Perfectly Fit for World Health Day

This April and beyond, let's grind and push ourselves physically to run the extra kilometer, to do an extra class at gym, to choose the stairs instead of the lift, to park further from entrances so that we can fit in an extra walk (take an umbrella with, just in case), and discipline ourselves with what we choose to eat and drink. World Health Day takes place on 7 April and ReConnect in conjunction with Claremont Improvement District Company (CIDC) hosts another Perfect Fit event on 12 April at Sunclare Square in Claremont. This is the third Perfect Fit event and it is slowly growing in popularity. It’s the perfect chance to have some free health screenings on blood pressure, cholesterol, glucose and BMI. Dancing, a mini boot camp and spinning sessions put a fun twist on staying healthy. That’s the thing… exercise doesn’t have to be a chore. Here are some easy and fun ways to keep active: Skipping (rope jumping). If you ever had a skipping rope when you were a kid, you will remember happily skipping for ages! It’s a simple and easy way to exercise. Rollerblading. Not only for young kids, even older people can don a pair of blades and blissfully zoom down the boardwalk! Zumba. Zumba has become very popular with many gyms offering classes. It’s a highenergy workout that not only gets the blood pumping but is filled with a healthy dose of fun!

Perfectly Healthy for Autumn

Health Wellness & Beauty

With autumn on our doorstep, step up your intake of these healthy foods to help prevent those annoying colds and sniffles as we head towards winter. An Apple A Day. Not just a cute saying, but apples really do keep the body healthy. They contain flavonoids (great antioxidants) and have anti-inflammatory and anti-allergy properties (good for those who tend to suffer from change of season allergies). Pumpkins. Filled with beta-carotene, antioxidants, vitamin C and folate. The seeds are also a good source of zinc and Omega 3 fatty acids. Citrus Fruits. There’s a reason citrus fruits come in to season during autumn. It’s nature’s way of giving our bodies a head start against colds and flu and other typical winter illnesses. Packed full of vitamin C, folate and potassium, citrus fruits are great at boosting the immune system.

So keep fit and healthy this autumn and you’ll be rolling into winter with a spring in your step!

Tuna Burgers (Serves 4)

1 tin of tuna in brine, drained; 1 large onion, finely chopped; 100g breadcrumbs; salt and freshly ground black pepper; 75ml milk; 4 tbsp plain flour for coating; 1 tbsp oil for brushing 1.Thoroughly mash the tuna, and then mix the onion and breadcrumbs. Add seasoning and mix well before stirring in enough milk to bind the mixture. 2. Pat the mixture together in a bowl, then cut it into 4 portions. Sprinkle the flour on a clean surface and shape each portion of mixture into a burger measuring 7.5 – 10cm in diameter. Coat the burgers well with flour when shaped. 3.Place the burgers under the grill for about 2 minutes

before brushing lightly with oil – this short cooking firms the top of the burgers, making it easier to brush the oil on – then continue cooking for another 5 minutes, until crisp and well browned on top. Turn the burgers and cook as for the first side.

Serving suggestion Serve the burgers in toasted split buns, with lettuce, tomatoes and cucumber or Serve with baked beans and a baked potato or For an Easter treat, serve with pickled onions and curry sauce and Hot Cross Buns.

5 Reasons to encourage green fingers

1. Learning about where foods come from, and the growth processes from seed to table, is a wonderful lesson for kids 2. Tending to a garden is a great way to get the family outdoors together. 3. Kids will often eat the vegetables they’ve grown themselves. 4. Gardening is a great form of exercise – picking up bags, pushing a wheelbarrow, bending to pull out weeds, squatting to dig holes, all to help burn calories and tone muscles. 5. Kids will learn valuable lessons about patience, responsibility, nurturing, cooporation, creativity, the cycle of life etc. 08 |reCONNECT Magazine | April 2014

Business & Finance

Persevering with Purpose.....

It’s a fact that people enter the business world for their own account, for different reasons. I remember when I decided to pursue a career in law, I had my reasons. In fact when people asked me why I would give up a comfortable government position to become self-employed, I could list the reasons. Whatever those reasons were, not many of them, if any, were big enough to help me make it through the tough times. Tough times are never part of the dreams of starting any business. It is however, part of the reality of growing ones business. So how then, do we persevere, through those challenging times when giving up seems to be the easiest thing to do? I have come to learn that in life, nothing that

we attempt doing ends wrong, it starts wrong. It therefore comes back to the questions of WHY did I start my business? Whatever your reason might be, if it does not coincide with your purpose and passion, you will find it extremely more difficult through those challenging times. Having the skill or qualifications to pursue a certain business career, is never enough. Our skill should be supported by a deep sincere passion to do it and then doing whatever we do should have a purpose. To often in life and business, we tend to concentrate solely on the other "P" - Profit. We tend to forget that our talents and even our ability to do business and create wealth is given to us but not just for us. We all have a responsibility to use that in order to contribute to a better society. So in conclusion, when the challenges of business and life comes knocking and it will, remember that it is our Purpose + Passion that will enable us to Persevere.
