Introduction
On January 26, 1997 a tear fell, and then many more followed. I could not stop them if I tried. There were tears in the eyes of my mom and my aunt. Tears of joy. Tears of legacy. Tears that revealed a dream come true. Tears that celebrated the bond of sisterhood. No words, just tears.
To this day, there remain moments that I am at a loss for the exact words when asked to describe the feeling of being a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated- the first black Greek sorority. Happy? Of course. Excited? Sure! Honored?? Definitely!!! But I still search for the precise words to capture the feeling that began 25 years ago for me.
Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® had just turned 89 years old and Alpha Rho Omega (ARO), was preparing to celebrate its 75th anniversary on December 15th. President Schylbea Hopkins and Membership Chairman Altha Steen, lead with dignity and grace; and the chapter was welcoming and encouraging as my line sisters and I tried to find our place in the approximately 400 member Chapter.
Carlyn J. Robinson Centennial PresidentMy service to all mankind began right away when I joined the scholarship committee. I had received a $1000 scholarship award from Omicron Xi Omega Chapter in Montclair, NJ when I graduated from high school, and what better way to begin my journey of giving back. To my amazement, Alpha Rho Omega chapter was giving a full four year scholarship to a deserving young woman graduating from high school. I learned that ARO was one of the early leaders in raising funds to provide scholarships. Armed with that knowledge, I decided to dig deeper through the annals of chapter history.
The legacy of service for my chapter began in 1922 when seven women came together in Detroit to further the progress of “educated women dedicated to family values and high scholastic standards and promote the bonds of friendship beyond geographical limits of any city or state.” The Charter Members of the newly formed Xi Chapter (later renamed Alpha Rho Omega) aligned their focus closely with those of the founding members. Beulah Tyrell (Whitby), already a force to be reckoned with in the city of Detroit, was elected as President. She seamlessly maneuvered the call of duty to the organization and the occupation of social work.
to the next 100
Under President Whitby’s administration, the Scholarship Committee was organized during the 1923 – 1924 calendar years. After fundraising for a few years, the first scholarship was presented in 1927. To date Alpha Rho Omega has distributed over $1 million in scholarship monies.
As the years progressed, I grew more and more interested in the inner workings of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® and eagerly looked forward to Regional Conferences, Boules, and Leadership Seminars. How amazing it was to meet members from all over the world coming together to do the work of AKA. During casual introductions our chapter’s name often received an “OH, Alpha Rho Omega!!!” A knowing nod, a smile, and respect. This chapter was pretty amazing, and it began with the Legacy of Supreme Leadership of Mrs. Beulah Tyrell (Whitby).
Serving as president of Xi Chapter from 1922 to 1926 and again from 1932 to 1933- when the name officially changed to Alpha Rho Omega Chapter, she became the 4th Great Lakes Regional Director from 1934 to 1936 and then rose to supreme leadership as Second, then First Vice President to finally serve as the 11th National President from 1942 to 1946. She paved the way for four more Regional Directors to be elected from Alpha Rho Omega Chapter. Mrs. Whitby created a path where one did not exist for the members of Alpha Rho Omega Chapter. She unapologetically advocated for the rights of the citizens of Detroit and was a role model for women locally and nationally.
It’s been 25 years and I am a Silver Star looking back on all that Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated®, Alpha Rho Omega Chapter has given to me and I still find myself at a loss for words. We are 702 members strong, standing on the shoulders of African American women who were “first” in their families to go to college, “first” in their chosen careers field, “first” to achieve milestones. We are women who fought for civil rights and continue to fight for voting rights. From youth to senior programs, from food drives to clothing drives, from nutritional health to mental wellness, we are in the community making a difference. For 100 years we have been dedicated to being supreme in service to all mankind.
I am thankful for our former presidents who shaped our chapter with determination and precision. I thank our members who selflessly give of their time and energy to meet the needs of the community. I thank each of you for the privilege of your time to share in our centennial celebration at the “Gala of The Century.”
From December 15, 1922, spanning all of the members of Alpha Rho Omega Chapter- the legacy of Supreme Service continues…to the next 100!

Greetings,
It gives me great pleasure to congratulate the Alpha Rho Omega chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated on 100 years of providing service in the Metropolitan Detroit community. Through the years, we have engaged in programs, activities and events which promote education, health, career development and financial literacy, just to name a few. We have supported the youth, the senior citizens, the community organizations and local businesses.
We have had phenomenal leadership over the past 100 years with membership increasing from seven in 1922 to over 700 members in 2022; this is evidence of the success of this chapter. One of our greatest achievements has been the historical purchase of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Foundation of Detroit building. This is a first in the city of Detroit for Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated and has afforded the opportunity to open our doors to many of the community organizations and programs we support.
As we celebrate our place in history, let us not forget those who have passed on who were very instrumental in our development as leaders in the community. We must honor their vision and their commitment as we continue to build upon their achievements.
As we celebrate the past and renew our efforts to make a difference in the future and let us always be mindful of providing service to all mankind. Looking forward to the next 100 years.
With love, Schylbea Jean Hopkins

Alpha Rho Omega Herstory
CHARTER MEMBERSCaptured a Vision Fare
Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated®
Alpha Rho Omega Chapter
HERSTORY Through the years!
The cold winds blowing through the campus of Howard University on January 15, 1908, could not diminish the warmth in the hearts of Anna Easter Brown, Beulah Elizabeth Burke, Lillie Burke, Margaret Flagg, Ethel Hedgemon, Marjorie Hill, Lavinia Norman, Lucy Diggs Slowe, and Marie Woolfolk. Their vision of an organization dedicated to cultural enrichment, scholarship, leadership, high ethical and moral values, racial uplift, and interest in college life after graduation had come to fruition.
With permission from the administration of Howard University, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority became the first African-American Greek letter organization for college-educated women in the United States. Affectionately referred to as “The Founders,” these nine women, who were privileged to the extent that circumstances allowed them to seek and obtain higher education, had planted the seeds for a sorority that today in 2022 claims 325,000 initiated members and 1,061 graduate and undergraduate chapters throughout the United States and eleven countries.
Now let’s take a trip back to December 15, 1922. Despite a record snowfall of 10 inches in the city of Detroit two days earlier, even the weather could not discourage the seven (7) young women who had successfully applied to establish the first chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated in the state
The Charter Members of the Xi Chapter were:
Beulah Tyrrell
A native of Lynchburg, Virginia and graduate of Oberlin College
Lorainetta Henderson
Born in Detroit, Michigan and graduate of the Detroit Conservatory of Music
Hazel Lyman
Originally from Pensacola, Florida and graduate of Fisk University
Edna Dale
Born in Montgomery, Alabama and graduate of Detroit City College
Mary Cassandra Scott
Born and raised in Columbiana, Alabama and graduate of Fisk University
Nellie Watts
Born in Atlanta, Georgia and graduate of Atlanta University
Alice Boyd Burton
A native of Natchez, Mississippi and graduate of Fisk University
of Michigan. Having paid the initiation fee of $2.00, they gathered at the home of Dr. and Mrs. Frank Raiford to receive Miss L. Pearl Mitchell from Kalamazoo, Michigan, who was sent to organize and initiate the members of the new Xi Chapter.
These seven accomplished, cultured, and educated women despite the hardships inflicted by segregation, prejudice, and an economic depression left their mark on the Detroit community in many different ways.
From 1922 until 1930, the Xi Chapter accepted graduates and undergraduates as members, with the expectation that once Detroit City College was accredited, a chapter for undergraduates would be established on the campus of an accredited college/university. In 1930, Detroit City College (now Wayne State University) received its anticipated accreditation and Alpha Rho Omega Chapter received its designation as a graduate chapter. The year 1936 marked the chartering of the Beta Mu Chapter on the campus of Wayne University and in 1974, the Theta Tau Chapter was chartered on the campus of the University of Detroit – Marygrove with the assistance of the Alpha Rho Omega Chapter. The Xi Chapter remained a Detroit citywide Chapter for undergraduates until 1949 when its charter was transferred to Michigan Normal Teachers College, now known as Eastern Michigan University.
As the beneficiary of the vision, leadership, and commitment of the sorority’s founders, our charter members embraced the mission of encouraging and cultivating high scholastic and ethical standards among college women; and reaching back to others so they might benefit from the progress and success of those privileged to lead. These women led by example and they live on in the hearts of Alpha Rho Omega women as shining examples of what we can and should be in providing service to all mankind. The contribution of the Alpha Rho Omega Chapter in all areas of community life has been singularly outstanding. Members have given and continue to give countless hours of volunteer work in the name of
Over the past 100 years, forty-two (42) women have accepted the call to leadership as presidents of the Alpha Rho Omega Chapter. They have coordinated their efforts with those of our national board of directors, impacting the larger Detroit Community, and establishing partnerships with multiple organizations to address the needs of our citizens and to channel the energy of our children into positive and productive areas. Our reach has grown, with Alpha Rho Omega Chapter currently having more than seven hundred (700) members. As our numbers have expanded so has the breadth of our programs, speaking to the history that started in Detroit in 1922.
We take special pride in our Alpha Rho Omega Chapter members who have been called to higher levels of Alpha Kappa Alpha Service, on an international level as members of the sorority’s Directorate, or board of directors. These dynamic women were Beulah Tyrell Whitby, who served as International President, First Vice President, Second Vice President, and Great Lakes Regional Director. Alpha Rho Omega has had four additional members serve as Great Lakes Regional Director including Irene A. Graves, Fanette
B. Norris, Thelma Hollis, and Schylbea Jean Hopkins. Rosalind Griffin served as Second International Vice President and International Secretary. Laura Kate Campbell served as International Secretary and was also the Editor-in-Chief of the Sorority’s National Publication, The Ivy Leaf Magazine.
Throughout the 100 years of service, Alpha Rho Omega sought to uplift the African American community. With a strong focus on education, the chapter’s first scholarship was awarded in 1927, leading to a distribution of more than $1Million in scholarships over the decades. Grant funding was used to provide meals and services for senior citizens of Detroit. Leadership and literacy programs were established for youth as well as a playground built where there were no recreational facilities. The Youth Fashions for Freedom program, established more than 60 years ago, entered into a collaborative relationship with the Detroit NAACP; fundraising together for the first 18 years resulted in $350,000 and it has only grown since then.
The Alpha Rho Omega Chapter continued to lead by example. In 1987 the members invested in the city of Detroit with the purchase of what became the Alpha Kappa Alpha Foundation of Detroit Building. Today, the Alpha Kappa Alpha Foundation of Detroit is a 501(c)3 non-profit, which serves the community through a variety of programs and collaborations such as AKATeens, AKA/NAACP Youth Fashions for Freedom, Detroit Urban League, MOTTEP Life Walk, Detroit Cultural Center Noel Night, Ronald McDonald House, Meals on Wheels, Foundation Scholarships, Selected Citizens, Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure and the United Negro College Fund, to name a few.
While we take pride in these and countless other accomplishments, our real treasure has been in the active participation and dedication of the many members who have kept the light of the Alpha Rho Omega shining so brilliantly aloft.
Today the Alpha Rho Omega Chapter celebrates 100 years of “service to all mankind.” We take pride in the services and accomplishments, individually and collectively as Alpha Kappa Alpha women, and remain committed to the history nurtured in our hearts as we look ahead to the Alpha Rho Omega Chapter’s impact on the next century. It is this love that sustains us as a chapter and holds the promise that the next 100 years will be filled with “greater tasks to begin.”
