Stellar Event Shines Light on Scholarship Fund

Generous guests, outstanding volunteers, exciting auction and raffle prizes, and a festive atmosphere all added up to outstanding success for the second annual Rey of Light Scholarship Benefit for Students. Held April 12 in the DePaul Cristo Rey Student Center, this dinner and auction event netted approximately $300,000 for the school scholarship fund. More than 400 guests attended this year’s event enjoying a cocktail hour with silent auction and raffle sales, followed by dinner

and an exciting oral auction of 35 unique items and packages including

vacations to Mexico, Hawaii and the British Virgin Islands. A paddle raise for scholarships was part of the oral auction allowing bidders to contribute directly to the scholarship fund and by itself raised $71,500. Rey of Light was cochaired by Pat and Steve Robertson, who were assisted by advisor and DPCR Board member Barbara Bennie. A cadre of more than 100

volunteers assisted with everything from securing auction gifts to decorating, selling raffle tickets and cleaning up the day after. With significant sponsor support (see list on page 2) and a gift from The Clement and Ann Buenger Foundation which covered all event expenses, 100 percent of the evening’s proceeds were directed to the scholarship fund. The growth of this fund is critical to support our students, all of whom receive financial assistance to afford a DPCR education.

Rey of Light Chairs Steve and Pat Robertson greeted guests with President Sister Jeanne Bessette (center).

FROM THE PRESIDENT

Rey of Light Sponsors

Dear Friends,

Presenting Sponsors

A

ll of us at DePaul Cristo Rey are still basking in the warmth and energy generated at this year’s Rey of Light Scholarship Benefit for Students. It was an incredible evening with old and new friends, and our school glowed in the light of their generosity that night. I thank all of you who joined us and the many more who couldn’t attend, but sent donations and gifts of auction items. I must also thank the numerous volunteers who put countless hours into the planning and execution of this major event led by the tireless efforts of Pat Robertson, Barb Bennie and Jane Yost. On the same day as Rey of Light, our juniors took their first ACT test. While taking this college entrance exam is a standard procedure for most high school students, it was yet another milestone for ours, as most will be the first in their families to enter college. Getting our juniors to this point has required much effort, prayer and financial assistance. It was so fitting that the ACT and Rey of Light coincided because both represent the power of DePaul Cristo Rey and its supporters to transform young lives. Everyone who attended, volunteered or contributed to this event, and those who support us in so many other ways, are all Reys of Light to our students. Thank you for joining us in our most important work of keeping their hopes of a bright future alive. Gratefully, Sister Jeanne Bessette, OSF, Ed.D. President
