WHAT IS MONARCHY ◦ Monarchy is a country where the head of the state is a king or a queen ◦ Today in Europe we still have monarchies, there are 11 of them: ◦ Andorra, Belgium, Denmark, Lichtenstein, Luxemburg, Monaco, , The Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden, The UK


FIRST KING IN THE UK

◦ The UK has been a monarchy for over a thousand years.

◦ It is impossible to say who was the first king, some people say it was ALFRED THE GREAT in 9th century

◦ Others say that the first king of united England was WILLIAM I called The Conqueror.

DYNASTIES Dynasty is a royal family ruling a country for a long time Over the centuries there were many dynasties in Britain, the most famous were: ◦ The Normans in 11th century ◦ The Plantagenets in 12th – 14th century ◦ The Tudors in 15th and 16th century with King Henry VIII and Queen Elizabeth I ◦ The Stuarts in 16th century ◦ The Havoverians in 17th and 18th century with Queen Victoria ◦ The House of Windsor in 20th century with Queen Elizabeth II

THE HOUSE OF WINDSOR ◦ The name was changed from Saxe-Coburg Gotha ( German origin) in 1917 because of the I World War against Germany. ◦ They adopted the name after the castle from 12th century ◦ George V was the first king of Windsor family ◦ Elizabeth II is his granddaughter. ◦ This is the emblem of the Windsor family


THE QUEEN OF MANY STATES â—Ś The Queen is the head of the UK and also of Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Jamaica, Barbados or the Bahamas and many other small dominios. â—Ś In fact The Queen has no real power and is just a representation of the nation. Other countries have independent governments.


WHAT CAN THE QUEEN or KING DO? ◦ The Queen officially appoints the Prime Minister but she must listen to the result of the democratic elections in Great Britain. ◦ She is the head of the Army and the head of the Church of England ◦ Her picture can be on every stamp but she sends letters without stamps ◦ The Queen cannot vote and she cannot talk about her political preferencies in public ◦ She can drive a car as fast as she wants! ◦ She opens the Parliment but she cannot have her own speech. ◦ She cannot be a witness in court ◦ When the Queen in in the Buckingham Palace the Royal Standard in up
