Year Four is a Year of Firsts

4 Outstanding Educators 5 Meet the Class of 2018 6 2013-14 Annual Report

Mission Statement DePaul Cristo Rey High School, sponsored by the Sisters of Charity of Cincinnati, transforms students into high school and college graduates by helping them realize their full potential. Our Catholic, college prep curriculum and innovative work study program combine to form young women and men of integrity, faith, tenacity and purpose.

It’s a year of firsts at DePaul Cristo Rey High School. While it is the fourth school year since DPCR opened in 2011, it is an historic one with a series of milestone firsts for students, their teachers and the entire school community, including: • The first year DPCR has all four classes, freshmen through seniors. The significance of this first senior class was recognized in a Senior Commissioning Ceremony held on August 28. Each member of the Class of 2015 received a DPCR pin symbolizing their ascent to senior status. • The largest freshman class to date; 95 freshmen began classes on August 26.

• Preparations for the school’s first graduation ceremony on Sunday, May 31. • The first college scholarship, awarded to senior Ahustin Crawford, after he participated in the Accounting Careers Awareness Program at The Ohio State University. The scholarship can be used at the college of his choice. • The first college acceptance letter arrived in late August to senior Londyn Logan from Tuskegee University in Alabama. She is the first student to put her class on the path to 100 percent college acceptance.

DPCR Welcomes New Board Members DePaul Cristo Rey High School has welcomed three new members to the Board of Directors. Joining the board are: David S. Arends, president and CEO of CR architecture + design; Timothy A. Howe, SJ, president of St. Xavier High School; and Patricia Robertson, Catholic education volunteer and 2014 Rey of Light chair.

Golf Outing a Swinging Success For the third year, golfers took a swing for scholarships at the DePaul Cristo Rey Golf Classic. Held at Losantiville Country Club, this year’s outing was again a sellout with more than 115 golfers taking to the links on September 12 in support of the DPCR Scholarship Fund.

We thank our generous sponsors for making it an outstanding success.

Timothy A. Howe, SJ

Each will serve a three-year term on the Board.

New Spaces Planned for Learning, Praying and Playing As DPCR continues

to grow, school leaders have planned four capital projects to accommodate more students and their learning and co-curricular needs. Fundraising efforts are already underway seeking major gifts from foundations and individuals to support these plans. School leaders will move ahead with each project once its funding is completely secured. These projects are:

Learning Commons

DPCR occupies the site of the former Concordia Lutheran Church and School. The church seated 250 and is no longer able to hold all DPCR students and staff at the same time. That space is now designated for a Learning Commons which will include: • a traditional library with books and electronic resources • flexible space for studying and group activities • two small group study rooms • an online card catalogue system • space and resources for a librarian/ media specialist to work with students and teach them college-ready research skills.

Cost = $665,800 with $335,000 already committed

Chapel/ Prayer Room

With DPCR’s growth, allschool liturgies and assemblies are now held in the gymnasium. The largest classroom in the main school building will be renovated into a sacred space for students and staff to gather individually or in small groups for prayer, reflection and occasionally small group liturgies. This chapel/prayer room will include: • seating for up to 40 people • religious art • liturgical furniture • stained glass over the existing windows and depicting images of water and light signifying the

Design of Learning Commons

Design of Chapel/Prayer Room Baptism and the light of Christ. Cost = $100,000 with $65,000 already committed

Visual Arts Classrooms/ Gallery Space

The basement of the former church once housed the Concordia school cafeteria and is currently used as the athletics weight room. The weight room will move closer to the gymnasium and the space will be renovated into a designated visual arts area to include: • an art classroom with studio work space for students • gallery space to display student works • storage for art supplies and works in progress • sinks for cleanup. Cost = $87,000

Locker Room and Storage Addition

DePaul Cristo Rey offers seven competitive athletic teams for students with plans to add more. Currently there are no locker room facilities available for home or visiting teams, or to support the needs of physical education classes. This project calls for building a separate athletic building adjacent to the Student Center to include: • boys’ lockers rooms • girls’ locker rooms • athletic equipment storage. Cost = $580,000 If you’d like to learn more about supporting one of these projects, please contact Development Director Sparkle Worley at 513-861-0600 or sparkle. worley@depaulcristorey.org.

Three at DPCR Named Outstanding Educators Three DePaul Cristo Rey teachers have been named Outstanding Educators by Cincy Magazine, and were recognized in the August/ September issue. Religion Teacher/ Campus Minister Jessica Ebert Jessica Ebert, Corporate Work Study Program Senior Coordinator Travis Rowley, and Social Studies Teacher Chris Wilke were among those noted in the fourth annual K-12 Travis Rowley Outstanding Educators Recognition Program. To select this year’s honorees the magazine noted, “While we received many nomination forms, we picked the Chris Wilke teachers that went above and beyond the expectations of what a teacher needs to do.”

Sponsor A Student’s Dream As last school year drew to a close, more than 50 families were still struggling to finish their tuition payments. At DPCR each family’s circumstances are individually assessed to determine their tuition obligation on a scale of $500 to $5,000. While most DPCR families fall into the $500 tuition category, even that amount is a struggle as Director of Business Administration Renee Hargrove knows firsthand. “As families shared their concerns about their unpaid bills, the most frequent reasons were a job loss, large medical expenses or homelessness,” she explains. “In keeping with the mission of our school, we won’t turn a student away if the family can’t pay.” Increasing scholarship dollars to students helps offset this issue. Last year DPCR launched the “Sponsor A Student’s Dream” Scholarship Fund, offering supporters the option to fund a full, half or partial scholarship for a student. Dream Fund sponsors receive personal letters from student scholarship recipients, the opportunity to meet them in person, and the deep personal satisfaction of making a direct impact on a young person’s life. The Fund is off to a good start and we’d love to have more sponsors to allow us to help more families. To “Sponsor A Student’s Dream,” or learn more about this program, please contact Development Director Sparkle Worley at 513-861-0600 or sparkle. worley@depaulcristorey.org.

Sister Janice Ernst Receives First Spirit of Service Award Sister Janice Ernst, SC, received the first annual DePaul Cristo Rey Spirit of Service Award, which recognizes an individual who has offered exemplary service to the school community. She was honored at the school’s Volunteer Appreciation Reception in May and is pictured here with Principal Andrew Farfsing. S. Janice began volunteering at DPCR in 2010 before the school even opened, and continues into this school year.

Corporate Sponsorship is a Triple Win The impact and success of DePaul Cristo Rey’s Corporate Work Study Program is growing and becoming more widely known. Yet we often hear from companies and individuals who want to participate in the program and help young people, but don’t have the capacity or structure to hire student workers. DPCR’s Corporate Sponsorship Program offers another alternative, and offers sponsors a triple return on their investment. Corporate Sponsors, including businesses, individuals and foundations, fund the work of students at local nonprofit organizations such as the Taft Museum of Art and Freestore Foodbank. This provides workers for nonprofits which typically have tight budgets and limited staff. The students receive all of the same benefits of working in a professional

Meet the Class of 2018

environment as their counterparts at corporate locations – honing work skills while getting exposure to career options and role models. The Corporate Sponsors get a triple return on this investment – helping a student, helping a nonprofit, and helping themselves because support of this program is tax-deductible. The greatest benefit may be to the community as a whole, because DPCR is transforming students into well-educated, collegeready future workers and Corporate Sponsors are thus contributing to the future economic development of our city. If you’d like more information on the benefits of this program, please contact Corporate Sponsors Coordinator Abby Held at 513-861-0600 or abby.held@ depaulcristorey.org.

Dear Friends of DePaul Cristo Rey, Each year it has been a privilege to provide an update to you – our donors, Corporate Partners, sponsors, friends – on the progress of our young school. We know that our students are at the heart of our mission and that you are involved with DPCR because of your continued faith in and hope for these young people. As I stood in the middle of a S. Jeanne Bessette, OSF, Ed.D. crowd of 360 Rey of Light attendees in April, I was awestruck that so many people had gathered to support these young women and men, particularly since just four or five years ago none had likely heard of DePaul Cristo Rey. Yet here they were, along with all of you who have supported us this past year, united in a mission to transform the lives of another generation of students. You are helping to light the way for over 250 students as they find their way in the worlds of high school, corporate work study experience, and soon into college and beyond. Believe me when I tell you that our students are aware of you – they know that many, many people are rooting for them and helping to provide the resources that a Cristo Rey school needs, especially in its start-up years. They are amazed to know that so many people care what happens to them. They are proud to talk to you about their school, and they are humbled that so many of you want to hear their stories. They are already talking about how they will give back to future generations of DPCR students when they become the professionals they hope to be using the education and work experience they are receiving here today. Your example of generosity and community engagement is an important part of what inspires them! Thank you again for believing in DPCR, for growing with us, and for offering support in so many ways and at so many levels. YOU are critical to the success of DePaul Cristo Rey and our young people! In gratitude,

S. Jeanne Bessette, OSF, Ed.D. President/CEO

Memorable Moments of 2013-14 There were many memorable moments in the 2013-14 academic year. The year’s highlights include: The opening of DPCR’s hillside campus in October. One of the three new buildings, the Seton Science Center, was named to honor DPCR’s sponsors, the Sisters of Charity of Cincinnati. DPCR added its first Advanced Placement (AP) level class to the curriculum. Students enrolled in AP Government have the option to take the AP exam in the spring, and with a passing score, receive college credit for their work. Full accreditation granted to DPCR from the Ohio Catholic School Accrediting Association. DPCR had received provisional accreditation with its opening charter, and achieved full accreditation in record time.

DPCR’s first student drama production, “Macbeth,” received rave reviews. The junior class performed the Shakespearean classic as a culmination of their yearlong fine arts drama class. DPCR inaugurated its first chapter and inducted 14 students into the National Honor Society, one of the oldest and most prestigious national organizations for high school students. The student members met the NHS high standards of scholarship, service, leadership and character.
