Is the subject given to us as a part of our semester two- Studio one project. We have to come up with any graphic design solution on the existing problems on water for this project, which is to be completed in 6 weeks. In the month of January, I visited Nalsarovar, a 120 sq.km. bird santuary about 64 kms away from ahmedabad and experienced a lot of problems in the journey as well as in the way finding in and around nal sarovar. So I decided to take these issues as my Studio 1 project to make the journey for other people exciting and worthwhile.
project proposal A Guide to Nalsarovar
introduction Nal sarovar Bird Sanctuary, primarily comprising of a spectacular natural lake with shallow waters and muddy lagoons, dotted by 360 islets and ambient marshes, is situated about 64 km to the West of Ahmedabad near Sanand Village, in the Gujarat state of India. The lake measures 120.82 km, attracts over 250 species of birds in the winter, and harbours a variety of flora and fauna. These birds travel tiring lengths from Central Asia, Europe and Siberia to escape from severe cold of harsh winter there. Migratory birds start arriving here in October and stay till April. Their population reaches its peak in mid winter. The sanctuary has about 250 bird species, which include greater and lesser flamingoes, pelicans, ducks & geese, rails, coots, cranes, cormorants, herons, egrets, storks, ibises, spoonbills, teals, sarus cranes, moorhens and waders etc. In addition to migratory birds, many resident as well as local migratory birds also visit this place. The 1994 census records 1.16 lakh birds, while the 1996 census counted 1.41 lakh birds. in 1998, about 78 species of birds were observed, while in 2000 about 90 species of water fowls were recorded at nal sarovar. The sanctuary area has 48 species of algae and 72 species of flowering plants. The common aquatic plants are Cyperus sp., Scirpus sp., Typha ungustata, Eleocharis palustris, Ruppia, Potamogeton, Vallisnaria, Naias, Chara etc. On southern or southwestern fringes, small herds of wild ass can be seen. Mongoose, jungle cat, Indian fox, jackal, wolf and hyena are also there. There are 360 islets in the lake. Most of them lie exposed when the water level is low. The lake gets filled with water that drains from the adjoining Surendranagar and Ahmedabad districts in the monsoon. With this fresh water inflow, brackishness in the lake is reduced considerably. This lake and the wetlands around it were declared a bird sanctuary in April’ 1969. The state forest department is pushing for a ramsar site status for the nal sarovar wetlands.
initial experience • Got lost on the way to nal sarovar due to inappropriate signages on the road. • Stalked by local guides for the ferry. • No appropriate signage system for the locations in nal sarovar. • No signage for toilets and restaurants. • No map of the nal sarovar on the banks of the marshland. • Ditched by the ferry owner in the middle of the ride, asking for more money and promising to show exotic locations. • Couldn’t identify birds as not a routine bird watcher and couldn’t understand the local lingo of the ferry driver. • Disappointed with the exotic locations as they were not marked with any signage system. • No souvenir shop or a book store to sell merchandise for the complete nal sarovar experience.

phase one Information Collection
archiving, dip study and brainstorming In this time of 6 weeks, the first week was spent by us doing massive brainstorming on water and archiving of past diploma as well as classroom projects done by NID graphic design graduates and post graduates. The archiving helped us to look at the various graphic design mediums and the approach of the students towards the issues.

first visit
phase one Information Collection
initial visit to nalsarovar. On 12th march 2011, I decided to go to nalsarovar with two of my friends, Matthew Jacob and Anish Cherian for carrying out research and also confirming whether the design problems I had witnessed earlier were really valid. We started out at 6.30 am and went for maska bun for our breakfast. Kalpesh the maska bun stall owner explained us the route to our destination and warned us about the exorbitant rate the ferry drivers charged. He also told us to pack food before going, as there were no food stalls and the only food available there was in small shanties which was unhygienic. After packing muska buns for the trip, we set out for Nalsarovar. The best time to reach Nalsarovar is before sunrise in the moth of December to February, but we were late in time as well as in the season. It took us exactly 1 and a half hour to reach Nalsarovar, but thanks to Kalpesh’s guide we reached the destination easily, as there weren’t any route markers going towards Nalsarovar. We had to buy a ticket of Rs. 25/- at the gate of the sanctuary and only then were we allowed inside. The boating area is 2 kms from the gate. As soon as we reached the boating area, we were stormed by a gang of ferry drivers, convincing us to take their ferry for sightseeing. This was total chaos as yet again like the previous time, there were abuses, remarks and unfriendly conversation between them to convince us. Then after much nagging we decided to take the guy giving the lowest bid of Rs. 50/-. As we were walking towards the ferry, he told us that if we wanted to take the full round, then we had to pay more than the amount finalized. He promised us to show 5 different points and also told us that he would take us really close to the birds. We bargained about the rates and it was finalized that the boat ride would cost us Rs. 350/for 5 points. This times journey was much better than last time, as we could see more birds. The entire boat ride lasted for 3 hours and we were shown points like “Naldamayanti ki samadhi ,” Bird breeding grounds, observation post, etc. but the ride was pretty misleading as the driver only spoke Gujarati and we had a lot of problem understanding him. After coming back from the ride, we were again stormed by the ferry drivers to book them for food, as they had small shanties to serve fish, rich and vegetables. After some research work and dynamic photography, we headed back to home.
problems observed • No appropriate road direction on the way to Nal sarovar • Some parts of the internal road were under construction. • A ruined map • No order at the ferry area • No signage for toilets and restaurants. • No ambience • No Security • No Souvenir shop • Tourist can’t understand the language of the ferry drivers • No publication or information about Nal sarovar at the site

second visit to nalsarovar. On 17th march 2011, I visited Nal sarovar again, after a telephonic conversation with Mr. R. L. Jalandre on 16th march 2011. Mr. Jalandre is the Regional Forest officer (R.F.O.) of Nal Sarovar and his office in Nal Sarovar. The head office is at Sanand which is 39kms away from Nal Sarovar towards Ahmedabad. A meeting was scheduled between us at 10 am on the 17th. When I reach Nal Sarovar that morning, i was surprised to find out that Mr. Jalandre had gone of to Ahmedabad for an emergency meeting. But he had made provisions for me and had appointed Mr. R. M. Thakur to answer my queries. Mr. R. M. Thakur is a Forester of Nal Sarovar. He is a very helpful man, who was answering each and every question with much enthusiasm. He gave me various publication on Nal Sarovar, along with a government census on the birds of Nal Sarovar. I also had some questions which he answered by giving day to day life examples and eplained me the Core problems in Nal Sarovar and how the government is planning to get rid of the problems.
1
questions & answers • What is the best season to visit Nalsarovar? - The best season is winter from December to February, when the migratory birds travel. The main attraction during that times are the Flamingos • What is the best time to vistit usually ? - 6.30 am just as the sun is rising and after 4.00 pm. • When does the first ferry ride start? - The first ferry ride, starts at 6.30 am. • What type of people visit? -The santuary is visited by people who are looking of for a holiday outing for having fun, where seeing birds is an added attraction. Yes, bird watchers also visit, but not as much as these other people. If you see, 25 % are bird watchers who only concentarted on serious bird watching, 25% are people who just come here for having fun and nothing else. Bird watching not of any importance to these people and 50% people come to see birds, and also enjoy the experience. • Do International tourists visit? - Yes, quite a lot. They are mostly bird watchers and photographers. • How often do you go to check the Area ? - Everday. Once in the morning and once in the evening. We have 2 boats especially assigned for mrning and evening patroling which keep a check of the sanctuary and prevent people from hunting of birds. • Any added feature that the government is planning to provide? - The Government is planning to renovate the existing interpretation centre. The main problem over here is the electricity, that the government has almost solved by providing new connections to the interprtation building. The government is also going to demolish the existing public toilets and construct new toilets ith proper provisions of water and hygiene. The government is right now renovation the “Flamingo” a guest house for the class 1 and class 2 officers and its is of the foremost priority.
• Emergency contact number - There isn’t any emergency contact number, as the sanctuary is safe. • Hospital in the nearby area? - There is a hosital in 39kms away, which is the nearest hospital around. • A hospital 39kms away, what if there is a mishap? - The worst mishap can only be that a person drowns, but the water here is only 4ft deep, so there is no chance of drowning as you can touch the bottom. • Attractions other than bird watching ? - The Interpretation centre is one of the attractions, which is proposed to be reopened in April. Other attration are being worked out. • What would you say about the ferry drivers, who stalk and nag the tourists and after that increase rates for the ride? - Well, if you see, the real problem is of the people coming here. They come here for fun and are pretty careless about their money. The Rate card is at the main entrance, but noone see it. Now, these ferry drivers are very poor people, they come from the nearby slums. They are only trying to earn a living and on top of that, there is a hugh competition. So as the tourist who don’t see the rate card, are told more rates and the bargained. The tourist also most of the time dont care as they try to increases their boat ride by giving more money than the actual rate. So in short, its due to the neglegence of the tourist, the ferry drivers have turned out to be like this. • Is there an identiy card for the Ferry drivers? - All ferry drivers have to carry an Identity card, given to them by the government. This card is obtained only when these ferry drivers pay a sum of Rs. 100/- and this card is valid as per the season. • Is the some history behind the points in Nal Sarovar? - The are no points in Nal Sarovar. The ride is not according to the number of points, but the hours you take the ride. • If on an hourly basis, is there a fixed route? - Yes, there is a fixed route... it given in the brochure.
• Is there any housing or camping facility or the tourists? - No, not yet, but we are planning provisions. • Is there any sort of bird resque or breeding? - There is a bird resque team, who help out injured birds and keep them in a closure and take care of them. After they are healthy, they are let out in to the wild. • What according to you should be the main priority of the government? - The government should first and foremost renovate the border of Nal Sarovar and also provide a motorable route around the border. This will help us to keep a better watch on the bird sanctuary and ensure the well being of the birds. The government should also look after the water problems, as the water here is fresh during the monsoons and is salty towards the summers. This creates ploblems as being salty, it can’t be used.

visit to cee. About CEE - Centre for Environment Education, CEE was created in recognition of the importance of environmental education in India’s overall environment and development strategy. The result of a unique partnership between government and a non-governmental institution, CEE was established as a Centre of Excellence in 1984, supported by the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF), Government of India. CEE has inherited the rich multi-disciplinary resource base and varied experience of Nehru Foundation for Development, its parent organisation, which has been promoting educational efforts since 1966 in the areas of science, nature study, health, development, and environment. CEE’s work in Gujarat initiated way before 1984 since its headquarters is located at Ahmedabad. At the time it began its activities, CEE was perhaps the only organization actively engaged in environmental education in the country. The focus of CEE’s work in the state has been promoting environment education leading to environmental action. As I enquired, I noticed that the CEE had worked for Nalsarovar, about 10 years ago. They were one of the organization, who pitched for the construction of the interpretation centre, but they did not win the pitch. They had created a model of the centre which had rooms like conference area, Audio Video room and exhibition room.
1 case study one : Publication done at CEE. Cee also pitched for a brochure design for Narovar. This however did not get selected. This Brochure was only designed in Gujarati. • The was an extensive use of illustrations and imagery. The images were not well organied and no scenario was built. • The text is too much in my opinion, the audience would be ore interested in seeing the imagery rather than reading the brochure. • Grahics, illlustrations and pictures were all used together. •The images colud have been larger to accompany the copy matter.
2 • A cream colour background was used for no significance, • Being a brochure only made in gujarati, other people found it very hard to read it. • The bird nomenlature proved to be very useful and inspiring for my medium . • Contentwise, this contains almost all the information that is necessary : Information about Nalsarovar, Information on birds, Bird seasons, Timings and rates.

talk with experts
phase one Information Collection
talk with vikram grewal Mr. Bikram Grewal is famous Indian ornithologist and a book publisher. His book ‘Birds of India’ has sold more copies than any other bird book authored by an Indian in the past decade. Mr. Bikram shared a lot of information about birds and types of birds visiting Nal Sarovar. He explained me why birds migrate to Nalsarovar and when they return back.
he also shared some important links: http://wildlife-tales.blogspot.com/2006/12/morning-atnalsarovar-lake.html http://groups.yahoo.com/group/birdsofbombay/message/7691 http://shetlandmisfit.blogspot.com/2010/03/29th-january-2010nal-sarovar.html
talk with adal Tarun had previously given my some contacts to refer and interview for my project. He had asked me to take more opinions of people who are not from NID, to get a better perspective of Nalsarovar. I contacted Adal and had a telephonic interview with her. Adal visits Nal sarovar once or twice a year, from 1997. She said that, previously they used to go there quite a lot, as it was a nice peaceful and a secluded place, where she could be away from her hectic life for a break. But, now a day, she said that due to the rapid development of the area, they don’t go to Nal sarovar much. She said that they previously used to spend a day in Nal sarovar docking on one of the island as a picnic spot, but now they only spend maximum of 3 hours. The government also doesn’t allow people to dock and have picnic spots now. Adal always travels in the morning, where she makes it a point to reach Nal sarovar before 5 am so that she can get most out of the place. She also carries a bird guidebook whenever she goes, which helps her identify the birds, but proves to be very inconvenient for her. She always fixes boat rides before reaching the place as she has a reliable boat driver contact. This helps her not to be stalked by the guides. This gave me a clear picture of the basic needs for a common traveller and gave me some new insights.

visit to indroda
phase one Information Collection
visit to indroda nature education sanctuary - gandhinagar Indroda Dinosaur and Fossil Park is a precious treasure spread over an area of about 400 hectares on either bank of Sabarmati river in Gandhinagar, the capital of Gujarat. It is considered to be the second largest hatchery of dinosaur eggs in the world. Regarded as India’s Jurrasic Park, it is run by the Gujarat Ecological Education and Research Foundation (GEER), and is the only dinosaur museum in the country. The park consists of a zoo, massive skeletons of sea mammals like the blue whale, as well as a vast botanical garden, amphitheatre, interpretation center and camping facilities. It also has a Wilderness Park which is home to innumerable species of birds, reptiles, hundreds of nilgais, langurs and peafowls in its vast forest. Indroda park is a very well organized park with Bilingual signages and an information panel on each animal. It has various information graphic solutions to explain the origins of the dinosaurs at the dinosaur exhibit. The park is also well know for its vast habitat cages for its variety of animals.

existing publications at nalsarovar Some of the publications that Mr. R. M. Thakur gave for references. These publications are free of cost and are given to you at the main ticket booth, only if you ask for them. When asked why do we have to ask for them and not given beforehand, Mr. R. M. Thakur answered that because f the tendency of the people to litter, we avoid giving them to the tourists. The publications are avalable in Gujrati as well as in English. This helped me to think on the fact that a medium is needed so as the issuses littering and pollution are handelled and at the same time the visitor should get the adequte infomation about the bird sanctuary
1
case study two : Publication at Nalsarovar. This publication is given at the entry gate, only if you ask for it. The officials at nalsarovar, do not give this brochure along with the ticket, even if it is free, because they fear that the people would litter the Nalsarovar habitat. • The olour blue was chiefly used in this publication, so as to denote a wetland. • There was hardly any imagery at one side, and it looked as if it was placed there to fill up space. • The designing was very mediocre and appropriate use of visuals to accompany the text was not considered.
• There was only a route map to nalsarovar and the entire brochure was very briefly written. • there was no solid content and nothing interesting in the layout. • There was a small nomenclature of 24 birds visiting Nalsarovar a the back of the brochure. These birds were illustrated.
case study three : Publication at Nalsarovar (Booklet) This publication is also available at Nalsarovar. Mr. R. M. Thakur, in his interview, told me that there was a souviner shop before, where this booklet was available. Now, these booklets are no longer available, as the souveiner shop is discontinued. Though they are planning to release it when the new Interpretation centre is renovated. • This booklet has detailed information about the interpretation center at Nalsarovar. • Its has also got interesting fact about Nalsarovar about its geology and geography and history. • The colour pallete in my opinion is not though about, as the cover being black does not look appropriate to reflect a bird sanctuary. • There are 2 sets of books and each of them have the same content, but are in different languages. Gujarati and English. • This booklet has no information about the birds, which was the main content in the rest of the publications.
case study three : Publication at Nalsarovar This publication is also available at the ticket counter at Nalsarovar. It contains basic introduction to Nalsarovar and maximum information on the boat rides. • Maximum importance on the boat rides, where this could have been incorporated with the previous publication. • The colour palette which was followed was also random. • This publication was very useful, as it shows the boat routes, so the ferry drivers cannot fool you.
• This also had the Ahmedabad to Nalsarovar route map, which was the same as the previous publication. • Also rule of Nalsarovar were printed on this publication and minimal imagery was used.

reworked design brief
phase two Analysis and Synthesis
To develop a set of printed, digital or spatial media, that is primarily informational on the subject of Nalsarovar and specifically on the birds and routes. This material can be experienced and used by either the tourists coming to Ahmedabad or by tourists visiting Nalsarovar primarily amateur birdwatchers, to make their visit, informative and memorable.

topics for content
phase three Design Development
topics After gathering all the information , sorting it out and then analysing the data, I decided to list down all the important topics, which would be necessay for the amateur bird watchers to become more interested in the sanctuary. Also, Language of the brochure would have to be very simple for the masses and the visuals and graphics would be bold and easily relatable.
introduction A brief introduction of Nalsarovar which would highlight its history and some interesting facts.
maps It sholud also have a map to reach Nalsarovar and the Nalsarovar Boat Map so that the guides would not be able to fool the visitors.
seasons Bird migratory seasons which would help the visitors plan their visit according to their interests.
attractions Information on the Interpretation Centre as it is a new attraction at the site.
equipment to carry Things you need the most to make your trip memorable.
do’s and dont’s Things that by doing can make your trip better and by not doing follow the rules and regulations set by the sanctuary.
take home media Poster which will help you locate birds at Nalsarovar and will also be a good poster to take back home
ticket Something that you can take back, which would prevent people from littering in the sanctuary.
visual language style
phase three Design Development
visual language and style The visual language and style should be kept very simple as a variety of crowd visits Nalsarovar. Specific concepts should be taken into consideration.
images and pictures For imagery, I needed simple visuals that communicate the message very easily. These visuals could also be used at the site as signages in a map. Line drawings can be drawn by hand and then vectored with a specific form and then their negative - positive balance could be altered. I do not want to take photographs in the place where there is information as I don’t want the user to get carried away seeing the photography and not reading the matter. However, the poster which wold be at the back would have pictures of birds and their nomenclature.
colour palette The colour palette should be CMYK. The reason that the poster on the other side would be in multicolour as it includes the exact colours of the birds as by seeing them, the visitors would identify the birds.

type decisions After much study, i wanted a typeface, which would be easy for the masses to ready easily. A font which would be readable and legible at a point size of 6 as the matter would be more. So I decided to take baskerville as my seriff typeface and Meta as my sans-seriff typeface. Dropping the seriff typeface is also possible.
dimensions
phase three Design Development
dimensions A project like his would require optimum usage of paper, because of is nature and cost constraints. As it is Government aided it is more challenging. Mazimun Space utilazation within the meduim as a lot of matter has to be accomodated was taken into consideration. Also the size, legibility, readabily and the relevance of the copy matter was considered.
paper Paper decisions consisted of searching for an economic paper, which and would not be flimsy and would print well on offset. Also, a rough off-white colour textured paper is considered.

types of possible design medias I listed down possible media solutions from which I could choose one media to target my approach. before reaching nalsarovar • Posters • Baggage belt at Airports • Street Signages • Print campaign • Escalators • Car graphics
after reaching nalsarovar • Boat stickers • Booklet • Bird almanac • Kits • Installations • Boat graphics • Audio sensory aid
approach one : Booklet with a poster advantages • Simple • More information • Advantage of a poster
This Booklet would be accompanied with a poster. The poster would either be printed at the centre page or be given at the back with an attached envelope. This booklet would be designed in a way that would have the scenarios from the point of departure from Ahmedabad to the arrival at Nalsarovar.
disadvantages • Can become boring • Cliché
approach two : Poster with a kit advantages • Interactive • Reusable • Ambient
This Poster would have all the information about Nalsarovar . The back side would have the bird pictures wih their nomenclature. The Poster would be tied up in the middle and would be accompanied by binoculars and a compass to make it more interesting.
disadvantages • Limited information • Handling problem • Cost problem
approach three : Brochure with a poster advantages • Simple • More information • Advantage of a poster • Scenario building • Can act as a ticket • Ergonomict
This Brochure would have a poster on the backside. This idea was inspired by the previous two approaches. This would be able to have a consistant amount of matter on one side and a poster on the other to prevent paper wastage. The fully folded brochure would be at a size which would easily fit in the front pocket of a t-shirt and while opening the entire media, there would be scenarios on each folds to help you reach and understand Nalsarovar.

maps Maps were designed, for the people coming from ahmedabad. A specific colour palette was used to go well with the off white background. If we look at the positioning of this map, then this would be right on he second fold, so that a pillian rider would be able to guide the driver to Nalsarovar. This map was designed from the aerial view of Nalsarovar, which is mentioned earlier.
Also, one more map was designed to show the boat routes at Nalsarovar. The colour palette for the route was taken to be from “VIBGYOR, becausepeople would easily make the difference between the colours and the map woul be easier to read. Also I added an extra colour black to denoted the shortest route, as it was the route which was most opted for by the visitors.

About
A vast natural lake, marshy lands, muddy lagoons and 360 islets together form The Nalsarovar Bird Sanctuary, the largest wetland bird sanctuary in Gujarat and also one of the largest in India. Located around 64 kms to the west of Ahmedabad, near the Sanand Village in Gujarat, India, this sanctuary is globally known for the vast variety of flora and fauna it nurtures. Scientific evidence found in the region suggests that The Nalsarovar was part of a sea channel that connected the Gulf of Kutch and the Gulf of Khambhat. But around 7000 years ago, it assumed its present day forms and features and became a closed basin. The lake and the wetlands around it were declared a bird sanctuary in April’ 1969. The lake spread over 120.82 km², and the reed beds and marshlands provide an ideal habitat for over 250 species of birds in winter. Migratory birds travel tiring lengths from Central Asia, Europe and Siberia to escape the severe cold during the
winters there. These wetlands are also a home for many indigenous species of birds and animals. A coveted destination for the bird lovers, this sanctuary is home to many rare species of birds as well. The state forest department is pushing for a Ramsar site status for the Nalsarovar wetlands- ”The Ramsar Convention site - Wetland of International importance”
November to February is considered to be the best season to visit as large congregations of migratory birds fill Nalsarovar with their vibrant colours & calls.

February to November is considered to be an off season for migratory birds, but it is the season to watch birds of Indian origin.

The Forest Department of Gujarat, has developed an interactive interpretation centre called ‘The Abhiruchi Kendra’ at the state’s largest wetland bird sanctuary ‘The Nalsarovar’. So far 225 types of birds are recorded in the area, 140 water-birds and 70 migratory birds. Out of these only 25 to 30 are easily observed by the visitors. The interpretation centre has listed almost 30 varieties of birds. Some of the varieties they have focused on are Flamingo, Pelican Egret, Heron, Ducks, Cormorant, Crane etc. The migratory birds, travel distance places of origin, cross section prototype of Nalsarovar’s under water life etc. are exhibited in the centre.

about the brochure
phase four Execution of the Solution
navigation I first thought of this project, after my visit to Nalsarovar. After my survey, I wanted the people who visit Nalsarovar, To have the entire experience of the place. An experience, which would start right at the place where the idea of Nalsarovar would come in their mind. So I decided, that the end deliverable would be targeted right at the root level. Nature enthusiasts, Wildlife photographers, Ornithologists, amateur birdwatchers, etc, can pick this brochure at book stores, nature clubs, nature parks, etc. where people would generate interest in Nalsarovar. The main thought put into this poster is the scenario building where each fold opens up to reveal new information at stages in the journey. A pillion rider can easily fit this brochure in his front jacket pocket, where it will be easily acessable to give the rider directions. The later folds develop curiosity and give fun facts about the place. The brochure is also equiped with a poster which will help amateur bird watchers to have information and also would help beginners, name the birds that they see. A poser would not be thrown away and hence later, it could prove as an advertiing media. The ticket at the back, will be stamped while entering and leaving the sanctuary, which will prevent the visitor to pollute.

phase five Conclusion
• Understanding how research is important to find the right problem and not jump to conclusions. • How people react when you talk to them face to face. • Not to fix on the end deliverable at the start of the project. • Time management is the key factor in a project. • Understanding how to talk to stakeholders, and how to ask proper questions and the proper time • Planning and doing your homework before you go ut to do your research. • How to vectorize images and use it for digital vector illustrations. • How to prepare a print ready artwork.
