arli painting is an ancient art form that originated in Maharashtra. It uses earthy colours and has become a popular home décor item. To promote this ancient art and encourage talented artists Sudhakar Jaywant, resident of Sacred Heart Town, Wanowrie teaching Wa r l i p a i n t i n g i n a l l schools of Kondhwa, Wanowrie area free of cost. "Warli painting is the easiest form of painting. You can draw it through the use of small triangles and circles. It gives confidence to children and once they specialized in this form, then they will defiantly try different forms. My ultimate aim is create interest about painting and guide the students who cannot learn

painting due to economic constrains," says Sudhakar. The 76 year-old artist completed his education from the well-known J.J. Art School, Mumbai in 1957 by securing a gold medal. He was working as a tin painting artist in England-based Metal Box Company at Mumbai. "After retirement we shifted to Pune. I always wanted to do something for my urge for painting. Then the idea of teaching and taking workshops of Warli paintings came to my mind. I studied this form and approached some schools and started teaching in my society also. Within a short time I got tremendous response from children and school principals," he recollects. Warli is an extremely

rudimentary wall paintings made by tribals using a very basic graphic vocabulary of a circle, a triangle and a square. The circles and triangles come from their observation of Nature. The circle represents the sun and the moon and the triangles denote mountains and pointed trees.

'Tendulkari' caricatures celebrate golden jubilee I only draw for the moment when my caricature speaks without words. The intention of my first exhibition in, 50s was to introduce the language of lines to the people. I found it is achieved mostly at the 50th exhibition. Visitors experienced that some pictures are now being understood after seeing many exhibitions. I am completely satisfied at this age with whatever work I have done,” says renowned Marathi cartoonist Mangesh Tendulkar on the last day of his golden jubilee exhibition.

Sudhakar is now teaching in Apanga Kalyankari Society, Mahadji Shinde Primary and High School, Sadhu Vasvani Gurukul and Saint Mira High School. He is going to teach in Rosary School, Kondhwa and is willing to cover all the schools in Kondhwa area. "Warli painting is in great

demand nowadays. If these children become specialized in making these paintings, it will help them to generate income for their education," says the passionate artist. He has also started expressing environmental and social issues through his paintings so that children can be made aware of these issues and it reflects in their paintings too.

It was inaugurated by the famous actor Nana Patekar. The first two books of caricatures 'Tendulkari Strokes' and 'Unseen Reality' on traffic were published on the

occasion. “The lines by the hand of Tendulkar note the exact contradictions in the community. I like his caricatures of eminent politicians. Their nature can be seen on their faces,” said Nana at the time of inauguration. “The response from Punekars to the exhibition was overwhelming. Caricatures drawn after 1995 are displayed in this exhibition. Keen observation, imagination and noting discrepancies are his strength . The mischievousness in them compels anyone to laugh.
