WHY WE DO WHAT WE DO The Yellow Box is the brainchild of Ruchika Sharma and Arpit Srivastav, who believe that despite the dense art culture prevalent in Baroda, there is very little that is known regarding the same to many and even little that is done to reach out to people. The idea of The Yellow Box was conceived over innumerable cups of coffee at places unheard of in Baroda and it was hence decided that The Yellow Box, along with covering the local aer scene, would also aim to cover places and events that are exclusive to Baroda and which the Barodians ought to know of. As in known, yellow is the color for new ideas and since a lot of creative thinking is commonly labeled as out of the box, we arrived at the name, The Yellow Box to validate our purpose. In order to make the magazine more reader friendly and to knit together the creative community of the city, The Yellow Box also incorporates space for the readers to share opinions, ideas and opportunities. The Yellow Box is a coffee table magazine that will be published every two months. It will also be available at book stores and cafes near you to maximize its reach. We hope you have as much fun reading it as we had while compiling.

FASHION

AYHUS Ayushi Jhaveri Shah

“I love to style people and put things together for them and always add my element to it.” The idea of fashion stylist & designer Ayushi, AYHUS began as an expression of personal style. The label aims at tapping into the market for edgy everyday clothing. It’s all about you dressing up and getting a feel of perfectly fitted clothing which makes you feel modern, stylish or the way you want to feel. What gave rise to the idea of becoming a designer? I’ve always been fascinated by the idea of design and color, be it in graphics, fashion or home decor. Being a girl, I was intrigued by what people wore and how they dressed. As I grew older, I followed international fashion magazines and read a lot about them. By the time I was in middle school, I was pretty confident and clear about my career. “It’s important to follow your heart and believe in yourself”. How did you train yourself as a designer? Nobody can teach you design. It is very subjective and depends on how you express it. But at the same time exposure enlarges your perspective and gives you a whole lot of experience and ideas from other creative people. After completing my undergrad degree in Knitwear Design from NIFT (National Institute of Fashion Technology), I started working as a fashion stylist in Mumbai and learnt about the fashion industry and trust me , as glamorous as it sounds only hard work will take you to places.

4

FASHION What drives your work ethics and what keeps you motivated? People who wear their personality keep me going. One must realize that every body is different and clothes play an important role in expressing that. I love to style people and put things together for them & always add my element to it and give them something on the same lines yet something totally different. When clients trust my design sense, I’m motivated! They’re scared of experimenting as they haven’t seen anything like that in the market , but I’m trying to change that. What type/style of clothes do you design? Initially I started with casual clothing for women which ranges from Tops, Skirts, Dresses, Pants, Shorts. Everything customized to your style. I’ve young girls who want dresses designed for their birthdays or pool parties. This makes me happy as I feel free to suggest them with styling tips on how to wear each outfit. I’ve started designing contemporary wear too, but I can design anything you want from wedding gowns to a men suit.

Do you own a brand? If yes, how did it come into existence? I started my clothing line - “Ayhus”, on my website - www.ayhus.com which caters to a huge audience world wide. Apart from that I do a lot of customized clothing for men and women. I make something that only you have in your wardrobe and no one else does. More like one of a kind and no repetition.

MUSIC

OUTRO Hindi Rock Band

“We all belong to different fields, and stay busy with our routine work schedules, but our music is what binds us and brings us together.

OUTRO is a four piece Hindi rock band, famous for performing classic retro songs by legends like Kishore Kumar and RD Burman in their own rock band style. Outro is one of the best bands in Gujarat and has performed in various shows, winning more than ten battle of bands across the state. 6

MUSIC

L to R: Jay Vyas, Aariz Saiyed, Zahir Abbas Vohra, Siddharth Shastri

What drove you to create OUTRO and what made you choose the name? We wanted to create our own kind of music & started creating our own versions of classic retro Bollywood songs which kept us content as musicians as we were creating something of our own which would help us attract the audience since the reworked songs were famous retro songs. People would remember us for the Outro of our performance which means “the end of a performance”. Hence the name OUTRO, since we leave our audience surprised and influenced by the end of our performance. When and how was OUTRO formed and what inspired its formation? We all had our own band’s earlier which got disbanded due to varied reasons and were searching for a band to join in. Back in 2012 Jay Vyas brought us together for a small performance in RCA Music Academy. It was a Kishore Kumar night and covered his songs in our own style. People were impressed by the blend of rock music with Kishore Kumar. This is when we started jamming together & covering more retro songs. What genre does OUTRO perform and do you play different genres too? The band is basically known as a Hindi Rock band, but we keep experimenting newer material every time and do not bound ourselves to just Hindi songs. We also started covering different genres such as heavy rock,

progressive as well as reggae and are looking forward to present whatever we love to as musicians.

“The chemistry has evolved so well that we have also started improvising our performance on stage, which not just surprises the audience but even ourselves as musicians.” What can you tell us about the instruments used in your band? Our band is basically a four piece band which comprises of drums, lead guitar, bass guitar and vocals. But in some of our shows, the songs require other instruments as well. We’ve also performed with percussion, backup vocals, violin and keyboard. How has your music evolved since OUTRO first began playing together? Outro has evolved from a basic Hindi band to a band that can perform a Hindi/English song in a hard rock style as well as in reggae style. The chemistry has evolved so well that we have also started improvising our performance on stage, which not just surprises the audience but even ourselves as musicians.

7

MUSIC How important and frequent are the rehearsals and has OUTRO ever performed spontaneously? For any musician or band, practice is what makes you better. The more you jam with your band the more you know about the potential of your band. Your practice and synergy is what makes the band better with every performance. Outro has performed spontaneously without flaws many a times since all the band members are busy with their own life schedules and we hardly get time to jam together and this is possible only because we do our homework and understand each other as a band. How does OUTRO balance music and other obligations? We all belong to different fields, and stay busy with our routine work schedules, but our music is what binds us and brings us together. We make sure to meet and jam whenever we can spare time. We keep looking for opportunities and platforms that brings us together again. If you love what you do, you’ll manage everything to live it! events. What has been the biggest challenge OUTRO has faced and how did the band overcome it? As a band in Gujarat, one common problem we have always faced is the Sound. A band’s performance depends majorly on how its sound is balanced. But with time and experience we have learned to manage and balance our sound as per the system available. However the band still creates raw music and is now moving towards the phase 2 where we will be using more processing equipment to amplify our sound and find a newer kind of music for OUTRO. Do you have any upcoming shows lined up? For now we don’t have any public shows lined up, however the band members keep doing private shows across the state.

TRAVEL

DON’T BE A TOURIST,

BE A TRAVELER

Darpan Tarwani An architect by profession, travelling has always made Darpan feel alive. “Experiencing the places in Himachal, was one of the most lively things that happened to me as a traveler” says Darpan Tarwani. The first stop being Kasol, a beautiful place known for its scenic beauty and surrounded by lush mountains, Darpan says, Kasol has become an attraction for tourists and is highly commercialized, so to explore the sense of peace and nature around, we decided to visit the villages situated on the top of the beautiful mountains. Nevertheless, the experience of the snowed up hills and the scenery through the valleys was majestic! The next stop was the village of Tosh, located on the slopes of a mountain. The snow capped mountains high above and the waterfall below made the long and tedious journey to Tosh worthwhile. Speaking about the experience of Tosh, the battle fought there was to not use our vehicles and trek to the hotel, which was situated right at the top of the village and the view from the peak was astonishing, something that was indescribable. Khirganga is one of the most refreshing treks that one can go on! The trek is pleasant and offers some exhilarating views. After trekking for roughly 8 hours, we reached on the top and the view was mesmerizing. I had never experienced to get a chance to see the unseen beauty in the sky and witness the galaxy. I would suggest to those who love to travel and explore the world beyond, to visit Khirganga to behold real peace.

WOMEN EMPOWERMENT

WE CAN DO IT!

“With proper dedication and devotion you can achieve anything you want and nothing is impossible, all you need to do is work hard Baroda” Bindiya Shah Bindiya Shah, a self reliant lady and the Managing Director of Cubes Construction. A strong woman and a philanthropist, believes in providing the best education to all the children of the laborers working under her projects with excellent teachers and continues to help them throughout the process. She has also opened up a clinic where people are treated for free. From feeding the poor to helping women and making them capable of getting a job, she is involved in all of it. She makes sure that everything falls in place! How do you manage your family along with work? I give my 100% in all the work I do, be it for my family or towards my work commitments. I always make sure that I fulfill all my duties as a mother, wife and daughter-in-law, and also ensure that my family is never overlooked due to my work and responsibilities. I am a Workaholic! I have improved my performances through meditation and devoting myself to work.”

22

Bindiya Shah Tell us more about your projects and experiences The bus depot was one of the projects where it was possible to create a design and to use materials that were never used much before, because I have traveled and seen so many beautiful buildings around the world, which helped me to build something like the bus depot. When Mr.Narendra Modi inaugurated the depot and said, “For the ordinary man, this is an airport for buses”. Even though the project was completed we knew our responsibilities weren’t. The most important part was the maintenance of the project in terms of cleanliness. Though it has been a year and a half, the bus depot is still ensured with proper cleanliness and still seems like a newly constructed project. Also that, their future projects aim at constructing one more bus depot in Ahmedabad.

“I give my 100% in all the work I do, be it for my family or towards my work commitments.” In the end, she passes on a message to Baroda, “With proper dedication and devotion you can achieve anything you want and nothing is impossible, all you need to do is work hard Baroda!”

SOCIAL WORK

Handmade Hope! Rushabh Gandhi

“We build a platform for craftsmen who are skilled to create artistic souvenirs and act as a connecting link between them and the market.” Never in his wildest dreams he thought he would promote self-sustainable employment for the underprivileged. A man whose road trip to Bhutan inspired him to be who he is now! Rushabh Gandhi, a commerce graduate who completed his masters in Journalism, worked as a volunteer with “Yuva Unstoppable”, and thereafter came up with the idea of “Handmade Hope”, an organization forged for the community to elate the underprivileged with an aim to create a hope and make environment friendly handmade bags. “We build a platform for craftsmen who are skilled to create artistic souvenirs and act as a connecting link between them and the market.”

24

SOCIAL WORK

After completing his masters, Rushabh got an opportunity to work for our former president, Late Dr. A.P.J Abdul Kalam, for two years, where he learnt that the thing that matters in life is all about Simplicity and Generosity. His road trip to Bhutan stimulated the need in him, to create something which worked on the principle of self satisfaction and happiness. “Handmade Hope” is built on this principle and aims to achieve the happiness quotient and drives the mental quotient down. While speaking to TYB he said, “Our base policy is to grow organically and we are not future based, because what we believe is that if you stress yourself with targets, you will end up spending on your deteriorating health.” Handmade Hope is a self running model, which works freely on its own, beyond the barriers of management issues. Rushabh generates employment in semi rural areas of Vadodara, where people who are in need of employment, are trained to make paper bags and are supplied with raw materials to make them. Completing more than 10 proud years for the betterment of society, Rushabh has definitely struck an extraordinary and different side of impresario.
