Sensational South Central

Regional Director Expressions

Hello Sensational Sorors, You have hit the ground running in 2015 in exciting and unprecedented ways. Just think, your chapter celebrated the launch of our new international program; supported Soror Ava DuVernay with Pink Premiere Events surrounding the release of Selma; honored our Founders in commemoration of 107 years; came together for the inaugural International Sisterly Relations Day; launched your A.S.C.E.N.D. Program; served the community at our first LNDS Community Impact Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service and A.C.T.I.O.N.; “broke the internet” as record numbers of you logged on to register for the 83rd South Central Regional Conference and that is only a sample of the many things you have already accomplished in this, the first few weeks of the year. It’s ok to be proud and pat yourself on the back with this amazing start to what will surely be a stellar year! Sorors, let’s continue to support our Supreme Basileus, Soror Dorothy Buckhanan Wilson. I know I can count on each of you to answer the call and launch her vision for a unified sisterhood in this new dimension of service. As a sisterly reminder, please ensure that your EOY Reports are submitted timely and to the right person and your MIP Requests are filled out completely and accurately. Please check the Members Only Section of the regional website for updated forms including Step Show Requests, for both Undergraduate and Graduates. Continue to check your email and our social media sites for announcements. Please ensure that our Seasoned and/or technologically challenged sorors also receive information as we want every soror to feel connected and in-the-know about the goings on in Sensational South Central. We continuously try to step up and improve our efficiency thanks to the many talents of our phenomenal sorors who volunteer their time to the region. With that said, we are pleased to announce Soror Cheryl Carter Benson as the new editor of The Sensation. She is already doing a wonderful job as evident in the new look and feel of our regional newsletter. We are interested in your wonderful accomplishments, stories and events, so please submit articles to Soror Cheryl for inclusion in future editions.

As a parting thought, like me, I’m sure you are overwhelmed to see the many acts of senseless violence that seem to occur almost every day. From the recent tragedy in France and the continuous reign of terror inflicted upon the citizens of Nigeria to the injustices we face here as African-Americans that have led to the rallying cry of #blacklivesmatter, this further solidifies the importance of our mission and the impact our Founders envisioned we would make. Ethel Hedgeman Lyle said, “advantages received must be translated into service…Because I had unusual opportunities, I must pass them on in the shape of service to others.” While we may not always feel advantaged and at times lack the energy or strength to tackle a daily to-do list, let alone solve all the world’s problems, surely there’s at least one person whose faith in the goodness of people we can restore, one person whose dream of going to school we can fulfil, one family who can again feel love and kindness as new seasonal wraps warm their bodies and spirits. Ask Southern Louisiana Cluster Coordinator, Soror Robyn McCormick if one person’s efforts can make a difference and she’ll tell you about the beaming elementary school boy who proudly showed off the first new backpack he had in three years and told her about some beautiful sorority ladies who donated them to his after school program. As we look ahead to this new year focused on greater laurels to win and greater tasks to begin, let’s vow to leave behind the baggage that has weighed us down, preventing us from being our best selves, our best chapters and our best sisterhood. Moving forward, let’s focus on the big picture and what truly matters---service. When we do that, our actions will show the world who the real sorority sisters are! I know I say it all the time but I am so grateful for all you do to keep South Central Sensational and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated Supreme in Service to All Mankind. I look forward to seeing you in San Antonio. Sisterly,

5

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, South Central Region Recognizes United Nations Day

The United Nations is needed more than ever at this time of multiple crises. [...] At this critical moment, let us reaffirm our commitment to empowering the marginalized and vulnerable. On United Nations Day, I call on Governments and individuals to work in common cause for the common good. - Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon

United Nations (UN) Day marks the anniversary of the UN Charter. With the ratification of this founding document by the majority of its signatories, including the five permanent members of the Security Council, the United Nations officially came into being in 1945. October 24th has been celebrated as United Nations Day since 1948. In 1971, the United Nations General Assembly recommended that the day be observed by Member States as a public holiday. Under Target V: Global Impact, our partnership with the United Nation Association of the USA (UNA-USA) Global Classrooms Project will prepare today's youth for an increasingly global and complex society, and expand their understanding of the UN, its mission and focus. Our UNAUSA Celebrations this year officially launched this new dimension of service with members across the South Central Region.

Soror Gizette Thomas, International Regional Director and Soror Chelle Luper Wilson, South Central Regional Director admire display.

Soror Vanessa Rogers Long, International Membership Chairman Soror Emile Pendarvis Blaine, South Central Region Representative, International Membership Committee Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® is the premiere Greek-letter organization in the world founded by and for African American women. We are committed to nurturing, developing and promoting continuous lifelong membership. Therefore, we know that Alpha Kappa Alpha’s Sisterhood is Multidimensional. We strengthen our bond of sisterhood by discovering and sharing Innovative ways to retain members in our chapters. We emphasize Lifelong membership by Engaging in mentoring for undergraduates, graduates, and new members embraced in the larger circle of our sisterhood for the first time. Over the next two years, we will focus on the Membership Intake Process (MIP) and mentoring. The Undergraduate Membership Intake Process is currently under review with major revisions are on the horizon to simplify the initial paperwork submission. By now, all active members should have received an electronic survey to provide input on the current Membership Intake Process for graduate and undergraduate members. Your feedback is very important to us. Additional input will be solicited during the 2015 regional conferences with a goal of bringing forth recommended changes during the 2016 regional conferences and Boule. When the Membership Intake Process ends, mentoring begins. The sorority’s mentoring manual has been revised to reflect the new administration’s emphasis on enhancing mentoring in all chapters. The new manual entitled Mentoring: A New Dimension of Lifelong Membership is included in the fall mailing. Alicia Cain and Jackie Davis Gilmore, president and vice president respectively, presented the funds to DeLoyd Parker, Jr., Executive Director of Shape Community Center, located in the Third Ward Center, to help replenish the center’s food pantry. “We are so very thankful for all the support we have received from the ladies of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. According to Parker, hundreds of children come through their doors to be fed daily. “Xi Alpha Omega Chapter is committed to serving youth and enhancing their development. No child should be left behind when it comes to fighting hunger,” Davis-Gilmore said. The chapter participated in two additional service opportunities: UN Day Recognition and Heifer International 70th Anniversary. Sensational Service Rho Omicron Omega Right on Target With Giving Back to Baytown Community On the morning of November 22, 2014, the ladies of Rho Omicron Omega volunteered with the Church of New Beginnings Alabaster Storehouse located in Baytown, Texas. The ladies took on the task of attacking hunger by distributing food items to needy families within the community. They greeted arriving families as they entered an assembly line styled distribution process for the needy items. In addition to assisting with food distribution, the ladies made a monetary donation as part of their Christmas giving initiative. The giving doesn’t stop there! In addition to serving the Alabaster Storehouse, to date, Rho Omicron Omega has donated 32 blankets, 23 pairs of socks, and an undisclosed monetary amount to Bridge Over Troubled Waters, which services families making transitions from situations of domestic violence. In conjunction with our National President’s Target for Educational Enrichment and One Million Backpacks, Rho Omicron Omega has also donated 75 backpacks to the children of Harlem Elementary in Baytown, Texas. It is clear the ladies of Rho Omicron Omega are excited about service!

Nu Gamma Omega Chapter, Family, Friends and Partners Unite to Give Back On November 15, 2014 members of Nu Gamma Omega along with the Family Strengthening target joined together with family and community members to volunteer at the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Our 2014-2015 debutantes, Dreammakers/Mentoring , community Girl Scouts and a local Beta Club all volunteered side by side with our members in this community service project. Volunteers gathered in assembly lines, sorted, packaged, and counted canned goods and nonperishable items. Sorority members also brought their families to participate in the project and together we prepared over 600 backpacks as a part of the Food Bank's Backpack Program. This program is designed to help fill the void for low-income children who are at risk of missing meals on weekends and/or during holidays. It was an eye opening experience for the youth who participated as they came to a realization that there are children just like them in our community who don't have food on the weekends or during holidays when they are not at school.
