All at once.” Chris Rose December 15, 2012 Sorors of the Sensational South Central Region: It is with great excitement and enthusiasm that I invite you to the 81st South Central Regional Conference, my first as your Regional Director. Hosted March 21-24 in New Orleans, Louisiana, this conference promises to exceed expectations with “Jazz and Pizazz!” Conference Chairmen, Sorors Sheryl Rodriguez and Lynn Farris, along with all of the host chapter sorors, are hard at work to ensure your experience is nothing short of sensational. They are poised to welcome you with the warmth, sisterly love, fabulosity and hospitality that Southern Louisiana is known for. During our time in the Crescent City, I hope that you will enjoy the amenities of our beautiful host hotel, the Hilton Riverside; dine at some of New Orleans’ renowned eateries; groove to some smooth jazz and visit the many historical sites New Orleans has to offer. However, we must take care of business first as we expand our sorority knowledge in the plenary sessions, workshops and forums; applaud our newest Diamond, Golden and Silver Sorors; celebrate our Legacies; honor community leaders; award chapters for their stellar Global Leadership Through Timeless Service programing; enjoy performances by our sorors at AKApollo Night and of course enjoy some sisterly fellowship. Our Supreme Basileus, Soror Carolyn House Stewart, has challenged us to accept the mission with a dedicated investment and a bold commitment. So, in true South Central style, we will step up and show out in service with our Youth Summit and donation of 20,000 school supplies to benefit local children with incarcerated parents. Please see the program flyers for additional information. I thank you in advance for what I know will be a sensational show of support! Yes, we’ve heard you loud and clear! We have read and reread the Evaluation Forms and have made some significant changes based upon your valuable input including: • Assigned seating at the Formal Closing Gala; table assignments will be made based upon registration order. Now, don’t fret -- whether your preference is jazz or something with a little more pizazz, every seat is a great seat and you can rest assured knowing that there is one specifically reserved for you. • Award presentations throughout the Conference, so make sure you are at every session to hear your and/or your chapter’s name called to receive the coveted South Central Regional Awards. • An Ecumenical Service open to all sorors and guests who wish to worship together before departing back to our respective homes.

We are excited that you have decided to come to New Orleans, Louisiana, which is affectionately known as “The Big Easy.” We invite you to take it “easy” with sisterhood and service while enjoying one of America's most culturally and historically-rich cities. The Sorors in the Southern Louisiana Cluster have worked selflessly and tirelessly to ensure that your time at the conference is a truly unique melting pot of New Orleans culture and conducive for growth in the first, finest and foremost sorority - Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated. We are excited that you are joining us in New Orleans, Louisiana for a time of reflection, education, sisterly relations, and leadership development. Our conference theme, “Jazz and Pizazz: Leading the Way through Timeless Service,” is a wonderful reflection of the culture of our area with the challenge to encourage all sorors to lead the way in each of their communities through timeless service. My Dearest Sorors of South Central Region: It is with great pleasure and excitement that I extend a welcome to the 81st South Central Regional Conference, located in New Orleans, Louisiana, or as we say in Southwest Louisiana “Bonjoure et Bienvenue ‘a La Conference Regionale Centrale du Sud, la Nouvelle-Orleans, 81st.”. As you embrace the conference theme, “Jazz & Pizazz: Leading the Way Through Timeless Service,” remember that South Central Sorors have always worked effortlessly in our mission to extend leadership and to be a presence for style in our communities as well as homemakers. I’d like us to remember that we, as Alpha women, have always stepped in the light of “pizazz” and swayed with the rhythm of “Jazz” to the beat of the first drum as we embark upon new trials and ventures. Do not sit in designated “reserved seating” for delegates, Very Special Guests (VSGs), Diamond/Golden Sorors, the Emergency Medical Team (EMTs) or physically challenged sorors.

All plenary sessions will be held at the Hilton Riverside Hotel. The third floor at the Hilton Riverside Hotel will be the site of Conference Registration. PRE CONFERENCE WORKSHOPS Thursday, March 21, 2013 Graduate Advisors’ Certification – Level I 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. This workshop is for sorors who plan to serve as a Graduate Advisor and Graduate Advisory Committee members and sorors in Leadership positions who have never been certified. Remember to complete and forward the designated Graduate Advisor‘s Certification forms inside of this packet as instructed. Lunch will not be provided, however ample time will be allotted for lunch on your own. Financial Officers’ Certification – Level I 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. This workshop is for current and aspiring chapter financial officers. Registration for this training will be limited to 50 sorors and priority will be given to current chapter financial officers. This one-day, interactive, hands-on certification is designed to assist the graduate chapter‘s Tamiouchos and Pecunious Grammateus with executing their operational responsibilities. Each participant will receive the Financial Officer Certification Manual, an updated copy of the Fiscal Fitness Guide to Chapter Financial Procedures and the course CD. Sorors will be trained in the proper implementation of financial procedures as outlined in the Fiscal Fitness Guide to Chapter Financial Procedures and referenced in several other sorority documents. A creative, learning approach will be used to enhance the core competencies of certification participants. Sorors who successfully complete this training will earn the designation of Certified Chapter Financial Officer. Break: 90 minute break for lunch starting at 11:30 am. Lunch will not be provided. Graduate Advisors’ Exchange 6:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. This workshop is for Graduate Advisors to have a general exchange of ideas, rules and regulations.

WK01 Financial Workshop 101: Leading with Financial Finesse This workshop is a chapter financial operations workshop designed for all chapter financial officers. The content will include internal controls, budgeting, auditing, duties of the financial officer and IRS reporting requirements.

WK02 Timeless Tools: Building a Foundation for Global Service with Our Governing Documents An engaging, interactive workshop, in the style of the popular game show "Jeopardy", designed to assess and build upon your knowledge of the Constitution and Bylaws and Manual of Standard Procedure.

WK03 Undergraduates Rock! Taking G.L.T.T.S. Programs to the Next Level This interactive workshop will provide undergraduate sorors with specific strategies on how to implement the G.L.T.T.S. program initiatives within their chapters. Through discussion, practical steps, and feedback from other undergraduates, the workshop will help sorors learn how to take their programs to the next level of excellence. Learn how to work together as a team, navigate your campus environment, and create exceptional programs. Undergraduate Basilei, Program Chairman and Graduate Advisors are encouraged to attend.

WK04 Sustainability: Achieving Timeless Chapter Operations An interactive workshop focusing on the principles of chapter sustainability. The workshop will introduce a new Standards concept, “The Three Pillars of Sustainability,” how the Individual Soror, the Chapter, and the Sorority must work together for growth and longevity. Review the newly revised “So Now You’re Elected” Manual. Leverage collaborative strategies that will ensure chapter sustainability by preparing our Sorors as future leaders, ensuring that our chapters are relevant, and protecting our legacy of sisterhood and service.

WORKSHOPS AT A GLANCE Saturday, March 23, 2013 SESSION 1 - 8:30 A.M. - 10:00 A.M. WK05 Are you Really active? Joining this sisterhood is a privilege of which we’ve all had the pleasure of being a part. Staying fully invested in your chapter and remaining active after graduation is important for strengthening this sisterhood and retaining lifelong active membership. This workshop will define and provide tips for being financially and academically active, provide tips for being invested in your chapter while being financially and academically active, and the steps for transitioning into a Graduate Chapter.

WK06 Sustaining Sisterhood and Sisterly Relations: What Draws Us Together, What Drives Us Apart This interactive workshop examines the best practices for running meetings effectively and simply with the use of parliamentary procedure. The “soror relationship” offers unparalleled opportunities for closeness and estrangement and the emotional connection between sorors is important in sustaining lifelong active membership. This workshop will provide selected chapters the opportunity to share activities that have made successful impacts on improving soror relationships and enhancing sisterly relations, thus promoting an environment for sustainable membership within their chapter.

WK07 Global Empowerment: Moving from Discussion to Action This workshop will 1) outline the strategy for the mid-term elections in view of the results of the 2012 election, 2) address the new initiative for human trafficking, M.I.N.D. [Merciful Intervention NOW Demands Safety] and 3) a panel of experts will identify legislation, resources and explore how chapters can move into action with this new advocacy campaign.

WK08 Retaining the Records of Alpha Kappa Alpha in a Repository This workshop will introduce Sorors to two contemporary archiving issues: 1) Archiving The Essential Records of Alpha Kappa Alpha – Retention Issues and Strategies; and 2) Case Study: Preservation Repositories of Alpha Kappa Alpha; “Building, Remodeling or Retrofitting Your Archives; Innovative Preservation Storage Solutions.” The workshop will also provide an update on the status of Archiving Alpha Kappa Alpha records at Howard University’s Moorland-Spingarn Research Center. It will close with the presentation of an Oral History sample drawn from the OnLine Unsung Sorors of the Civil Rights Movement Exhibit.

WK09 Website Guidelines and Evaluation Attend this workshop to hear updates of the elements needed to ensure chapter and regional websites are compliant with the website guidelines. Sorors will leave understanding the website evaluation process, the re-evaluation process, and review all forms for website evaluation. Chapters will also leave the workshop with a clear understanding of resources available to ensure a successful evaluation. .

WK10 Timeless History Final Drafts Clinic Your Chapter has completed its history, but will it pass muster as a Timeless History (TH)? The Regional Timeless History team will showcase Chapter works deemed TH ready and recommend measures needed to help other works achieve TH status. Historians, please submit your “edited” manuscript for consideration. Note: Historians email manuscript (by 60 days before conference recommended) to TH Editor’s email address).

WK11 Board Member Responsibilities and Code of Conduct Sorors aspiring to become members of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Directorate need to understand the big picture as it relates to board member responsibilities. The uniqueness of membership on this Board is being able to understand, apply and live the Code of Conduct expected of sitting Board members. You are encouraged to join in the discussion of this workshop to gain clarity and insight.

WK12 THE PROTOCOL BLUEPRINT FOR GLOBAL LEADERSHIP-101 Part 2: Basic Protocol Practices. This workshop provides an overview of the basic protocol practices, principles and procedures of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated. Topics will include Soror Code of Ethics, correct terminology, appropriate titles and introductions, appropriate attire and chapter decorum. All attendees should bring a copy of “The Official Guide to Alpha Kappa Alpha Protocol 2010.”

Sorors will discuss strategies and develop tactics which can be used to gain community support and corporate sponsorships of chapter programs and service projects. So You Want To Run For Office: Electing Leaders for Global Service

The purpose of the workshop is to provide guidelines for the nomination, certification and campaign processes up to Election Day using the document So You Want to Run for Office, November 2012 edition. Detailed instructions are provided, along with a timeline of submission required.

WK17 sister, SISTAH â&#x20AC;&#x153;Sisterhoodâ&#x20AC;? means feeling a sense of kinship and closeness with a group of women and finding ways to sustain this relationship is important for retaining lifelong active membership. This workshop will provide tips for fostering stronger relationships, establishing sisterly protocol, and providing event ideas based on various chapter sizes. Sorors will be able to share their own experiences through group discussion.

WK18 Alpha Kappa Alpha Membership: Back to the Basics Our governing documents serve as the foundation for our operation and policies and the currently approved Membership Intake Process provides the tools for ensuring successful membership intake processes. This workshop will review the basics of the process, including a review of the bylaws regarding memberships, the forms required for the process and responses to frequently asked questions.

WK19 Leveraging PR and Communications Skills through Timeless Strategies This workshop will provide effective strategies on how Sorors can penetrate the media network to help transmit their message. The session will also provide valuable tips on how to form a partnership with the media that will help in their publicity mission at the chapter, cluster and regional levels. This workshop also incorporates strategies on how to maximize social media to achieve PR objectives.

Every soror needs to become better at the process of having those tough love discussions critical to resolving inter-personal conflicts. Whether the conflict is between you and another soror or you are trying to help resolve conflict involving others, this workshop is for you.

Take the time to reflect and refresh your knowledge, hearts, and minds to the important elements of our commitment to our Rituals and our sisterhood.

WK25 Economics and Retirement Planning You worked hard, saved and planned for your retirement and felt you were ready to enjoy the fruits of your labor. Now you are faced with the reality of increased health care cost, the donut hole, supplemental Medicare coverage and so much more. Representatives from AARP and AKA will discuss these realities and offer options that can ease the strain on your stretched budgets.

REGISTRATION INSTRUCTIONS THERE WILL BE NO ONSITE REGISTRATION Early registration is on or before February 8, 2013. Late registration starts on or after February 9, 2013; ends February 22, 2013 . One form for each soror, child, and guest attending the conference (online registration) should be submitted. Only registered financial sorors may participate in conference activities. Neither financial or non-financial sorors may be guests of registered financial sorors at the conference.

•REGISTRATION – ONLINE ONLY Online registration for the conference should be accessed via the South Central website: akasouthcentral.org. Registration materials and forms are available for download via the website as well. Registration may be paid with Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Discover credit cards or debit cards with the MasterCard or Visa logo. Online registration will be available on December 26, 2012. Refund requests must be submitted in writing to the Conference Pecunious Grammateus and postmarked by February 22, 2013. Requests postmarked after this date will be approved on an individual basis. Refunds will be considered and processed after the conference bills have been paid. A processing fee of $35 will be assessed. There will be no refunds on meal functions after February 22, 2013. What is the Graduate Advisor Certification? • LEVEL I – training for candidates for Graduate Advisor and Graduate Advisory Committee members and sorors in leadership positions who have never been certified. • LEVEL II – training for candidates for Graduate Advisor and Graduate Advisory Committee members and sorors in chapter leadership positions who are seeking recertification.

Adhere to appropriate conference attire. Refer to “The Official Guide to Alpha Kappa Alpha Protocol” for details. 1) The announcer will introduce performer (s) name, chapter and the college or university being

represented. • Business Attire: Meetings and Luncheons 2) The team will have four minutes to perform and a total of 2 minutes for set up and breakdown. a) • Rituals Attire: Ivy Beyond the Wall - Uninterrupted White INTRO, SETUP, and BREAKDOWN – 2 minutes • Rededication: No Pants b) THE •SHOWNo OFflip-flop ROUTINE – 4 minutes or tennis shoe styled shoes 3) SCORING • Adhere to conference attire recommendations per event There will be 4 judges.
