PERPETUAL FOREST
TOKYO-OCHANOMIZU | JAPAN FALL 2017 PROFFESSOR | TORU MITANI + MANABU CHIBA
Perpetual Forest is a mixed use development strategy that embraces the river front as a vital threshold between the urban and nature. Through interventions that invoke the notion of ‘flow x stay’, and gestures that bring the riverfront environment to the forefront, Perpetual Forest represents a design scheme that satisfies present development goals while building towards a positive ecological future. By employing two different building strategies and a continuouus landscape design, the linear site becomes a space that both connects and creates urban environments. On the river, diagonal stuctures are placed to accrue sediment and promote a naturalized river edge. Over time, the river’s edge will grow, the buildings will fall, and the urban forest will persist, giving Tokyo relief from the urban condition.

AUTO-SUCCESSION
BOSTON | MASSACHUSETTS SPRING 2017 PROFFESSOR | MARTHA SCHWARTZ + MARKUS JATSCH
If we aren’t careful, autonomous vehicles will be detrimental to our cities. Auto-succession, is a project that looks at what landscape architects could do with the space that is created by making completely autonomous cities. Using Boston in 2060 as the urban actor, Auto-succession looks at the drastically differernt typologies that exist within the townships of Brookline and Boston and proposes 4 unique ways of remediating these space for public use and water infrastructure. Very low density residential (in Brookline), high density residential (in Boston), and a commercial typology (in Brookline) were chosen to best represent the entire study area. Suspended permeable roadways, paved driving strips, lane narrowing, and parking lot reclamation are all ways in which we are able to get space back within our urban environment.

BOSTON | MASSACHUSETTS FALL 2016 | COLLABORATION WITH SIYU JIANG PROFFESSOR | SERGIO LOPEZ-PINIERO + PABLO PEREZ-RAMOS
Object | Field is an urban design strategy that allows for the 3 main systems of a city (Streets, Buildings, and Hydrology) to successfully operate both independently and in conjunction with one another. Inspired by classic landscape typologies, the field is juxtaposed against the modernistic objects to create a diverse urban fabric that is able to adapt over time. The essence of our solution to coastal resilient cities lies within this juxtaposition and represents an idea. That is the idea that we can design forces, that would otherwise oppose each other, to not only work with each other, but build a strong and flexible base for future communities to prosper on. Whether they are natural forces, such as sea level rise, or man made forces such as urbanization, if we design to each of their strengths, and allow them to work with one another, we can design an adaptive city using object | field

RE[SURGE]NCE
WILL+KANKAKEE COUNTY | ILLINOIS FALL 2015 | COLLABORATION WITH HANNAH CUSICK PROFFESSOR | JESSICA HENSON
Resurgence is a multi-faceted regional plan defined by the rivers and their corresponding floodplains. This Resurgence ring is the foundation for new regional design strategies. Historically, natural systems were the landscape of the Midwestern region. With the introduction of the Public Land Survey System in 1818, these natural systems were viewed as economically insignificant in their current state. Prairie, forest and wetland were replaced with man-made counterparts. The value of these natural systems was realized once they were gone. Resurgence unearths the value of these historical, natural systems and uses them in conjunction with current, man-made systems to revolutionize future development.
