INSPIRATION FOR YOUR NEXT CELEBRATION
Photos by Collin Pierson Photography
It's a special time to celebrate! 2020 was a very challenging year. Going into 2021, there was still so much uncertainty on the fate of the events industry. Finally, there is some light at the end of the tunnel! So, I am thrilled to begin this issue with my 40th birthday celebration.
Photography: Collin Pierson | Entertainment: Tina Crawly - BeatMix Music
"The most beautiful things are not associated with money; they are memories and moments. If you don't celebrate those, they can pass you by" ~ Alek wek Guests got to experience entertainment by Beatmix Music and Dj Dee Money, a curated menu by Entertaining Company, Stunning stationery by By Dami Studios, rentals by Ellie N Rose and more.
This 40th birthday celebration to me was not just another birthday celebration but a new beginning. A celebration of life, love and survival.
ENGAGE THE FIVE SENSES Always plan with your guest experience in mind. To curate an unforgettable event experience, you must be focused on ambiance and every little detail. Great ambiance should appeal to all five senses (Sight, Sound ,Smell, Touch, Taste). No detail is too small!
Sight:Your guest experience begins with the first thing they see. You want to make it memorable. I love to create a GRAND ENTRANCE at every event. Sound: Melody is essential tot he success of an event. Guests should be taken on a journey through the entertainment options. Every part of the event should have a curate vibe. Pay attention to the ambiance your are trying to create when selecting your entertainment options. Taste: You want your celebration food and drinks to be well curated, delicious, and memorable. You want your food and drink menu to be a crowd-pleaser. Touch: This is one of my favorite areas to curate. I love texture and the feel of a really good quality fabric for the napkins and table cloths. The stationery is another favorite. Guests will touch and feel the invitations, menus and even place cards. Smell: Smell is one of the most ignored senses when curating the perfect event. What guests perceive is vital to the guest experience. You want enticing smells that keeps guests wanting more. While the food, cocktails, and flowers smell great, Don't forget about the bathroom. A room spray and scented candles will definitely elevate your guest experience.
SET THE RIGHT TONE No matter the size of your party, the tone needs to be just right. From the smell of flowers to the music as guests enter to the decor. The aim is to create unforgettable experiences at every turn. .

A couple of weeks ago while cleaning out one of my many catch all drawers I stumbled upon a “going away book” I created when I moved from Nigeria to the United States in 2000. It had a page dedicated to each of my friends. They wrote their name, age, likes and dislikes, favorite song, etc and a going away message for me. Sort of like a facebook profile before facebook :) I was so drawn to my handwriting from 21 years ago. I was immediately transformed to that moment in time. The texture of the paper with its worn edges had become a keepsake. I could identify my friends just by the different quirks in their handwriting. What a treasure. I guess without knowing it, I was always working my way to becoming a stationer. A lover of using paper intentionally.
The card you receive that lets you know that you are loved. It holds so many of your emotions as you journal daily, it brings words to life as you cozy up and read your favorite book. It holds your dreams as you write your vision and goals for the year, week, or day. It presents the anticipation of a good time when you receive that invitation in the mail. It helps honor a life well lived or announce a new life yet to be lived. See, I told you paper is powerful! In an age where “fast” is glorified, I urge you to slow down just a little bit. When you are hosting your next celebration (big or small) consider sending an invitation. Consider folding up paper and personalizing them as place cards. Consider sending a thank you note in the mail. Pick up a card for the next birthday you attend. Get lost in an actual book, feel your fingers turning each page and enjoy the smell of that paper.
Paper is powerful. It is that tangible note you hold onto that has the fading handwriting of your dearly departed loved one. OLUWA DAMI

7 DELICIOUS COCKTAILS FOR YOUR BIG DAY
GENE AND GEORGETTI
BY MICHELLE DURPETTI AND COLLIN PIERSON PHOTOGRAPHY BY SODA FOUNTAIN PHOTO _ GENEANDGEORGETTI.COM 500 N FRANKLIN ST, CHICAGO, IL 60654 Gene & Georgetti was founded in 1941 by Gene Michelotti and his partner Alfredo Federighi, who was nicknamed “Georgetti” after a famous Italian cyclist. Located in the heart of River North, Gene & Georgetti is Chicago’s oldest and one of its finest steakhouses. Partners Gene and “Georgetti” worked hand in hand to establish the reputation of excellence that is continued through today Born in the small Tuscan town of Lucca, Italy, Gene Michelotti came to the United States at the age of 15, several years later; he married Ida Passaglia in April of 1938. Though he spoke little to no English upon his arrival, he worked numerous jobs ranging from night watchman, porter, dishwasher, and bartender, where he encountered his future business partner Alfredo “Georgetti” Federighi, who was working as a chef. Together in 1941, they founded Gene and Georgetti. Alfredo had the kitchen, and Gene was the front man, holding down the bar. His genuine and vivacious personality made him a hit with regulars, politicians and celebrities alike. Upon Alfredo’s death in 1969, Gene became the sole proprietor of Gene & Georgetti, until his death in 1989. Gene’s daughter Marion married Tony Durpetti in 1969. They have one daughter, Michelle. Upon the death of Gene in 1989, although a CEO of his own national radio advertising firm, Tony and Marion did not want to see the restaurant leave the family, and decided to purchase it from Marion’s mother, Ida Michelotti. Together with a staff that embodies the word family; they work to maintain the tradition that defines this classic institution and proudly bring it into the future. Michelle is currently the third generation and managing partner with her husband, Collin Pierson.
THE PERFECT PEAR The perfect pear is created with pear infused vodka, ginger infusion from simplicite (a local Chicago company that creates all of our artisanal cocktail syrups!), our homemade limoncello, ginger liquor and a splash of OJ. This is the perfect cocktail to enjoy at brunch. Light with a little sweetness but balanced perfectly with the fresh taste of ginger it really is one that I love to order without a meal and just enjoy. The classic crystal rocks glass is such a fancy way to enjoy this too!
Recipe 2oz Pear Vodka 1 oz Limoncello 1/2 oz Ginger Liqueur 1/2 oz Gingerzest Syrup 1 oz Orange Juice
To Make Shake all together then pour in fancy rocks glass. Garnish w/ sliced pear fan. THE ART OF CELEBRATING | 52

SEASONAL COLLINS Our Seasonal Collins is one that we love for two reasons, it is perfect with either vodka or gin - and also great as a mocktail too! This refreshing libation includes fresh lemon juice, a hibiscus rose infusion, fresh mint and a handful of fresh blueberries to finish! This cocktail is also a really fun one to make in a large batch and serve in a punch bowl at t party. Classic punch bowls bring such an old school charm to a house warming or even a summer bbq for those looking for something a little different and really fresh. And it is easy on the host as well because none of the ingredients are too complicated!
Recipe Choice of 2oz vodka or gin 1oz fresh lemon juice 1oz hibiscus rose syrup
Instructions Shake ingredients together then topped with club soda and garnished with lemon slice, maybe a few berries and mint garnish
Prosecco!
With a simple classic like prosecco, the right glassware can take this from the usual "always delightful" to next level
stylish too. Mix and match coupe glasses and elevate this classic Italian aperitivo at your next dinner party. And remember this is the most fantastic base for any mimosa or bellini that you could imagine creating. My personal favorite is to pair it with fresh peach nectar for a bellini that originated at Harry's Bar in Italy!
HOME MADE LIMONCELLO AND ORANGE CELLO Homemade limoncello is one of the most fantastic things to keep in your freezer during the summer. The only thing to top it could be its sister version made from oranges. Typically these lemon and orange liquors are "digestivi," or served after dinner to help digest and the perfect way to end a fabulous Italian meal. Limoncello is smooth and sweet with an intense lemon flavor. It can be sipped on its own, mixed into sparkling water, or shaken into cocktails.
INGREDIENTS 10 Lemons 750mL bottle of grain alcohol Granulated sugar Water Use 100-190 proof grain alcohol (pick your poison wisely!) Organic lemons are best, because there are no pesticides - Meyer lemons create a great flavor Use a potato peeler to zest the lemons in to long strips
INSTRUCTIONS Peel lemons, add to a sealable non-porous container, and fill with the grain alcohol. Make sure all the lemon peels are covered. Let it steep, covered, out of sunlight, for 24 weeks (the longer, the smoother the flavor). Use a coffee filter or cheesecloth to strain the liquid, and funnel in to a container. Mix 1 to 1 ratio of sugar and water in a saucepan, simmering until all the sugar is dissolved. Add as much or as little simple syrup to the grain alcohol and lemon fusion - it really depends on how strong you want it to be. Stir well, and funnel in to your glass containers of choice.
CLASSIC NEGRONI You can never go wrong with a classic negroni. The Negroni is a popular Italian cocktail, made of one part gin, one part vermouth rosso, and one part Campari, garnished with orange peel. It is considered an apéritif. A traditionally made Negroni is stirred, not shaken, and built over ice in an old-fashioned or rocks glass and garnished with a slice of orange. Best when sipped and the perfect three part blend of bitter, sweet and dry it is an excellent summer cocktail.
RECIPE All equal parts 1.5oz of Choice of Gin Sweet Vermouth and Campari.
INSTRUCTIONS Build over Ice & stir, garnish w/ orange Twist

APEROL SPRITZ Walk through an Italian town during the late-afternoon—particularly in Northern cities like Milan and Venice— and you’ll find groups of people enjoying Aperol Spritzes. The afterwork spritz is a long-established Italian tradition, and fortunately, it’s one that’s easily replicated anywhere. Aperol traces its roots back to Padua, Italy. The aperitivo—an appetitewhetting beverage designed to be consumed before dinner—was created in 1919. Its bittersweet flavor, aromatic botanicals and easygoing alcohol content (it’s only 11% ABV) made it the perfect choice for pre-dinner sipping. Pair Aperol with bubbly wine and sparkling water, and you’ll be hardpressed to find a more refreshing and thirst-quenching cocktail. And because it’s low in alcohol, you can start drinking early and still make it to dinner.
RECIPE Build in Wine glass over ice: 2oz Aperol Liqueur, topped with Prosecco or champagne, splash of club soda. Garnished with orange slice
5 fun mimosa recipes for your post-wedding brunch By Merlyn Jose The Grand Aberie
The wedding brunch has become a staple of the weekend wedding celebration, another celebration to ensure everyone leaves your wedding weekend satisfied. THE ART OF CELEBRATING | 74
ADDING YOUR PERSONALITY INTO YOUR BRIDAL LOOK By Alina Chakroborty One of the brightest and most significant moments of one’s life is their big wedding day. It’s the day when two people form a bond made to last through both prosperity and melancholy, through pandemics and the potentials beyond. On such an outstanding day, it’s crucial to look and feel your best, and a part of that includes layering your personality into your outfit, down to the last detail. Think of the walk down the aisle as your personal catwalk - what would be the look of your dreams? In the era of internet shopping, finding the perfect outfit became both much easier and more difficult, with a variety of choices available for any taste and any budget. The bridal beauty of your choice can be shipped from any part of the world, so don’t be intimidated - take your time to explore options, looking in both bridal and non-bridal stores. When looking, prioritize the dress cut and contour that flatters your image the most, while making sure that the color of the dress will compliment your skin tone and look cohesive with the mood and color scheme of the venue. Shoes are as important in the outfit as the dress. They can either uplift the look, make it more casual, and even add controversy. Make sure to purchase the shoes after you decide on the wedding dress and to “break them in” before the big day.
Purse and accessories should be the next one on the list. Though you won’t take the purse down the aisle, it will loyally hold your belongings through the day, and will help you look stunning before and after the big event. Go for the best fit here, not too big nor too small, and make sure that it can comfortably fit your phone and your must-haves. Makeup and hair adds the final touch. From subtle to avant-garde, do your best to project your own inner vision. It’s advisable to find a makeup artist who can flawlessly bring your vision to life while making you feel the most extra bride in the whole world.
For my wedding I went with an embroidered dress by Zuhair Murad paired with Rene Caovilla pumps and MIU MIU purse. The look was finished up with white gold vintage jewelry that uniderlined the dreamy feeling of the whole wedding. I chose to wear light makeup with lavender eyeshadow to compliment the dress.

FREDERIC MALLE Promise $390 In the Middle East, a promise made between two people is accompanied by the strictest honour code. Frédéric Malle celebrates this principle with a promise of his own, whose beating heart is made of two precious varieties of rose: rose essence from Bulgaria and rose absolute from Turkey are lifted by apple, pink pepper and clove, and bound to a sensuous base of patchouli, cypriol and labdanum; an accord as unbreakable, and invisible, as a vow.
CREED Royal Oud $525 Wood, leather, marble, and gold. These luxurious elements of a Persian palace are the inspiration behind the architecture of Royal Oud. Precious, sweet oud is carefully extracted from agarwood trees
FOR HIM "Make a bold Statement"
TOM FORD Noir Extreme for Men $134 Noir Extreme reveals the decadent aspect of the Noir man. The perfume's rich blend of spicy heat and glowing citrus gives way to Indian kulfi, wrapped in rose absolute, jasmine accord and orange flower.
MAISON FRANCIS KURKDJIAN OUD satin mood Extrait $375 This Extrait de parfum variation accentuates the fabric's Oriental reflections. An abundance of roses from Turkey and Tunisia round out the oud wood's dark, animalistic tones with their sensuality, before enveloping the violet blossoms in softness.

If there is anything I’ve learned about balancing a busy lifestyle and trying to maintain my health and fitness goals; it is that organization is the key to it all. Life gets busy and the days seem to fill up with to-do’s faster than ever. Creating a system has helped me to balance working out consistently, working full time, and running my blog. These 4 ways are how I’ve organized my life to achieve my health and fitness goals.

Reminders, Reminders, & More Reminders We are always on our phones, so why not use them for what they are. Virtual assistants that are always available to us. My brain is always going 100 miles a minute, so forgetting things is very easy for me these days. I add reminders to my phone for the days I am planning to workout, as well as reminders to do health and fitness related tasks. I try to drink hot water with ginger and lemon each morning, so I have a reminder in my phone for that.
Reminders, Reminders, & More Reminders Set reminders for any of the fitness related tasks you have on your list. Those tasks can include: 1. Meal prepping for the week ahead 2. Your evening routine (more to come on that) 3. Healthy snack reminders 4. Reminders to plan your workout
Develop An Evening Routine I know that when most people think of routines they think of them being boring, but routines are a necessary part of adulting. An evening routine is the difference between I’m running late and I have time to do the things I need to do. I try to workout in the mornings before work because I can always find 30 excuses to not go after the workday.
With the current quarantine situation, I have switched to at home workouts, but my evening routine still applies. I plan my workouts the night before and take out my workout clothes so that I am able to allow enough time to workout and get myself ready to be logged in to work on time. I’ve found that now more than ever having a good routine has been helpful for me. I am currently working out everyday, but if you plan to workout specific days set your reminder for the night before to plan your workout and get your workout clothes ready.
My routine when things are normal Whether you are a morning or evening gym goer this routine will still help you. Pick a time that works for you and add a reminder to your phone to do your evening routine. If I know that I am going to the gym on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, I will set a reminder for 8 pm the night before each of those days (Sunday, Tuesday, Wednesday, & Thursday) to do might evening routine. The evening routine consists of packing my gym bag and making sure I have everything I need. Charged headphones, lifting gloves, and arm band for my phone/music. I also put out my workout clothes the night before and leave my workout shoes by the front door with my gym bag. Creating and sticking to this routine has been super helpful because instead of scrambling in the morning and wasting time, I am able to quickly get up, drink some water and get myself ready to go to the gym. This routine still applies if you are someone who works out in the evenings. Pack your bag the night before and leave it by the door

Meal Prep Meal prep is just a fancy word us bloggers created that essentially means eating leftovers. Pick a day each week that realistically works for you and plan out your meals for the week. For me this looks like this. Plan out food for the following week on Friday’s, grocery shop on Saturday, and cook meals for the following week on Sunday. I’m not going to lie, I get super bored of eating the same thing everyday ( you will not see my counter filled with 5 of the same meals), but if this works for you, you can take that approach. For me meal prepping means making a batch of egg muffins, putting oatmeal and toppings (nuts, fruit) into separate zip lock bags. For lunch/dinner I usually cook 2 – 3 meals for the week (depending on what I have planned to make. If salad is one of the meals I usually wait until the night before to cut up the veggies ( I like my veggies crunchy and fresh).
Keep A Planner You’re probably thinking why do I need a planner if I have so many reminders in my phone? Stick with me because this will make sense. The planner comes in handy for planning your workouts. We are getting our lives together so this is part of it. Map out the days you plan to workout each week and take it a step further and plan your workouts. There is nothing worse than going to the gym without a plan so utilize your planner to map those out. A planner is also a great way to disconnect. Don’t get me wrong, I love my phone and I have loads of reminders in it, but sometimes I need time away from it. In my planner I not only write down my workouts for each week, but I also include self care time, doc appointments, hair, nail, eyelash appointments, and I also use it to meal plan/prep each week. Writing things down makes me feel accountable. It also helps me memorize things (think back to taking notes in school). Keeping my health and self care planner has been a game changer for me. It keeps me on top of my appointments and it allows me to make and keep my health and fitness a priority.

Bringing It All Together
These simple steps are the difference between “I don’t have time for fitness” and “ I can make time to prioritize my health/fitness goals”.
Take the time to organize your life and carve out time to put you first. Remember we only get 1 body and we are the only ones who can take care of them. Be kind to yourself and also allow yourself grace if you do not get this right on the first try. JUST DON’T GIVE UP ON YOU!
Make Time For Self-Care Make your physical, mental, and emotional health a priority.

Your At Home Self-Care Kit by Akeshi Akinseye
While planning a celebration is exciting and fun, it can also be overwhelming. We need to pay close attention to our mental health and keep stress down. It's easy to get caught up in the everyday hustle and forget that we need to pause and take time to be good to ourselves.
"Self care is not selfish"
It is extremely important to keep focus on your basic self-care needs while planning for your big-day. The first step creating a more balance life is to make self-care a priority. Carving out time each week to reset and relax is essential to your well-being. Here are some of my go-to products to have in your at-home self care kit.
