpowder. It’s very cool. And loud! If you like gunpowder, visit Hagley Museum and Library where you can see the original black powder mills founded by the du Pont family. Yes, those du Ponts. The family had good taste as exhibited by their many beautiful mansions and glorious gardens that are open to the public: Winterthur Museum, Garden and Library; Nemours Mansion and Garden; Longwood Gardens and Mt. Cuba Center. The Delaware Art Museum has a special Kids’ Corner where you can touch the artwork and create your own. Don’t miss the Crying Giant in the outdoor sculpture garden, and the labyrinth is perfect for quieting unruly beings, whether kids or adults.

SUMMER FUN MADAME TUSSAUDS WAX MUSEUM – WASHINGTON, DC
Where to Take Sports Fans
WASHINGTON, DC Whether you live in the area or are passing through, DC has family-friendly fun for all ages. Visit the memorials along the National Mall and when it gets too warm, step into one of the Smithsonian museums. The National Air and Space Museum has historic airplanes, an Apollo Lunar Module and an IMAX Theater. Check out the size of the dinosaurs and the Hope Diamond at the National Museum of Natural History. Imagine how much butter Julia Child used in her kitchen on display at the National Museum of American History. Head to the National Zoo to see lions, elephants, giant pandas and more. Watch for orangutans traveling overhead via their own transit system, the O Line, and get up close with animals at the Kids’ Farm. Older kids will love the interactive exhibits at the Spy Museum and budding journalists will enjoy those at the Newseum. At Madame Tussauds wax museum, you can pose with Selena Gomez, Taylor Swift, George Clooney and all 44 US presidents. Finally, we love the Albert Einstein memorial in front of the National Academy of Sciences building on Constitution Avenue across from the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. Don’t miss taking a picture of your family sitting in Einstein’s lap. After all, it’s never too early to start thinking about possible Christmas card photos. Say “Cheese!”

Treat baseball fans to a Washington Nationals game in DC or a Baltimore Orioles game at Camden Yards. Or check out minor league baseball teams like the Wilmington Blue Rocks and the Potomac Nationals, where tickets might be easier to get and where the beer is cheaper. ummertime in the nation’s capital can be brutal. When the temperatures climb, escape the heat at one of the many D.C. area waterfront restaurants to enjoy some delicious food and refreshing libations.
Locals and visitors alike can enjoy outdoor dining, spectacular views, and prime peoplewatching, especially when the sun goes down. The waterfront is a prime spot to catch the sunset or enjoy the dazzling night sky. Diners can enjoy a cool breeze and the calming sound of the water, providing an escape from the city. Some of the best al fresco dining in the DC area is along the waterfront with remarkable views of the Potomac River with the beautiful backdrop of the national monuments. Here are some of the top restaurants with waterfront views.

Some of the best views of DC landmarks and the Potomac River are from The Washington Harbour (3000 K St., NW) along the Georgetown waterfront. In the summertime, happy hour along the Georgetown waterfront is a place to see and be seen. Sequoia’s three-tier outdoor terrace offers stunning views of the waterfront with the flotilla of boats and kayaks passing by along with panoramic views of the Kennedy Center, the Watergate, and the Key Bridge. If you prefer to stay out of the humidity, the rear facade of twolevel restaurant is nearly all glass, allowing diners
to enjoy the view of the river without suffering from the heat or the crowds. Sequoia offers modern American cuisine, a formidable wine list, and a renowned River Bar. Don’t miss out on the fresh oysters! Be aware, all of Sequoia’s reservations are for inside only, while dining on the patio is seated on a first come, first serve basis. Next door, offering fresh seafood, Tony and Joe’s, large 200-seat patio offers incredible views of the Kennedy Center, the Key Bridge and Roosevelt Island. Try one of their enormous sandwiches served with a mound of crispy golden fries, seasoned with Old Bay, and tangy coleslaw. Nick’s Riverside Grill (3050 K St., NW), which is often less crowded offers a more comfy atmosphere, with their spacious patio spilling onto Washington Harbour’s boardwalk with a prime view of the large fountain. Be sure to arrive early! A spot under one of their bright-blue umbrellas to watch the sun go down is a coveted seat. Also in Washington Harbour, Farmers Fishers Bakers, an upscale casual restaurant with an in-house bakery, sushi bar, full bar with 24 beer tap, and patio with water views. Like well-know sister restaurant, Founding Farmers, they also “support the American Family Farm” along with made-from-scratch food, delicious hand crafted drinks, and green practices all around. The Washington Harbour is a great option for waterfront dining; there is a something for everyone. Fiola Mare, (3100 K St., NW), by award-winning chef Fabio Trabocchi, specializes in sophisticated fresh seafood, prepared with elegant simplicity. Enjoy fine hospitality, amazing wine, craft cocktails all in a luxe setting with enchanting river views. Although not technically waterfront, Sea Catch restaurant (1054 31st St., NW) offers visitors a charming patio overlooking the beautiful C&O Canal. Take advantage of their complimentary valet parking and their fresh seafood simply prepared in a casual, relaxed atmosphere. On the opposite side of the city, the historic Southwest Waterfront, along Washington, DC’s largest waterfront expanse, is being revitalized. The Wharf located at 7th and Water Streets, SW (1100 Maine Ave. SW), is one of the few surviving open air seafood markets on the east coast. In operation since 1805, it is the oldest continuously operating

fish market in the United States. You’ll find everything from rare fish to Maryland Blue Crabs. The Wharf is currently undergoing an extensive renovation but the fish market and many of the restaurants remain open for business. Cantina Marina (600 Water St., SW), a place that you’d expect to find in Miami, a fun waterside bar with draft beers in plastic cups and Jimmy Buffett playing on the speakers. It’s a place to go and have a margarita and watch the sun move over the water. Enjoy authentic Cajun dishes, such as, the gumbo, catfish, and po’ boys or try the Baja-Californiastyle tacos. Their Crab balls, which are a cross between croquettes and crab cakes are a must have. Besides delicious seafood, you can enjoy mouth-watering barbecue at the Southwest Waterfront. King Ribs Bar-B-Q, a local institution of the community for over 40 years, Bufus Buchanan offers arguably the best BBQ ribs in the city. His amazing ribs, chicken and steaks have a loyal following among longtime residents, and his location along the waterfront also makes DCMetroPlus.com • Summer 2016 •

Kimono & Obi: Romantic Echoes From Japan’s Golden Age
The BMA presents an exquisite selection of late 19th- and mid-20th century kimonos and obis that have never been shown before. These stunning garments were made after the lifting of sumptuary laws during Japan’s Edo period (1603– 1867) when commoners were forbidden to wear showy clothing with colors like red or purple. The Meiji Era (1868–1912) coincided with increased prosperity as Japan entered the industrial age and this newfound wealth was often expressed in lavish garments. Many of these kimonos displayed decorative motifs with symbols of the Imperial Court, especially those referring to the Heian Era (794– 1185), considered Japan’s Golden Age when the court was in its most powerful, refined, and romantic period. In Celebration of Paul Mellon
Paul Mellon played many crucial roles at the National Gallery of Art in carrying out the founding vision of his father, Andrew, who had laid plans for the museum before his death in 1937. The younger Mellon was a major donor of funds and works of art as well as a valiant advocate for the Gallery’s architecture (both the East and West Buildings). The great majority of Paul Mellon’s gifts,
however, are works of art on paper, which, because of their sensitivity to light, cannot be constantly displayed. Timed to coincide with the Gallery’s 75th anniversary, this celebratory exhibition brings together some 80 of the finest pastels, watercolors, drawings, prints, and illustrated books given to the Gallery by Paul Mellon. Among the works on display are evocative watercolors by Winslow Homer and Édouard Manet, powerful portrait drawings by JeanAuguste-Dominique Ingres and Edgar Degas, sporting lithographs by George Bellows, a pen landscape by Vincent van Gogh, and cubist compositions by Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque. Two days later, The Pennsylvania Evening Post became the first newspaper to publish the declaration. On display in this compelling exhibit is one of only 19 known copies of the historic newspaper.
