Programme 2019/2020
Academic Development through the British Education System: iGCSEs and A Levels
Our programme allows for individually tailored academic pathways, which students can follow as they discover and develop their academic interests and strengths. The pre-university model that shapes our curricula encourages the development of independent learning, building up towards A Level qualifications in Years 12 and 13. A Levels were created by universities and for universities. They allow a free choice of subjects and depth of study that gives a solid preparation for higher education, certifying students’ interests and their ability to pursue academic studies. A Levels also constitute a unique opportunity to lay an extensive and in-depth interdisciplinary foundation for university study. The flexibility of choice at A Level is wonderfully liberating for students in academic terms but also a serious responsibility. A Level subjects must be well chosen, and students need to be prepared for them in order to maximise their learning possibilities. For this reason, we have carefully crafted our programmes for Years 10 and 11, combining Akademeia Assessed Courses with subjects that fulfil iGCSE specifications. All students follow Core Subjects that incorporate iGCSE standards but go beyond them to prepare them for A Level.

Monitoring pupil progress and assessment An integral part of the curriculum is measuring students progress through the use of a variety of assessment techniques:
Individualised reports for each subject Each term, each pupil receives a qualitative report outlining the material covered during class, progress made by the pupil since the previous report, the pupil’s attitude and level of engagement with the subject, and any recommendations the teacher has. These reports are in turn shared with the pupils and their parents.
End-of-Term examination sessions Teachers do not issue grades at Akademeia High School, instead a transcript for a given term contains the results of all the End-of-Term exams conducted that year. Pupils are presented with an individualised transcript statistical analysis of their results shortly after the exam session.
One-to-one meetings with mentors Systematically over the course of the school year, pupils have several interactions with their mentors and also with the headmaster. The aims of these sessions are to not only discuss academic progress based on pupils’ reports and exam session results, but also to evaluate how the pupil is coping with their studies and schoolwork and to indicate the future possibilities.
