CELEBRATING WOMEN IN BUSINESS

W

omen wear many hats – mother, wife, daughter, employee, friend, household manager, cook, nursemaid, to name a few. While we are so busy running around juggling the numerous responsibilities in our lives, we often forget to take some time to look after ourselves and to de-stress. So how can women find ways to cope? 1) Eat well and exercise. Healthy food means a healthy, strong body with more energy. It also means good mental health which results in better coping skills. 2) Delegate. Share the household chores. Ask for help if you need it. Don’t try and do it all!

3) Get organised. As much as possible, plan your week. Make a to-do list. It helps to get things done and prevents you from forgetting tasks. 4) Socialise. Keep in touch with friends - meet up for coffee or have a monthly girls’ night. Women enjoy talking to and confiding in their girlfriends. It’s therapeutic and advice from friends can help with problem-solving. 5) Limit social media. Take a break from Facebook, Twitter, What’s App and email. It becomes an addiction and eats away at your time. Spend the time on a hobby, go for that manicure, go for a walk on the beach or play with the kids. Remember, if you are not taking care of yourself first, you won’t be able to effectively take care of everyone else in your life.

Women and Safety

• If walking by yourself, always be aware of your surroundings. Avoid being distracted by talking on your cell phone.

• If someone tries to grab you, don't be a hero, rather turn around, run and yell, "Help!" Do anything you can to draw attention to yourself.

• When asking for directions and someone offers to show you the way by having you follow them, do not go. Just ask them to point you in the right direction.

• You return to your car and it has a flat tyre. Back away, return wherever you came from (restaurant, store, etc) and call for help.

• Always park in well - lit areas if you plan to arrive, leave after dark and be sure to locate your keys prior to going to your car.

Recipe, Food, Catering BUTTERNUT, SWEET POTATO AND BLAAUWKRANTZ SALAD SERVES 6-8

1 BUTTERNUT 2 medium sized SWEET POTATOES 45ml OLIVE OIL 5-10ml GROUND CINNAMON 30ML HONEY 5ml GROUND CUMIN (OPTIONAL) 1-2 packets BABY SPINACH LEAVES 125gr BLAAUWKRANTZ 1 large RED ONION, SLICED BALSAMIC VINEGAR

Preheat oven to 180°C. Peel the butternut and sweet potatoes into cubes. Place in a roasting pan. Drizzle with olive oil and honey and sprinkle with ground cinnamon and cumin (if used). Mix through. Place in oven and bake for 20 minutes until the vegetables are tender but still crunchy. Leave to cool in a pan. Arrange spinach leaves on a platter and top with baked vegetables, sliced onion and Blaauwkrantz. Drizzle with Balsamic Vinegar before serving or serve vinegar separately. Other serving suggestion: Prepare the vegetables as above, but leave out the onion and the spinach leaves. Crumble the Blaauwkrantz over the hot vegetables and serve as an accompaniment to roast or a braai. Also perfect as a vegetarian dish.

Winter Health Boosters: Sweet Potato and Butternut Super Sweet Potato

The humble sweet potato is very versatile – bake in its’ jacket, mash it up or make as a dessert. They are heart-healthy and a great source of: 1) Vitamin C – great for winter to keep the immune system strong. 2) Vitamin B6 which helps to reduce the risk for heart attacks. 3) Fibre. They contain up to twice as much fibre as any other potato. 4) Potassium which helps to lower blood pressure. Bravo for Butternut! A wonderful winter vegetable packed with great health benefits. 1) Rich in phytonutrients and antioxidants and found to have anti-inflammatory properties. 2) As with sweet potato, also a good source of potassium and Vitamin B6. 3) Contains carotenoids (alpha-carotene and beta-carotene) which form part of Vitamin A and are good for healthy eyes and skin. 4) Another brilliant source of fibre and keeps you feeling full for longer. DID YOU KNOW: Butternut is technically a fruit because it contains seeds.

LEADING YOUR BUSINESS SUCCESSFULLY THROUGH THE "WINTER" SEASON by Denzel p Smit So it's that "time" of the year that business is slow.....for some. The time when we hear sayings like: "business is normally slow in winter" or " its our slow season". Yet, for others it's..."business as usual". So the questions is: "How can it be business as usual for some all year long and others have seasons?" I have come to learn and understand that in order to conduct business as usual, whatever business one is in, you have to do.. SOMETHING UNUSUAL! What worked yesterday, will not necessarily work today. Our businesses, like most things in life, are affected by daily circumstances. We therefore have to be proactive and dare not wait until "winter" is upon us. In fact, we know already, that next year, this time, IT WILL BE WINTER AGAIN. So we have choices, we can either wait and hibernate like the bear or we can do something different like the ant. Isn't winter time a good time to "stay in-doors"? This does not mean that we have to hibernate, rest or simply just be lazy. This is the best time to ask: " Why am I inside while others are out making money? What am I not doing that they are?" Surely by now we all know that we cannot be doing the same things over and over and expect different results.... So let's start using our good times and then make time to prepare for our "bad" times. Ask questions like: "What am I not doing, that I could be doing differently, Why am I not doing what I could be doing differently, What will I gain, if I do things differently?" You'll be amazed at how winter times in your business will be transformed into summer times as you, lead your business from wherever you are!
