ontrary to expectations, the Traffic Month launched with much fanfare in November did not make any impact in the city. It was aimed at decongesting the jam-packed roads and ''chaurahas', but it failed to produce the desired result. While the traffic police claim that it was a success, many people, including RWAs, view it as a mere administrative exercise. The focus was on the busiest ''chaurahas' and the worst congested areas like Purana Bus Adda 'chauraha', Maliwara Chowk, Tu r a b N a g a r C h o w k , Chaudhry Morh, Ghanta Ghar, Delhi Gate, Hapur Ti r a h a , M e e r u t R o a d Tiraha, Mohan Nagar 'chauraha', Lal Kuan, in front of Collectorate, Hapur Chungi, Nasirpur Phatak, MM College, New Bus Depot, Bhatia Morh,
Rakesh Marg, NH-24 and UP Border. Launching Traffic Month, SP Traffic Anil Kumar said, "Initially we will apply prohibitory orders to auto rickshaws and automobiles in order to bring about some diversions. Later, we will take up the errant and heavy vehicles, so that there would be smooth traffic in coming days." Since then they have applied several procedures but traffic remains on the same track. Stereotyped action At initial stages, SSP Akhil Kumar had clearly ordered his men to follow the soft technique while they were going to teach the traffic lessons to the people. Instead of getting him right, most traffic personnel used to enforce the agenda on bikers and innocent vehicle owners. They failed to control the errant
autos, 'daggamar' vehicles, trucks and trolleys. These errant vehicles went on moving in their usual style. During this Road Safety Month, 31 persons died, while more than three dozen children, men and women were badly injured. In real terms, police confined themselves only to checking and issuing challan to vehi-

c l e owners. They failed to remove the encroachers from the roads, though they claimed that it was also an anti-encroachment drive. Training camps were organised at several schools and colleges of the city to educate the youngsters on traffic discipline, but as usual it was an exercise in futility, since these young drivers were in no mood to learn. Instead, they just needed harsh punishment. Police were trying to educate the public through

posters during the Traffic Month. Pollution checking camp, green card camp, blood group camp and even insurance camps were organised but all went unnoticed due to the dismissive attitude of the police personnel. One could see the overloaded public transports, sirens pressure, red and blue hooters lights, and black glasses on cars and faulty number plates on many vehicles. SP, Traffic, Anil Kumar finally accepted the truth that the traffic jam was the biggest challenge before the city. He said, "We got spontaneous result on various roads immediately after removing the encroachment. And we are committed to doing so in days to come." Traffic at a glance Bulldozers and attentive police pickets could not deter the people who were always responsible to create insecurity and indiscipline on the roads. A large number of RWA m e m b e r s have lodged complaints to the DM of the city about these fake checking on various roads. Kuldeep Saxena, a senior member of the Federation of Indirapuram RWA, has sharply reacted to this recently concluded Traffic Month. He said, "At most of the 'chaurahas', traffic police stopped every driver in the name of checking documents instead of telling him or her about traffic rules in a dignified manner." Admits Sunil Srivastava, ADM, city, "By taking lessons from previous experiences, we realise that the Traffic Month did not come up to our expectations due to lack of co-ordination among different departments."
