We are absolutely delighted that you have joined us as we come together to celebrate the outstanding accomplishments and remarkable success of our incredible sorors within our chapter.
This year's theme, "Celebrating the Phenomenal Alpha Kappa Alpha Woman," truly embodies the spirit, strength, and dedication that our sorors possess. This event provides an opportunity for us to honor and recognize the extraordinary contributions they have made, not only within our chapter but also in their personal and professional lives.
Today, we will commemorate the sorors who have bridged, reactivated, and transferred into the Alpha Rho Omega Chapter. Their commitment to our sisterhood is commendable, and we are delighted to have them as part of our chapter. Additionally, we will celebrate our new jewels, the bright and promising undergraduates who represent the future of our organization and pay tribute to the sorors who have become an Ivy Beyond the Wall this past year.
Furthermore, this is an occasion to acknowledge and cherish the bonds of sisterhood and family ties that exist within our chapter. It is an attestation to the strength and support we provide to one another, fostering a sense of unity and camaraderie that is unparalleled.

2024 Annual June Breakfast Celebration

ALPHA RHO OMEGA CHAPTER History
The cold winds blowing through the campus of Howard University on January 15, 1908, could not diminish the warmth in the hearts of Anna Easter Brown, Beulah Elizabeth Burke, Lillie Burke, Margaret Flagg, Ethel Hedgemon, Marjorie Hill, Lavinia Norman, Lucy Diggs Slowe, and Marie Woolfolk. Their vision of an organization dedicated to cultural enrichment, scholarship, leadership, high ethical and moral values, “racial uplift”, and interest in college life after graduation had come to fruition. With permission from the administration of Howard University, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority became the first African American Greek-letter organization for college-educated women in the United States. Affectionately referred to as “The Founders,” these nine women, who were privileged to the extent that circumstances allowed them to seek and obtain higher education, had planted the seeds for a sorority that today in 2024 claims over 355,000 members in graduate and undergraduate chapters in 12 countries including the United States, Bahamas, Bermuda, Canada, Dubai, Germany, Japan, Liberia, Nigeria, South Korea, South Africa, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
Let us fast forward to December 15, 1922. Ten inches of snow had fallen on the city of Detroit two days earlier. This weather could not discourage the seven young women who had successfully applied to establish the first chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority in the state of Michigan. Having paid the initiation fee of $2.00, they gathered at the home of Dr. and Mrs. Frank Raiford (Lula Raiford, sister of Nellie Watts) to receive Miss L. Pearl Mitchell from Kalamazoo, Michigan, who was sent to organize and initiate the members of Xi Chapter.
The Charter Members of the newly formed chapter were:
•Beulah Tyrrell – A native of Lynchburg, Virginia, and a graduate of Oberlin College
•Lorainetta Henderson – Born in Detroit, Michigan, and a graduate of the Detroit Conservatory of Music
•Hazel Lyman – Originally from Pensacola, Florida, and a graduate of Fisk University
•Edna Dale – Born in Montgomery, Alabama, and a graduate of Detroit City College
•Mary Cassandra Scott – Born and raised in Columbiana, Alabama, and a graduate of Fisk University
•Nellie Watts – Born in Atlanta, Georgia, and a graduate of Atlanta University
•Alice Boyd Burton – A native of Natchez, Mississippi, and a graduate of Fisk University
These accomplished, cultured, and educated women who despite the hardships inflicted by segregation, prejudice, and an economic depression left their mark on this community in many different ways. From 1922 until 1930, Xi Chapter accepted graduates and undergraduates as members, with the expectation that once Detroit City College was accredited, a chapter would be established on the campus of an accredited college/university for undergraduates.
On May 30, 1930, Detroit City College (which became Wayne State University) received its anticipated accreditation and Alpha Rho Omega Chapter received its designation as a graduate chapter. The year 1936 marked the chartering of Beta Mu Chapter on the campus of Wayne University (later to become Wayne State University) and in 1974, Theta Tau Chapter was chartered on the campus of the University of Detroit-Marygrove with the assistance of Alpha Rho Omega Chapter. Xi Chapter remained as the City-Wide Chapter for undergraduates until 1947 when its charter was transferred in 1949 to Michigan Normal Teachers College (now known as Eastern Michigan University). The history of Alpha Rho Omega Chapter is not defined by dates or any one individual. As the beneficiary of the vision, leadership, and commitment of the sorority’s founders, our charter members embraced the mission of encouraging and cultivating high scholastic and ethical standards among college women and reaching back to others, so they might benefit from the progress and success of those privileged to lead. These women led by example; and they live on in the hearts of Alpha Rho Omega women as shining examples of what we can and should be in providing service to all mankind. Over the past 102 years, 43 women have accepted the call to the leadership of Alpha Rho Omega Chapter. They coordinated their efforts with those of our national leadership. They have reached out to the larger Detroit community and established partnerships with multiple organizations in an effort to address the needs of our citizens and to channel the energy of our children into positive and productive areas. And as our reach has grown, our numbers have expanded, and the breadth of our programs speaks to the history that started in the hearts of nine women 116 years ago. Alpha Rho Omega Chapter leads by example.
In 1987, the members invested in the City of Detroit with the purchase of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Foundation of Detroit Building, which has been renamed The Beulah T. Whitby Foundation. Today, it exists as the nonprofit arm of the chapter and has served the community through a variety of programs and collaborations, such as the Detroit Urban League, MOTTEP Life Walk, Ronald McDonald House, AKAFD Scholarship and Selected Citizens, Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure, and the United Negro College Fund to name a few. Today Alpha Rho Omega Chapter celebrates 101 years of history; 101 years of sisterhood. We take pride in the services and accomplishments, both individually and collectively, of Alpha Kappa Alpha women everywhere and remain committed to the history founded and nurtured in our hearts. It is this love that sustains us as a chapter and holds the promise that the next 100 years will be filled with “greater tasks to begin.”
JUNE BREAKFAST History
In 1932, shortly after the establishment of our chapter, the idea of a June Breakfast was conceived. The chapter voted overwhelmingly to have a breakfast in June as a final get-together before summer vacation. During the early years, Alpha Rho Omega Chapter was mainly composed of teachers and social workers, so it was not a surprise that the sorors chose to hold the June Breakfast the Sunday after school was closed for summer vacation. This was the perfect time to celebrate the ending of a successful school year and to collectively celebrate and support the accomplishments of sorors in the chapter. This was also a time to see the new rings of those just married and to look at the photos of new additions to the families. Always on the hearts of sorors were those who said their final pledge and became Ivies Beyond the Wall during the year.
Alpha Rho Omega Chapter’s first June Breakfast was such a success that it was featured in the Michigan Chronicle, the city’s weekly Black newspaper. During those days, when Negro society held a function, reporters who wrote columns placed the event in the paper free of charge. With so much talk being generated, the sorors decided to hold June Breakfast every year and expanded the breakfast to include our regional and national leaders, as well as sorors from other chapters.
Over the years, sorors have gathered at the June Breakfast in the name of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® - Alpha Rho Omega Chapter at Belle Isle for picnics, the Lucy Thurman Y.W.C.A., Devon Gables, Kingsley Inn, the Book Cadillac Hotel and the Westin Hotel.
The occasion is a testament to the devotion, support, encouragement and love we all have for each other.
